Melania Trump Plagiarizes Michelle Obama 2008 Speech

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:22 pm

Everything you need to know is in this tweet.

The quoted language is indeed from a Michelle Obama 2008 speech. Here is the CNN transcript.

Just click the YouTube link in the tweet, and read along as Melania steals, oh, about 80% of the Michelle Obama speech.

It’s a con. The only question here is whether she was in on the con.

UPDATE:

UPDATE x2: “I wrote it with a little help as possible.”

  1. I hate them.

It’s the speechwriter’s fault, you say? OK. Let’s see what happens to the speechwriter. Let’s see how they react to the whole fucking thing.

They’ll claim it’s all manufactured by the media. Nobody will be fired. Nobody will apologize. The real jerks will be the people who noticed the plagiarism and pointed it out.

If I turn out to be wrong about their reaction, I’ll say so. But I won’t be wrong.

  3. Well, that is unfortunate.

  4. It’s all over the cablers.

Hilarious. And stupid. And lazy. And incredibly piss-poor management for the Great White Dope’s team.

Just show up and read the script, Eva Gabor, eh? Really unfair to her. But the same thing dogged Biden for decades and all but ended his presidential run in the ’80s.

Come on, Donald, grow a pair, be a manager, redeen your wife and use your line: “You’re fired.”

    I did.

Back in the mid-80’s, I once caught a freelance writer who submitted a piece to me for publication at CBS that I knew was plagiarized as I had the book it came from in my desk. Showed him the piece he lifted it from, word for word, turns out he’d subcontracted it to somebody else and was going to split the fee, unbeknownst to me. Reported them to my boss, nailed their asses and blackballed them from any more work at the network. A $500 job cost them thousands in the long run.

  6. Hopefully, President Hillary will solicit Attorney General Lynch to prosecute Melania for plagiarism. Although, she may be able to claim the lack of “intent” defense, punctuated by admitting to be “extremely careless.”

Anyhow, the Titanic is sinking, so let’s continue to rearrange those deck chairs!

  9. They say she was working on this speech for weeks, too.

Maybe she saw gold in Michelle’s speech and dug it. Once a golddigger, always a golddigger.

  11. Hopefully, President Hillary will solicit Attorney General Lynch to prosecute Melania for plagiarism.

Plagiarism isn’t a crime. It’s just a really bad idea to do it to the current first lady, just 8 years later, when lots of people can remember the original.

  12. UPDATE:

    Patterico (5c77c6)

  13. OMG. NBC NEWS reporting Melania tells Matt Lauer in taped interview for Tuesday Today show from plane this evening before she gave it, she wrote the speech herself “with as little help as possible.”

    DCSCA (a343d5)

  14. She has a degree in architecture and speaks four languages, too. Not.

    nk (dbc370)

  15. Melania’s excuse? : “I no speeka de Enguish well. Vhat is dis plagiarism? I had all my shots, no?”

    DCSCA (a343d5)

  16. I don’t believe Mrs. Trump wrote that part of the speech, no more than I believe that Joe Biden wrote his “Why is it that Joe Biden is the first” speech that was similarly, umm, similar (which is to say, practically identical) to a speech made by British Labour politician Neil Kinnock in 1984.

I don’t really care about the plagiarism. It’s the sheer incompetency that annoys me. The person responsible is the guy at the top, regardless of who fed this stuff into the teleprompter for Mrs. Trump to read.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  17. #11 Milhouse,

Plagiarism may not be a crime, but being humorless is a crime.

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  18. To correct something: Biden stole Kinnock’s speech in 1987, early in the 1988 presidential election cycle. It was the “disgrace” that knocked him out of the presidential race that year. That was back when Democrats weren’t completely shameless.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  19. @16. It’s petty. It’s theft. It’s unprofessional. It’s unethical. It’s lazy-azzed… and it reveals character:
    “New York, New York, a helluva town;
    the Bronx is up and the Battery is down;
    the people ride in a hole in the ground;
New York New Yorkkkk, it’s a helluva town.”

And every single time Trump’s people act like idiots, it reinforces that.

Remember how awful the other candidates were to you?

    Great job, folks.

“The cackle, the facial expressions, and the predisposition to dominate males were the first behavioral clues,” wrote Dr. Crumlin, referring to a known scientific fact that spotted hyena society is matriarchal; females are larger.”

    he’s also ****ing a moron.

    Milhouse (5a188d)

  33. WLS did a fisk of Michelle Obama’s original.

Last night’s speech could have been given by Laura Bush, and its text and tone was significantly different from the stump speech she gives at campaign stops. Lets see which Michelle reappears on the campaign trail starting next week.

Next, I was struck by this line:

that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do…

Talk about leading with your chin — I guess they expect everyone to just forget about the campaign finance pledge, and his vow to the left wing of his own party to filibuster the FISA reform. What’s that “bond” made from — clay? I’m sure there are many other examples that could be worked into a commercial.

Isn’t that interesting that the original sounded so out of character for MO that WLS compared it to a Laura Bush speech

    papertiger (c2d6da)

  34. The problem with the speech Biden copied from Kinnock was not that it was copied, but that it wasn’t true. If Biden’s family background had actually been similar to Kinnock’s then it would have been ethical for him to copy Kinnock’s words about it (though probably still not a good idea). But it wasn’t. When he applied Kinnock’s words to his own family he was lying. And that was his real offense.

    Milhouse (5a188d)

  35. If there’s a big enough stink Michelle might be goaded into making a claim on that “my word is my bond” and “hardwork got me here” claptrap.

    papertiger (c2d6da)

  36. Obviously, we do not know whether Mrs. trump was in on this or simply a pawn. However, what is stunning to me is that the plagiarized portion is really no great shakes. Any of us could have written something equally as imploring, endearing, and sentimentally appealing to supporters. It’s not a speech with which you’re trying to win over Democrats or Independentd or Never Trump voters, but it’s a speech to your base. Why in God’s name the need to lift it? Does the campaign have no professionals among them.

Further, it makes everyone who was on stage giving their support to Trump, look like chumps. It doesn’t matter that they were unaware. That they threw their weight behind him is enough.

    Dana (995455)

  37. Someone as pretty as Melania? I would gladly sit in her orbit and listen as she read the dictionary.

I wish she had on that stage last night.

There’s just gotsta be an unseen hand at work in our country and world. There is no other plausible explanation.

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  38. Someone has to get fired over this, very swiftly and very publicly. Otherwise, Trump is toast. If he was n on it, what a perfectly lousy thing to do to one’s wife.

    Dan (995455)

  39. One way or another, sadly, DT needs civil unrest in Cleveland to distract from this debacle. Are the lefties smart enough to let this dumpster fire burn without trying to light another?

Does DT have it in him to start a “false flag” operation in the streets?

Ain’t it great that this is the kind of thinking our polity now invites?

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  40. There is a possibility, however remote, that she was sabotaged by Never Trumpers. I’m not saying that’s likely, but since we don’t know what happened, it’s a good idea to not jump to conclusions.

It will be really interesting to find out if she did this on her own. It seems unlikely she would have done it on purpose, but she may have watched first lady speeches and did it without intending to. When I’ve taken college English classes, they’ve warned us about unintentionally incorporating material this way, based on heavy research before writing a particular assignment. It can happen.

Likewise, it could have happened that way for her speechwriter(s), but terribly unprofessional of them if so.

This will be a headline tomorrow and that sucks. It is what it is.

It seems hard to imagine that speechwriters or Mrs. Trump would have done this intentionally with the world watching them. If so, well, they deserve the criticism they will get. But let’s not jump to a firm conclusion yet.

We can do that in a day or too when more facts are known.

WHY, IF ONE OF THOSE SCOUNDRELS WAS ABLE TO MAKE ‘NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP OR LET YOU DOWN’ SOUND SINCERE AND WELCOMING, WHO KNOWS WHAT NEFARIOUS TRICKS HE MIGHT GET UP TO NEXT?

  99. @ gbear (#73): Oh, I’d agree the Kennedys were — are — shameless. They were the Clintons’ role-model. You can find individual and influential shameless Democrats going back way before the Kennedys, though, going back all the way to Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson.

But even in 1988, there were still enough principled Democrats — Democrats who thought Biden’s plagiarism (especially given his near-expulsion from law school for the same sin in the past) was a big deal — to instantly derail his presidential campaign. Obviously he continued to be re-elected to the Senate; by 2008 he was arguably the most experienced Democrat in the primary; and obviously he hung around long enough to become Obama’s impeachment insurance (because Joe Biden really is dumb as a post).

But in today’s Democratic Party their nominee can literally give away the nation’s secrets to our enemies, without either her or her supporters having to much as the decency to blush about it. That was not true in 1988.

This is so. It indicates a tremendous, dangerous decline in the country. It’s got to stop.

  101. Can’t Melania claim the parody exception?

All the #neverTrump people call Trump’s campaign a joke.

To me the #neverTrump people are like Sir Alec Guinness from “The Bridge on the River Kwai”.

In their minds they are building a proper bridge, on principle, with no concern as to whether they are aiding the enemy.

Major Clipton: The fact is, what we’re doing could be construed as…collaboration with the enemy. Perhaps even as treasonable activity. Must we work so well? Must we build them a better bridge than they could have built for themselves?

Colonel Nicholson: If you had to operate on Saito, would you do your job or let him die?…Would you have it be said that our chaps can’t do a better job? You’re a fine doctor, Clipton, but you’ve a lot to learn about the army.

Colonel Nicholson: One day the war will be over. And I hope that the people who use who use this bridge in years to come will remember how it was built and who built it. Not a gang of slaves, but soldiers, British soldiers, Clipton, even in captivity.

Colonel Saito: Do not speak to me of rules. This is war! This is not a game of cricket!

  103. As I posted on the other thread:

I have read elsewhere that both speeches are based on a list of “Habits of Highly Effective People” by someone named Covey, and that both speeches use the same or similar language, and the same points, in the same order, as Covey.

So basically both speeches cribbed from the same source material, and that is why they are so similar.

  104. This has the text of many speeches delivered the first day of the Republican National Convention, but not taht of Melania Trump or Mike Flynn:

  105. .If Cruz can’t beat someone as bad as Trump is portrayed do we really want him in charge of the country?

Ah, the fallacy that attracting votes is somehow related to the qualities needed to govern. That elections are actually a sort of ordeal meant to test for that ability, and thus whoever wins has thereby demonstrated his fitness.

    Milhouse (5a188d)

  106. Thank goodness the anti-Trump people showing us why trump is bad and they are the smart ones. They’re debating key issues–like her speech! Not wasting time on Iran, ISIS, Debt or military readiness.

Yes, the anti-Trump GOP “pros” buy into media frenzies about non-issues, as docilely as they debated the fine points of Seamus on Mitt’s car.

    Harcourt Fenton Mudd (5e0a82)

  107. And when did Trump say anything intelligent on Iran, ISIS, Debt or military readiness? Or substantive even? It’s all bombast, wind and glitz.
