Fox News Reports Attack In Nice, France Leaves At Least 75 People Dead

Filed under: General — Dana @ 5:51 pm

[Obviously, information is subject to change with time.]

Fox News is reporting that at least 75 people have been killed and 50 injured in an “apparent terror attack” in Nice, France. A truck loaded with guns and grenades was driven full speed into a large crowd of people at a Bastille Day event.

French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said the truck driver had been “neutralized” and an investigation would confirm whether he had acted alone. The Paris prosecutor’s office announced that it was opening an anti-terrorism investigation into the Nice attack.

The attack happened at around 10:30 p.m. local time. A local government official told Fox News that the truck was driving full speed when it hit the crowd.

Here are a few accounts from eye-witnesses:

“A fraction of a second later, an enormous white truck came along at a crazy speed, turning the wheel to mow down the maximum number of people,” he said. “I saw bodies flying like bowling pins along its route. Heard noises, cries that I will never forget.”

Allemand said people took shelter in a nearby restaurant, where he continued to hear people shouting for missing family members. He ventured out and saw bodies, blood and body parts all along the road.

“This evening, it was horror,” Allemand concluded.

[…]

Another witness, Wassim Bouhlel, told the Associated Press that he saw the truck drive into the crowd, then witnessed the driver emerge with a gun and start shooting.

“There was carnage on the road,” Bouhlel said. “Bodies everywhere.”

Reports say that bodies were scattered along the road for over a mile.

President Obama released a statement condemning “what appears to be a horrific terrorist attack in Nice, France which killed and wounded dozens of innocent civilians”.

  12. When we have a horrific event here in America, our elite like to tell us uncultured bumpkins that we need to discuss “hard topics” like racism, poverty, the prevalence of guns, etc. Will the elites look at what is happening in France — not just this, but the Paris attacks, Charlie Hebdo, etc. — and admit that we need to discuss what happens when you fail so miserably at assimilating immigrants from cultures far different from your own? And will the elites here take note of what is happening in Europe and try to apply some of those lessons to how we treat our own unassimilated immigrants? Or is this one of those “pay no attention to the larger picture” moments that come up whenever events run outside of their narrative?

    JVW (eabb2a)

  13. Obama is hoping that the number of victims with bullets in their bodies exceeds those crushed by the truck. And if not, he’s hoping CNN gets the memo before they air the body count. And he’s already scoring the killed terrorist as a victim of gun violence.

It’s all about the narrative, and Obama will figure out some way to make this work for HIM. Or so he believes.

Seventy-five references to HIMSELF in his remarks at the Dallas memorial.

Meanwhile, James Taylor is not returning Kerry’s phone calls, so the State Department is casting about for another answer to this puzzling development.

  14. Surely, that a truck was used to intentionally kill, will help convince those like President Obama and French officials who use these horrible attacks to push the gun control narrative, that the problem isn’t trucks or guns, it’s the ideology driving the truck and training the gun.

He’s focusing attention on another terrorist attack, which is one of his strengths in the public’s mind. What’s so hard to understand about that? It seems pretty savvy.

No, it doesn’t, actually. In case you’ve been on a desert island for the last six months, there’s a steady stream of attacks, murders, tragedies, etc. — every week. This one is no different in principle from a half dozen others.

Unless you think the job of a presidential aspirant is to let ISIS and its fans set his agenda.

I repeat, where’s the connection: What, he’s going to spend tomorrow afternoon planning a SEAL team incursion to retaliate against radical Islam? Hell, no — he’s have another big steak with the prawn cocktail, sit up until 3:00 a.m. reading publicity about himself and plotting revenge, and making mean tweets. He’s not going to actually address terrorism.

@ Denver Guy, who instead proposed (#24):

Simple, Beldar. He was probably leaning toward Pence. But there was a backlog amongst his supporters before the attack in Nice, with many urging him to choose Sessions or Flynn.

Trump is probably considering the backlash in light of the attack in Nice, and weighing his final choice.

To which I again say, nonsense. Tell me how one more terrorism attack somewhere in the western world has anything to do with the difference between vice presidential picks.

If he wants someone who arguably has a “record fighting terrorism,” he should pick Christie. That ain’t in the works.

But my point is: If he’s shallow and pliable enough to let one day’s news cycle decide a choice this significant, then he’s an even bigger clown than I thought. (Which I would have thought nearly impossible.)

The newspaper headlines this morniing say 80 (Daily News) and “at least” 80. (New York Post) The New York Times, ever careful, says “scores.” The Wall Street Journal, in its headline, gives no number.

The earliest reports said 30, but probably more. The truck was riddled with bullets, so maybe afew were killed by the French police. (In Dallas, the police did not dare to fire very much and they couldn’t assume that a man with a rifle, even in camouflage gear, was the shooter, because some of the protesters were there with long guns. It was actually the second attack in 15 months on the Dallas police but the last one did not make national news because nobody was killed besides the shooter. also, he was white.)

This is not traditional Islam. Why should that be so hard to comprehend? Was any of this going on sixty years ago?

The New York Times also leads in one story with a Muslim victim in the second paragraph “weeping over the body of his mother and imploring Allah to accept her into heaven.”

    Sammy Finkelman (372aad)

  69. It started just after the fireworks show ended, which is about one hour after nightfall. The truck travelled about 1.3 miles, or more than 2 kilometers, along the Promenade des Anglais, before it was stopped. The driver was aiming for the densest part of the crowd, adjusting his aim and zig-zagging as he went along knocking people over like bowling pins.

When the truck was stopped, he got out with a gun but was gunned down/ He may or may not have had other weapons in the truck, but only used taht one gun.

There had been a rope barrier of some kind keeping vehicles out, but that only works against people who do not intend to hurt people.

On occasion, for a given value of Muslim. At different times, Sunni and Shi’a Arab paramilitaries have been accused of summarily executing Iraqis for having the wrong surname.

Take your point that the victims of Islamist or Islamically-inspired terrorism/militancy are often, if not usually, Muslims. The only non-predominantly-Muslim states that seem to suffer more from these movements are probably India and Nigeria.

Breaking News: Suspected terrorist attack using a truck in Nice, France on Bastille Day. AT LEAST 30 DEAD.

I wasn’t completely clear how the truck was used. This was sometime after I heard it.

The number of dead was later given as 77 and 80 and at least 80.

The death toll has now been updated by a French offical to 84, of which 10 were under 18.

202 were injured, 52 seriously and 25 remain in intensive care. y weren’t just there to watch fireworks — they were there to watch fireworks on Bastille Day. Can you imagine if there was an attack against an American target on the 4th of July? The fireworks are what’s important, not the dsay, and when do they do fireworks shows?

Can you imagine if there was an attack upon Muslims by westerners on any one of the 329 Muslim holy days on the calendar?

They make a great deal out of it – and I suppose you could say that makes it more of hate crime.

I think the day was picked simply because that’s when there was an opportunity to run over a lot of people – that’s when you had a big crowd of people in an area temporarily limited to pedestrians — so no barriers to vehicular traffic were installed.

  95. I think the murderer didn’t have his plan completely scoped out. When the vehicle was stopped he got out and fired and/or was firing from inside through a window. There was no opportunity to use more than one rifle. If he had anyone waiting for him, they weren’t where his truck was stopped.

Obozo and Hillary! will now tell us that we need to ban trucks…

No, discourage assembling large numbers of pedestrians in areas usually open to traffic without creating physical barriers to vehicular traffic that are more than just paper or rope. That they’ll probably do actually.

  97. Someone in French LE or perhaps a bien garcon avec rifle probably realized the MO and went 12-oclock frontal on the vehicle forcing the driver to stop short of a rendezvous point and start firing. The men-on-street-muslims interviewed probably re-worked themselves into the remains (living and dead) of the crowd once they realized the gun truck wasnt meeting them downstream.

I think they had plenty of reasons to try to stop the truck as soon as possible without thinking that maybe the truck had a destination. I think the guns weer there because the killer didn’t know, as he planning this, what he was going to do,or perhaps he hoped more men would be involved.

The French police and the FBI are working overtime trying to make as ironclad a case as they can against the truck.

He was already at his destination: the Promenade des Anglais is the great corniche in Nice, and if you want to find a crowd going there is a nobrainer, especially if there’s been a big public celebration nearby. Just like you might expect a big crowd in Fifth Avenue in New York, although the PdA is seven miles long, starting at the airport, and goes along the Oceanside, so Ocean Drive in Miami Beach might be a closer parallel.

They’d better hurry. The Truck could transform at any moment.

  102. 107. Not coincidental at all, that the “Truck Skirt” was introduced in the first term of the Obama administration – wouldnt the truck skirt become a full robe or veil on a Transformer?

    urbanleftbehind (5eecdb)

  103. @kishnevi urbanleftbehind speculated that the driver was going to rendezvous with some other men who would then take the weapons in the truck and begin firing, and that “someone in French LE or perhaps a bien garcon avec rifle” realized this and that’s why they went all out to stop the truck.

    Q. And how would they know there were weapons hidden inside the truck?

The wife has been taken in for question, per an Egyptian paper

YYes, the Inspector Clouseaus did it, over the neighbor;s objection. The killer was in the process of a bitter divorce and didn’t have custody of his children. He had also just lost his job. A neighbor, where he lived separarately from hie wife, maybe his ex-wife now, said the smell of alcohol was on his breath and he used to drink even during Ramadan, and his eyes looked terrible (meaning a stare or something)

He has no known connection to any terrorist group, and was not on any list. Nothinbg has surfaced. Maybe someone did reach out to him, or he reached out to someone.

It could be maybe yes, he felt his life had ended and he wanted to commit suicide, but accomplisg something at the same time.

  105. The neighbors’ objections. Plural neighbors of the wife.

  106. Some notes on the massacre:

    1. The only functional weapon the killer had, besides the truck, was a 7.65-mm pistol, which he first used about 1,000 feet before he was stopped. He never got out of the truck nut was killed while inside. The weapons they found inside were 3 replica or toy guns, including a fake Kalashnikovv rfile, and a grenade, also inert or fake. The pistol was apparently obtained illegally. and he may not have been able to get anything more.

    2. The killer was notable for the fact that he used to travel around Nice by bicycle. I have sen nothing to contradict the notion that he did not own a car. He had gotten his truck driver’s license only two years ago. Was it all preparation for this? He lost his job because he crashed into some vehicles, claiming that he fell asleep. Was it really an accident, or was he practicing? He also later used to drive a truck often parked near where he lived, but the company whose name is on that truck to which that truck belonged to said he was not an employee, but somebody else was, but the owner would not give a reporter his name.

    3. He had gotten into an altercation with another driver and hit him with wooden pallet or something like that and received a six month suspended sentence with orders to report to the police once a week, which he was doing. He did not lose his job because of that.

    4. He had been in other (unspecified) trouble with the law dating back to 2010. No word on whether he ever wa sin jail. He left Tuniaia in 2004, and was last back 4 years ago, i.e. in 2012. His family and his city were secular. He had been taken to some doctor for crazy people and given some drugs but had long ago stopped taking them. He tended to get violent, drank a lot, ate pork, was involved with many women – and complained about them on Facebook – never attended mosques, didn’t fast on Ramadan, in short just about nothing that a serious Moslem would do. It is possible he did sign on to one thing: that if he killed lots of people, all of his sins would be forgiven.

    5. All the killer’s paperwork was in order when he rented that refrigerated truck, and taht might mean something more than just his license. It was rented five days before the attack for four days. He didn’t return it that last day. He drove to where the truck was parked by bicycle and put the bicycle inside. Sounds like the person going to be executed eho saved a piece of pie for later.

    6. The killer appeared to be wearing some kind of blue uniform when he was doing his deed, which could indicate some planning.

    7. It was not done all at once, but it was really aseries of separate massacres and the first one didn’t take place for some distance. The barriers weer alottle more sbstantial than paper or rope, but the truck went oover thenmm, and , at first was chaed on foot by police. Then he accelerated

    8. He drove down the way by which people were heading his way to exit. There were people there who spoke all kinds of different languages, they were shouting but it was like a Tower of Babel, so the people seeing people run in their direction didn’t know waht was going on.

    9. Many people ran to the beach over an embankment and others went inside open shops/ Some people were missed by 10 feet or 20 inches. Altogether, approximately 1% of the crowd was killed or injured.
