Baton Rouge Shooter a Nation of Islam Member Who Ranted About “Crackers” and Alton Sterling

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:18 am

Surprise, surprise:

A Youtube account operated by Gavin Eugene Long and discovered by The Daily Caller reveals key insight into what might have motivated the 29-year-old black man who killed three Baton Rouge police officers Sunday morning.

Videos on Long’s account show that he was a former Nation of Islam member. He also ranted against “crackers” and made references to Alton Sterling, the black man killed by police in Baton Rouge on July 5.

It’s “very hard to untangle the motivations” that propelled this guy to shoot and kill police officers.

We may never know his true motivation.

  1. The dog trainer should read your blog. They completely missed the Nation of Islam connection!

  7. I think the killer was very clear to say that he had nothing to do with ISIS. And he also absolved all other organizations.

“Yeah, I was also a Nation of Islam member, I’m not affiliated with them,” he said. “They try to put you with ISIS or some other terrorist group. No. I’m affiliated with the spirit of justice.

“Nothing else. Nothing more, nothing less,” he added….

in a July 9 letter sent to The LanceScurv Show (the podcast of the self-proclaimed “boldest man on the net”).

“I just want everyone to know that if anything may happen to me or with me, I am NOT affiliated with anybody, any group, nationality, association, religion, corporation, business, etc,” Setepenra said. “Yes I am apart of many, groups, businesses, and even a different nationality (Sovereign) but I am not affiliated. I Just want to make this crystal clear.”

  8. More from the Daily Beast:

He published 3 books on Amazon using the pen name of Cosmo Setepenra. One thing he boasted of was his loss of 80 pounds when he was 16. He also claimed to be on a book tour.

He claimed (truthfully) to have been a member of the U.S. military, and this correct down to his schieving the rank of sergeant (E-5)and being stationed at Fort Pendleton, altough he maybe wasn’t in the Marines as many years as he said (that’s not clear) He was in Iraq from June 2008 to January 2009 and had also been stationed in Japan.

He lied about having an Associate’s degree from Central Texas College and claimed he dropped out of Clark Atlanta University because of a “spiritual revelation” that led him to sell or goe ve away all his possessions and go to Africa with two suitcases. He actually dropped out of the University of Alabama.

He said he was a Sovereign citizen, it sounds on the basis of a claim to have joined the Indians, specifically the United Washitaw de Dugdahmoundyah Mu’ur Nation, Mid-West Washita Tribes, whatever that is.

When there was some news about the military misplacing bubonic plague samples, he was against vaccination but for arresting the people who have the disesase. This was posted under the name Alim El-Bey.

    He was pro-polygamy.

He praised the killing of the 5 police officers in Dallas. Said he was being stalked by theU.s. government. And put himself forward as a spiritual adviser.

  9. Also from David Clarke, his interview with Don Lemon.

Just goes to show how the media are carrying the water for Black Lives Matter and the President. Actively working to confuse the situation and not be critical of anti-cop rhetoric.

  11. I would have actually preferred last-place also-rans such as George Pataki and Jim Gilmore to Donald Trump as our nominee, but this holier-than-thou “conservative” crowd which would rather see Hillary occupy the Oval Office than Trump is just setting the table for more dystopian left wing craziness during the next four years.

  15. Of course the media are blaming it on his stint in the military. And actually, he got an honorable discharge, which suggests that he did all right there. Maybe he needed and thrived on the order and guidance of the military life: He only fell apart when he left.

  16. it is striking how they don’t give the expert in the field, the actual main lead, you have higgins, who couldn’t find sand at the beach, with a magnifying glass, and rubin from the dog trainer,

None of this is meant in any way to preclude holding this guy to account.

  24. Biden and Obama;s statements yesterday on Baton Rogue: (links will stop working Jan 20, 2017)

https://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2016/07/17/president-obama-attack-law-enforcement-baton-rouge (Obama’s has video of him speaking, but gives the text of Biden’s statement first.

It’s been said this is the first really pro-police statement he’s made.

“I condemn, in the strongest sense of the word, the attack on law enforcement in Baton Rouge. For the second time in two weeks, police officers who put their lives on the line for ours every day were doing their job when they were killed in a cowardly and reprehensible assault. These are attacks on public servants, on the rule of law, and on civilized society, and they have to stop….

….”We may not yet know the motives for this attack, but I want to be clear: there is no justification for violence against law enforcement. None. These attacks are the work of cowards who speak for no one. They right no wrongs. They advance no causes. The officers in Baton Rouge; the officers in Dallas – they were our fellow Americans, part of our community, part of our country, with people who loved and needed them, and who need us now – all of us – to be at our best.

    Sammy Finkelman (643dcd)

  25. One of the officers killed had posted something on Facebook about the hatred or unfriendly attitude toward police that was prevalent in Baton Rouge, after the killings of the Dallas police officers:
