False Report of Incoming Ballistic Missile Panicks Hawaii

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 2:09 pm

I wish I had more time to do a thorough post on this, but I wanted to throw something up, as I think it’s important. People in Hawaii today got a false report of an incoming ballistic missile on their phones:

Screen Shot 2018-01-13 at 2.06.41 PM

Our commenter shipwreckedcrew wrote a couple of comments, like this:

So, how is everyone’s day going?

Not much happening where I live.

“Inbound ballistic missle heading for Hawaii. THIS IS NOT A DRILL”.

8:07 am on my iPhone.

Other than that, kids are enjoying their pancakes.

And this:

With an hour to decompress — here’s what sucks.

Four kids at home and one off at soccer practice.

And the stunning realization there’s not a f’ing thing you can really do about it.

The 16 year old calls and says “What should I do?”

What do you tell him?

Reports are that this warning was the result of someone pushing the wrong button. Someone on Twitter observed:

You can and should blame the person who pushed the wrong button, but that was probably inevitable when you had a system that allowed it.

Thank God nobody overreacted. History has examples of mistaken warnings bringing us closer to the brink of nuclear war than you’d like to think. I hope the people of Hawaii recover from the psychic shock of this horrible scare.

I remember the gnashing of teeth after 9/11 as well as regrets over the failure of all to connect the dots. We don’t seem to learn from mistakes.

That said, however: This has now been a very large-scale drill. Since it wasn’t intended, special arrangements weren’t made to assess it, but with whatever information is available, it should be thoroughly assessed.

If it ends up bringing serious, grown-up thinking on a national basis about the risks of a Nork nuke-topped ICBM to the U.S. and its vital interests and allies, that could be useful. If it is exploited as best as possible after the fact to learn whatever lessons such a large scale and realistic drill might have taught, that would be useful too, especially for Hawaiians.

After escaping a Boer POW camp, young Winston Churchill wrote: “Nothing in life is so exhilarating as to be shot at without result.” But he was speaking of surviving a real attack, and he was very young and adventurous and romantic, and I’m not sure the saying scales up.

President Trump starts the next round by taunting Kim Jong Un with his own nuclear threats. And lastly, someone at Hawaii’s defense command pushes the wrong button, terrifying the island residents. A perfect storm of incompetence.

Chelsea Manning, formerly Bradley Manning who in 2013 was convicted of the biggest leak of classified documents in U.S. history, has filed to challenge Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) for his Senate seat, the Washington Post reported.

Manning, who became transgender during the six years he was incarcerated, had his 35-year prison sentence commuted by President Barack Obama before he left office.

The creature formerly known as Bradley (which started him off as gay) and who decided to “transgender” when we the taxpayer could be billed for the removethedictomy is now going for the democrat gold. Imagine an Oprah/Chelsea slate in 2020.

  103. Hill sources tell us that a House Democratic takeover is now likely.
One strategist close to Republican leaders believes that a loss of the House is “baked in,” and said top Republicans don’t see a way to avoid it.
It would take a flip of 24 seats for Dems to take over. The average loss for the president’s party in his first midterm is about 32 seats, and we’re hearing forecasts of 40+ losses.
You can’t predict outcomes this far out, but these hard facts scare the hell out of Republicans:

Eight House GOP chairs have retired: You don’t climb to the top of power in Congress and leave unless you feel confident your reign will soon end. (Another factor: Chairmanships are term-limited from a Gingrich-era reform.)
Record retirements for GOP: Already, 29 GOP seats are open, a pace far exceeding the past two elections that saw power change hands.
Democrats outperformed their norms in turnout, and in total votes, in all seven 2017 elections. This is a clear indicator of energy.
Record number of Democratic women voting and considering running for office. This, more than anything, is a reaction to Trump and the #MeToo movement.
In polls, voters prefer Democrats for Congress by a 10-point margin. There is no way to spin this: +10 is terrible in a 50/50 nation.

  128. 130.Dear Rev.Hoagie.

You say that “the first thing a dope does when he’s wrong is start calling names.”

I would ask that you reread that sentence more thoughtfully. (Clue: Its a bit self-defeating.)
    noel (b4d580)

It’s not self defeating in the least. It’s what a dope does. Especially a left wing dope. It’s how they think. They don’t have disagreements with opponents, they have arguments with enemies. That’s why we can’t have any civil discourse in this country any more. Oddly, when guys on the right start talking sh!t the leftists go crazy. They’ve been calling us names since I came back from Nam but if I say something it’s outrageous.

The left calls everybody names to dehumanize their opponents. If all I am to you, noel is a deplorable, a racist, a Nazi then treating me like a human is no longer necessary. So when it comes time to send me to a gulag or a firing squad it’s no big deal. All leftist governments have and continue to do it. It’s what the Nazi’s did to the Jews and others and the Soviets did to the kulaks and millions of others. The leftists here are no different.

    Rev.Hoagie (6bbda7)

  129. Rev.Hoagie says, “The left calls everybody names to dehumanize their opponents.”

Lets check… You have used “dope, idiot, creatures, minions, and Hussein the Marvelous” just in the last few comments. I, contrary to your false accusation, have not called you any names.

That would put you far to the “left” of me, I guess.

  132. Sorry Rev.Hoagie. I missed “left wing dope”. Which, last I checked, is calling me a name. And has the added benefit of being a lie. Reverend.

I apologize for the personal nature of this comment but I am concerned about you. Feel free to disregard this comment if you believe it is inappropriate.

You are much more moody and angry than you used to be. Maybe it’s not the case or due to something else, but I think it could also be related to your serious, difficult health problems. If you think this is possible, please discuss it with your wife and/or doctors.

  150. 155… they’d threatened to for years, Steve, and finally started selling new Alfa product here in late 2014, per my recollection. I’ve looked at/test driven the 4C… it is quite a visceral experience, but it is too low and doesn’t have enough headroom for me… I’d have to purchase the targa and would never be able to have the roof on the car when driving.

Thanks for the free psychoanalysis, DRJ but I’m neither angry nor moody. I just get peeved when somebody calls me a bigot and I respond then he says I started calling him names.

Whether noel likes it or not I happen to believe if a person wants to cut off his legs or remove his arms he has a mental problem. I also believe if someone wants to cut his nuts and balls off he too has a mental problem. I also believe that if society as a whole can’t speak the factual truth which is Bradley Manning is not a female we have a real problem as a culture. Manning is a self mutilating person with deep psychological problems who is demanding that I, and we, refer to him as something he is not. If you do you’re as crazy a he.

If he can “identify” as a woman and therefore be one then why can’t he “identify” as a senator and save all the trouble and money of running?

    Rev.Hoagie (6bbda7)

  155. Chris Lee, the east Oahu representative, recalled going to the mall after the fiasco and described a sort of surreal atmosphere in which everybody was calm and friendly. “It was like Christmas morning and everybody got a car—there was an amazing sense of camaraderie,” he said. He noticed myriad strangers greeting one another, for example, exchanging stories about their morning and offering each other their spot in line. “The little things that people worry about in day-to-day life and get frustrated with,” he said, “completely evaporated.”

  157. Around 8:05 a.m., the Hawaii emergency employee initiated the internal test, according to a timeline released by the state. From a drop-down menu on a computer program, he saw two options: “Test missile alert” and “Missile alert.” He was supposed to choose the former; as much of the world now knows, he chose the latter, an initiation of a real-life missile alert.
