Roger Ailes Is Reportedly Out (UPDATED)

Filed under: General — Dana @ 2:23 pm

[guest post by Dana]

No need to worry about him ending up in the bread line:

Fox News confirmed to The Daily Beast that Mr. Ailes was out as CEO, following an exclusive report from the Drudge Report.

Drudge reported that Mr. Ailes would receive at least a $40 million buyout from the network.

The news comes hours after a New York Magazine report that Fox News host Megyn Kelly accused the 76-year-old executive of making unwanted sexual advances toward her about 10 years ago when she was a Fox correspondent.

It is being reported that Kelly “described her harassment by Ailes in detail,” which might explain why he’s being shown out the door so quickly.

It was July 6 when Gretchen Carlson got the ball rolling and filed her sexual harassment lawsuit against Ailes.

UPDATE: Howard Kurtz of Fox News is reporting that that Ailes remains on the job:

In a statement, 21st Century Fox said: “Roger is at work. The review is ongoing. And the only agreement that is in place is his existing employment agreement.”

The New York Times reported late Tuesday that Ailes and 21st Century Fox, now managed on a daily basis by Rupert Murdoch’s sons, James and Lachlan Murdoch, “are in the advanced stages of discussions that would lead to the departure of Mr. Ailes as chairman of Fox News.” While it is impossible to predict the outcome of negotiations, I can confirm that such discussions are under way.

Ailes also denies Megyn Kelly’s claims that he sexually harassed her.

  1. Okay then.

  2. Hm, according to CNN’s Brian Selter:

Our current headline: “Conflicting reports: Is Ailes out at Fox?”

    Dana (995455)

  3. Well, that explains why Megyn Kelly was not defending Roger Ailes, which several people there wanted her to.

  4. Roger Ailes apparently used to make sure that all women he propositioned (and he mostly only hired women he thought worth propositioning) were well taken care of financially, and careerwise, whatever happened or didn’t happen between them, meanwhile locking them into ironclad no-lawsuit contracts with penalties for violating non-disparagement clauses.

In the case of Gretchen Carlson he may have made the mistake of thinking it happened too many years before, and it was now safe not to renew her contract. Back when she was removed from “Fox and friends” (because of the behavior of one of her co-hosts, whom Roger Ailes did not want to lose) She had threatened to sue him, but now she lost the show he gave her as an alternative.

This is actually a form of corruption.

Maybe age affected Roger Ailes’ judgment because he should have known he didn’t dare to let her go, but he just didn’t want to have to see her any more.

  6. Interestingly, just last October, Megyn Kelly was singing the praises of Ailes. I suspect Carlson’s lawsuit provided any number of on-air talent the courage to speak out about their boss’s untoward behavior.

So what you’re saying is the women at Fox News are whores. I’m not disagreeing. I’m just processing it.

  9. Kelly read the political winds at Fox and decided to attach herself to the Murdoch boys, who have had it out for Ailes for years. Smart gal, she is.

In terms of the massive buyout, the man created billions, yes, billions, in profit for Fox.

Well, it’s a good thing to know she’s all about doing the right thing, when it becomes convenient.

  28. I think the news at this stage is that:

    1) Nothing has happened so far.

    2) Megyn Kelly has told of something or other that happened to her years in the past and and is co-operating in the Fox News investigation.

    3) Roger Ailes will probably leave. He’s 76 years old anyway.

    4) One problem is that a number of highly important FOX News celebrities have clauses in their contracts that say they can leave if Roger Ailes is no longer in charge. It looks like Roger Ailes put that in to protect himself. Many contracts might need to be re-negotiated and it could cost Fox quite a lot of money.

    Sammy Finkelman (372aad)

  29. Correction: I didn’t listen to the news before writing that. It seemed to be that way, and it would take some time.

Roger Ailes was ousted today, and Rupert Murdoch temporarily took over his job.
