Scott Pruitt Resigns

Filed under: General — JVW @ 1:14 pm

[guest post by JVW]

I think many of us here appreciated Pruitt’s steady work in rolling back some of the more ridiculous and onerous regulations imposed during the Obama years, but it’s hard to get past the idea that he was yet another swamp rat who had no moral compunction about living large on the taxpayer dime. It shouldn’t be difficult to find a — ahem, ahem — public servant who doesn’t feel the need to live like a mafia chieftain.

So long, Scott.

  8. Over at Powerline, Steven Hayward points out that the green industry and its media allies have had their long knives out for Pruitt from the beginning. That may be well and true, but as Mr. Hayward points out, “[Pruitt] seemed to have more than the usual self-regard and obliviousness to ‘appearances,’ whose double-standards Republicans need to understand when they go to DC.”

Steven Hayward also suggests that Pruitt really started courting trouble once the EPA announced it was reviewing the ethanol blending requirements. That is a fascinating development, if it is indeed true.

He is the best EPA Administrator we’ve ever had. He is probably a dick, too. Given how hated he was, it’s probably a good thing to be a dick.

Completely disagree. Back when Roy Moore lost the election due to being a creep, there were dire predictions that this would become a standard procedure employed against other Republican candidates. Didn’t happen. It’s the same here. There aren’t any other cabinet members being pilloried for being swamp rats. The simplest explanation is most likely correct: Moore was a sex pest, and Pruitt is a self-serving douchebag.

  24. Was not a fan of Ed Schultz but I did not know this part of his history:

He earned All-Conference, All-District and NAIA All-America honors while playing for the Dragons. He was also named an NCAA Division II honorable mention All-America.

He held 19 MSUM, seven Northern Intercollegiate Conference and two national passing records when he left MSUM, and he had led the NCAA Division II in passing in 1977, the same year he was named the NIC’s most valuable player.

Schultz had an extended tryout in 1978 in the Oakland Raiders training camp as a free agent before being cut. He then took a position as a broadcaster in the KXJB-TV sports department in Fargo.“

Why can’t it be true that Pruitt was self-serving and wanted to live like a pasha, but at the same time he was the target of a political assassination orchestrated by the green lobby and their media allies? Though it is certainly true that when you have a huge target on your back you oughtn’t give your enemies a clear shot at you.

$50K in office furniture? For a cabinet-level officer? I’m willing to be that’s a standard deviation to the low side. I bet Hillary spent that much on a chair.

  39. When the king’s ministers see that the king can get away with seemingly anything, it does not encourage good discipline within the ranks of the king’s ministers. Pruitt should have been taken to the woodshed, obliged to clean up his act, and put back in harness to use his very formidable energy, advocacy, and authority in service of conservative, constitutional government. He’d have shaped up or been shipped out. I regret his self-immolation, but the managers of the managers failed to do his duty when it came to Pruitt.

  40. Somebody like Malvaney perhaps? Sober minded, diligent, righty.

But honestly, can anyone survive a full court press from Big Enviro?

    Patricia (3363ec)

  41. Kevin M

One of Trump’s Big Promises was to Drain the Swamp. Did Hillary do that?
Instead he kept Pruitt on despite Pruitt acting like a cartoon caricature of a Swampdweller.
If you make swampdraining a core campaign issue then you ought to at least make sure the Swamp gets no bigger.
I am just wondering what straw broke the camel’s back.

    kishnevi (4777d8)

  42. Those who aspire to survive a full court press from Big Enviro must commit first to being, like Caesar’s wife, above suspicion themselves.

Of course, this Caesar’s wives weren’t the ones banging the “models,” so I guess the comparison breaks down, or Pruitt thought that it did.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  43. Right keep going:

That troll ma Richards featured the justices mother back in 1988, thus was part of their pantomime horse, act

    Narciso (dba109)

  44. Let’s take a look at Big Enviro’s attempts to crush previous Republican EPA admins:

2001-2003 Christine Whitman: resigned after refusing a request by VP Cheney to implement a rule easing pollution controls that was later found to violate the Clean Air Act.
2003-2005 Mike Leavitt: No notable controversies, promoted to Sec of HHS
2005-2009 Stephen Johnson: Repeatedly butted heads with environmentalists, the state of California, and “the Secretaries of Agriculture, Commerce, Transportation, Energy, Council on Environmental Quality, Office of Science and Technology Policy, Council of Economic Advisors, and Small Business Administration”. Despite these vast and powerful forces arrayed against him, he served until the end of Bush’s term.

I’ll reiterate that Occam’s Razor leads us to the simplest explanation for Pruitt’s downfall: he was a weasel.

    Davethulhu (3fc14a)

  45. I thought he spent too much money on his security detail. Having thought about it, his “secretiveness”, including his safe room, does not bother me. The things he was working on were just the kind of things inside traders, and industrial spies generally, would want to know about. The sweetheart condo deal … that was kind of unseemly.

    nk (dbc370)

  46. Sure, he may be a weasel, but from what I could see, he did a good job. I always thought the proverb about Caesar’s wife was that it was sort of a PR goal, an impossibility. And was Pruitt accused of banging models? That might have been the one thing they didn’t accuse him of.

So let’s get Stephen Thompson in EPA again if he survived the last tour of duty among the hostiles.

I always ask people (the ones conversing in a calm tone of voice): If some regulations at the EPA were good, does that mean all regulations at the EPA in perpetuity are good? When does the law of diminishing returns come into play? Are we all going to die of pollution in the next few years?

    Patricia (3363ec)

  47. The last epa administrator communicated through private emails this, was why they never are going to prosecute Hillary, some of her underlings pretended to be cia operatives.

    Narciso (dba109)

  48. I don’t think that Caesar’s wife applies. There have been dozens of Republican congressional candidates since Roy Moore, and none of them had people coming forward to call them a creep. If the next EPA director is forced out, it’ll be for the same reason that Trump is setting a record for the biggest staff turnover: Trump and his advisers are terrible at vetting candidates.

Actually, the historical event behind the saying is not far off that.
Julius was Pontifex Maximus, meaning chief priest of Rome. His wife was accordingly in charge of one set of ceremonies which was supposed to be for women only, and held at his house because she was in charge. A well known scumbag disguised himself as a women and participated in the ceremonies. When this became public knowledge, Mrs. Ceasar was accused of allowing a sexual orgy in her home when it was supposed to a woman only affair. Even though it was not actually her fault, she was blamed–and divorced by Ceasar.
