Patterico's Pontifications

I got nothing. I watched the Metropolitan Opera movie broadcast of “Cosi Fan Tutte” this morning. Mrs. P. and I are going to watch Monty Python’s Holy Grail tonight, with after-commentary by John Cleese. Right now I am going to take a walk to feed my new Fitbit Alta, which has been a nice way of encouraging myself to walk and exercise more, and monitor caloric intake with their online dashboard.

I’m not interested in the stories floating around out there, but maybe you are. The umpteenth Big Media story about Trump Unleashed? Pass. Roseanne doing well in the ratings? Pass. Laura Ingraham battle with teenager? Nope. Trump tweets about Amazon? Don’t care.

Maybe you have a topic that isn’t deadly boring. Meanwhile, I’m taking my stroll.

Chinese Space Station Could Crash to Earth Late Sunday or Early Monday

Quiet solar activity has once again pushed back the re-entry time for a China’s falling space station, Tiangong-1, according to the European Space Agency (ESA) and U.S.-based analysis group Aerospace Corp.

The doomed Tiangong-1 is now expected to fall to Earth around 7:25 p.m. EDT (2325 GMT) on Sunday (April 1), with a window that could stretch into early Monday, officials with ESA’s Space Debris Office said in an update this morning (March 31). As of 5 p.m. EDT today, Aerospace Corp., which is also tracking Tiangong-1, predicts Tiangong-1 will crash at 7:53 p.m. EDT (2353 GMT) Sunday, give or take 7 hours. -space.com

i’ll just say for what it is it’s extremely well-executed

this wasn’t terrible but i was more intrigued by the house than by the plot – until the end

Of course, that’s not all they are. They’ve made the dictionary look cool, hip and modern. Often, they make the job of lexicography actually look fun. And they’ll tweet about everything from the weather to the World Series to the Oscars.

But when it comes to making fun of politicians, the dictionary’s editors are clearly partisan. They didn’t harass Hillary Clinton, and they don’t needle sports stars, celebrities, or, well . . . anyone else like they needle the President and his people.

Theoretically, even that could be okay—a good, playful, occasional joke from the dictionary could have the whole country laughing. But if you mock one person too often, you start to reveal a pattern. If that pattern persists, the fun and games lose their light-hearted feel, and begin to betray bias instead.”

  39. I think we all know about Grover Cleveland’s scare quote love child, but I didn’t realize it was a straight up rape child:

Their meal together was a pleasant one. Cleveland escorted Halpin back to her room at a downtown boarding house. What happened next, according to Halpin’s affidavit, would in another era be classified as date rape. Cleveland sexually assaulted her “[b]y use of force and violence and without my consent,” Halpin reported, adding that when she threatened to notify the authorities, Cleveland “told me he was determined to ruin me if it cost him $10,000, if he was hanged by the neck for it. I then and there told him that I never wanted to see him again [and] commanded him to leave my room, which he did.”

What happened to Maria Halpin next was a cruel injustice straight out of a Charles Dickens novel. Cleveland arranged to have the child forcibly removed from his mother and placed in the Buffalo Orphan Asylum. Maria Halpin was thrown into the Providence Lunatic Asylum, although the facility’s medical director quickly released her after an evaluation, concluding (correctly) that she was not insane and that her incarceration was the result of an abuse of power by political elites.

  64. Can We Please Stop Praising The Enemies Of Liberty On The Left With The Term ‘Liberal’?
Recent events have clearly demonstrated the Left is no longer Liberal. Perhaps that was never the case in the first place, but at present the evidence is quite clear. The Left is no longer a champion of Liberty.

    5. Leftist and Liberal are easily interchangeable.
Old habits die-hard, many of us are just used to referring to Leftists as Liberals. Well, it’s very important to get out of that habit. Both start with the letter ‘L’ and have the same number of characters, so why not use the correct word?

    4. Leftism [Socialism] and Liberalism are based on two entirely different concepts.
The Oxford English dictionary defines the term Liberal in part as:
Favourable to or respectful of individual rights and freedoms
1.2(In a political context) favouring individual liberty, free trade
Origin Middle English: via Old French from Latin liberalis, from liber ‘free (man)’.

    3. Collectivism clearly belongs on the Socialist-Left while the word closely related to Liberty belongs on the Conservative-Right.
Again, Leftists are collectivists, while Liberals (favouring individual liberty) are individualists. They have much more in common with Conservatarians than Leftists.

    2. Before the word was hijacked by the Left, Liberal ideals were essentially Conservative ideals.

    1. Using the wrong ‘L’ word undeserving praises the Left while insulting true Liberals who are potential allies in the cause of Conserving Liberty.

Known as the Hart Tribe, the multiracial family of two married women — Sarah and Jennifer Hart — and six adopted children often took spontaneous road trips to camp and hike and traveled to festivals and other events, offering hugs and promoting unity.

Authorities don’t know exactly when the wreck took place. A passing motorist discovered the vehicle on March 26, three days after social service authorities in Washington state opened an investigation apparently prompted by a neighbor’s complaint that the children were being deprived of food. Authorities believe at least one felony was committed but Van Patten declined to specify.

Well before the wreck, Sarah Hart pleaded guilty in 2011 to a domestic assault charge in Douglas County, Minnesota, telling authorities “she let her anger get out of control” while spanking her 6-year-old adopted daughter, court records show.

And, yes, the media will present the Hart mothers as nuts: a crazy, Godless vision of non-hetero and racial harmony. We must resist this reading, and also the impulse to label Bernie supporters as cray-cray. There is much, much more crazy in Trump’s swamp of supporters. Nevertheless, it’s looking like the Hart case will be a complex mixture of race and madness and leftist despair.

  165. WOMAN ARRESTED FOR TRAINING SQUIRRELS TO ATTACK HER EX-BOYFRIEND

    http://worldnewsdailyreport.com/woman-arrested-for-training-squirrels-to-attack-her-ex-boyfriend/

45-year old Janice Smith was arrested this morning by officers of the Detroit Police Department for allegedly capturing numerous squirrels and training them to attack her former lover.
The victim, 51-year-old James Robinson, was presumably attacked by the rodents on more than a dozen occasions over the last month.

These attacks caused him many serious injuries, including the loss of two fingers and one testicle, bitten off by his attackers.

The poor man had no idea why squirrels kept attacking him until he saw his ex-girlfriend, a former circus animal trainer, cheering the animals during one of the attacks.

“She was partially hidden behind some bushes, but I could clearly see her and hear her. She was yelling orders at the squirrels and telling them to attack me.”

Realizing that his life could be in danger, Mr. Robinson filed a complaint with the police who later paid a visit to Ms. Smith.

In her residence, they found a dozen cages, holding a total of 27 squirrels. They also found two training dummies with pictures of Mr. Robinson taped over their faces.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig confirmed that Janice Smith had admitted that she was responsible for the attacks and confessed her strange plot.

“Ms. Smith confessed to capturing and training squirrels to harass and attack her ex-boyfriend. She used to train lions for a circus, so it was easy for her to make the animals do as she wanted. She said she hoped to raise an army of up to 50 or 100 animals.”

Janice Smith’s lawyers have demanded for her to undergo a psychological evaluation, claiming that she was unfit to stand trial.

They say that her choice of training squirrels instead of dogs or bears suggests that she might be suffering from mental problems.

If she is judged fit to stand trial, Ms. Smith will be facing a maximum of 65 years in prison.

I think using squirrels instead of dogs suggests the opposite. She’s an evil genius. Like a Batman villian.

If they send her to an asylum, she’ll be too close to trees. Pretty soon she’ll train a squirrel to get the key.

    Dear New Yorker:

Participatory Budgeting New York City (PBNYC) is a democratic process in which YOU directly decide how to spend part of the public budget. Council Members choose to join PBNYC, giving $1 to $2 million from their budget for the whole community to participate in decision-making. Community members discuss local needs and develop proposals to meet those needs. Through a public vote, residents then decide which proposals to fund.

Click on the video below for a personal message from Speaker Johnson regarding this year’s PB vote

That is where YOU come in! PB Vote Week runs from April 7th to April 15th.

Each of the 27 participating NYC Council districts have finalized their ballots with projects for improvements to schools, parks, libraries, public housing, and other public/community spaces as part of this year’s PBNYC cycle.

PBNYC is open to everyone age 11 (or at least in 6th grade) and older who lives in one of the 27 participating Council districts – regardless of immigration status, gender, race, ethnicity, or ability.

Click here to see if your Council Member is participating, and then click their name to view their district’s respective projects and voting locations and times. You can scroll down to the bottom of the webpage as well to search for your Council Member/District Number.

    Additionally, you can vote online!

We encourage union members, middle, high school and college students, youth & community organizations, activists, and anyone who wants a say in how millions in their neighborhood are spent to VOTE.

You can also sign up to receive the most up-to-date PBNYC news via text messaging. Text PBNYC to (212) 676-8384 or sign up here.

It’s all, of course from a small pre-selected list of projects.

I hope the Pope is fallible. Without Hell, there is no justice.

I’m not so sure about that. We have justice here, and the idea of Hell may just be a soporific.

The late Iain M Banks wrote a book in his “Culture” series about whether Hell was necessary.

In his far future galactic society, many cultures have digital environments where the dying can be “uploaded” and serve as a “heaven” of sorts. Some cultures ALSO have a digital “hell”, where some get “uploaded” into instead.

There is an abolition movement that seeks to destroy these hells, and they are opposed by firm supporters of eternal “justice.”

Good book, as is the rest of the Culture series (soon to be an Amazon TV series). The installment above is called “Surface Detail” and can be ordered from Amazon over to the right.
