Patterico's Pontifications

Mike Lee for Supreme Court

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 12:29 am

I know you didn’t actually mean it, Trump.

I don’t care. You put his name on the list. Nominate him. Or someone equally qualified.

At some point you’re going to learn that you don’t tell the voters what to do. The voters tell you what to do.

Oh, I know. I didn’t vote for you, so I can’t tell you what to do, right? Fine. But you made promises, and some people believed them and expect you to carry them out.

So do it.

  1. I don’t expect you to dance to my tune. But a lot of people voted for you, and they expect you to deliver.

    So deliver.

You do what’s right and we’ll back you up against the scumbag leftists.

You let down the people who voted for you and believed in you, and they will burn your house to the ground.

    Again:

Me? I have no faith in you, But some people do.

For your sake, you’d better come through for them.

    Patterico (115b1f)

  2. @Patterico: Maybe you direct some of your energy to getting the Congresscritters to vote for restraints to executive power while Obama is still in office?

Trump can’t do anything until January, you know.

But first you should go to bed. 🙂

  4. FDR put his main rival on the Court, Trump could do the same. He has to know that if he falters in any way he gets primaried in 2020.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  5. New Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer remained awfully quiet during the entire election season on Trump, even as Harry Reid and some of his other Senate and House colleagues were going hyperbolic.

Schumer’s dealt with Trump for 30 years and knows how he works, including the fact that if you’re complementary to Trump, he’ll be nice to you. If you’re looking for an angle where Trump fails to deliver in the Senate what he promised as far as Supreme Court nominees go, don’t be shocked if Schumer schmoozing Trump on who he should nominate to the court is one of the main reasons why.

  7. You should write up all these frustrated tirades into a letter, put the letter into a bottle then throw it into the Potomac. It’ll wash up somewhere, and the person who reads it might actually be able to look past your fifth grade temper tantrum and see the real pain in your soul.

  8. Someone — I can’t seem to recall who, at the moment — went to some considerable trouble to pin Trump down quite specifically with respect to his promise to choose SCOTUS nominees exclusively from the (revised) written list. The proof was on Trump’s campaign website in a formal press release — as close to “ironclad” as any written campaign commitment can ever be.

I linked it in comments here when it first came out, but here’s the Google cached version from September 23, which includes this (boldface mine):

DONALD J. TRUMP FINALIZES LIST OF POTENTIAL SUPREME COURT JUSTICE PICKS

NEW YORK, NY – Today Donald J. Trump released a second list of individuals he would consider as potential replacements for Justice Scalia at the United States Supreme Court. This group builds upon the highly praised list of choices he named in May 2016. These individuals were selected, first and foremost, based on constitutional principles, with input from respected conservative leaders.

Mr. Trump stated, “We have a very clear choice in this election. The freedoms we cherish and the constitutional values and principles our country was founded on are in jeopardy. The responsibility is greater than ever to protect and uphold these freedoms and I will appoint justices, who like Justice Scalia, will protect our liberty with the highest regard for the Constitution. This list is definitive and I will choose only from it in picking future Justices of the United States Supreme Court.

No double-talk there. Certainly President-elect Trump should be held to this commitment by all concerned, including but not limited to Senate Republicans.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  9. Why in the world would he care about the fever swamp ravings of yours? Do the folks you want to get appointed a favor – oppose them.

    Bill Saracino (7bbb9e)

  10. I’m not so sure Trump should nominate Mike Lee per se.

While Utah remained GOP, the Senate margins are slimmer. And there’s 2018 to think about.

If there were a conservative Representative, that would arguably be better/safer (preferably from a Republican-governed state). Or a judge with a clear conservative track record.

But, yes, he should be held to this commitment.

That being said, the people who will have the most credibility with Trump will be those who supported him from the beginning. So the pressure should be on them to hold Trump to his commitments. He might well listen to them, whereas he owes little to those who did not commit to him when he appeared unlikely at best.

  17. I’m very satisfied that the way of running campaigns that we’ve had may be proven unnecessary. Trump didn’t have all the expensive advisors and a big “ground game”. So many of the people against him (Wilson, Mair) I suspect were against him because he rejected that way of campaigning.

Too many people make too much money off our campaigns, and off our politics in general. I’d like to see an end to all of that. This seems like a good time.

How exactly are the #NeverTrumpers wrong? Electing Trump didn’t disprove anything the #NeverTrump movement stood against. Only Trump can disprove #NeverTrumpers by not falling back on his Liberal tendencies, nominating strong Conservatives to the court, actually listening and using sound advice from his advisors instead of doing what he wants, and finally making good on his promise to stop flying off the handle at 3AM via Twitter and start acting Presidential.

If Trump can follow through then #NeverTrump will have been proven wrong in their concerns about Trump.

  31. Maybee,

Trump used Cambridge Analytica for his polling and GoTV turnout targeting. It is Cruz’s programming and email lists that the Trump campaign rented and successfully used. That’s a different method than the typical GOP GoTV but that doesn’t mean it’s no method.

I don’t expect Trump’s most ardent supporters to give Cruz credit for anything and I doubt they’ll even acknowledge the effort made to GOTV (even if it was fairly late in the game) as today they seem to want to believe in the overwhelming magnetism of their man being enough to pull him to victory. Which is fine, they should enjoy the day, but the fear of them slipping deeper down the rabbit hole is still very real.

Not going to happen, and if it did you can kiss that goal of party unity goodbye. Messing with Texas elections aren’t going to go over well, and trying to knock off the most conservative senator in our lifetime after he supported your guy is about as dumb a move as I can think of.

    Sean (1d5074)

  73. If Trump is as smart as his supporters say he is, he should seek the counsel of at least one NeverTrump person. Mike Lee would be a good choice. At least Trump knows that person would be honest with him and just tell him what he wants to hear.

  74. @71. It will.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  75. @72- He’d likely consult several of the people who were debating him in the primary before Lee. Even McCain. But Cruz, Kasich, Rubio, Jeb, not so much. Watch Firoina. 76. Soothing a bruised ego through back channel patronage of the sort that only the wounded party can provide turns a loss into a win/win situation, without pesky questions of who is using who, what do I get out of it, how does this look , and so on, that a sloppy handshake on the convention stage would have brought.

    It’s genius really.

    papertiger (979789)

  77. Initially, the scuttlebutt had Mike McCaul running against Cruz with Perry’s blessing for the 2018 Senate seat. McCaul is wealthy and could self-fund, but its hard to beat incumbents in Texas. In addition, McCaul won by 57%-38% in his 2016 Congressional re-election, which sounds good but it’s on the low end compared to the percentages posted by most Texas GOP Congressional incumbents. Perry might run but his big financial backer died and I’m not sure he wants another campaign.
