Trump: I Regret Things I Said That Caused Pain

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:11 am

What a pussy, am I right? (I didn’t want to say it. That lady over there said it. I’m just repeating it.)

It’s Trump 2.0. He regrets unspecified things!

Sometimes, in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don’t choose the right words or you say the wrong thing. I have done that. And believe it or not, I regret it. And I do regret it, particularly where it may have caused personal pain. Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these issues.

I, for one, believe Big Media will accept this and move on. I believe they will never press him, day after day, about what, precisely, he supposedly regrets.

Oh, wait: I don’t actually believe that at all.

  4. It is sad and pathetic to watch folks work themselves up over two or three speeches in an effort to convince themselves that Trump is something he is not. And never will be. Namely, a serious, rational, adult who is worthy of holding the office of President. Given his history and his own statements about himself, how can anyone believe anything he says? He doesn’t regret saying those things, he believes those statements won him the nomination. His only “regret” is that those statements might now contribute to his loss in the general election. I watched the video, his “apology” was not in the least sincere. We remain royally screwed.

    narciso (732bc0)

  13. Seriously? I’ve been going back over some of the things Trump supporters say. Two: “Trump will make America great again.” “Trump will keep us safe.”

Let’s skip, for the sake of argument, “How?” and go to the substance.

You can be great or you can be safe but you cannot be both. The people who made this country great were not safe. Not in the Mayflower, not in the Dark And Bloody Ground, not at the Alamo, not at Verdun, not at Normandy, not in Apollo 1 … but you get the picture.

Great nations don’t build walls. They build navies. Maybe even space navies. And history shows that their walls will not keep them safe unless they’re the “wooden walls” of Themistocles (ships) or their walls are “the breasts of their fighting men” (Sparta).

It was written for him, and may indicate nothing about what he actually thinks.

  21. #14 Sammy,

What in God’s name are you talking about?
Just because someone has something on a teleprompter doesn’t mean it was written by someone else. That’s one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard.

A lot of people use a teleprompter because the words are easier to read than hand-written notes on a piece of paper that you have to look up and down at. Particularly when it’s a televised event, when it’s important to have a more professional presentation than if you’re just giving a little speech to 47 people at the Elks Lodge in Butte, Montana.

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  22. a teleprompter is a useful tool, obama used it as a crutch, even in appearances in elementary schools,

    narciso (732bc0)

  23. Everybody uses teleprompters nowadays, Sammy. I see no problem. Used to write a speech on paper, then typed it, then index cards now teleprompter. The method of delivery does not mean he did or didn’t write it. However, if he’s smart he’ll let a professional do it.

  25. I’m doing okay narciso, thanks for asking. I don’t go out too much in the heat and humidity though. However, since I was put on the transplant list my wife’s anxiety level has decreased. She knows now it’s just a matter of time.

Walls are a useful tool. So are doors. So are laws. We need the former because it seems democrats won’t enforce the latter. I do know we do not need a million refugees or immigrants a year. That includes H-1B visas. Times change and our immigration and naturalization laws need to change too. Especially when we could be importing the means to our own destruction.

    Rev. HoagieĀ® (0f4ef6)

  26. Any candidate for a major office who tells you he writes his own speeches is lying. They don’t have one speechwriter, they have half a dozen or more.

And what they start with is The Speech. One that covers the candidate from every angle in the best possible way. Then they select parts of it and tweak them for specific audiences. It helps the candidate stay on message at all times, and avoids accusations of inconsistency.

    nk (dbc370)

  27. I think I see what might be coming down the pike: Trump (and whoever is whispering in his ear) wants to create a parallel media echo chamber for his kind of politics; a Bizarro MSM, if you will. Of course, this will be just as dishonest as the original.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  30. 12.So your going for Mcguffin or bluntman?

Always remember. “red queen bad” and “macho grande bad” are not mutually exclusive statements. If you want me to vote for macho grande, you need to give me a reason to think that macho grande is, if not good, at least, not as bad as I think he is.

At this point I might vote for McGuffin, assuming the State of Florida doesn’t manage to keep him off the ballot. Ohio is trying to keep bluntman off the ballot, btw.

    kishnevi (870883)

  31. Who is McGuffin, and Bluntman? I can guess that McGuffin may be McMullin, but I can’t figure out Bluntman, unless it is Gary Johnson, because he smoked blunts.

It’s almost certainly something his advisers prevailed upon him to say. It was carefully phrased, as well.

    Sammy Finkelman (44f942)

  34. When Donald trump uses a teleprompter it mans those are not hsi words. (or, as in the case of his convention acceptance speech, the speech has been reworked again and again, using ideas Donald Trump tossed out or wrote on printed out drafts, with his speechwirters adding ides.

The apology here is out of character, and does not sound like him. It will be more convincing if he repeats it.

    Sammy Finkelman (44f942)

  35. Yes and despite that Washington burned as Athens did millenia before

It didn’t, really. Only government buildings were burned, in retaliation for the Americans burning Toronto. Private property was not touched.

    You figured correctly.
Narciso’s system of names is always allusive, and sometimes elusive.

  37. Any candidate for a major office who tells you he writes his own speeches is lying. They donā€™t have one speechwriter, they have half a dozen or more.

Reagan had speechwriters, but he treated what they produced as a draft, which he would seriously edit and change and make his own before producing the final speech that he’d deliver.

    Not Donald Trump.

Well, apparently now he does. So what? They aren’t his words. They are now, I heard him say them. I don’t see your point. Everybody uses teleprompters whether they write the words themselves or not. Presidents use teleprompters and many write their own words. So what? It doesn’t matter Sammy. If he objected to the content he would not have said the words. What, you think that was the first time he read the script?

    Rev. HoagieĀ® (0f4ef6)

  39. no macho grande means this stygian primary season, red queen is self explanatory, mcmuffin or mccheese, because that’s what he looks like, and you’re right about johnson,

Oh, wait: I donā€™t actually believe that at all.

    Neither do I.

On Sunday, look for the usual suspects to probe exactly what “personal pain” he regrets inflicting, and look for him (or, his surrogates) to be dodging and weaving and saying “Oh for God’s sake I (he) said I’m (he’s) sorry that’s what you’ve been hounding me (him) about isn’t that enough you’re never satisfied how come you aren’t asking Hillary about why she hasn’t said sorry about (fill in the blank) you hold Trump (Trump) to a higher standard you’re so unfair!!1!!111!!!!!11!!”

    L.N. Smithee (b84cf6)

  42. This just proves Trump will never do anything right as far as a nevertrumper bus concerned. It’s like a shrew wife:

    Husband: dinner is late again?

    Shrew: apologise!

H: Why? I just asked if dinner was late.

    S: you never apologise!

H: I do when I have something to apologise for.

S: no you don’t, now apologise because you hurt my feelings!

H: OK, I regret hurting your feelings.

S: No you don’t you don’t! You don’t mean it! You’re a meany that never apologises but if you apologise more and keep repeating it I might start to believe it! When hell freezes over. You awful person you!

But I resent your descent into false tu toque. It’s one of the more annoying Trumpian tactics. Like LBascom’s comment above, and a constant stream of others, from Trump and Trumpkins. 60. Both Post articles are behind a paywall, so unless their exclusive information bears repeating, it’s probably not important. Trump will handle the SUPER SERIOUS CERTIFIED JOURNALIST AND LOLYER QUESTIONS like he always does: better than anyone else because he’s more concerned about how low-information voters and women are going to take the answer then some egghead who can make the arguments but can’t do something as simple as, say, count the number of voters smart enough to be swayed by intellectual argumentation over identity politics. MASSIVE HINT: NOT THAT YUGE. YOU GETTING BEAT BY DA GUY WHO WRITES DA FUNNY PAPERS, GUY. SHOULDA GOTTEN INTO ENGINEERING, OR DID YOU TAKE THE VERBAL JOB BECAUSE YOU COULDN’T MATH RIGHT?
