Ahmad Khan Rahami Sought in Connection with NYC and NJ Bombings

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:24 am

New York Daily News:

Authorities started a fierce search Monday morning for the first person sought in connection with weekend bombings in New York City and New Jersey.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, is the first person identified in connection with the bombings. New York City Mayor de Blasio said Rahami is believed to be armed and dangerous.

Also:

The FBI took five people with possible links to the Chelsea explosion into custody Sunday night in Brooklyn as authorities shut down a busy New Jersey rail station after finding multiple pipe bombs in a garbage can, police and New Jersey officials said.

Meanwhile, the guy who stabbed nine people at a Minnesota mall was a “Somali-American.” ISIS has claimed responsibility for that attack — but, so far, apparently not the bombings in NYC and NJ.

I believe Dana may have something to say about President Obama’s reaction — or lack thereof — to all this.

UPDATE: Ahmad Khan Rahami has been taken into custody after a shootout with police in Linden, New Jersey.

Lagging support among Hispanic voters for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and congressional candidates in crucial races has stoked deep concern that the party and the presidential campaign are doing too little to galvanize a key constituency.

While Clinton holds a significant lead over Republican rival Donald Trump in every poll of Hispanic voters, less clear is whether these voters will turn out in numbers that Democrats are counting on to win. Clinton trails President Obama’s 2012 performance in several Latino-rich states, including Florida, Nevada, Colorado and Arizona. In those same states, on which Democrats’ prospects of retaking the Senate hinge, some down-ballot Democrats remain unknown to many Hispanic voters.

Relatives of Ahmad Khan Rahami. They were on the Belt Parkway heading in the direction of the Verrazano bridge. They thought they might be taking him to the airport. (Newark Airport)

Obviously police must have been told to be on the lookout for cars with certain license plate numbers possibly heading toward mass transportation. The stop probably wasn’t planned. Had it been better planned, they’d have been waiting at the airport.

They had him as a suspect and the secret has been blown.

His home in Elizabeth, New Jersey, has also been searched.

There’s an Amber alert out – or was around 8:30 or earlier – for an armed 28-year old man. don’t know if it is him.

An emergency alert was sent out this morning asking people to call 9-1-1 if Rahami was seen.

  6. Washingtontimes.com reported: Speaking on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Mr. Priebus said every Republican who ran in 2016 needs to get behind Mr. Trump. Those who haven’t — including Mr. Kasich, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz — could see diminished support from the party moving forward.

“People who agreed to support the nominee, that took part in our process, they used tools from the RNC. They agreed to support the nominee. They took part in our process. We’re a private party, we’re not a public entity. Those people need to get on board,” Mr. Priebus said. “And if they’re thinking they’re going to run again someday, I think we’re going to evaluate our process, the nomination process, and I don’t think it’s going to be that easy for them.”

  10. I believe Dana may have something to say about President Obama’s reaction — or lack thereof — to all this.

What makes Obama’s non-reaction worse is that he’s in New York City RIGHT NOW for UN Week. He’s literally at Ground Zero and STILL can’t be bothered to put out a statement?!? If nothing else, think about your own g**d*** safety!

  11. NY Post:

Both of the Chelsea bombs were built with pressure cookers, using Christmas lights as fuses, sources said.

That method is the same one that brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev used for the bombs they detonated near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, killing three people and wounding more than 260.

But the Tsarnaevs used parts from remote-control cars as triggering devices and black powder from fireworks as explosive fuel.

In addition to cellphone triggers, the Chelsea bombs — which were packed with nails and ball bearings — contained Tannerite as the explosive material, sources said.

Tannerite is the brand name of a compound created in 1996 for use in exploding targets that “produces a water vapor and a thunderous boom” when shot with a high-power rifle, according to the manufacturer’s website.

  14. Rahami was first a suspect in the New York bombs but there is no explanation yet of what led them to him.

    He liked racing cars.

He had seemed to be in the process of taking over from his father the daily operation of his family’s fast-food restaurant on Elmora Avenue in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

    Q. Was he embezzling money? That could be a reason for spending more time at the restaurant, if he at the same time was also involved in bomb plots. Otherwise, you’d expect him to be spending less time. There are actually four sons and probably two daughters.

    No real details yet.

  15. Well, I am sure Minnesota’s programs of community engagement, funding of a broad array of mental health and education programs, and community led intervention teams that pay local Somali elders to identify and reach out to youth at risk for radicalization will prevent any more of these unfortunate incidents from happening again.

The REAL problem, of course, is that there may be a “backlash” against other Somali Muslims. We cannot let our diversity be a casualty. That’s what the terrorists really want.

  27. Rahami was shot. Linden Police had received a call complaining that an unknown individual was sleeping in the doorway of a local bar and went there to wake the man up, assuming he was just a bum.

Then they noticed that he had a beard and resembled the wanted person from a poster that had been circulated because a fingerprint from Rahami had been connected to a bomb. They asked him to show his hands (bad move?) and then he pulled out a gun and began to shoot and fled, exchanging fire with police and sending a barrage of bullets down the street.

Two cops were hurt. One was hit in the abdomen at close range when Rahami fired from the doorway, but the officer was protected by a bulletproof vest and another cop was injured in the face by ricocheting debris. Rahami was sent to the hospital.

Rahami was shot multiple times, including once in the leg, and was taken to a hospital by ambulance. He is expected to survive, and video showed him alert and conscious. Photos from the scene showed the thickly bearded suspect on the rain-soaked sidewalk, his hands cuffed behind his back, his shirt rolled up revealing his bare chest as he lifted his head up off the ground.

Officials said he underwent surgery, but did not have additional updates on his condition. He is expected to be charged with attempted murder of police officers in the Linden shootout; charges related to the bombings weren’t immediately clear Monday afternoon.

When he was running from police, he started firing at random passing vehicles.

Authorities also raided the fried chicken restaurant owned by Rahami’s father and several other buildings in the area.

They think he is the man in the surveillance video in Manhattan.

Two years ago, Ahmad Khan Rahami took a trip to Afgghanistan

    More than one:.

Rahami was questioned every time he entered the United States, as is standard procedure, one official told CNN on Monday. But he was not on the radar as someone who might have been radicalized, the official said.

Another official said Rahami traveled overseas a good bit, also visiting countries not in the Middle East.

  31. He was complaining about the number of tickets his restraurant received, and sued several years ago, claiming discrimination:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3796768/Ahmad-Rahami-sued-local-police-New-Jersey-claiming-persecuted-Muslim.html

Ahmad Rahami filed federal lawsuit claiming cops in Elizabeth, New Jersey subjected him and his family to discrimination and ‘selective enforcement’
Rahimis claimed that police tried to shut down their chicken restaurant too early each night with ‘baseless’ tickets and summonses

Ahmad, 28, his father Mohammad Sr, 53, and his brother Mohammad, brought the lawsuit together in 2011.

tey They alleged that for two years beginning in April 2009 they were unfairly targeted for staying open past 10pm despite being permitted to do so.

One of Ahmed’s brothers got into a fight with a police officer who tried to shut down the restaurant, BBC Worldwide reported, but fled to Afghanistan before he could be prosecuted.

Claims made in the lawsuit that people said ‘Muslims should not have businesses here’, ‘Muslims are trouble’ and ‘Muslims don’t belong here’ are reported to be completely untrue.

The store used to be open 24 hours a day. People complained people there were rowdy. So the city of Elizabeth. New Jersey passed a special ordinance directed at that store. The store refused to abide by it.

And maybe also they were complaining they were being asked to close before the time of closing according to the law.

Ramadi spent a little over a year in Quetta, Pakistan, but when he got back he told friends he had been in Afghanistan. Quetta is a center for Islamists. What happened before to get him there is not been reported. Probably personal connections to Pakistani intelligence officers I would day.

In 2014 when he tried to stab his sister or actuaklly stabbed his brotehr in the leg, or both, and the family called police, his father caleld him a terrorist, based no doubt on his behavior. Databases were checked and nothing was found, but the investigation was cut short prematurely because his father took it back saying he was only calling him names or something like that, and had no actual information. he wanted to get his won out of jail and he did get out afetr a while. The FBI has some kind of rule as to when they can investigate. The tamerlan Tsarnaev investigation (you know into possible contacts abroad ) was also cut short when Russia refused tio supply any more detail.

The restaurant has been for sale for months,

He had a child with a girlfriend named Maria while in high school – his daughter is now in elementary school. he also married a wife in Pakistan in 2011.
