Source: Reince Priebus to Be Chief of Staff, Official Announcement Coming; UPDATE: Confirmed

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 1:19 pm

It’s a positive sign that it’s not Steve Bannon.

More if and when it’s official.

UPDATE: New York Times:

President-elect Donald J. Trump on Sunday chose Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee and a loyal campaign adviser, to be his White House chief of staff, turning to a Washington insider whose friendship with the House speaker, Paul D. Ryan, could help secure early legislative victories.

In selecting Mr. Priebus, the president-elect passed over Stephen K. Bannon, the right-wing media mogul who oversaw his presidential campaign. If Mr. Trump had appointed Mr. Bannon, a fierce critic of the Republican establishment, it would have demonstrated a continued disdain for a party that Mr. Trump fought throughout his campaign.

Mr. Trump’s choice is certain to anger some of his most conservative supporters, many of whom expect him to battle the Washington establishment over issues like taxes, immigration, trade, health care and the environment. They view Mr. Priebus as a deal maker who will be too eager to push the new president toward compromise.

In a statement Sunday afternoon, the transition team said Mr. Bannon would serve as the chief strategist and senior counselor in the White House. It emphasized that the two men would work “as equal partners to transform the federal government.”

So there you have it.

  22. but at least reince didn’t go to harvard

maybe i can work with this after the disappointment fades a bit

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  23. I think that’s good. If he had appointed a bunch of zealots, he would end up like Obama–short term success, long term disaster. Obama destroyed his party to pass Obamacare, and his radical chic persona appeals to about 10% of the electorate paved the way for Bernie and Trump.

    Patricia (5fc097)

  24. the much younger Mr. Priebus, 44, is regarded for his low profile and humility

    no he’s not

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  25. I agree with this appointment. It was explained yesterday that the person has to know all the levers in the Washington machine to succeed at this job. And it is a thankless task not many would be good at. But an important one.

    jd2 (47d6c6)

  26. Wow, happyfoot sure is an unhappy camper today!

  27. I think Bannon should have become WH Spokesman or Press Secretary or whatever it is that you’reJoshingmeyoucan’tbe Earnest is now.

It would at least be entertaining.

So now we have the Head Alligator (a term picked up on the cable news) as chief engineer of the Swamp Drainage project, counterbalanced by the Troll in Chief, with none knowing which way Dear Leader actually tends. I expect much infighting and enough backstabbing to make a Byzantine courtier’s head spin.

    Kishnevi (d7d2b1)

  28. @5. Her hame was floated. But it’s a good bet she’s on a list in the mix someplace. He runs a business. She ran one- albeit into the ground. But the skill set and experience makes good ground for communication and working together. She’ll probably get offered a spot someplace– and placate angry feminists as a sidecar.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  29. yes yes i’m putting myself in timeout on this topic

    but i am very disappointed

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  30. Obama had 5 chiefs of staff in his 8 years, and they were largely DC establishment guys (like Priebus, only from the DNC side) who didn’t seem to seem to have that much influence over Obama’s policies and decisions.

But Obama only had 4 senior advisers and these are the people that we’ve learned that influenced Obama’s policy decisions: David Plouffe, David Axelrod, Valerie Jarrett, and Daniel Pfeiffer. This is Bannon’s role.

    DRJ (15874d)

  31. That should make happyfeet happy. Me, not so much.

    DRJ (15874d)

  32. This is one of the reasons I was not #NeverTrump: Trump doesn’t have any people and is going to need the rest of the GOP to staff the government. Hillary had plenty of people and they’d stay in until the Last Judgment.

I don’t think this is a bad thing, but I can see some of the #MAGA faction being a little disappointed. Leaving these kinds of positions completely empty, and then seeing what fails to break, and then eliminating those positions six months later would have been a very bold libertarian move, but Trump is pretty far from a libertarian.

A lot of people were hoping for a GOP civil war, but it’s not happening. The mutual amnesty is underway. Let the Left form the circular firing squads for once.

    Gabriel Hanna (4f5ff1)

  33. I see Bannon and Roger Stone and maybe Corey Lewandowski as Trump’s go-to advisers.

    DRJ (15874d)

  34. Trump is saving his battles and bullets for conservatives.

    DRJ (15874d)

  35. “Draining the swamp” referred to cleaning up pay for play corruption.

Anybody accuse Priebus of being on the take? So he wouldn’t be the head alligator.

He’s more an arboreal creature swinging branch to branch in the mangrove canopy.

    papertiger (c8116c)

  36. yes yes all up in the mangrove

    that’s where you’ll find rincella

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  37. Look happyfeet dammit. You knew shit like this would happen. He just got elected. I who was no fan in anyway am willing, even happy to let him surprise me. I think there’s a better than 50/50 shot. I did not think that two weeks ago.

Relax. This is gonna be like building an office building. Look at the final result.

Just don’t fuck up the court stuff Trump. That would piss me off.

    Donald (2c90e9)

  38. This is a smart move. Trump is going to give the GOP no excuses this time.

    Think about it.

    LBascom (d82ccd)

  39. yes yes it’s very shrewd

    i see that now

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  40. Bannon and Priebus will be “equal partners”

So, the man who claims that Breitbart provides the alt-right a platform and th head of the RNC will be equal in power and position.

    Dana (d17a61)

  41. The RNC kept its side of the bargain wrt GOTV efforts. Priebus is a solid pick for the first year. I’m curious as to the Congressional liaisons because Priebus is going to have to help them out when Congress asserts its actual functions.

Trump should smooth any feathers ruffled by the appointment by asking for the resignations of all US Attorneys be submitted prior to January 20.

    Rick Ballard (bca473)

  42. We still don’t know why Lewandowski quit CNN?…

    Dana (d17a61)

  43. exactly the only way Mr. Trump could keep Mr. Bannon was to go to adopt-a-pet and get a fancy reince poodle for balance

    Mr. Trump is so smart

    i get it now

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  44. cnn LOL

    are they still a thing

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  45. This was a good choice for DJT. He had to have a significant GOP insider whom he could trust implicitly as CoS. The only other plausible person would have been Conway.

The biggest key will be how DJT chooses to deploy Pence. If he unleashes him to run his legislative program in Congress, it would be pretty great. Reince would not win any internal showdowns with Pence.

Another enormous consideration is how to ferret out the many saboteur flag officers and Chiefs in the Pentagon, and the similar cadre at State. Where is a Rumsfeld to be found?

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  46. By the way, has anyone else noticed that neither Obama or Hillary have said a word to condemn all the riots over the election?

I guess the MSM isn’t QUITE ready for honest journalism yet…

    LBascom (d82ccd)

  47. This looks like a good choice. Priebus can work with personalities, and Lord knows that Chief of Staff has to be someone who can herd cats.
Also, Priebus is friends with Paul Ryan, and could become a useful conduit to the Speaker.
Chief of Staff is not a position for a firebrand such as Bannon. (See “Don Regan” as a past example.)
Chief of Staff is also definitely NOT a position where one “drains the swamp.” It’s a position requiring management, organization, and communication.

  50. I think Priebus is sharp enough to avoid personal direct contact with Ryan for a few months. The Congressional liaisons should be the ones carrying the news back to Trump, Priebus should then pick the Schoolhouse Rock video which best explains what happened in order to help the President understand why he won’t be getting what he wants.

  70. I’d like to caution conservatives that there is a reason the country has been constantly ratcheted left for decades. They have a bad habit of rejecting the good for lack of being perfect. If they don’t get everything all at once, they will take nothing instead. It would be nice for a change if Republicans would focus on the positive and encourage more of it instead of obsessing on what they lack at the moment and tearing each other up over that. We are very easily distracted by finding fault and fighting each other because of it, instead of building ourselves up on the positive.

I suggest we all relax, let the man pick his team, and see where things go, putting on a unified front and stress the good things happening. Then maybe, just maybe, we can start to persuade more people we aren’t the party of fault finding curmudgeons constantly unhappy with everything.

I’m not saying be pollyannish, just that if we want to come together as a unified nation again, confident, good natured optimism will probably work better than being hyper critical all the time, especially to our own side.

    Just a thought…

    LBascom (d82ccd)

  71. That’s a fascinating psychological analysis of conservatives, LBascom. So conservatives are rigid, easily distracted, bad-tempered, hypercritical, unhappy fault-finding curmudgeons, and pessimists. Did I miss anything? How about annoying and judgmental?

    DRJ (15874d)

  72. This is the same road I’ve seen our side trot down before. Senator Larry Craig hounded out of office just in time to had the democrats the thinest majority to shove Obamacare through.

We have the winning hand now. The only way we lose is if we start shooting ourselves in the foot.

The whole NeverTrumper vs TrumperCuzJust*NO*ToHillary after Trump became the nominee within the conservative side just didn’t make sense to me … we dodged a *big* bullet on Tuesday …

I have to agree that good-natured optimism is what we need at this moment, ready to trust-yet-verify while President-Elect Trump is setting up his line-up for his Cabinet and while the incoming Congresscritters get ready to approve (or not) … once the policies start to be written down as official, *then* we have something upon which to base our responses …

The worst thing we can do is to allow ourselves to actually *believe* what the major media try to feed us ! When major media tries to divide Republicans and conservatives, we should *know* better than to allow them to succeed !
