School Shooting In Florida Leaves 17 Dead

Filed under: General — Dana @ 5:35 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Horrible:

[P]olice say an expelled student returned to campus and opened fire with an assault rifle, killing 17 and wounding 15 more in the worst school shooting in Florida history.

Just before dismissal at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, thousands of students puzzled at the sound of a fire alarm were launched into a panic when gunfire punctuated the din. As teachers and students fled through hallways and hid under desks, a gunman opened fire, leaving a trail of bodies and stunned confusion in his wake.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office says Nikolas Cruz, 19, killed 17 teenagers and adults, and sent 15 more to the hospital with bullet wounds. Wielding an AR-15 and equipped with multiple magazines, he gunned down a dozen people inside buildings on the school’s sprawling campus, two more on the grounds, and one more on the corner of Pine Island Road as he fled.

Two more died at the hospital. Many underwent surgery at Broward Health hospitals. The Broward Sheriff’s Office says the school, home to about 3,200 students, had been cleared by early evening but they had not identified any of the victims.

Apparently, some students were already wary of Cruz:

Some of the current students told authorities they knew the suspect, Milton reports. Student Brandon Minoff, speaking with CBSN, said he had had classes with Cruz. Minoff described the suspect as a “strange kid.”

Another student told CBS News about the suspect, “The kid was crazy. I had engineering with him a couple years ago and he wasn’t allowed to come to school with a backpack and he would threaten students and break glass and get into fights so he got kicked out of school.”

Prayers for the victims and their families left behind. I cannot imagine what they are going through.

And before the debate about guns heats up, Charles C.W. Cooke thoughtfully responded to a bit of provocation. If only more pundits, journalists and members of the media followed suit:

  3. I’m struck by the reports that the high school kids all pegged Cruz as the type of kid who would do this sort of thing. Now it might not be that the kids really were all that prescient and they are just pretending to be in retrospect, but to the degree that Cruz apparently freaked these kids out I wonder if the local authorities had been contacted about his behavior, and I further wonder if the school has a policy whereby local law enforcement is informed about all the students who are expelled from school.

When Jared Loughner shot up all those people in Tucson those years ago, one of the things that really struck me is that he had apparently been recently expelled from Pima Community College because people felt threatened by him, but the campus administration had not bothered to notify the Tucson Police or Pima County Sheriff’s Office, citing those nebulous student private concerns. Maybe that is something that needs to be revisited in light of all of this.

Wow, you get your religion wholesale. Interesting that you think “the collection plate” goes to something other than helping others. “The crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end. Beginning on January 20th, 2017, safety will be restored.”
    – Donald Trump, Republican National Convention, July 21, 2016

You’re right – expecting politicians to keep their promises, and criticizing them when they don’t, has no place in a republic.

We should just cheer when they promise the absurd or impossible to con us into voting for them, and then forget their promises and let them do as they please, without any accountability, once they get into office.

    Dave (445e97)

  46. By the way Dave, what was the context of that promise? Like, maybe, the riots in Ferguson and Baltimore?

    narciso (d1f714)

  56. Or do you seriously imagine he promised all crime would end?

I don’t have to imagine it – it is right there in the text of his acceptance speech.

Here is the entire section (which was the opening of his speech):

Together, we will lead our party back to the White House, and we will lead our country back to safety, prosperity, and peace. We will be a country of generosity and warmth. But we will also be a country of law and order.

Our Convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation. The attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities, threaten our very way of life. Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country.

Americans watching this address tonight have seen the recent images of violence in our streets and the chaos in our communities. Many have witnessed this violence personally, some have even been its victims.

I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end. Beginning on January 20th 2017, safety will be restored.

The most basic duty of government is to defend the lives of its own citizens. Any government that fails to do so is a government unworthy to lead.

    (emphasis added)

Plenty of attacks on police, violence in streets, terrorism in cities and chaos in communities since January 20, 2017. Including today.

Judge him by the standard he himself proclaimed: unworthy to lead.

Yours had a room? Oh, we used to dream of having a room. Actually I was a jock so no smoking. Our HS had Smoker’s Alley. Between the main school and the industrial building. That’s usually where the fights took place, and there were some.

Strangely enough a tobacco shop opened up at the Eastridge Mall. Kids started bringing snuff to school. I actually did some in study hall my senior year but I didn’t really think about it as using tobacco. The best ideas left standing were narrowly tailored interventions to protect subtypes of potential victims, not broad attempts to limit the lethality of guns.

  118. Let me make this abstract discussion clearer with an example. Let us suppose that you consider the correct ideal theory to be of the broadly speaking Rawlsian, social-democratic, liberal egalitarian variety. Suppose that you endorse it because you think that it constitutes the best balance of different things which you deeply value. You think, for instance, that we should try as much as possible to live in a society where everybody has the same opportunities to live a flourishing life and where we all treat one another as equals; but you also think that personal freedom is important, and that honouring the latter will necessarily hinder the former somewhat. For instance, you believe that free choices will necessarily lead people to reach different, sometimes unequal positions; and in particular, you think that personal freedom requires having some sort of market society, which is incompatible with perfect equality. Thus, you conclude that justice is honoured when we reach the ideal balance among these different values; and that, say, a strongly embedded form of capitalism – a social-democracy – is the best way to realize such an ideal.

Very difficult to do legally. The “civil rights” lawyers of today have seen to that. For instance, one pro bono group has promised to sue any county that implements Laura’s Law.

My suggestion: A citizen can go to the police with suspicions about a potential killer. The cops bring it to the City Attorney/DA and they file an OSC if appropriate why the person should not be barred from possession of guns or other weaponry.

Sounds like workplace violence (‘going Postal’) except applied to a school.

some students were already wary of Cruz:

They thought so, but then in a way, they didn’t think so.

What could be helpful is something designed to bring such thoughts to the fore and alert people, except what exactly do you do when the problem is you don’t trust someone not to kill people. Maybe take away his guns.

I had this idea of someone needing to get approval from 10 people, at least three of the opposite sex, who would say this person knows how to use it, or will learn, does not intend to commit a crime, and won’t let it get stolen.

And if it used in a crime within three years, they pay $1,000 – and can’t underwrite any one else, (maybe for a limited term, or maybe there can be extenuating circumstances)

What it would be is they write an insurance policy. If people withdraw from the insurance and the gun owner cannot find a replacement he loses his guns. Maybe one or two can drop off but the payout rises for the remainder.

No psychologist can predict this. Only the people who know the person in question can predict this.

But sometimes it does not deter, especially if someone intends to commit suicide. The only thing is that here, this person looks like he did not intend to commit suicide. So why did he go ahead?

It is possible he had other secondary targets (although usually it is the mass shooting that is the secondary target) and he really did accept that his life ends.

  202. I think the top three modern mass school shootings (with the most victims killed) are Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and now this Florida shooting. All three shooters reportedly had mental illness issues.

    Virginia Tech:

Fairfax County school officials determined that Seung Hui Cho suffered from an anxiety disorder so severe that they put him in special education and devised a plan to help, according to sources familiar with his history, but Virginia Tech was never told of the problem
    ***
Cho’s family said he was always a quiet, reserved child. After he emigrated with his parents from South Korea when he was 8, a great-aunt in Korea said the boy’s mother told her he had autism. “We knew something was wrong,” the aunt, Kim Yang Soon, said in April.

    Sandy Hook:

When Adam was thirteen, Peter and Nancy took him to Paul J. Fox, a psychiatrist, who gave a diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome (a category that the American Psychiatric Association has since subsumed into the broader diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder). Peter and Nancy finally knew what they were up against. “It was communicated as ‘Adam, this is good news. This is why you feel this way, and now we can do something about it,’ ” Peter recalled. But Adam would not accept the diagnosis.

    Florida:

Another relative, who spoke on condition of anonymity over the sensitive matter, said Nikolas had been diagnosed with autism.

Lynda, who died of pneumonia, adopted Nikolas the day he was born.

Nikolas’ father died from a heart attack, the relative said, and Lynda had sought counseling for Nikolas at a young age: “She did her best getting him any help he needed.”

It’s a real concern but not something many want to consider.

It is a horrifying statistic. And it is wrong.

Everytown has long inflated its total by including incidents of gunfire that are not really school shootings. Take, for example, what it counted as the year’s first: On the afternoon of Jan. 3, a 31-year-old man who had parked outside a Michigan elementary school called police to say he was armed and suicidal. Several hours later, he killed himself. The school, however, had been closed for seven months. There were no teachers. There were no students.

It’s the most unfathomable of crimes: a parent killing their own child. It grabs headlines when it happens — like this week in Georgia, where a mom is accused of stabbing four of her children to death. The reality is, filicides happen with depressing regularity in the US. And mothers are almost as likely to be the killers as fathers.

Of course we’re shocked whenever we hear about a parent taking the life of their own children. Think Andrea Yates or Susan Smith. But what’s even more shocking (and sad) is that this type of crime happens a lot. A study in the journal Forensic Science International looked at three decades worth of filicide cases (between 1976 and 2007) and found they occurred about 500 times a year in the US.

The empty schools can be then sold to private schools or even turned into business complexes. The police department should be allowed to keep the profits. We want our men in blue behind this.

County schools can be sold by the local sheriff’s office. Same arrangement. “Support your local sheriff. Turn in your schools.”

What will the students do? They can stay home and sign up for the Khan Academy. It’s online. It’s free. There would soon be a market for similar programs. Churches can create them. Retired teachers can create them. Service organizations can create them. If Salman Khan can do it, others can do it. There is a working model. This isn’t rocket science.

What about the children of mothers who work outside the home? No problem! A city or county can pay profit-seeking charter schools to enroll students. Tax support involves coercion, but it’s better to have private charter schools with armed guards than what we have now. There have been no mass shootings in charter schools. There have not been any gang-related murders, either.
