DEVELOPING STORY: Explosion in NYC, Bombs Found in New Jersey

Filed under: General — JVW @ 8:53 pm

[guest post by JVW]

At roughly 8:40 pm Eastern time tonight an explosion rocked New York’s Chelsea neighborhood. At this point, 29 people are reported as injured, though thankfully it appears that there are no fatalities.

The blast was apparently at 135 W. 23rd Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues. Reportedly, a second bomb was found four blocks later at 27th Street. Mayor Bill de Blasio has said that the bombs were clearly placed intentionally, though he naturally hastens to add that there is not yet a clear link to terrorism.

chelsea-map

Earlier today another bomb exploded along a race course in New Jersey that was to host a Marine Corps charity run, with no injuries reported. The race had been delayed when a suspicious backpack had been found along the race course, and had the race started on time it is believed that runners would have passed by the explosion point right as the bomb was detonated. Other explosive devices have been found along the route.

I’m guessing there will be plenty of news about this in coming days.

  2. not yet a clear link to terrorism.

That means he, of course, has no idea what kind of motive it was, and by whom.

  3. That means he, of course, has no idea what kind of motive it was, and by whom.

Yep, and also that he desperately hopes it isn’t linked to Islamic terrorism. You know in his heart of heart he so wants this to be one of the Basket of Deplorables.

    JVW (6e49ce)

  4. @JVW That’s right. Well, it doesn’t have to be that. Somebody angry at Con Edison could also be all right.

  5. in two different locations, next to a center from the blind, if the daily news has it right?

  6. Thank God they saw the backpack.

The word terrorism must not mean what I think it means if this isn’t a clear example.

  7. in this administration, you’re lucky they didn’t call it a weather balloon, jeh johnson who ponied up half a million in part from middle eastern parties who wanted gitmo detainees, well where does he end up first as pentagon counsel and dhs,

  8. Your map has the wrong site.

The explosion was at 23rd St betwene 6th and 7th Avenue, in front of a resddence for disabled people. A second possible devise, which did not explode, was found at 135 West 27th St.

29 people injured at the site of the explosion at 23rd Street, but only one injury is considered serious. That probably means anyone who heard it was checked for signs of hidden injury. People at the Boston Marathon bombing are thought to have been injured without realizing it.

The area between 5th and 8th Avenue and 14th and 34th Street is closed off to pedestrians and traffic, but, if I have this right, people living there are told to stay in their homes while police go around looking for possible additional devices, and people living around the 27th St location are also being told to stay away from windows.

  11. It’s nor at all clear that what they saw at 27th St is a bomb at all.

  13. I was at the rally in Colorado Springs where, first thing, Trump brought up the bombing in New York.

He said that they didn’t know the cause of it yet and that would come out, but implied he had his suspicions.

Of course, soon thereafter, Media were criticizing Trump bringing it up without knowing all the facts. Well, he said he didn’t know all the facts.

Clearly his instincts were correct, sadly, we would all agree.

    Denver Guy (4750ec)

  14. After the rally, I left my girlfriend to walk over and talk to the protesters face to face.

One asked me why I was supporting Trump and I said because he’s a good guy who cares about the security of his people. I was bringing up the terrible consequences of importing hundreds of thousands of Syrian “refugees,” as Hillary Clinton wants to do, when I was shood along by the police.

    Denver Guy (4750ec)

  15. Sources tell CNN that the second device on 27 St is said to be a pressure cooker with dark colored wires sticking out of it and a cellphone attached and maybe there’s a note or some writing and it is still there. Sort of like the Boston Marathon bomb.

Or maybe that report is all wrong. There will be no controlled explosion – they will try to get that out of the area.

The explosion happened at 8:50 pm (not 8:30 as originally reported) in front of 131 West 23rd St between 6th and 7th avenue. Some injuries involve metal sharpnel. Four windows exploded out, but none said to be hurt. Many people would have been walking on the street. Exact cause of the explosion not determined. But it’s not a gas explosion and was an intentional act.

Mayor and new police commissioner (Bratton retired/resigned yesterday) held a press conference around 11 pm.

I was bringing up the terrible consequences of importing hundreds of thousands of Syrian “refugees,” as Hillary Clinton wants to do, </blockquote. It's 10,00 so far, with a goal of 100,000 and they are extremely unlikely to be terrorists. It's not like this is an easy way to get into the United States with no waiting. They have all gone through extreme vetting. The 2-year de facto quarantine (so far) by itself has to count for something even if they were never interviewed. It's not like someone can just use a fake passort and a fake story, and as if the United states can't detect fake Syrian passports (by an inconsistent serial number for one thing.)

  18. What does “four blocks later” mean?

the perpetrators seem to be following the mo of the boston bombers,

If the first device was like the second device, and if the second device is not just simply a pressure cooker after all. They’re looking for possible bombs.

maybe that accidental land mine in central park some months back was the precursor,

That was most probably just somebody making or using an illegal firecracker, which failed to explode because of dampness, and then abandoning it. It wasn’t in a placd where a lot of people go.

It was a smaller explosion, too.

What does “four blocks later” mean?

23+4 = 27. JVW used the wrong word. 4 blocks further north, but maybe he didn’t know which direction you went to go from 23rd to 27th S.

He also has the locations wrong on his map. The exploson was at 131 West 23rd St, and the possible second device, which they are trying to figure out how to get out of there without risking an explosion, if it is a bomb, and have ruled out a controlled explosion, is at 135 West 27 St. Four blocks later if you were walking in that direction in the middle of the block somehow.

You said it. Syrian refugees are neither converts nor second generation.

  26. “You said it. Syrian refugees are neither converts nor second generation.”

But their children are second generation, you moron. When they rebel, both against their parents and what they see as our weak and decadent culture, they become radicalized.

Plus who do you think it is that makes Muslim converts? That would be Muslims.

    Denver Guy (4750ec)

  27. in short we have little assurance, where any of these syrians come from, in actuality,

It’s pretty clear some member(s) of the royal family was/were involved, because the head of Saudi intelligence suddenly quit 10 days before, and the U.S. government summary of information is very carefully worded.

  31. Reporter who got there early, says about what he found out when he asked people: The gist of it is that people saw or heard it, and then there was running.

Not clear if it was in the middle of the street or not. Heard that it was in a dumpster, but there are metal fragments in people. FDNY NYPD and EMS and bomb sniffing dogs came to 23rd St.

35,000 people watched his video as of 3 hours ago (10:30)

A lot of people tried to walk past the police tape, and were being grabbed by police and stopped from going in there. Police tape was put behind him about 10 minutes after he got there, later was pushed out.

No idea as to how they found the 27th device. Pictures exist of it. Picture may show a note.

  33. 30. Denver Guy (4750ec) — 9/17/2016 @ 10:30 pm

And of course, some of the first generation Muslim immigrants will be Jihadis.

In Europe the jihadis are all second generation. There are just about no people actually brought up with more than vague knowledge of Islam who are jihadis. This version of their religion is too new. They are virtually all “born again” or out and out converts.

And jihadis tend to get killed so don’t bring up children that way. There are a few leaders maybe.

    Sammy Finkelman (1a8726)

  34. Not that there aren’t some more establoshed clerics who are teaching it or something lose to it.

We need to go after the teachers, not the students. This is not just coming through the Internet.

    Sammy Finkelman (1a8726)

  35. 36 * Or something close to it.

    That’s the big problem.

This isn’t historical Islam but it is official Islam in places. Going out and killing people is what you could call a heresy.

    Sammy Finkelman (1a8726)

  36. #17 Would a jihadist make something so obvious in appearance? Or is this part and parcel of more-frequent false flag stuff as the election gets closer?

    The Gentle Grizzly (544557)

  37. “In Europe the jihadis are all second generation.”

That makes it worse. However, it isn’t true. The Paris attackers included several first generation ISIS.

Sammy, the mass stabbing attack in Minnesota today was done by a Muslim shouting—you know what he was shouting.

No Muslim should be allowed to immigrate to the United States save that they have a special visa for, for example, providing intelligence or translation services for American forces overseas, and be in danger of their life.

    That is it.

    Aside from that, mass deportations.

    Denver Guy (4750ec)

  38. There are several dozen Muslim-majority nations that could absorb 100,000 Syrian refugees. There is simply no reason for any Western democracy to take them. We can certainly help facilitate, if we wish. But we have no shortage of immigrants.

  39. Just look at the security videos already surfacing from the 23rd street blast on the cablers from security cameras. Within just a few hours.

So WHERE are the security videos of Maudie collapsing like jello?????

Why isn’t the press pressing for them?

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  40. @Denver Guy:the mass stabbing attack in Minnesota

The way so many Muslims got to Minnesota is that their parents were settled there after fleeing Somalia. And now Minnesota is the #1 producer of Muslim terrorists in the US.

Roughly contemporaneous are the Hmong, who settled there after fleeing Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos. And while the Hmong have definitely had trouble assimilating, their children and grandchildren have not become terrorists.

    Gabriel Hanna (7e037e)

  41. Here’s a link to some articles about who the Star Tribune calls “Minnesota men”, but who are invariably second-generation Somalis.

  42. The second device was neutralized and removed.

The 6th Avenue trains are skipping 23rd St – the 7th Avenue trains both 28th and 23rd St (There is no 28 St stop on6th Avenue) It is scheduled to continue that way till 4 am Monday.

So WHERE are the security videos of Maudie collapsing like jello?????

Why isn’t the press pressing for them?

    1. No casualties.

    2. The information conveyed would be nil – there’s only one spot of interest to focus on, and it’s unlikely to be better in any way, or to show anything different that you can’t tell from the video that is already out.

    3. It takes hours to get and maybe some luck.

Every person that wanted video used the video that was available.

It’s a good question why that sort of thing only surfaces after things like explosions or crimes. It would good to see an explanation as to why and how this surfaces here.

One point: There may have been mrre videos here.

    Sammy Finkelman (1a8726)

  44. Another reason: In a case like an explosion, or a crime, they know there is an explosion, but they don’t have video. So you have different organziations working simultaneously to obtain video.

In the case of Hillary Clinton collapsing the first thing anyone knew was the vide.

Also: Coverage isn’t all that complete.

And: Hillary Clinton collapsing was confined to one spot and didn’t attract any attention. What would you get from video from 100 feet away? An unmarked and unremarkable car going down the street?

There was no noise to hear. There was no picture to get of a fleeing suspect. There was no picture of people running, no police cars, no ambulance arriving.

    Sammy Finkelman (1a8726)

  45. Well, not to ignore NYC, but we have trouble right here in River City:

The “refugees” are after welfare. Why do you think they are rioting in Calais? They want to get to Britain where the “salary” is higher. Ask them. Britain provides cars for each wife. Labour devised a policy of importing Pakistani Muslims 20 years ago to win elections. Democrats are trying to do the same.

France declared itself a “Musselman” nation years ago as it was trying to displace Britain from the Middle East,

The Muslim Mayor of London opposes “assimilation.” He said so.

    Counterintuitive at minimum.

  51. They seem to be both over-reacting and under-reacting – cautious in two different ways. It is interesting what everybody seems to regard as caution: Aniticipate more, but say little about what it was, who did it etc.

The reason the subway stations were closed, apparently, was that they did a search for structural damage, even though the explosion wasn’t too close to the tracks. Governor Cuomo announced that they completed it, and found no damage, but the stations are still going to stay closed till tomorrow, and some entrances may still be closed tomorrow morning because it is still part of the crime scene and they don’t know when the ionvestigators will say that it over. Details will be on the MTA website.

The remains of the pipe bomb in New Jersey (3 pipe bombs, not all of which exploded), the bomb in Chelsea, and the unexploded device on 27 St, have been taken to Quantico, Virginia. There doesn’t seem to be a similarity between the New Jersey device and the unexploded device in New York, which was a pressure cooker. A pressure cooker sounds like an al Qaeda design, but this also doesn’t sound very skilled or professional. The device maker erred on the side of no explosion. Al Qaeda and ISIS want something bigger then this kind of stuff, and putting the bomb in a dumpster limits injuries maybe. Of course there was a not too skilled bomb maker associated with Pakistan a few years ago.

Of the people were taken to a hospital, about half of them are released, and more than one had serious injuries, probably something inside, probably glass in most cases. Windows were shattered even up to 4th floor.

NO crater, the bomb was in a dumpster, but the authorities are still not using the word bomb.

The one on New Jersey had a timer, the timing was off because the race started late. It started later because a backpack was discovered that had nothing to do with this, and because people took longer signing in than expected. It was placed 3/4 of a mile from the start of the 5K race, and was placed in a garbage can. The backpack was left by a teenager near the starting line. It had no bomb, but because if it some other bomb exploded when nobody was there.

The New Jersey race was a charity run associated with the U.s. Marines.

Governor Cuomo said they are looking at security video to see if they can identify a suspect. WNBC Channel 4, on TODAY in New York this morning at 7 am, mentioned that they had obtained several different videos, but I don’t think they showed anything except a few still pictures.

New Jersey Governot Christie on Fox News Sunday said of course the pipe bombs in New Jersey is terrorism, but they just don’t know who did it, whether it was domestic etc. Both Gov Cuomo and Christie are saying thay will find out who did it. Cuomo says we have the best police force. There’ll be police at airports, bus stations and train stations “in an excess of caution.”

My opinion is, the two New York bombs are by the same person and that was all the bombs he had.

It will take him at least 2 or 3 weeks to build some more. If he does things any different he may blow himself up, whch is bad since it could hurt the neighbors. He may have been trained in Montreal. That’s where the Tsarnaev brothers had a connection. The best clue might be a fingerprint, or DNA. They could try tracing down where the pressure cooker was sold wholesale. I think they would not want to panic the perpetrator.

  60. Update early AM hours Monday:

5 bombs found in a backpack near a train station in Elizaeth, New Jersey. A robot attempts to dosarm one of the bombs – it snipped a wire, and it exploded. People told to expect more detonations, but none have haoppened so far.

The bomb on 27 st was found by a 66-year old woman who had been out on a night in the town. It was not hidden. She saw a pot in the street. She said to herself that’s strange, a pot on the sidewalk. And it had wires, and something like a cell phone. It looked like a child’s discarded science experiment. She called 911.

The explosion on 23rd Street was very loud. It was heard ina movie theater on the corner of 8th Avenue almost two avenue blocks away. All the people injured were out of the hospital already on on Sunday morning. There may have been screws in the bomb. People were bloody. Two people in a car passing by were injured.

Five people were arrested on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn going off te Verranzano Bridge from Staten Island (which is also a way to come from New Jersey) No word on who and why or whether this pans out. Elizabeth, New Jersey is at such a latitude that the best way to cross the Hudson Rover is through Staten Island – besides you avoid tolls.

The train station in Elizabeth, New Jersey remains closed. 23rd St in Manhattan is also closed.

    Sammy Finkelman (dec35d)

  63. Update and correction: The car that was stopped in Brooklyn was not heading INTO Brooklyn from the Verranzano Bridge, but OUT of Brooklyn. It was stopped because of suspicion that maybe it might be heading toward Newark Airport. The five people in are apparently members of one family and were taken into Manhattan for questioning. It was stopped, obviously, because of the license plate number. They are relatives of a man who is now the chief suspect in the New Jersey bombings. He does not have an Arabic name, it sounds Pakistani, and in fact he is an Afghan, now an American citizen. They’re looking for him – they don’t know where he is.

Investigators were not disposed at first that much to say the the New Jersey and New York bombs were linked, but they are more inclined, although it sounds like the only thing those bombs have in common is that they were supposed to be set off by a flip phone (sometimes now called an Obamaphone)

The New Jersey pipe bombs used black powder, while the New York devices used a substance similar to Tannerite, that is, it was a combination of ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder. It’s rarely used in the United States for homemade bombs. Tannerite is used at firearms ranges. The two ccmponents of Tannerite can be bought separately fairly easily because each one on its own is not an explosive.

Police seem to be collecting any and every bit of debris from the explosion in Chelsea they can find. An Uber car taking a woman and two children as passengers and was driving along 23rd St near 7th Avenue at about 8:30 (his time) Saturday night when there was an explosion. He stopped and both he and the passenger called 911. The back window of his 2012 Toyota Camry and two doors were damaged. He drove his passengers to Madison Avenue and 40 St and dropped them off and left his car there, as police had instructed, and the passengers also left their bags, which included purchases from Macy’s and Altos. Sunday afternoon, FBI agents were pretty much taking his car apart looking for bomb remnants. Maybe they did it because this was the only care they knew had been near the explosion. I mean by this time they had plenty of other evidence. Of course they want every little part because maybe they can put the bomb back together, but they are not going to get it if it got blown so far. I suppose there’s always a chance they’ll find a key part to the trigger – a spring or something, or better yet something with a serial number.

But realistically, they are just going to get some more of the metal ball bearings both bombs were filled with. They have enough of them, both from parked cars and the street and from the patients. The car was not right in front of the explosion. The dismantling of the car should have been called off, and they should just have requested that any garage whch reors the car give them whatever they find.

The bomb on 23rd St. was placed underneath a dumpster that was in front of Selis Manor, a 205-unit Section 8 apartment building that provides affordable housing for the visually impaired and disabled, which was there because some renovations were being done on the 5th and the 6th floors.
The dumpster was blown 100 feet away and across the street.

One person living nearby, who had bought wine, was lifted up into the air and she fell on the ground which was littered with glass and her wine bottle was also broken. The force of the wind must have been mild tornado or light hurricane maybe, I don’t know. The worst injury may be someone who lost two teeth.

By the way surge pricing for Uber kicked in automatically after the explosion until Uber headquarters was alerted and stopped it.

The unexploded bomb was removed from 27th St at 2:25 am, Sunday morning, and put into a “total containment vessel” – a spherical chamber attached to a police truck – and taken to the New York Police Department facility at Rodman’s Neck in the Bronx, where bombs are always taken to be defused or explosed. The “total containment vessel” is something like an inside-out diving vessel – omstead of keeping teh pressure out, it keeps it in, while it has tiny vents that allows air to escape so it sounds only like ahammer hitting a piece of steel if a bomb explodes.

They pondered a lot what to do, and finally, late Sunday, blew off the top, preserving most of the bomb, and sometime after that it was sent to the FBI in Quantico, Virginia.

The woman who reported the 27th St device was maybe not the only person who saw it. There may have been several 911 calls, and also two state troopers may have found it independently – or were they there because somebody called? The 66-year old woman, who had actually headed out of her apartment on 27 St with the idea of going to 23rd St (says the New York Post) – she’s a travel phootographer hung around the pot to see what it turned out to be until someone from the bomb squad, which had arrived, told her to run.

People weren’t allowed either to go into or out of the crime scene on 23rd St Saturday night. Some residents who had bene kept out wereescorted in by police around 3 am.

Nobody is saying anything more about the handwritten letter, beyond what appeared in the New York Post, and it apparently is not visible in the photograph of the 27 St device, but they aren’t saying anything either about the backpack in New Jersey that allegedly delayed the start of the race. Maybe that wasn’t the main factor is delaying the start of the race past half an hour.
