Would Trump Survive a Tape Saying He Said the N-Word?

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:53 am

Why not? His survival abilities go beyond “cockroach level” to “Keith Richards level.” Trump will be the guy standing around smirking after Armageddon while Keith Richards lies dying of radiation poisoning.

Anyway. The fact that Omarosa said it means nothing. The fact that Katrina Pierson seems to acknowledge, on tape, that Trump admitted he said it? That’s…not nothing.

“I’m trying to find out at least what context it was used in, to help us maybe try to figure out a way to spin it,” a woman, identified as Pierson by Manigault Newman, said on the tape.

“I said, ‘Well, sir, can you think of any time this might have happened?’ and he said ‘No,'” Patton said, according to the tape, to which Manigault Newman replied, “Well, that’s not true.”

“He goes, ‘How do you think I should handle it?’ and I told him exactly what you just said, Omarosa,” Patton continued, “which is ‘Well, it depends on what scenario you’re talking about.’ And he said, ‘Well, why don’t you just go ahead and put it to bed.'”

“He said it,” Pierson interjected. “No, he said it. He’s embar[r]assed.”

Who, exactly, is it going to offend? His most strident base? Pardon me while I emit a mordant chuckle. Ha. OK, I’m done.

I begged him to go with the radio edit. Begged him.

By the way, I finished Jonah Goldberg’s Suicide of the West. In the interim I also read Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness by William Styron (a short book), Free Will, by Sam Harris (a very short book and, unfortunately, not particularly recommended), and have begun How to Change Your Mind, by Michael Pollan. (Weird topic for the last one, but listen to Pollan’s EconTalk interview with Russ Roberts.) In my last roundup of books I have recently read or am reading, I forgot to add Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Accident, and the Illusion of Safety, by Eric Schlosser, a monumental history of America’s nuclear program and its vulnerability to accident and human error.

Given how absurd our politics is, reading books makes more and more sense these days. I’ll probably start rolling out some reviews in the next few days, because I’m pretty much disgusted with everything else.

A pretty fair argument can be made that when we lost this ethos, we lost America.

DJT is many lousy things. A racist he is not. So, in these twisted times, of course this is the one charge that could finally stick to his teflon exterior.

Ed — if you have the time, get to the end of this lonnnnnng blog entry, which was the only way to bring an old, famous Bloom County strip. Trump as racist as a meme has been pushed and mocked since the 80s, so there’s history here.

But you have to be careful. Some of the “fallacies” may not be fallacies.

    For instance Linda

“Linda,” including her commitment to social justice, college major in philosophy, participation in antinuclear demonstrations, and so on. Then the subjects were asked which was more likely: (a) that Linda was a bank teller, or (b) that she was a bank teller and active in the feminist movement. The correct answer is (a), because it is always more likely that one condition will be satisfied in a situation than that the condition plus a second one will be satisfied.

    Wrong.

Linda really does have a higher probability of being both a bank teller and an active feminist than being a bank teller alone. (if the question is, if you hear that said of her, is it more likely to be true in one case than the other? That is, which of those two reports is more likely to be true? Not that you hear both. We suppose in one scenario you hear A and in the other scenario you hear B.

If you hear B would you be more likely to rate the probability of it being true higher than if you had heard A? B is the answer.

The absolute probability of being a bank teller (as opposed to all other jobs) is pretty small.

  8. So Trump saying there are no tapes when people have been talking about being there when it actually happened, for years. So unless the reality TV show didn’t tape that one thing, there are probably tapes, will they release the tapes is another question.

There were no Hollywood Reporter tapes, until there were.

There were no meetings with the Russians, until there were.

With DJT, his denials of fact have exactly the same relevance as his statement of facts, it’s safe to assume he’s lying, because he’s always lying. Big things, small things, doesn’t matter.

  11. Would Trump Survive a Tape Saying He Said the N-Word?

Well, let’s see – he’s survived tapes where he openly bragged about sexual assaulting women and peeping at naked little girls, a tape where he openly called on the Russian spy agencies to intervene in the election on his behalf, and a tape of him performing sex acts on Vladimir Putin in front of the world press in Helsinki.

Remember, this is a guy who holds “his most strident base” in such contempt that he boasts (accurately) that they’d excuse him for committing cold-blooded murder.

The damage from an N-word tape would not, in the first instance, harm Trump himself but rather the thousands of Republican candidates for office across the country.

That’s the basis of the racism charge and the Bloom County riffs. Back in the ’70s, Trump was accused of racial discrimination in renting to black people, because he would not rent to poor people. Roy Cohn beat the rap for him.

  22. Patterico is correct, I don’t really care if Trump voiced an explicit racial epithet at sometime during or after the campaign. I’d rather he hadn’t for a range of good reasons, but if he did or didn’t on a single occasion, so what?

It’s a common term that millions of Blacks use everyday with impunity when referring to one another, but which is strongly taboo for all other races.

Whites especially can’t go around thinking they can use the same term no matter how comfortable they feel in the company of Black friends. They can’t, and if they do the negative consequences will penetrate even the thickest skulls rather quickly.

Of course Trump knows better than to give his many detractors opportunities to reinforce their smear narratives. Yet, if he did make an especially egregious unforced error, he should face up to it and apologize – if he didn’t he should call his accusers out and shame them in public.

That top officials were leaking to CNN.

Back in the ’70s, Trump was accused of racial discrimination in renting to black people, because he would not rent to poor people. Roy Cohn beat the rap for him.

    This was about 1973.

First of all it really was his father – it was his father who owned the place and set policy. They claimed they were just trying to keep out welfare people, but this was not the case. In the end, they were treated like they just weren’t familiar yet with the 1968 Open Housing law, and tehy agreed to get training.

And Donald Trump himself decided not to get involved in renting to anybody except very rich people.

Trump’s father didn’t just discriminate against people. He also discriminated in favor, maybe in favor was more important than against.

Fred Trump (October 11, 1905 – June 25, 1999) liked Jewish tenants and supported a synagogue in his complex, maybe becase he thought things would work better and they would pay more rent and stay longer if many neighbors were similair to each other and maybe friends – it would be a community – and maybe because he was of German origin and wanted to do something different. Trump Village in Brighton beach or Coney Islans is, I think, still mostly Jewish. Of an old fashioned kind. Some Russians.

His family had no love for Germany and didn’t want to be aqssociated woith it – Donald Trump’s grandfather was expelled and ordered to leave the country in 1905. Because he had left the country without seving in the army. In 1917 his family was reported to have changed its name to Trump, but Wikipedia seems to think that is untrue..

  40. Somebody very left wing, a new columnist (well she goes back to sometime in 2107) for the New York Times, whom I found in the past said wrong things,is being cautious. Perhaps she is wary of Trump Derangement Syndrome: believing anything bad anybody says about Donald Trump.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/13/opinion/columnists/omarosa-unhinged-book-trump-cult.html

Of course, just because Manigault Newman is telling the truth about some things doesn’t prove that she’s telling the truth about everything, including the alleged existence of outtakes from “The Apprentice” in which Trump uses racial slurs. “Unhinged” has lots of evidence-free gossip, including speculation that Trump was sleeping with Paula White, the pretty blond prosperity-gospel preacher who gave the invocation at his inauguration. My opinion of Trump could scarcely be lower, but I won’t be convinced that he floated the idea of being sworn in on “The Art of the Deal” instead of the Bible, as Manigault Newman claims, until I hear it myself. (Lordy, I hope there are tapes.)

I also read that Omarosa says in the book that Trump is acquiring dementia because of his excessive drinking of diet Coke. She says she put a printout of a news report about a study about the dangers of diet coke on his desk, but that Rob Porter berated her for putting things there on her own.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/new-audio-omarosa-trump-campaign-aides-apparently-discussing-fallout-of-n-word/

It’s from October, 2016. The people on the recorded phone conversation (besides Omarosa apparently) are Lynne Patton, then-assistant to Eric Trump, campaign communications director Jason Miller, and national spokesperson for the Donald Trump 2016 presidential campaign Katrina Pierson. Somewhat lower ranking people.

Lynne Pierson says she asked Trump about that and he said he couldn’t think of any time he said that. Omarosa says that’s not true (that is, she’s telling them he did say that)

But she never claims, now or then, that she heard it herself, nor names anyone who did who says that’s true that he heard it.

Pierson said on Monday on Fox news that that call – the one with Omarosa played on Tuesday morning on CBS – never happened.

Trump’s a master manipulator and a genius at paying attention to details and – like a magician – he knows he can get people to pay full attention to the shiny object in one hand while paying no attention whatsoever to what his other hand is doing. The whole Omorosa thing is just a shiny object Trump had the fantastic foresight to keep in reserve against the day he might need a shiny object and who knows what other and how many shiny objects he has stored up just waiting for when there’s a use for them? So did the Clinton Administration.

Omarosa fired 4 times from Clinton Administration

So here is some lighthearted news:

LOS ANGELES — Her stint on “The Apprentice” (search) wasn’t the first time Omarosa Manigault Stallworth (search) heard the words “You’re fired.” People magazine says she was bounced from four jobs in two years with the Clinton administration.

A worker at her last job with the Commerce Department says Omarosa was asked to leave as quickly as possible because she was so disruptive. She says, “One woman wanted to slug her.”

  93. Meanwhile patron is banning Robert Spencer, we now return to out approved barrels of monkeus.

    Narciso (d1f714)

  94. let me see if i have this correct….

A tape with Trump using the “N” word supposedly exists.

Such a tape would be the Holy Grail for the Trump Hating media. It would be more sought after than pictures of Trump and Putin in a Moscow Steam Bath with underage Miss Teen Universe contestants.

But the tape has never surfaced.

Omarosa writes in her book about having heard about the existence of such a tape, but says in her book that she never actually heard it.

Then in a pre-publication interview to drum up interest in her book she mistakenly says she has heard the tape, and questions the reporter by saying “Haven’t you read my book?”

When it’s pointed out that in the book she says she has never actually heard the tape, 24 hour spin/damage control is necessary because she just betrayed her own lie — which would otherwise have been unverifiable.

So Chuck Todd invites her on Meet The Fooking Press to offer up the explanation that at the time she wrote the book, and after it went to press, she was able to listen to the tape herself for the first time.

Viola — both the book, and her comment in the pre-publication publicity tour are BOTH correct.

And I’m supposed to believe this?

Answer this for me — before its known that in the book she claims she heard about the tape, but had never actually heard it, why would some unknown — or at least unidentified — person reach out to her to let her listen to a tape that is the Holy Grail of all things Anti-Trump???

It’s not until after her interview last week that the issue even arose — but in the interview she said she has actually heard the tape. So the holder of the tape had to have sought her out in order to let her listen to the tape before anyone knew what she claimed in the book.

This is first-order idiocy if you take about 10 seconds to think it through.

I thought it would be difficult for the Anti-Trump forces in the media and the NeverTrump movement to top their embrace of Michael Wolf’s entry into the “nonfiction novel” form — a “historical” work chock full of made-up anecdotes and conversations.

But Omarosa shows that I have underestimated their capacity for idiocy.

Trump is the Katamari President, EVERYTHING sticks to him and he just keeps rolling.

In any case, I’m still in a good mood, so I leave with these thoughts:

“Peter Strzok didn’t get “fired” he was simply deplatformed by US Government. There are still plenty of other places for him to do his kind of work.”

  109. swc (at #98):

I believe Omarosa’s tapes. Anything else is “verify, and then I might trust.” The things she says happened, though, are reasonable things for a reporter to follow up. After all, this woman kept appearing in Trump’s orbit for years — she might really know things. Of course, the woman is also an astonishingly disruptive hot mess whose reality tv persona might even be her real persona.

Ultimately, O is likely another small bump on Trump’s rocky road of a Presidency. It probably won’t be the pothole that breaks the axle, in much the same way Stormy Daniels hasn’t derailed him. But there is no real predicting what bit of nastiness or what brazen set of lies does Trump in, or whether, despite all appearances, Trump is going to get through it all.

If Trump were impeached on charges of “conduct unbecoming” I would have no problem voting AYE. If they impeach him on BS charges like “obstruction” for trying to quash a witch hunt, they can GFT, but his boorishness reflects poorly on the office and the country.

    Kevin M (5d3e49)

  143. I’m kinda uncomfortable with impeaching for ‘conduct unbecoming’ because, while his conduct *is* unbecoming and it *does* reflect poorly on the office and the country, we all *knew* that when the 2016 election happened. So impeaching him on those grounds is using the impeachment process to overturn the election results because we don’t like his *style*, rather than because he’s violated the law or done anything unethical.

So, you have proof he takes bribes? Like, say, his piggy-bank Foundation accepting $20 million from a foreign power after doing them a favor?

Lots of Presidents, beginning with Washington, have had foreign business interests. The clause has never been used in that regard. It is intended to stop bribes, not normal business. And for it to be a bribe, given that Trump is a billionaire, it has to be substantial.
