DEVASTATING PROOF OF MEDIA BIAS: New York Times Airbrushes Away Democrat’s Embarrassing False Claim Without a Trace

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:30 pm

Jay Caruso noted that Senator Claire McCaskill had claimed early today never to have met with a Russian ambassador:

Then undeniable documentary and photographic evidence emerged that she had.

I bet she wishes she could just airbrush that initial tweet from history — like it never happened.

Kinda like the New York Times did today with her claim.

They reported it — and then, when they figured out it was wrong, they simply vanished it. Whoosh. Presto-change-o! It was never there. Did you hear me? It was never there.

Earlier today, The Times — and yes, I will name the reporters; they are Eric Lichtblau, Michael D. Shear, and Charlie Savage — published an article titled Democrats Call for Sessions to Recuse Himself From Russia Inquiry. (It now reads Jeff Sessions Recuses Himself from Russia Inquiry.) As the day went on, The Times revised the article in various ways, using the same URL, never noting their edits.

But my favorite edit came to the following paragraph, which was in the original story:

But Democrats were unassuaged. In a statement, Mr. Franken called Mr. Sessions’s testimony “at best misleading,” noting, “It’s clearer than ever now that the attorney general cannot, in good faith, oversee an investigation at the Department of Justice and the F.B.I. of the Trump-Russia connection, and he must recuse himself immediately.”

Senator Claire McCaskill, Democrat of Missouri, cast doubt on Mr. Sessions’s explanation that he had met with the Russian ambassador because of his duties as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, saying that was beyond the panel’s jurisdiction.

“I’ve been on the Armed Services Com for 10 years,” she wrote on Twitter on Thursday. “No call or meeting w/Russian ambassador. Ever. Ambassadors call members of Foreign Rel Com.”

And Representative Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland, the ranking Democrat on the Oversight Committee, went further, calling for Mr. Sessions to resign because he let a “demonstrably false” statement stand for weeks without correcting the public record.

Then, the Internet began presenting proof that she was wrong, and the language in bold . . . disappeared.

You can track the changes at the site NewsDiffs.org. At 4:34 p.m. Eastern, the story still contained the paragraph above. But at 5:18 p.m. Eastern, New York Times axed the language in bold. Review the changes here. Here is a screenshot from NewsDiffs.org that shows the change made at 5:18 p.m.:

newsdiffs-sessions

It’s actually quite newsworthy that a politician who criticizes Jeff Sessions for saying he didn’t meet with the Russian ambassador when he had . . . herself said she didn’t meet with the Russian ambassador when she had. If the New York Times were interested in simply reporting newsworthy material, they would have left in McCaskill’s claim, and reported that she was wrong.

I’m going to say that again, because it’s important. If the New York Times were interested in simply reporting newsworthy material, they would have left in McCaskill’s claim, and reported that she was wrong.

But, you see, they’re not interested in simply reporting newsworthy material. They have an agenda. This didn’t fit their agenda. So they disappeared it. Without a trace. Without a hint that it had ever been there.

Except, that is, at NewsDiffs.org (and on the Twitter timeline of the Federalist’s Sean Davis, who first caught this).

If you want to understand why Americans are furious at the news media, this is Exhibit A. The newspaper of record deliberately covered up a newsworthy story that we can prove they knew about, just because it was inconvenient for the leftist, anti-Trump agenda they are pushing.

You want to know why we don’t trust you, media? This is why. Right here. This is why.

  8. Claire McCaskill’s tweet is still there on Twitter, and she defends it. She now says she never met one on one, just herself, but there were many Senators there, and the issue concerned international adoptions. (I think Putin had put a freeze on adoptions from Russia in retaliation for some sanctions.)

  12. The New York Tims, by the way, changed the format of their editorial and news index pages today. They moved the masthead from the editorial page, (3td page from last of the first section) where it had been split into 2 pieces, to page A2, which they expanded into page A3, and they will include from now a mini-crossword puzzle, with answers the next day.

The Upshot, a recent innovation, which was on page A3, and was most of the time kind of interesting, and went into statistics and polls (that was where they printed the ranking a la New York magazine, of 20 matters related to Trump’s presdency that had filled a lot of newsprint) now seems to be gone.

The main innovation of the ditorial and op-ed page is they have eliminated anumber of straught lines separating matterial, which I don’t think is good, and they narrowed the letters column. Evidently they want more space for editorials and Op-eds. They will sometimes print an op-ed columnist now, theysay, ohe editorial page. I don’t they added more space. They just have morw white space.

The New York Times did put the MCClaskill tweet in another story, in parenthesis:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/02/us/politics/pelosi-schumer-ryan-sessions.html

Mr. Schumer sought to distinguish between Mr. Sessions’s meeting with the Russian ambassador, Sergey I. Kislyak, which he called appropriate, and the “very inappropriate” step of misleading Congress. (One Democrat, Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri, invited criticism on Thursday for saying that she had never held a call or meeting with the Russian ambassador, despite previously describing two such conversations on Twitter. She blamed Twitter’s character limit for the confusion.)

    The Twitter character limit!?

I think her first explanation was better. She was thinking only of one-on-one meetings – this was a meeting with a delegation of Senators.

Maybe she means that the Twitter character limit affected her tweet in 2013 – and caused her to leave out the fact that oher Senators would be there, too, and made it sound like she was meeting the Russian Ambassador alone. (There might have been other tweets that fully explained this, because I don’t think it would have been retrieved by search now)

  58. 32. The New York Times did run a story noting McCaskill’s error

    Patterico (115b1f) — 3/3/2017 @ 7:27 am

    Sure, a brief AP piece.

These Ap stories don’t appear (usually) in the printed paper, but they do get retrieved by he New York Times search engine or by Google.

But why wasn’t it worth leaving the accusation and rebuttal in the story about Sessions?

    We all know why.

It was wrong. But they did include that (on parenthesis) in another story, entitled:

Sticking With Trump, Republicans Resist Call for Broader Russian Inquiry

    …which I quoted in #36.

Now maybe you had something to do with them making sure to get included somewhere. You and maybe the whole controversy.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/02/us/politics/pelosi-schumer-ryan-sessions.html

But what we do see here is that if a claim is refuted too quickly the claim may disappear. And that’s actually not good. Now Clarre McCaskill claims her meeting was different, because it was a delegation of Senators, and the 140-character Twitter limit made her 2013 tweet misleading and made it look like she was meeeting alone.

  60. Rush Limbaugh said Obama met with the Russia Ambassador (about) twenty times – and well that’s what Ambassador’s do, they are basically lobbyists. The State Department helped set up that meeting with all the ambassadors at the Republican National Convention (I think he said.) Also, Ambassador Kislyak was at Trump’s inofficial State of the Union speech on Tuesday – sitting with the Democrats. Schumer has met him.

He says this is made to look ominous because there’s about four lies circulating – Trump loves Putin; Putin loves Trump; they worked togerher; Trump has business dealings with Russia; Russia caused Hillary to lose the election…

He was actually pretty aggressive, but he also was strategic about it. He knew when the right moment to press 100% was. He knew when to just look the media in the eyes and call them out, because at those moments he was reaching the American people somewhat directly. Trump has also done a great job of this kind of thing, though I hate to admit it because I do not want to compare a great man to Trump.

I think the media bias dynamic is because it’s extremely fashionable, even more than in the BDS era, to bash a guy like Trump. But the media actually has every reason to sober up its coverage. Instead of editoralizing everything, instead of tilting the scales, the media could restore its credibility a lot by just being fair, and unalarmist. Trump’s going to take care of his own poor reputation. We all know that.

But the problem is, the NYT, CNN, WAPO, they lose eyeballs if they aren’t freaking out. They have to be extreme because that’s what consumers of news want. They need headlines, they need to be linked, they need to be on twitter, and they need to be relevant in the next ten seconds, with no thought to their relevance in the next ten years.

It serves to polarize Trump’s supporters and critics. There is a niche wide open for journalism, real objective journalism.

    Dustin (ba94b2)

  77. Exhibit A should have been noticed by you over a decade ago, Patterico, when the NYT ran a disgusting piece by Judith Miller that helped deceive us into the war with Iraq.

Not all news organizations are the same. Highlighting this and saying the media is flawed is analogous to tasting anchovies (or anything you detest) and proclaiming you have DEVASTATING PROOF that all food tastes bad.

By the way, science is not all the same either, since we’re on that topic. There is a continuum of certainty, depending on the branch of science. Physics is more or less certain, but Theoretical Physics, not so much. The scientific method relies on others to duplicate results. One study is basically meaningless. It has to be duplicated numerous times, by numerous researchers, to be considered a fact. Can they go wrong sometimes? Sure, it is after all a human endeavor.

Similarly, independent verification among other news organizations helps. If I see a story, I try to find it on more than one site before thinking it’s probably true. The best news organization independently verify their stories rather than rely on any other news organization.

    That’s not enough.

I heard from more than one place that when Sessions recused himself the next in line was an Obama holdover. The New York Times said it was the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, whom Trump had named as Acting attorney general when Sally Yates was asked to resign, and I think the New York Times is right and everybody else is wrong.

I can only imagine the freak out if, a couple months into Obama’s first term, a bunch of Bush fans in and out of the government decided to start calling themselves a shadow cabinet.

Everyone is taking a bite of the ‘I don’t like my president’ sandwich, if you go back from W to Obama to Trump. If you don’t like peaceful transitions of power, you don’t really belong in our country.

This is not the person with an ability to spoof telephone numbers and disguise his voice who made the other 75 or so bomb threats.

    This just in:

    http://thehill.com/policy/technology/322261-fcc-grants-emergency-waiver-to-combat-jewish-center-bomb-threats

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced Friday it had issued an emergency waiver to allow law enforcement to temporarily access caller-ID information for those making anonymous threats against Jewish Community Centers (JCCs) across the country.

But if the caller ID is spoofed I don’t know how much that’s going to help.

“Now, new information has come out that throws cold water all over their phony “RussiaGate” scandal.

It turns out the senator spoke to the Russian ambassador in one of the allegedly scandalous “meetings” on the invitation of the Obama administration.

Hans A. von Spakovsky of reports (emphasis added):

So what are the two meetings that Sessions had? The first came at a conference on “Global Partners in Diplomacy,” where Sessions was the keynote speaker. Sponsored by the U.S. State Department, The Heritage Foundation, and several other organizations, it was held in Cleveland during the Republican National Convention.
The conference was an educational program for ambassadors invited by the Obama State Department to observe the convention. The Obama State Department handled all of the coordination with ambassadors and their staff, of which there were about 100 at the conference.

Apparently, after Sessions finished speaking, a small group of ambassadors—including the Russian ambassador—approached the senator as he left the stage and thanked him for his remarks. That’s the first “meeting.” And it’s hardly an occasion—much less a venue—in when a conspiracy to “interfere” with the November election could be hatched.”

“As the Russians gradually assumed control of Uranium One in three separate transactions from 2009 to 2013, Canadian records show, a flow of cash made its way to the Clinton Foundation. Uranium One’s chairman used his family foundation to make four donations totaling $2.35 million. Those contributions were not publicly disclosed by the Clintons, despite an agreement Mrs. Clinton had struck with the Obama White House to publicly identify all donors.

And shortly after the Russians announced their intention to acquire a majority stake in Uranium One, Mr. Clinton received $500,000 for a Moscow speech from a Russian investment bank with links to the Kremlin that was promoting Uranium One stock.

At the time, both Rosatom and the United States government made promises intended to ease concerns about ceding control of the company’s assets to the Russians. Those promises have been repeatedly broken, records show.” – NYTimes. – https://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/24/us/cash-flowed-to-clinton-foundation-as-russians-pressed-for-control-of-uranium-company.html?_r=0

About an hour goes by and the dad goes upstairs. “Son, did you talk to God?” The boy says,”I sure did, dad!” “So what did he say?” asked the dad.

Sessions was apparently acting as his own client because a smart lawyer would have told him to issue the statement, end there, not do a presser and to stop talking on the TeeVee about his keen recollections of names, events and attendees when he’s feigning poor recall about discussions w/a big, fat Russian ambassador.

  126. @134. Depends on the medium. The Beast needs fed.

TV suits have an agenda– ratings, profits and ROI for stockholders… but the on air talent is just that– hired news readers. Very few are shoe-leather journalists. And of late, they’re depending on print journalists to fill their teleprompters to feed The Beast. Websites always have agendas and print usually does thanks to their editorial board and/or publisher/owner. But they all have one common enemy: time. The loss of time to digest and assimilate information today is not healthy. You hear the complaints in the grocery store and in media. ‘Exhausted’ already… too much information with too little time to digest it. So increasingly it all becomes white noise… and people just turn away– or tune it out. It’s the slow death of outrage.

Related: ‘A NEW LOW!’ Donald Trump claims Barack Obama ‘had his wires tapped in Trump Tower before US election win.’

    Plus, from Andy McCarthy:

Instead, the Obama Justice Department decided to pursue the matter as a national-security investigation under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). In June, it sought the FISA court’s permission to conduct surveillance on a number of Trump associates — and perhaps even Trump himself. It has been reported that Trump was “named” in the application, but it is not publicly known whether he (a) was named as a proposed wiretap target, or (b) was just mentioned in passing in the application.

The FISA court found the application so weak that it said now — which it never does — and the Obama Administration came back with a narrower one, which may or may not have mentioned Trump specifically, which was granted, shortly before the election.”
