Grubhub CEO: Support Trump? Then Resign [Update: the Walk-back Begins]

Filed under: General — JVW @ 1:57 pm

[guest post by JVW]

Fox news reports, you decide (or whatever):

The CEO of Grubhub, an online food delivery service, sent a company wide email Wednesday suggesting employees who agree with President-elect Donald Trump’s behaviors and his campaign rhetoric should resign.

“If you do not agree with this statement then please reply to this email with your resignation because you have no place here,” wrote Matt Maloney, Co-Founder of Grubhub. “We do not tolerate hateful attitudes on our team.”

Maloney, a Hillary Clinton supporter, sent the email Wednesday afternoon with the subject line, “So…that happened…what’s next?” He made it clear in the email statement that he is personally stunned and deeply concerned with the results of Tuesday’s election.

“I absolutely reject the nationalist, anti-immigrant and hateful politics of Donald Trump and will work to shield our community from this movement as best as I can,” Maloney wrote about Trump’s supporters.

Grubhub is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska — Nah! Just kidding! Of course its offices are in New York and Chicago. It is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange and last year reported $361 million in revenue. For what it’s worth, Grubhub’s stock price fell four percent today despite the overall market being up one percent and hitting an all-time high.

There is no word on whether or not the very high-strung Mr. Maloney believes that choosing to expose company secrets through gross negligence or then lying about it when confronted are acceptable values at Grubhub.

[Update:] Maloney is now tentatively starting to walk-back his email. The Grubhub PR people and lawyers must have flipped out. At I mentioned in a comment below, amazon has just rolled-out a dining delivery service so Grubhub now has a very powerful competitor to deal with. This was a horrible time to piss off a good segment of the market.

[Update II] – Maloney deleted the original Tweet. My bad for not getting a screen-shot first, although I’m sure someone on the internet will come up with one. Grubhub has released a statement from Maloney via the corporate channels lamenting that his message had been “misconstrued,” with no explanation why his earlier Tweet (which was a link to the Fox article mentioned above) had been deleted.

  1. Ever noticed how some of Hillary’s male supporters tend to be a special kind of delicate? And I don’t mean that in terms of their sexuality, just their weird propensity to be hyper-sensitive and fixated on emotion and feelings.

  2. I wonder what would happen if one of the Koch brothers sent out an email that said “if you support Hillary Clinton, please respond to this email with your resignation.” I’m sure the media would give them a pass, right?

  3. I would never use GrubHub, and I think their advertising has been atrocious. But now I have another reason to forego their services.

  4. Grubhub is dead to me now. Good luck to them.

  5. i started using eat24 (yelp) instead of grubhub awhile ago

grubhub was too cutesy cutesy and they don’t do a good job curating their selection of restaurants – they let me order from a closed restaurant once and then never texted about the problem – I found an email later –

i was so hungry and they completely dropped the ball

  6. Had I worked there, I would have forwarded the email to a attorney who specialized in wrongful discharge. Then I would have replied to Maloney as follows:

Dear Mr. Maloney: I voted for Trump. I refuse to resign, because I have done nothing wrong. If you fire me, I will sue you and this company for everything it’s worth. Have a pleasant day.

    Chuck Bartowski (bc1c71)

  7. Stuff like this is why Tuesday happened. And if the parties were flipped, media and Twitter would be all over it and boycott the place until it grovelled.

They are facing new competition from amazon’s dining delivery service, so this negative PR comes at a pretty bad time for them.

  9. The Left Wingers are totalitarian at their core.
They don’t believe that people with differing viewpoints should be allowed to be productive members of society.

Yet they’re the ones with the ‘Coexist’ bumper stickers affixed to their Subaru hatchback.

  17. Rather than celebrate the historic election of the first “Donald J Trump” as president, Maloney demonstrates rabid class diversity and acute phobia triggered by this colorful clump of cells… I mean, person. Maloney is probably a twilighter from the Pro-Choice Church, too.

Anyway, he can keep his class diversity including racism and sexism, selective exclusion (“=”), redistributive change (e.g. progressive poverty), progressive/illegal wars, trials by sodomy and abortion, immigration “reform”, and abortion rites, too. And whatever Planned Parenthood is cannibalizing in its chambers for pleasure and profit.

  22. That is a company I’ll make sure never sees a dime from my family. Also, it should be fun reading comments from some of Trump’s supporters who have had similarly nasty things to say about #NeverTrumpers.

  23. I think he’s finding out there are people who do not belong to the intolerant Left. And those people have money to order delivery on-line. And they used to order food from his service. I think he’s just now finding that out.

  26. What a timely coincidence. As you know I’m home a lot because of my lungs. Also my wife still owns two salons on Philly so she still works (I’m trying to get her to sell). Because of these things I order food out about five times a week when I’m too lazy to cook. Last week I downloaded GrubHub to my phone because some restaurants don’t deliver. I just deleted them. I’ll survive. Screw the chump.

As far as I go, it’s absolutely untenable, threatening your employees just because they didn’t vote your way. I don’t care, left or right, this jackas* would have zero say in how I vote. Had I gotten that email, I would have considered that a red flag, and Maloney would not have liked my response, guaranteed. I don’t play well with a threat like that. I sincerely hope some of his employees felt the same way. Firing them over this would be brutally difficult.

Have you told that to the other Trump supporters? Because while I keep posting and telling people I’m willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt now that he’s my President, I keep being told by Trumpers that my opinion is worthless and my help to rebuild this country isn’t needed or wanted. Really feeling that unity these last two days.

Of course I couldn’t care less what I’m being told, but I find it humorous that this CEO and ardent Trump supporters share the same sentiment towards those of us that didn’t support their candidate.

  33. The grocery stores in CA supported the ban on plastic bags…or, rather, the additional cost to the consumer of plastic bags, the profits of which go to the grocery store. So I emailed them and said I am ordering my food online from now on from amazon (through this site). I would rather give a tip to a hardworking delivery gal than to allies of Grampa Jerry.

Jeff Bezos better watch his step too.

I already use Blue Apron for many meals, so I’m phasing out the vast liberal grocery store conspiracy.

  36. my dad woke up one day in lovely Flint and the President elect declared war on the Axis powers and Japan.
The next President dropped nuclear weapons and invaded North Korea, tipping off a full tilt war with the Chicoms.
There was a brief golfing interlude where I was born and I got to wake up to JFK getting elected and shot. LBJ took it over and went all in into Vietnam and graduating from high school was draft board time.
LBJ gave way to Nixon who was hated for a war he didn’t start, and protests went on what seemed like every day.Nixon, gets into Watergate and now I wake up to Gerald Ford a pardon and then golfing interlude before Carter, worst President ever gets voted in, screws the pooch and is brushed aside by Reagan. All the hippies are aghast and faint, they are sure Reagan is going to start a nuclear war with the Soviets. Things go so well that amiable placeholder Bush barfs on Japanese PM and then gets beat by some corrupt rube bonnie and clyde outfit take over…. I could go on and on, but I lived through a good deal of that and never needed a therapy goat and playdoh.

Worked the angle of “you do you, I’ll be me” through some bad presidents and some real doom and gloom
Trump will at best or worst make small to moderate changes in our lives and will be worse to think about than live it

I know this makes me kind of a nitpicky #$$hole, but the President asked for and received a declaration of war on Japan and only Japan. Which was an Axis power having already signed the Tripartite Agreement on 27 September 1940.

He and Churchill wanted the US to declare war on Germany and Italy, but the Preezy still thought a bridge too far for the American people.

On 11 December 1941 Mussolini and Hitler simplified Roosevelt’s problems by declaring war on the United States.

  41. .use Brave for your browser. It’s a start.
I’ve been experimenting with the Brave browser for Android.
It seems to save no data, and appears as a clone or shell for Google Chrome. The adblocking works but slows it down considerably: webpages take perceptibly longer to load.

The privacy aspect may be worth it, and supporting Eich as an expression of ideological support may be appealing, but I am not impressed with the app itself.

I have eaten insect larvae. In survival school in the Navy, and then again just to be polite my hosts in Japan. It was smothered in soy sauce and really wasn’t that bad.

Pro-tip: whatever you do with rattlesnake, DO NOT make a smoker out of your parachute and smoke it as you might as well just eat the parachute. After you ruin the snake you’ll just wear yourself chewing and chewing and chewing. If you’re already in a survival situation the last thing you need is to pull a jaw muscle.

They taught us in the Navy that if gather enough bait to go fishing, you’re going to be better off just forgetting about going fishing and eating the bait. Since Grubhub isn’t a bait shop I see being in any danger of spending money on them. Besides, if you really want to eat fish you can make a net out of your parachute cord.
