New York Times Hires Racist to Join Its Editorial Board

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:35 am

The New York Times editorial board has named its newest member: Sarah Jeong.

Sarah Jeong
She’s a true delight, and she’ll fit right in, as you can see from these tweets of hers:

If she deletes them, that’s OK. I saved screenshots here.

Thanks to Allahpundit on Twitter (as always).

P.S. Kevin Williamson and Roseanne Barr, don’t get too excited. A different standard applies here.

  1. Damn. Yep, she’s a racist.

    Paul Montagu (84878a)

  2. As someone from a “not-” model minority group, she comes across as wasting her honorary whiteness.

    urbanleftbehind (5eecdb)

  3. I guess she’s one of the unsociable ones according the Harvard admissions committee,

I don’t even know what her first rant was about, the second is about some rapper who would surely cap her with a second thought.

    Narciso (eb271e)

  4. Locker-room talk.

    Dave (445e97)

  5. I saw the headline elsewhere and I thought it was an exaggeration. Nope. She’s the real deal. Full of racial hate.

A perfect choice for the NYT.

    Patricia (3363ec)

  6. Look on the bright side, the Democratic party and it’s supporters is just finding their natural roots again.

    Dejectedhead (f376b4)

  7. And she’s the tech madame dafarge that Milo ran into when he was covering video games,

Grantee that was a,stupid application of the law, but blanket statements like that are not helpful.

    Narciso (eb271e)

  8. Oh she was the editor of Harvard’s race and gender journal, that’s clever,

    Narciso (eb271e)

  9. She hates white people, and that’s why she lives in… Portland????

    Skeeter (a6e701)

  10. Replace ‘white’ with ‘black’, ‘muslim’, or even ‘illegal’ and watch the hootenanny!

If the Times hired her knowing about these hateful, ignorant, juvenile tweets directed at a group based purely on skin color, that just further confirms the absolute void of self -awareness their editorial board already reflects.

If they didn’t know, it looks like the firings that wiped out the copy staff extended to the recruiters.

    harkin (b524bb)

  11. Is this the same Sarah Jeong? I don’t know… Maybe there are two different people with the same name?

    Tillman (d34303)

  12. She’s an imbecile no matter what her ethnicity, yes we need more soul destroying hip hop, what message does that send?

    Narciso (eb271e)

  13. Read another one of her gems where she celebrates low white birth rates and actually claims white extinction is in her plans.

    https://mobile.twitter.com/GarbageHuman_/status/1024894655253495808/photo/2

They should make her honorary inclusion/tolerance editor.

    harkin (b524bb)

  14. “Is this the same Sarah Jeong? I don’t know… Maybe there are two different people with the same name?”

That would explain how even the Times isn’t that stupid but the offending tweets feature a photo that seems to match the one in the hiring announcement.

If this is all a set-up by a hacker troll he/she did a thorough job.

    harkin (b524bb)

  15. Snicker. Mattress Girl II is my guess. Some WASP legacy trust fund baby at Harvard nibbled at her bait but she didn’t manage to set the hook, now she hates all white people.

    nk (dbc370)

  16. It’s the same woman.

    Dave (445e97)

  17. The NYT, clearly, is no enemy of the people.

    Ed from SFV (6d42fa)

  18. No she seemed already fluked from the getgo.

    Narciso (eb271e)

  19. Harkin, on that note, is Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez just a double agent Lefty LARPer who drew a shorter straw between her, this Sarah chick and Candace Owens and got stuck campaigning and sharing the one full size in the dacha with Bernie?

    urbanleftbehind (5eecdb)

  20. Who conquered Korea again, multiple times, seriously what’s her damage.

    Narciso (eb271e)

  21. What’s up with NY Times. This lady’s tweets are truly offensive. If you took out the “WHITE” and replaced it with the word “BLACK” how long would she last anywhere? I figure you won’t even allow this post.

    Thomas Griffin (d78c3f)

  22. I’m afraid you’re correct about it being the same woman Dave.

The NYT must be using the same vetting process as our rigged, so-called President uses.
    https://www.businessinsider.com/ryan-bounds-nomination-withdrawn-trump-racist-writings-2018-7

Ryan Wesley Bounds, an assistant US Attorney of Oregon, had been revealed to have withheld writings that were racially insensitive while an undergraduate at Stanford University. The writings, which contained racist remarks and slurs against other groups, imperiled President Donald Trump’s nominee for the Ninth Circuit.

I predict that Sarah will also quietly be shown the door by the NYT.

    Tillman (d34303)

  23. I don’t think So, the latter rant is about intent in social media, an argument that justice Thomas dispatched rather powerfully in his dissent.

Forget about race, her brain is full of oatmeal.

    Narciso (eb271e)

  24. Remarkable that the Times tech desk made exactly the same mistake just a few months ago:

After Storm Over Tweets, The Times and a New Hire Part Ways

    Dave (445e97)

  25. The next time anyone cites the authority of the NY Times remember that they read her tweets and hired her. That means they approve.

    NJRob (1e276c)

  26. Actually bounds is a fairly rigorous thinker, as compared to this jackalope.

    Narciso (eb271e)

  27. The Washington Times has picked up the story.

Always trust content from Juche Dave. She’s toast.

    Dave (445e97)

  28. I never even heard of this Norton person,

Actually bounds was quite prophetic in his description of the sjw whirlwind even in the segments alliance for justice excerpted.

    Narciso (eb271e)

  29. This Possom Congress is utterly useless, and picking down before the beast makes me sad.

    Narciso (eb271e)

  30. So you think it’s because she didn’t have a date for her senior prom, narciso?

    nk (dbc370)

  31. Kevin Williamson has a principled (gasp!) reaction:

I’ve heard some people on the right say, “If Kevin Williamson has to get fired by the Atlantic, then Sarah Jeong has to get fired by the New York Times.” The Times can hire and fire whomever it likes — but not in my name. I’m sure that many of the people invoking my experience are well-meaning friends, but I’ll thank them to leave me out of this.

    Read the whole thing.

    Dave (445e97)

  35. this is all part of slutbama’s gloriously perverted legacy

President Obama, especially in his second term, soon renounced much of what he had run on. He raised taxes, stagnated what would have been a natural recovery, weighed in on hot-button racialized criminal cases, advanced a radical social agenda, and polarized the country along lines of difference.

Again, Obama most unfortunately redefined race as a white-versus-nonwhite binary, in an attempt to build a new coalition of progressives, on the unspoken assumption that the clingers were destined to slow irrelevance and with them their retrograde and obstructionist ideas. In other words, the Left could win most presidential elections of the future, as Obama did, by writing off the interior and hyping identity politics on the two coasts.

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  36. So they to do this the hard way…

    Dave (445e97)

  37. *want to do this

    mg (9e54f8)

  40. I won’t read the whole thing, but Kevin Williamson is right. This is nothing like his situation. He and the Atlantic experimented with an cross-species relationship that could never have worked out. This girl is nothing more than an indiscreet member of the NYT community.

    nk (dbc370)

  41. To paraphrase Ms. Jeong: “It wasn’t racist, it was counter-trolling!”

    Paul Montagu (84878a)

  42. I don’t know what’s dumber: making those tweets or not deleting them last year, last month or last week.

    Dave (445e97)

  43. I dare you to get on Wikipedia and play “Things white people can definitely take credit for,” it’s really hard.

Racist and completely ignorant of history. Sounds like a perfect fit for the Old Gray Lady.

  46. Well, ,she sounds lovely. Probably a delight to be around.

  47. But that’s what a degree in race and gender studies gets you.

    Narciso (eb271e)

    — Midol, Vagisil, and Pepto-Bismol. Give them a try.

  49. I want to see an apology, hopefully abject. I mean, in Atlanta, we have pitchers apologizing for being insensitive as a teenager. This is recent. She is a writer, knowing the effect of her words. She wants the paycheck; she can grovel some.

    Appalled (959225)

  50. If I am not taking this as seriously as you guys …. An actual quote by a lady, an educated lady with a post-graduate degree at that, from my variegated youth: “Greek men are scum! They only marry Greeks. They’re scum!” She must have meant it, she said it twice. 😉

    nk (dbc370)

  51. Here is the Times’ justification for keeping Jeong on staff, in spite of the tweets:

We hired Sarah Jeong because of the exceptional work she has done covering the internet and technology at a range of respected publications.

Her journalism and the fact that she is a young Asian woman have made her a subject of frequent online harassment. For a period of time she responded to that harassment by imitating the rhetoric of her harassers. She sees now that this approach only served to feed the vitriol that we too often see on social media. She regrets it, and The Times does not condone it.

We had candid conversations with Sarah as part of our thorough vetting process, which included a review of her social media history. She understands that this type of rhetoric is not acceptable at The Times and we are confident that she will be an important voice for the editorial board moving forward.

I guess if she we were a white American male writer with a similar resume, and had also been frequently been harassed online, the Times’ would have hired that person too. Uh-huh. Sure they would have…

    Dana (023079)

  52. I think it’s great they hired her. It leaves absolutely no question about the double-standard rule that is pervasive at the paper, and leaves no question about the lack of integrity in the editorial staff’s views regarding race, sex, and more importantly, what is acceptable hate and unacceptable hate. Or that which they are willing to make an exception for. They are a private entity, and can do what they want with regard to hiring.

    Dana (023079)

  53. Personally, I think she was hired because of all the butthurt from liberals about the NYT taking on Bret Stephens, not that her hire will shut them up.

    Paul Montagu (84878a)

  54. Here is Jeong’s explanation for the tweets:

I engaged in what I thought of at the time as counter-trolling. While it was intended as satire, I deeply regret that I mimicked the language of my harassers. These comments were not aimed at a general audience, because general audiences do not engage in harassment campaigns. I can understand how hurtful these comments are out of context, and would not do it again.

Rest easy, white guys, you’re safe with Jeong now. Heh.

    Dana (023079)

  55. Link.

    Dana (023079)

  56. My Heavens, undergraduate studies at Berkeley, law degree from Harvard. Obsessed with issues of race and gender. Red and blue streaks in her hair. Hates white people. Lives in Portland. Could she be a bigger stereotype?

    JVW (30a532)

  57. According to the timestamps on the Tweets that Patterico provided, she kept up her hate-whitey “trolling” act for something like 18 months. That’s dedication to the craft (or maybe it’s an insight into her true character).

    JVW (30a532)

  58. Steven Hayward at Powerline found another anti-whitey tweet from December 2013, so her “trolling” had at least a full two year run.

    JVW (30a532)

  59. Dana —

You should note that the apology included a couple of the hateful things she was responding to. Is it enough? Um, she doesn’t really say “I don’t believe the hatefulness I wrote.” So this is one of those non apology things that people float in hopes of getting away with something. Sigh.

    Appalled (959225)

  60. @49. “I engaged in what I thought of at the time as counter-trolling. While it was intended as satire, I deeply regret that I mimicked the language of my harassers. I can understand how hurtful these posts are out of context, and would not do it again,” Jeong wrote.

  120. cabbage is low carb and politicizing restaurants is super gay it’s the kind of thing an obama would do but not a real american

restaurants are where you go for to get away from politics not to be super political and you should really try to be respectful of your fellow diners and not stare too much maybe just a little like if you see Leighton Meester

  121. Tillman (d34303) — 8/2/2018 @ 2:04 pm

The hire was announced last night. The story broke pretty quickly, and by this morning (West Coast time) was hot news (this post is from 7:35 am Pacific). I wrote at 11:15 am that I would be checking Fox and CNN, and I figured there would be a story on Fox’s homepage and there wouldn’t be a story anywhere on CNN’s site. I didn’t say that there would never be any mention, but I suppose I can see how you might have interpreted it that way. But for the record, the CNN story is timestamped 4:18 pm Eastern Time, so it appeared two full hours after I made my check.

  124. And I love how CNN went to Edward Snowden — Edward Effen’ Snowden! — as a character witness for Ms. Jeong. As if most of us are going to say, “Well, if a traitor to our country is taking her side then there must be some unseen qualities to her character!”

Man, CNN has become such a cruelly stupid outlet.

    JVW (30a532)

  125. But for the record, the CNN story is timestamped 4:18 pm Eastern Time, so it appeared two full hours after I made my check.

Those layers of fact-checking take time, JVW.

    Dave (445e97)

  126. Mr. Snowden blewed the whistle on a dirty corrupt and out of control NSA that hasn’t been fixed at all – it’s still every bit as corrupt as the trashy FBI!

NSA deleted surveillance data it pledged to preserve

The agency tells a federal judge that it is investigating and ‘sincerely regrets its failure.’

and a completely separate example of sleazy NSA lawlessness here:

  127. You can have a pass, this time, JVW. 🙂

But if she sent these tweets out in response to racists harassing her as some claim, and they’re not just racist rants ex nihilo, then I think this post should be updated to reflect that. I’d like to see the tweets in context.

    Tillman (d34303)

  128. But if she sent these tweets out in response to racists harassing her as some claim, and they’re not just racist rants ex nihilo, then I think this post should be updated to reflect that. I’d like to see the tweets in context.

We’ve pointed out earlier in this thread that she sent out these anti-white tweets for over two years. I kind of doubt that each and every time is was in response to something that some alt right troll tweeted at her.

    JVW (30a532)

  129. It is common in these situations to call for her to be fired. I don’t get why. I say, she should stay on. Shows what kind of scum bags the NY Times is run by.

(The same thing keeps happening in Britain in the Labour party. Every once in a while, it comes out that some Labour functionary made anti-Semitic remarks, the person is removed, and everyone gets all in a snit. For example, it recently came out that a Councillor on a local town counsel posted on his Facebook page that Jews drink blood. I say, keep them on. That is the face of the party. Don’t hide it, let everyone know who you really are.)

    Bored Lawyer (998177)

  130. The thing people don’t seem to get is that the NYT doesn’t care whether anyone is upset by this hire or whether they are being hypocrtical. They don’t care because they don’t have to. They can set the rules, change them, and basically do whatever they want, whenever they want. Agitating the masses = more clicks on their page. She didn’t apologize. She wasn’t told to delete her tweets or close her account as terms of her hire. They don’t care, but are instead smugly patting themselves on the backs for the win.

    Dana (023079)

  131. Very true, Dana. Plus, sometime during the George W. Bush administration I think the NYT decided that its business plan would be to sell subscriptions to urban leftists and those who wanted to be just like them. They likely do have some legacy Republican subscribers — people over the age of 60 who continue to get the paper just because they have their entire adult lives — but from here on in the NYT knows that it can only stay in business by telling progressives what they want to hear. Keeping Ross Douthat around is just because they have a few remaining elderly readers who want to hear from the other side, and also he’s probably the only writer in the entire building who knows one thing about traditional religion.

If @realDonaldTrump does not read the tweets of the pride of the NYT, Sarah Jeong, to the crowd at his rally Saturday, he is missing a perfect opportunity to show the media to America for who exactly who they are.

  142. Mr. Mirengoff, who is a famous lawyer and also a white-complected male, has done some perspicacious thinkings about the confirm that the Senate has to do on another white-complected male Mr. Kavvy-kav

However, it should be possible to get the documents to Senators much more quickly than the Archives review process permits. According to the Washington Post, President Bush has authorized making the Kavanaugh documents available, and a group of lawyers, led by Bush’s presidential records representative, is reviewing them. More than 50 lawyers from three different firms are participating. The Bush records review team has already reviewed 125,000 pages and handed them over to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Sen. Chuck Schumer objects that the Bush records team might withhold documents the Archives would be willing to produce. However, there is no reason to assume bad faith by the review team.

And even if one is concerned about this possibility, one solution would be to have the Archives folks review any documents the Bush team says should be withheld. Presumably, that would be a small batch of papers.

Schumer’s goal is obstruction, and the massive amount of documents Grassley has asked for gives him an opening. However, it should be possible to close it.

i don’t trust the trash who work at the National Archives that’s for sure they stink like #resistance and yeast infection

  149. Maybe Ms. Jeong isn’t a racist, but she’s certainly a hypocrite and internet bully.

I’ve already argued today that Sarah Jeong, the new New York Times editorial board member, shouldn’t be fired for her old racist tweets, since social media mobbing has become far too prevalent, and since her tweets were known about by her employer when they hired her.
With that said, Sarah Jeong is one of the biggest hypocrites in America if she thinks she opposes the social media mob now targeting her. On occasion after occasion, she has come out in favor of social media mobbing, including the destruction of lives and careers.

  156. D’Souza commented on the New York Times‘ recent hiring of Sarah Jeong: “The notion that the New York Times would hire a bigoted editorial writer is only surprising if you think that progressivism and the Democratic Party are somehow anti-racist. If you thought they were anti-racist, then this becomes an anomaly. On the other hand, if you actually know the history of progressivism and the Democratic Party, you realize that bigotry has actually been its unifying glue.”
