Debate Prep: Big Media Seems to Think Trump Lies

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:18 am

The consensus of Big Media appears to be that Donald Trump is a liar. And they’re not scared to say so. (Screenshots courtesy of Katherine Miller.)

hillary-tasks

It would be nice if she stopped lying too.

There’s something of a controversy as to whether Lester Holt should be fact-checking the candidates in real time. The answer is no. Let the candidates fact-check each other and let it all shake out afterwards. I understand the temptation, with two utterly dishonest people on the stage, to see them put straight right away. But Holt comes from NBC, the same network that gave us the screenshots above. Do you trust him to get it 100% right on the spot?

Me neither.

  1. The first question for Clinton ought to be “Why have you only held one press conference in the past 9 months [or whatever the timeframe is]?”

  2. Or “when did you stop beating your husband… or were those seizures?”

  5. I don’t think the media understands that the appearance of unfairness will just stir up more support for Trump. Those two screenshots are awful. After all, HRC definitely lied repeatedly over the Comey business. But the media suddenly tapdances.

Anyway, we live in a world where we think we are all smart and good….which means people who disagree with us must be dumb and bad.

    Everyone does it these days.

And everyone forgets that all it does is inflame the other side more.

One thing is for sure: Trump knows TV. Clinton does not.

  6. As we go about our day hundreds of “news media” people are brushing up on how to say: “Obviously Hillary won the debate” which will precipitously begin .09 seconds after it ends. The news type already set “Hillary Victorious” as tomorrows headlines with the sub line “Trump to rediscover himself” as Hollywood, the media, academia an the entire leftist juggernaut works to get illegals and felons registered and has their operatives begin mass mailing of “absentee” and “early” ballots. I don’t believe any Philly precincts will go 105% for Hillary like they did Obama but a simple 101% will have to do.

As the once slow plodding advance of leftist extremism advances ever more quickly Trump too will fade. Go and tell your grandchildren to seek government jobs. That is their future. Diversify, immigrate, assimilate then eliminate.

I ask one question. With a U-6 of 15.7% exactly how many immigrants do we need?

  7. I think moveon, etc., will be live tweeting and other social media starting about 30 seconds after it begins about how wonderful and true everything Clinton says is true and what a lying idiot Trump is.

Everything is a disinformation campaign until proven otherwise.
    Not cynicism, observation.

  8. Question #1:

Ms. Clinton, you’ve had to deal with a lot of stress and unfair attacks by Republicans this campaign, how have you handled it so well?

Mr. Trump, we unsealed your divorce documents even though the court refused to do so and it says you’re a rapist. How do you respond?

  10. Anyway, these are not the main tasks, and the list here shows bias, because it basically says that Hillary Clinton is all right.

Hillary Clinton’s main task is to trip up Donald Trump on facts about the world, and on morality and ethics, and disqualify himself as president in the eyes of many people. And Donald Trump’s main task is to seem like a plausible president.

Hillary Clinton’s task also is to avoid getting tripped up on facts about herself and her activities and her record, if she should get asked; and Donald Trump’s task is to ask her questions, or make statements about her record or future, that don’t have good answers. I said DON’T have good answersm and if she doesn’t answer the criticisms, point it out.

Neither of them has the task of avoiding lying. They have the task of avoiding getting caught in a lie, or in an important error of fact.

Hillary Clinton wants the moderator, Lester Holt, to proclaim stuff Trump says as lies or wrong, (and you must understand that it doesn’t matter to them whether Lester is correct or not, what counts is the number of times he corrects him and how great a percentage of the audience what he says is over head of.)

And they want him NOT to point hers out because they allegedly aren’t as important or as frequent or as blatant.

Both of their policy proposals and promises as to what they would do as president contain important lies and unlikelihoods or impossibilities or things that in reality contradict each other, or that won’t work.

This works in fact, although, as Marxist economists daid the question is: How does it workin theory?

  13. 13. That doesn’t make any sense. It’s not like these screen captures were taken aboard an airplane, or a fast nmoving train. Who or waht keeps changing teh time.

    =yawn= So watch C-SPAN.

After all, this isn’t a ‘debate.’ It’s television.

It’s not the moderator’s job to fact-check the contestants but to play time keeper and keep the show moving.

  23. Given the size of their audience, I doubt MSNBC qualifies as ‘Big’ Media.

If the debates allow fact checking it should account for the blatant partisanship of fact checkers by not having the moderator do it. Allow each candidate to bring 3 fact-checkers who sit on the sides of the stage with air-horns, and when the opposing candidate makes what they consider a lie they blast the air-horn. After the debate the fact-checkers will explain each instance they claimed the opposing candidate was lying.

They’ve already played that card. “Debates hardly ever matter” and so forth. Except, of course, when the MSM can use them to spin for the Democrat.

“Ah, Ford, you dolt, Poland is too a Communist country. Says so right here in my List of Communist Countries!” Never mind that 15 years later it was clear that there were NO Communist countries west of the Koreas. Just Communist Parties with guns.

  42. Debate fun fact: No Kiddie Table in this debate. But because she is so much smaller, Maudie has been provided a shorter podium than JR. Gee, if JR was granted the courtesy, he’d be all the more taller.

    No ‘kid’-ding.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  43. BTW, why even watch the debate tonight? The result is as preordained as anything could be. The MSM will be unanimous in saying that Hillary won and that Trump was a boob, and a Drudge poll will show the exact opposite.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  44. “@31-When Trump and illary greet each other on stage,…”

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  48. @48- Toadstool?

NBC just aired they cut down her podium to size so headshots on TV will appear symmetrical but the walk on should show their size difference. She was denied any platform to stand on. Voters tend to vote for the taller candidate– there’s some data to support this trend — and some myth ot it as well– but it’s not totally definitive. But height is an advantage.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  49. The images I saw show one of the podiums raised, not cut down.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  50. How are they adjusting for the fact that Clinton’s got bigger hands?

    Leviticus (efada1)

  51. They’re making excuses for her losing already— moderator unfair; not her forte, a studier not a showman…

Today’s battle state polls have Team Maudie alarm bells ringing– they’re shaken… Colorado and PA are in play.

Personally, I suspect this election is going to go like 1980’s– in the last ten days or so the numbers will slide to JR and Maudie will get cancelled. Then do her Jon Lovitz/SNL ‘I can’t believe I’m losing to this guy’ impression.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  52. @52– Well, they reported hers cut down. NBC podium biases revealed???

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  53. If Trump does good, debates don’t matter.

    mg (31009b)

  54. Should be amusing to see what she wears given her hydration needs… 90 minutes at a podium might require Maudie to be toting and cloaking one of those ‘astronaut diapers under a pantsuit. JR might just have his usual latex strap on…. a motorman’s friend.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  55. @56– If it’s a draw, he wins. If he wins, its over.

” Nate Silver’s site now says Trump is 54.5% likely to win, and Hillary is just is at just 45.5%.”

Nate Silver says his formula, and the thinking of many journalists, probably understimates the probability of Trump winning. Betting markets he says, would capture it, but he’d like to see what a betting market limited to political journalists and commentators would do. (he thinks they’d underrate it, but he also seems to think regular betting markets overrate it.)

    http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/election-update-where-the-race-stands-heading-into-the-first-debate/

In general, FiveThirtyEight’s polls-plus model has closely tracked betting markets — more closely than any other major forecast (including our own polls-only model). There’s a modest gap between them now. Whereas polls-plus gives Clinton a 58 percent chance and Trump a 42 percent chance, Betfair gives Clinton a 62 percent chance and Trump a 34 percent chance (reserving a 4 percent chance that someone other than Clinton or Trump somehow becomes the next president, a possibility that FiveThirtyEight’s models do not consider).

For a variety of reasons, ranging from the fact that that gap isn’t all that large to that betting markets can plausibly account for some factors that FiveThirtyEight’s models don’t, I’m not sure about whether I think there’s enough edge there that I’d actually advocate laying money down on Trump. I suppose I wish there were a betting market open only to political journalists and commentators, though. My hard-to-prove sense is that they underrate Trump’s chances as compared with both betting markets and our forecasts.

538 is making an error here in eschewing the possibility of someone other than Clinton or Trump becoming the next president.

Maybe it’s more far left wing, but maybe not quite. And it’s not all that careful with the facts. Like late night comedians, maybe, but worse?

It shows the candidates getting ready for the debate, dressed like prizefighters, with boxing gloves.

Panel 1: Hillary sitting down in her corner, being coached by Obama

GOAD TRUMP INTO HAVING AN OUTBURST…. THEN IF THERE’S TIME, HIGHLIGHT YOUR QUALITIES THAT ARE LIKEABLE ENOUGH.

Panel 2: Again, Obama coaching Hillary:

AND I CAN’T STRESS THIS ENOUGH: STOP PRAISING REPUBLICANS. IT’S DUMB AS HELL.

Panel 3: Trump in his corner, being coached by Mitt Romney.

HERE, USE MY BINDER FULL OF ZINGERS

Romney is holding a looseleaf folder labeled ZINGERS

(The people drawing the cartoon somehow lose sight of, maybe on purpose, that Romney has not endorsed Trump!)

Panel 4: Romney is now holding his looseleaf book closer, not over the ring. Trump is speaking:

NO THANKS, NERD! I’VE GOT AN INTERNET FULL OF RACISTS.

Well, you can see their bias.

    =========================================

There’s also another very wordy panel.

    On top:

Bush Administration casualty Colin Powell’s hacked emails criticizing the current Presidential candidates…

Picture of Colin Powell with a smartphone:

    Smartphone says:

    “Trump is a disaster.”

Also on the other side of his face, in the same kind of (electronic) cloud:

“Everything HRC touches she kind of screws up with hubris.”

    Below the drawing:

…have vaulted him to the top of the list of people we wish were running for president

The author, or cartoonist, may be someone called Keith Knight.

  101. Telling Trump to stop lying is like telling water to stop flowing downhill, SarahW. Ditto for Hillary. With the two of them together, we’re in danger of a super-critical mass of mendacity.

  102. @1. The first question should be obvious but likely out of left field for Lester to pitch:

Why do you want to be President of the United States?

Maudie would do a Kranden hummada-hummada, searching for a six point response.

JR would keep his eye on the ball, say, ‘to make America great again’ and knock it out of the park.

  121. WASHINGTON, Sept. 26 (UPI) — Donald Trump would earn enough votes to win the presidency in the Electoral College based on UPI/CVoter’s state tracking poll released Monday.
Trump would amass 292 votes and Clinton would get 246 with 270 needed to secure the oval office.

But the candidates’ leads are narrow enough — 5 percent or less — in 12 states to classify them as swing states, meaning 156 electoral votes could be up for grabs.

If the battleground states are not counted, the race would be tied 191-191.

  122. Three Breitbart/Gravis state polls of likely voters — Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina — demonstrate how close the presidential election between Democrat Hillary R. Clinton and her GOP rival Donald J. Trump has become just before the first presidential debate.
In Minnesota, Clinton and Trump are tied with each having 43 percent of the vote, said Doug Kaplan, the managing director of Gravis Marketing, the Florida-based polling firm that executed the poll.

In Pennsylvania, Clinton leads Trump with 46 percent to his 43 percent, and in North Carolina the former first lady leads Trump 44 percent to the New York City developer’s 43 percent, he said.
