#Winning: Ted Cruz Beats Jimmy Kimmel in One on One

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:04 am

Ted Cruz defeated Jimmy Kimmel in a game of one-on-one for charity:

“The reason this is happening is because after Game 7 of the [NBA] Western Conference Finals, I likened Sen. Cruz to a blobfish,” Kimmel explained, according to Deadline.com. “And he did not like that … so he challenged me to a game of one-on-one. And I accepted.”

The two players agreed that the loser would donate $5,000 to a charity picked by the winner, but both later agreed to donate $10,000 to both charities, the Texas Tribune reported.

Cruz selected Generation One Texas, an anti-poverty organzation, while Kimmel chose the Texas Children’s Hospital, the Tribune reported.

No, no, Ted. You’re supposed to insult Kimmel’s appearance twice as hard. Haven’t you learned anything?

I bet the money that Ted Cruz pledged to charity actually goes to charity, and not to a portrait of Ted Cruz in his offices or some dishonest stunt like that.

I bet it doesn’t take months for the charities to get their money, either.

What a mensch. How I wish this guy were our president.

  1. What a mensch. How I wish this guy were our president.

Really? I thought you didn’t respect him anymore. After he endorsed Trump, didn’t you say something to that effect? Something like Cruz wasn’t the man you thought he was.

Mine, too. If* the Norks “de-nuclearize” and the Korean war ends, I will not wish we had any other president. Yes, that is enough, at least to put that wish to bed.

Happy to hear it, though I don’t think he needed “forgiving”. Though he wasn’t my choice for President, I think he does mostly good work in the Senate.

I think it is progress on your part that you are able to support a man who supports Trump.

  8. “What a mensch. How I wish this guy were our president.”

Yes, well, failing that, a supreme court justice appointment for life would be my next choice.

Attorney General over the next six years would be good too.

I say that as a Texas voter who intends to do my part to keep Mr Cruz in his present job in the Senate. I don’t object to him in that role. I just agree the “mensch” could adjust to higher duties well.

  52. LOL, HotAir has some funny details:

Originally the game was supposed to be to 15, but after 40 minutes the two of them agreed to play to 11.

Cruz and Kimmel missed more than 100 shots between them during the game. Toward the end, Cruz’s shirt had darkened a few shades from his sweat. Courtside helpers had to wipe the floor a few times because both players were sweating profusely. Cruz joked afterward that they also set the Guinness World Record for fouls.

At the end, Kimmel couldn’t resist one more jab.

“Ted, you’re a good sport,” he said. “I still think you’re a terrible senator.”

“Kids, at least you got to see your daddy win something,” he added to Cruz’s daughters, who joined Cruz and his wife, Heidi, on the court.

Cruz did a fun thing. I like this side of him, and really hope he continues to show it. And Kimmel was man enough to attempt to back up his taunts, and fail somewhat gracefully.

I don’t think the behavior of anyone else is relevant to this story. We live in an age where YMMV is a given. Intersectionality, you know…

  118. Here is consistency for you, Haiku.

What kind of men think it is manly to insult people, or don’t even know that being snide is an insult? I know some guys like stupid trash talk and this post shows there is humor in sport trash talk, but is that how they do/should treat people in their life? And what kind of women do they live with if they think “Ladies” is a substitute for calling someone a whiner and a crybaby?

This isn’t only about Hoagie, it is you and Anon Y. Mous, too. If you don’t like me noticing, don’t insult people and don’t use “Ladies” as an insult when someone says things you don’t like.

    DRJ (15874d)

  119. Ok, so you think I am snide in my comments. Thank you for that clarity. I don’t mean to be snide but it is always possible. Speak up when you think that happens, instead of nursing a grievance that you think I get the benefit of unfair treatment.

I think you see what is in your mind. Is it possible you are seeing “snidery” where none exists?

I disagree that he’s clueless. He’s simply a very insightful troll. Like many trolls, if you do not respond to him, he will get more personal until he elicits that trolled reaction and now all attention is on Haiku and not on the topic of discussion. The discussion is now thwarted and he ‘won’ by vandalizing the blog.

He knows DRJ is extremely polite, even to people she disagrees with very strongly, and even to people who are being very rude to her. Calling DRJ “snide” obviously is directed at attacking her most well known values. And now we’re all focused on Haiku.

The deems are burning this country down and stamping on the ashes

Sounds a little bit hysterical. The democrats have a lot less power than the republicans. How are they to blame for our problems? The GOP has the Senate, the House, the Supreme Court, the White House, much of industry, and plenty of media. The GOP stands at minimum right there with the democrats. This common defense mechanism of partisans, to fixate on the other side and deflect blame to them, isn’t even relevant to Ted Cruz playing basketball.

We know the media is ridiculous these days. Fox News’s bias against democrats is absolutely embarrassing for conservatives like myself. It’s simply another version of the bias against republicans you see on CNN or the New York Times.

But look how the trolls respond to anyone trying to be fair. Ankle biting saturates the discussion threads on this blog, for example, and this blog does hit both biased lefty media and our GOP administration. It’s a better business model to pick up the pom poms for one side. So every loud voice is biased, every political bad player can point to that bias as an excuse, and every partisan can fixate on the other side. Over the decades, this cycle of bias and blame has made everything worse.

So stop being part of the problem. Focus on your own side and what they need to do better. Everyone in our society needs to be encouraged to do this. It’s called accountability and it should be considered fundamental to having integrity. The GOP lacks it entirely.

    Dustin (ba94b2)

  122. Thank you, Dustin. Well stated.

    Simon Jester (066e4a)

  123. “Calling DRJ “snide” obviously is directed at attacking her most well known values. And now we’re all focused on Haiku”

Here is an example of Dustin’s penchant for mischaracterization. Not once in this thread did I say, suggest that DRJ was or is “snide”. I mentioned inconsistent. And that all of us may be “guilty” of being bothered by a “snide” comment made by a commenter and yet never call it out when someone who thinks like we do employ the same. I included myself in that. At the tail end of a thread. Beldar is often snide. Gryph employs very foul language and imagery. Never pointed out or mentioned.

    That’s all. Be consistent.

    Colonel Haiku (6d3cf0)

  124. . But please let’s at least be consistent in noticing the snidery.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0) — 6/17/2018 @ 11:36 am

Because it was an example of how the snidery is noticed when some do it but not when others do it. And it’s not just you who does it, DRJ. Others do the same, including me. That’s why.

    Colonel Haiku (6d3cf0) — 6/18/2018 @ 6:18 am

When folks are accused of being snide and others are often just as snide – if not more so – but are never called on it, it is an inconsistent application of rules.

    Colonel Haiku (6d3cf0) — 6/18/2018 @ 8:38 am

So Haiku is calling DRJ “MORE” snide than others, while complaining that she benefits for Patterico’s inconsistent application of rules.

    Then Haiku claims

Not once in this thread did I say, suggest that DRJ was or is “snide”.

Because Haiku is a very bitter and dishonest person who comes here to get attention and be ugly.

Here is an example of Dustin’s penchant for mischaracterization.

Haiku has been on a campaign to call me dishonest because he knows I always admit mistakes and try very hard to debate with integrity. Like Haiku’s repeated criticisms of DRJ as snide, his repeated criticisms of me as “Mischaracterizing” are intended to attack my most central values. It’s a way for a troll to get more personal.

How many of Haiku’s comments today were contributing to the actual topic of discussion? Most of them are personal attacks on values commenters, and a few are simply completely out of place links to some outrage article that serves only to distract. You use a lot of weasel words and deflections to avoid accountability for your comments, but I never see anyone actually fall for it. We all know what you saying about DRJ.

    That’s all. Be consistent.

    Colonel Haiku

Who are you to dictate how this blog should be run? You hate it when a discussion is pleasant and choose to constantly flame people. If you hate how this blog is run, why don’t you find a place to comment where you don’t hate it so much? My guess is that because you don’t really want to discuss any topic this blog actually posts about, you really want to strike out against those discussions.

    Dustin (ba94b2)

  125. Look, Dustin, you misunderstand me: “Because it was an example of how the snidery is noticed when some do it but not when others do it. And it’s not just you who does it, DRJ. Others do the same, including me. That’s why.

I did not say or imply that DRJ was or is snide. I said she notices it when some e.g, those who usually disagree with her, are snide and doesn’t mention it when others of her mindset employ the snide comments. As many of us do as well.

You are making a big deal out of it to draw attention to yourself. You have in your last few comments and will continue to mischaracterize what i’ve written here. That’s how you roll.

    Kevin M (752a26) — 6/18/2018 @ 11:49 am

Hillary was an astonishingly poor candidate, and she lost largely because of the leaks of information about her misconduct (or investigations of her misconduct).

The GOP had several candidates who would have done better. Walker, Rubio, and Cruz are all very well spoken, with a positive message, and they just seem like good people. I guess it’s an open question about whether we would have had the same leaks about Clinton that hurt her at the end.

If Trump’s fans think he was unique in getting that out there, perhaps they should reconsider their views on the investigation of his campaign’s collusion with the Russian government.

I think Hillary sinking at the end was a surprise. It certainly surprised Trump with all his claims that Hillary would win and that proved the election is rigged. Cruz would have done well. Clearly he has stamina! I’d love to see Trump attempt to play basketball.

    Dustin (ba94b2)

The vast majority of your comments in various threads today are about how terrible the people commenting here are, and how terribly unfair the rules here are. You don’t care about anything else.

I literally just quoted a ton of your comments today so this is a weak effort to lie, Haiku. You lie all the time so you should be a lot better at it.

    Dustin (ba94b2)

  137. That’s another lie, Dustin.

    Colonel Haiku (6d3cf0)

  138. You are a lying, mischaracterizing scoundrel.

    Colonel Haiku (6d3cf0)

  139. Read this thread, Dustin. And then go to the troll poll. You are lying.

    Colonel Haiku (6d3cf0)

  140. I’m in the minority in this area, but I strongly believe that incivility is leaky. You have a person you don’t like, and it’s okay to call them names. Then pretty soon it leaks everywhere. Everything becomes silly name calling and childish insults.

How much better to, well, stick to the topics and not call people names. Heck, didn’t someone call Patterico a bad name recently and get a time out? Or call DRJ a leftist? Good Lord. Think about those two bizarre events.

More and more, the comments section is kind of like this:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-l6tHeseDY

And that’s fine, so long as Patterico approves. But I think all the middle school nonsense is precisely what the Powers That Be want.

    Simon Jester (eaeb1d)

  141. That’s another lie, Dustin.

    Colonel Haiku (6d3cf0) — 6/18/2018 @ 12:26 pm

Nah, these are three more examples of how you are obsessed with insulting me. The threads since I got back to commenting here are absolutely full of such comments.

It’s the truth that you have criticized the commenters here and the unfair rules here many times today. That’s not a lie at all, but you calling that a lie is.

Why does it make you so angry when I call you out for conduct you clearly intended to do? Isn’t it less stressful to just stop bashing me all day long, than it is to debate whether you do so?

    Dustin (ba94b2)

  142. Simon’s right. And my responding to Haiku is surely part of the problem. Sticking to the topics is much more interesting and enjoyable, which is why some who clearly have an axe to grind will try to make these discussions less interesting and enjoyable.

    Dustin (ba94b2)

  143. When folks are accused of being snide and others are often just as snide – if not more so – but are never called on it, it is an inconsistent application of rules.

    Colonel Haiku (6d3cf0) — 6/18/2018 @ 8:38 am

If this was interpreted as me saying or implying DRJ is/was snide, I did not intend that. And I just read her comments from early (my pacific time) this morning. What I was trying to say – and after saying so several times and still not getting it across, so it must be me – is that snide is snide, no matter who employs it. I will read Beldar’s comments and think why is he being rude or insulting and not think the same – or view it as negatively – as when Hoagie is snide, for example. Now place DRJ in my spot and reverse the roles of Beldar and Hoagie. Alls I’m saying… or trying to say. And most of us are guilty. Someone will view a commenter and think him valuable and above reproach, while others will remember the mischaracterizations, smarmy platitudes and such and think, meh…

    Colonel Haiku (6d3cf0)

  144. “It’s the truth that you have criticized the commenters here and the unfair rules here many times today.“

They are not rules, it is personal behavior and personal bias. Is that difficult to understand? And no I haven’t criticized other commenters here “many times today”. I’ve criticized you.

    Colonel Haiku (6d3cf0)

  145. “Sticking to the topics is much more interesting…”

Try as I might, I haven’t located any basketball-related comments from you on this thread.

    Colonel Haiku (6d3cf0)

  146. =Haiku!= Gesundheit!
