Patterico's Pontifications

What I really want to write about is government debt — specifically, refuting the arguments that it is not a problem. But that’s an in-depth post that I don’t have time for this morning.

Meanwhile, I don’t care about the Big Stories of the Moment. Something something texts something something deep state.

Tony Perkins says Trump gets a mulligan on Stormy Daniels.

  7. Perkins gives heavenly pardons.

Love is God’s primary attribute and, redeemed and empowered by His love, our primary duty is to love God and love others. This is the central message of Jesus and the Bible. The world religions disagree on many things, but most agree that the Highest Ultimate is primarily loving, good, or blissful and that we are to treat others as we would want to be treated. Such notions are backed up by the phenomenology of religious experience, miracles, and our ethical intuitions.

But because Evangelicals refuse to accept this, they make the Bible into an idol and act in ways that are profoundly unloving.

For example, because of a handful of texts that condemn homosexuality, they treat LGBTQ people in ways that can only be described as hateful.

They mock them and condemn them. They compare their most intimate relationships to pedophiles, sex with animals, pollution, rape, and murder. They isolate them, suspect them, and treat them with revulsion (even those who are trying to follow their rules). They claim natural disasters, terrorist attacks, or AIDS are God’s judgment for our “wicked” acceptance them.

  9. These evangelical people are big on sin. That’s how they get their rocks off — half the time thinking about sin and the other half talking about it. So it’s easy for them to believe that the hooker’s story is true. They want to believe that the hooker’s story is true. It would shake their core beliefs to consider that it might not be true. Really.

  15. The FBI’s top agent on the Trump-Russia investigation sent a text message last year that one top Republican senator says suggests he saw no evidence of Trump campaign collusion.

The text message, which was sent by Peter Strzok, is “jaw-dropping,” Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said in a radio interview on Tuesday.

In an interview with WISN-Milwaukee radio host Jay Weber, Johnson read aloud a May 19, 2017 text that Strzok sent to Lisa Page, an FBI lawyer and his mistress.

Strzok wrote: “You and I both know the odds are nothing. If I thought it was likely, I’d be there no question. I hesitate in part because of my gut sense and concern that there’s no big there there.”

It will be an issue for Trump because the media has selective memory. We shall see if tax revenues increase according to the theory of the Laffer Curve.

Oh yeah! There’s that open mindedness and patriotism you leftists are known for. First respecting the flag, a symbol of our country which I personally fought for and for which many havedied, is to you “idolatry”. Then statues if great Americans you philosophically disagree with based on 2018 concepts becomes idolatry for “slavers” as if these guys did nothing else in their lives for their country.

Finally the usual ego of leftists that they are somehow better than everybody else with the condescending reference to again those same people who see life differently as narrow (code for Bigot), non-cerebral (stupid cause they ain’t woke) literalists (believe some things on faith like global warming believers do).

Such a compassionate, open minded and fairer person would be hard t imagine. No wonder people are running away from your narrow minded team as fast as they can. You keep insulting people into the Trump camp almost every time you open your mouth. Thanks!

The answer to all questions regarding the national debt and the effects that tax increases and tax cuts have on tax revenues can be found in “The Statistical Abstract of the United States.” If you can handles sports statistics, the Abstract will let you trace every tax increase and tax cut and see what actually happened. Every tax cut resulted in increased tax revenues while every tax increase led to a revenue loss. No exceptions! Yet with all this readily available information, most politicians and media types are still stating the opposite.

Obstructing justice by destroying evidence, or concealing evidence and pretending it’s unavailable, is an obvious felony, one Hillary Clinton is guilty of committing, and now one members in leadership positions at both DOJ and FBI are brazenly, even laughably, continuing to actively engage in to cover up even worse crimes.

They’re caught like rats entangled in the treasonous web of Obama Administration lies, crimes, and deceits magnified by an overarching arrogance and combined with the blind certainly of Hillary Clinton’s presidential victory come the elections.

Certain their crimes would go unrevealed in Hillary’s Administration (actually hands-on rats doing the dirty work expected to be rewarded with promotions and titles, while the two-faced corner office boys dreamed of cabinet level appointments and the plethora of fancy perks at tax payer expense) members of the anti-Trump cabal plunged headlong deeper and deeper into treasonous criminality.

Trump’s win in the GOP primaries shook the conspirators to the core but they were already up to their chinny chin chins in unforgivable crimes against democracy and couldn’t get out without becoming designated scapegoats for the remaining conspirators.

So, what did they do? Why, they doubled down, dusted off their ‘insurance policy’ back-up plan and accused Trump of conspiracy to subvert the election, which was exactly the crime Hillary’s cabal had been involved in since Trump started coming on strong in primary elections.

Now, the conspirators are being hoisted on the petard of their own criminality and they deserve public humiliation, hefty fines and substantial jail time. Justice requires no less.

The case involves a powerful Russian banker who may have given money to the NRA, which, in turn, spent at least $55 million on the 2016 elections. So, Gowdy pressed, “How was he able to accumulate information in Russia if he didn’t go?” Simpson claimed that Steele ran a “network of subsources or subcontractors” who traveled around Russia and gathered information for him.

But it turns out the primary subcontractor worked not for Steele but for Simpson at Washington-based Fusion GPS, and he contributed key material for the investigation of Trump underwritten by the Clinton campaign. His name is Edward Baumgartner, a British national who speaks fluent Russian and runs a p.r. shop out of London (and who spent 2016 tweeting his forceful opposition to Trump’s candidacy).

While Baumgartner was working on the dossier, he was also working for Simpson on another case to smear an anti-Putin whistleblower in an effort to help Putin-tied company Prevezon defend itself against US charges of money laundering.”

A BIG CAVE-IN BARS THEIR EXIT

Loyal Comrades [in the media] Working Like Beavers to Save Their Lives.

The Thrilling Story of a Miner Who Narrowly Escaped

WILKES-BARRE, PA. MAY 16—Twenty-eight men democratic lawmakers are entombed in given the Baltimore shaft, No. 4, at Ashley the next election, and there is little hope of their rescue. The mine party is an old one, and the workings are in more or less a dilapidated condition. This fact makes the work of rescue very difficult. The imprisonment of the unfortunate men is due to a big cave-in of the surface over the mine which occurred yesterday. The cave-in covers an area of one square mile, and is one of the most disastrous that ever occurred in the coal regions.

    It Came Without Warning
The crash came without any warning whatever. This is something unusual too, as generally there is a quaking and quivering of the earth before it settles. The first intimation of danger …

  98. File this thought away, Patterico, for when you write about public debt:

I think the people who don’t care about debt are (1) the utterly innumerate (without a basic knowledge of mathematics and arithmetic); (2) those who live entirely in the present with no conception of themselves or anyone else living in the future; and (3) those who have persuaded themselves not to care about the debt, with or without self-awareness thereof.

An astonishingly, dismayingly large number of people fall into categories (1) and (2). For the most part, they prefer to be in those categories. They almost always actively resist all efforts to nudge them out of either category (1) or (2) — which, by the way, aren’t exclusive, but rather, frequently overlap.

Regardless of their claimed views, legislators and executives-branch public officeholders alike, of both parties, are almost uniformly within category (3) almost all the time. (Note: this category isn’t mutually exclusive either!)

As Prof. Reynolds is fond of pointing out, government is where the biggest-scaled opportunities for graft are, regardless of whether the operators thereof claim to be fiscal progressives or fiscal conservatives. And this has been true for centuries. I just finished a decent history on the Plantagenet kings of England, whose fortunes and fates waxed and waned with their relative success in taxing Englishmen to fight for the royal families’ non-English lands in France, including financing heavy international debts from private lenders all over Europe. This ended up leading to a confrontation with the ever-more-taxed and pillaged barons, which in turn led to the Magna Carta and then to parliamentary government.

Can anyone doubt that multiply-bankrupted, junk-bond financed casino magnate Donald Trump is within category (3) — indeed, its most conspicuous current representative? (Yet that’s what Trumpkin commenters here will do when you write your post about public debt, I confidently predict.)

Between them, these three categories encompass a very large majority of Americans who can even grasp the concept of “public debt. To ever address the problem, we’ve got to move people around on this Venn diagram. And that’s a heavy lift, even when the POTUS bothers to pretend that he’s fiscally conservative and concerned about either spending or public debt.

So keep fighting the fight, and writing (thus teaching) the gospel.

  100. I find it hard to believe that angels have free will.

Well, we Jews say they don’t. Their only “will” is to do God’s Will. And the overwhelming majority exist only to do one specific thing, the task assigned to them by the Divine Will.

Satan is an angel, and so are the so-called “angels of destruction”, the type which the Psalms refer to in saying, He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.

But they do only what they are allowed to do by the Divine Will. The most extensive example afforded by the Bible of Satan doing God’s Will is of course the Book of Job.

Sometimes Satan is identified with the Angel of Death, sometimes just called the Adversary. And every person has their own unique Satan, normally called the Evil Influence, who are appointed by God to tempt and test us, thereby allowing us to exercise our Free Will. There’s also a Good Influence. Think of those cartoons with a little devil one one shoulder and a little angel on the other shoulder, each urging the person to sin/not sin.

Also, on reflection, the whole idea of an afterlife where everything is perfect for eternity doesn’t make a lot of sense to me either.

Well, the afterlife does not actually exist “after” death. It is outside of time and space altogether. Think of yourself as a point on a 2D map, suddenly lifted out and experiencing a 3D universe. [Insert reference here to Flatland.] The “afterlife”, whatever exactly it is, is analogous. And God, who exists both in and outside existence (and therefore both in and out of time) experiences it all as a single unified perception–which why Divine Foreknowledge and Divine Will can co-exist with complete freedom of the will on the part of us humans.

FBI Dir. Wray’s Chief of Staff, James Rybicki, just announced he was quitting the FBI.

Rybicki was one of the FBI officials who was supposed to testify before the House Intel Committee in the coming days.

Will be interesting to see if he’s still an FBI official when he testifies, or if he departs before. If he departs, he could assert his Fifth Amendment rights — something he would have a difficult time doing if he remained in place at the FBI.

The timing of this announcement following the leak about Wray yesterday, which gave him a bit of insulation as being “independent”, is interesting. Could be the first shoe to drop in terms of upper FBI getting shoved out the door.

If interfering with freedom of association is a problem it sounds like the remedy should be electing members of Congress at large.

If they want a fair map or a fair system for drawing a map, then let every candidate in the previous election, or a committee that would replace the candidate, propose a map for the entire state, the map accepted for entry into a lottery as long as it meets the minimum population equality criteria.

Give each candidate’s map a rank in proportion to their vote. You don’t have to consider them of equal weight but you can weight them more finely.

You can have, say, numbers that add up to 10,000. So each of the 18 districts would get about 555 numbers votes, divided among the candidates in proportion to their votes. A candidate who got 50% of the vote would get 278 numbers.

Order the numbers from 1 to 10,000. Like one map gets numbers1666 through 1943. And so on.

Then pick the winner according to a regular state lottery Pick 4 number or something similar.

The fact that the redistricting that winds is random would encourage people, to some extent to work together on a map, and if this was the system in the future, it would also encourage candidates to run even in hopeless races and the number of votes their candidate got would be important, at least in years that ended in a zero.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  150. Your reading comprehension is deteriorating, Tillie.

    Colonel Haiku (27c440)

  151. For Tillie… “No one would ever confuse elder-care providers with “the American pharmaceutical and medical-equipment industry.” It’s obvious that that title belongs to the cutting-edge firms that manufacture medicines and health-care devices.

Similarly, the vital core of the “solar-energy industry” is composed of highly innovative U.S.-based producers that manufacture these green-energy products. Trump’s tariffs aim at keeping the nation in the critical green-energy production game by enabling these businesses to compete against overseas counterparts that use government support to keep prices at rock-bottom levels and undersell rivals that need to generate revenue and profits without a crutch (a practice known as “dumping”).

Solar installers naturally don’t care where their panels come from. The less expensive their inputs, all else equal, the wider their profits, and the lower the prices they can charge customers for solar energy.

So it’s true that cheap imported panels would help speed up the use of such alternative power sources. But as the Trump tariffs recognized, the long-term national costs are far greater of allowing foreign governments to sink entire American green-energy manufacturing sectors.

First, such green-energy production deserves priority treatment because, as with industrial companies generally, manufacturers in the solar sector vastly exceed the productivity growth of service companies like installers.

Indeed, according to their figures, the manufacturers’ improvement in this measure of efficiency (and key to sustainable national prosperity) jumped by nearly 60% between 2012 and 2016 alone — a period when productivity in manufacturing overall, the long-time U.S. pacesetter, barely budged.

Further, as is also the case with much of American manufacturing, the solar producers that sought the tariffs are standout innovators, with Solar World SWVK, +22.67% holding more than 50 patents and Suniva more than 150.

Largely as a result, the manufacturers contend, every dollar of their new output generates fully two dollars of growth elsewhere in the American economy — an unusually high multiplier. The installers opposing the tariffs make no remotely comparable contributions.

Additionally, permitting the Chinese and others to dump solar panels would have signaled to other foreign government-subsidized industries that it’s open season on other key American manufacturing sectors — including in alternative energy.

The only conceivable outcome would be a surging presence in the U.S. economy of even more government-funded entities, which bring to bear the resources of entire national treasuries in their competition with U.S.-based producers that rely exclusively on private financing. How would this development promote the free-market system and norms crucial to both America’s historic economic success and its future prosperity?

Had Trump listened to the solar installers and coddled solar-panel dumping, Americans would have been limited to affixing imported solar equipment to U.S. homes and businesses, the nation would have been pushed further to the sidelines of the green-energy revolution, and government-supported foreign producers would have compromised further the nation’s free markets.”

    Colonel Haiku (27c440)

    Pinandpuller (84904f)

  209. Greenfield… read it all and weep for what they’ve done to this country:

“The hijacking of the DOJ wasn’t just about destroying policing and counterterrorism. Holder and Lynch became notorious for covering up Barack Obama’s and then Hillary Clinton’s scandals. Holder was held in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over documents in the Fast and Furious scandal. Lynch’s claim that her extended tarmac meeting with Bill Clinton during the investigation of his wife was a chat about their grandchildren took political cynicism to a new low. Lynch’s emails about the meeting were sent using the alias “Elizabeth Carlisle” in the most transparent administration in history.

But Obama’s DOJ didn’t just play defense. It also went after political opponents. Especially Trump.

We don’t know what, if any, tactics were deployed against the Romney campaign. That is one of the things that a comprehensive investigation of the Obama years should look into. The collapse of Romney’s ORCA application at a crucial moment may have helped throw the election to Obama. But we already know some of the measures that Obama Inc. took against the Trump campaign.

The Hillary campaign had funded the creation of the Steele dossier. The discredited document was injected into the DOJ and FBI through Fusion GPS, a secretive organization which bridged the gap between opposition research, the media and the government. The dossier was used to justify a FISA warrant for eavesdropping on Trump officials and then the Mueller investigation.

But the Steele dossier was only a product. Handling it required special interest groups within the DOJ and the FBI. We’re learning the names of some of those people. There was Bruce Ohr, the former associate deputy attorney general, whose wife had been hired by Fusion GPS to conduct anti-Trump research and who had contacted the author of the Steele dossier. There were Strzok and Page.

    And there were many others.

The FISA warrants, the NSA eavesdropping, the Clinton and Trump investigations and all the other abuses of Obama Inc. required numerous allies within the Department of Justice. Some of these allies might have spoken seriously or facetiously about operating within a secret society. But all of them did.

The secret society they were part of was the one created by Obama in his eight years in office.”

And if we don’t drain it, we’ll drown in it the way the Russians and the Chinese did.”

A high-ranking FBI official confirms a number of the missing 50,000 FBI text messages — as well as other text and email messages among FBI brass — reportedly discussed initiating physical harm to President Donald Trump.

The FBI official urged the U.S. Department of Homeland Security — which oversees the U.S. Secret Service — to launch an investigation of the Justice Department, the FBI and all text messages missing and otherwise that threatened the President.

That would be a reason to delete them.

The period of time the text messages are missing from are not really crucial for learning about the Russia investigation or the Hillary Clinton email whitewash.

But there might be more tahn one reason fros omeone to have gtten rid of these messages.

I heard a rumour you can shut the whole thing down for three days without anyone noticing a difference

    Next time will be longer.

What Schumer did now is make a shutdown more tolerable because they got CHIP re-authorized. It became clear to them that they really weren’t prepared for a prolonged shutdown. It would have really hurt people in soem states.

Senator Chuck Schumer has now withdrawn his offer of support for fuding for a wall (which White House Press Eecretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is now claiming was never made – it was probably made although some loopholes maybe were left)

    Rich Lowry writes:

    http://www.nationalreview.com/morning-jolt/455720/chuck-schumer-shutdown-wall-funding

Okay, so if the broader deal coimes back, then the offer for Democrfats’ support for a wall comes back, right.

    Right.

But what Schumer wants is that his opponents cannot bank it, and ask for new restrictions on
legal immigration to go with legalizing the Dreamers and others. He has to make tehm bnargainb over the walkl and border security again.

Now what may very well happen is that:

    1) There will be a government shutdown,

    2) The Senate will pass something about the Dreamers

    3) And the House will pass it, maybe after a second or third vote.

    4) Trump may then veto the bill (which will be sent to him before a continuing resolution is passed) saying he wants more, but he’s not aaginst legalizing the Dreamers and there is still time,

    5) Congress then will override his veto, (because until it does, the shutdown won’t end.

A possible compromise is a 2-year exstension of DACA status for all those now on it with n otyehr changes in law.

This will probably be offered by House Republicans in a bid to end the impasse.

  266. @274- It is sourced from “A high-ranking FBI official” that one assumes has seen the texts.

Yes, it is an assumption of what a second party knows/has seen, and so one can’t be blamed for taking it with a grain of salt. However, the FBI, having thrown up so much smoke by willing to look criminally incompetent, MuST be trying to hide some sort of even more damning fire.

Unless of course one still finds them credible enough that one actually believe these particular texts were lost due to a software update.

    Me, not so much

    TheBas (f00165)

  267. Also, this just in:

The Trump administration has pursued policies that have hewed remarkably close to the recommendations of a leading conservative think tank, the Heritage Foundation, which found in a new review that nearly two-thirds of its ideas had been carried out or embraced by the White House over the past year.

Not one to dwell on the details of governing, President Trump has shown a considerable degree of deference to groups within the conservative movement like Heritage, leading to a rightward shift in social, environmental, immigration and foreign policy.

The results, Heritage found in its review, exceeded even the first year of Ronald Reagan’s presidency, whose tenure has long been the conservative gold standard.

    TheBas (f00165)

  268. I’m curious if Trump supporters will believe it if the texts turn out to be angry/partisan talk but nothing more. Will that be taken as another sign of a cover up or that the fix against Trump is in?

I was thinking about how I would feel if we had President Cruz when this came to light (and I have no doubt that the bureaucrats in all the agencies would have been just as upset at the thought of President Cruz as they were at the thought of President Trump). My feeling would have been that Cruz had his work cut out for him to try to instill ethics, responsibility, and nonpartisanship in government agencies. I would hope that Cruz worked quickly to change the culture in DC through new leadership, training, oversight, transparency, and even criminal charges where warranted. I think Cruz would have realized this, too, and tried to address it. Trump just whines.

If Trump was your crazy Uncle Donald, your child’s school bus driver, your pharmacist, a licensed pilot, perhaps the captain of a U.S. Navy minesweeper– or the ship-of-state– you’d want him to be more thoroughly examined specifically for dementia based on the symptoms he displays given the lives and property at stake. Or you can ignore what you keep seeing with your own eyes.

More about the Hawaiian missile alert:

    http://www.newser.com/story/254769/worker-behind-alert-thought-hawaii-missile-threat-was-real.html

…The drill kicked off during a shift change at 8:05am. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency’s (HI-EMA) midnight shift supervisor pretended to be US Pacific command and called day-shift warning officers and played a recording that correctly said “EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE”—and, incorrectly, “THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”

Those warning officers correctly interpreted it as a drill, but the warning officer at the alert origination terminal did not….

    Lesson:

You shouldn’t have a recording that says:

    “THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”

…when in fact it is a drill.
