“May I Touch You Here?”: Is The #MeToo Movement Emasculating Men?

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:00 am

That’s not a headline I would have thought to write yesterday, or the day before that. But each new day brings a new revelation, doesn’t it?

Flash-forward a few months, and Knight, a 25-year-old Washingtonian, is sleeping with someone new. He is asking “Can I touch you here?” “Can I do this?” every step of the way, and his partner wants to know what is with all the questions. She prefers a more proactive approach.

Knight is well-prepared to date in the #MeToo era. He has completed a two-month discussion class on how to reject toxic masculinity. He still has his “Consent is sexy” T-shirt from freshman year of college. He has thought about how men have the power in courtship, and with that, the ability to abuse it. So when he meets a woman while out at a bar, rather than ask for her number and potentially make her feel pressured to give it, he will give her his number and wait for her to text.

Is it right to blame the movement? After all, this guy sounds like the sort of unreconstructed dweeb who will just never have sex, right? But the article actually opens up with an anecdote in which the poor fella does have sex, and the anecdote helps to explain where his testicles went:

Over the summer, Geoffrey Knight is in bed with a woman he is dating. He puts his hand on her breast, and she swats it away. “You need to ask before you touch me,” he recalls her saying. Knight apologizes, saying he had assumed it was okay because they had just had sex.

“You should never make that assumption,” she retorts.

Holy schnikes. It reminds one of the woman in the Aziz Ansari story, who repeatedly believed that she had sent subtle cues to suggest to Ansari how uncomfortable she was with his attempts to have sex — but muddied her message by voluntarily undressing with Ansari and fellating him more than once. Taking such silly behavior seriously apparently turns men into consent-seeking robots, offering signed contracts of consent to women who just disrobed.

None of this is to say that the #MeToo movement is not legitimate or that there is not an obvious, huge, widespread problem with men making unwanted sexual overtures and contact. There quite obviously is. But the New Norms that are being enforced by the more radical proponents of #MeToo have no effect on the men who are the real problem — while in their most extreme form they emasculate men who are trying to do right to begin with, as the quoted passages above show.

As such, these social regulations are like so many other attempts to control behavior by the left: they target the wrong people. It’s reminiscent of gun control. The thug gang members who shoot rivals on the streets couldn’t care less about your rules, while the responsible gun owners are often far too hampered by them.

As usual, leftists ruin everything with their rules, when all that is needed is a healthy dose of common sense.

P.S. Thanks to Allahpundit for the pointer on Twitter to this article, by the way. Easily half of my blog ideas come from his Twitter feed. If I thanked him every time my post was inspired by something he flagged, that’s all I’d ever do.

Then I’ll say it. There is no legitimate, obvious, huge widespread problem with men making unwanted sexual overtures and contact that mature women haven’t handled reliably without all this nonsense in civilized society for generations at least. This crap is just another way for leftists to control people and probably introduce new “classes” in the studies departments of elite leftist colleges to employ the actually unemployable.

  5. If modern Feminists wanted to bring about the future depicted in THE HANDMAID’S TALE, I’m not sure they could have picked a better strategy. Prove to men that if women are allowed any say in how and when and for whom to spread their legs, they will make men miserable and men will decide they don’t have to put up with this sh*t.

    C. S. P. Schofield (99bd37)

  6. First, the left will win in the end: with these onerous “rules,” re consent, men will just give up having sex with women, and young women, who already resent that it is their gender that risks getting pregnant, will take this as a victory. In the end, the real winners are the population zealots cheering on a rapidly declining birth rate.

Also, and this is something that young people are just too dang dumb to understand but something that anybody who has been married for any number of decades knows beyond a shadow of a doubt: men don’t get subtle clues, and they’re not mind-readers. Maybe women should use their words. Or in the case of Aziz Ansari, their feet. Right out the front door.

  7. The #MeToo movement didn’t emasculate men, Geoffrey Knight’s plight pre-dates the movement (with reference to his Freshman T-shirt).

“Feminism” did it to him though, but more importantly, Feminism has made women r3tard3d.

  8. Nothing is funnier than libs claiming The Handmaids Tale represents Trumps America while at the same time celebrating the North Korea cheerleading squad.

According to the Associated Press, as reported by the Taipei Times, in 2002, a similar cheer squad was sent to South Korea for the Asian Games. North Korean cheer squads were also sent to South Korea for other events in 2003 and 2005.

While their pristine performance dazzled the crowd, 21 members of the 2005 cheer squad were reportedly sent to a prison camp for talking about life in South Korea.

The AP reported that a defector who had fled to China told South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo that the detained females violated a promise to not speak about anything they saw while out of the country.

Another defector said the cheer squad pledged that they would treat South Korea as “enemy territory” and would accept punishment if they broke any part of the promise.“

  9. Dana #6, that is correct – if something is so outrageous, offensive and downright dangerous what happened not only to walking out, but to kicking in the ####, eye poking, the closed fist and for that matter all this kickboxing and for many firearms training that many women have been undertaking.

It does not help that for my generation (lower bound of Gen. X/baby bust) of men on the prowl, felly became sort of the expected consolation prize (yes, you know we will likely not meet up again, but here) and not a milestone toward a healthy exclusive relationship.

Was this her place or his? Doesn’t really matter. He should have gotten out of bed and dressed himself, without saying a word. Then, if it was her place, he should have walked out, still without saying a word. If it was his place he should have gone to another room, and if she hadn’t gotten the hint after fifteen minutes, he should have called out, “Do you want me to call you a cab?”

As the “house guests,” a group of C-list celebrities trapped in a studio together, sat around to discuss illegal immigration and the Obama-era program known as DACA or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (as you do on a reality show), Omarosa also chimed in with her expert two cents.

“No, we’re not OK,” she said. “I’ve seen the plan. The round-up plan is getting more and more aggressive.”

Earlier in the show fellow contestant Ross Mathews said of Omarosa, “every time she opens her mouth I’m like is she going to drop a bomb?” And the answer, of course, is yes. It also might be a part of the former senior White House aide’s strategy. 52. “According to two sources familiar with the meetings, Comey told lawmakers that the FBI agents who interviewed Flynn did not believe that Flynn had lied to them, or that any inaccuracies in his answers were intentional. As a result, some of those in attendance came away with the impression that Flynn would not be charged with a crime pertaining to the Jan. 24 interview.
Nine months later, with Comey gone and special counsel Robert Mueller in charge of the Trump-Russia investigation, Flynn pleaded guilty to one count of making false statements to the FBI in that Jan. 24 questioning.

[I]t appears the FBI did not think Flynn had done anything wrong in the [calls to Russian FM Kislyak]. On Jan. 23, the Washington Post reported that the FBI had reviewed the Flynn-Kislyak calls and “has not found any evidence of wrongdoing or illicit ties to the Russian government.” (The calls had been intercepted by U.S. intelligence because the U.S. monitored the Russian ambassador’s communications — something which Flynn, a former chief of the Defense Intelligence Agency, surely knew.)

Still, Flynn’s conversation had the attention of the Obama Justice Department, and in particular of deputy attorney general Sally Yates, who reportedly believed Flynn might have violated the Logan Act, a 218 year-old law under which no one had ever been successfully prosecuted. (Two people were charged in the 19th century, but the cases were dropped.)

Byron York notes what immediately occurred to me– around this time, reporters friendly to Obama began talking up the LOGAN ACT and how it’s Totally a Serious Law You Guys.”

  69. O/T, but I’m hearing more and more GOP members of the House calling on the Senate to finish nuking the filibuster. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL), a member of the House Freedom Caucus, is insisting on Fox Business News:

There are only two ways to address the entitlement programs’ cost. One way is for Mitch McConnell and the Republican senators to get rid of the 60 vote rule that is not required in the Constitution — may not even be permitted by the Constitution. I think in a republic, in a democracy, majority rules, and wins. But that’s not the case in the United States Senate. So you’re not going to get any entitlement reform in the United States Senate until such time as you get the majority rule, because no Democrat can expect to vote for cutting entitlement programs and expect to win their Democrat primaries. They can win a general election, but not their primaries….

This is an accurate description of how the filibuster rule gives Senate Democrats the power to block any and all national legislation. It is otherwise a poor argument and makes Brooks look like a simpleton. (Maybe he is, I don’t know.) The filibuster and the cloture rule are absolutely not compelled by the Constitution, but it is equally as clear that they are constitutional, for Article I, Section 5 provides that “Each House may determine the Rules of its Proceedings.” That same provision also specifies that a majority of each house constitutes a quorum for doing business, but that’s the last that this part of the Constitution says about majority rule being required and binding in legislative proceedings. Elsewhere, for purposes of overriding presidential vetoes and for purposes of conviction in the Senate after impeachment by the House, other specific voting thresholds are prescribed. So Rep. Brooks is just flatly wrong in trying to oversell his argument against the filibuster. He’s arguing in a good cause, but with a confused and inaccurate predicate, and he’s missing all the best talking points. (Hint: calling the filibuster unconstitutional is not on the list.)

It will be interesting to see whether, in any contested GOP senatorial primaries, nuking the rest of the filibuster becomes a campaign issue on which candidates take opposing views. Gosh I hope so: There are still too many naive GOP senators unwilling to give the Dems some sort of supposed talking point about the Republican Party refusing to be bi-partisan. Well duh, as compared to what the Dems have been saying in every single national election since — what, 1800?
