Three Cheers for Curtailing Obnoxious Traditions

The Administration announced today that President Trump would once again be skipping the annual White House Correspondents Dinner, a dreadful exercise where fatuous blowhards invite numbskull celebrities to dine in a Washington DC hotel ballroom, while Democrat Presidents are fawned over and Republican Presidents are skewered by hack comics chosen for their obedience to the diktats of social justice. President Trump also skipped last year’s gala, so he is now zero for two in attendance as Chief Executive, having had his ego bruised when he attended as a civilian seven years ago.

I am fine with the President skipping this stupid event, whose ostensible purpose is to raise scholarship money for journalism students but who is apparently spending a consistently lower share of its revenue on scholarships, while it’s executive director rakes in the compensation bucks. In that regard, it is pretty much the perfect Washington institution of this modern era.

While we’re at it, it would be great if this White House unilaterally discontinued the stupid habit of bringing in rich and famous athletes to be celebrated. Professional ballplayers are probably the last people in the world who need the extra adulation, and the President ought to have better things to do than to bask in the reflected glory of fabulously rich jocks. If we’re going to have a populist President, let’s have him go whole-hog and drastically curtail the dumb habit of hobnobbing with the media, entertainment, and business elite.
