Newt: Trump and I Are Like a Couple of Pirates

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:58 am

As the Presumptive Con Man readies a Friday 11 a.m. announcement of his Mini-Con Man, Newtie is saying the Trumpster is like a pirate — and so is Newtie:

Look, in many ways Donald Trump is like a pirate. He’s outside the normal system, he gets things done, he’s bold, he’s actually like a figure out of a movie. In a lot of ways, my entire career has been a little bit like a pirate. I’ve taken on the establishment in both parties, [I’m] very prepared to fight in the media.

Arrrrrr.

Oh, Newtie. Don’t ever change.

‘he’s just in over his head’ they plundered auto, healthcare natural resources, extorted banks, corrupted journalism even more then it was before, ransacked reporters recorders,
let veterans die abandoned, made our foodstuffs near unaffordable,

  12. Trump’s family wants Newt Gingrich. The idea for Mike Pence is coming from Donald Trump’s newly hired political aides. I think their big argument is that Pence is younger than Donald Trump (by 13 years) It is not at all Trump’s idea.

I see picking Pence as maybe more possible than before because Trump already listened to these political aides in scheduling his announcment of his vice presidential choice before the convention, instead of what he first wanted, which was during the convention, which was last done in 1980.

The deadline of 11 am is keyed to Pence. Pence needs to know by noon whether or not he wll run for Governor because that’s the deadline for withdrawing. I would suspect a good lawyer could see it to that he wouldn’t be prevented from being on the ballot for voce president in Indiana. This can’t really be an obstacle.

Newt Gingrich said it’s down to him or Pence. Trump’s plane was stuck in Indianapolis yesterday, so Gingrich (and later Sessions) flew in. Gingrich came aboard a private plane provided bu Sean Hannity. Christie was last seen in person by members of Trump’s family on Tuesday, although Trump called him on Wednesday.

I think Trump is truly undecided. Gingrich has been listed as a speaker at the convention for Wednesday, and there is a separate listing for the vice presidential candidate, but that probably does not mean at all that Trump had picked somebody else. I think it means that Gingrich will be a speaker on Wednesday night whether or not he is named as the vice-preidential candidate.

That may be somebody in Trump’s campaign trying to affect the decision. Hannity, we know, is for Gingrich. Sheldon Adelson, who was big backer of Newt Gingrich in 1992, is also reported to have bene lobbying for Newt Gingrich.

  14. Newt Gingrich is many things, but only with Trump does he seem “a safe choice.”

I’d hate to see what Trump would call a “loose cannon.”

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  15. Newt Gingrich would also improve the quality of the vice presidential candidate Hillary Clinton picks. It wouldn’t then be somebody who could not hold his (or her) own in a debate.

  26. There have been surprises in the composition of the British government. Borisa Johnson was going to be the likely next Prime Minister, then his close associate, Michael Gove said no, Boris Johnson is not suitable, and he himself also isn’t, he would instead, then Boris Johnson dropped out of the race, and it looked like he was out of important politics.

They were going to hold first a vote pick the top two and then have Conservative party members vote on which of the two. Gove loses. It’s between Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom. Then Andrea Leadsom says something about her beinbg abetter choice because she is a mother, then says she was pushed into it, then a transcript apparentgly reveals it was more volunteered then she drops out and suddenly it is over.

The Theresa May names Boris Johnson Foreign Minister.

Nigel Farage says he is retiring from politics because he doesn’t want all the attention – then he’s suddenly going to be a speaker at the Republican National Convention in the United States.

  44. From the WSJ article entitled Donald Trump Signals Mike Pence Is Choice for Running Mate, GOP Official Says:

In picking Mr. Pence, Mr. Trump would be going with his head rather than his heart, taking a more cautious course in choosing his running mate.

To which I respond: B*llsh*t. This is not about head and heart. It’s about ego — which in Trump’s case is bigger than head, heart, Trump Tower, and all of New York State and its values. Gingrich’s ego wouldn’t also fit on the bandwagon, and Trump won’t permit someone who could steal a single bit of attention.

Pence will be a nonentity for purposes of this election. So too will be Julian Castro as Hillary!’s Veep nominee, but she’ll do a better job with the roll-out. (Trump’s fumbling this one horribly in almost every respect, from timing to security.)

  47. Mike Pence done so good on the religious freedom, and also he has gravitas. He did the expansion of medicare in subservience to the obamacare, which was shameful. Also he showed flexibility and a modicum of wisdom in promptly recognizing the foolishness of his religious freedom law, and he done so good on amending that.

All in all Mike Pence is having a very exciting summer, and he’ll help us make America great again by doing vice president for Mr. Trump.

    happyfeet (a037ad)

  48. This is what I heard on the radio this afternoon:

At the 3 pm WCBS (880 AM) radio news: CBS News has confirmed that Mike Pence is the pick.

Later, on WOR 710 maybe 3:30: Sean Hannity names about 8 or 10 news organziations that say it is pence: CNN, Fox News Indianapolis, The Los Angeles Dog Trainer, CBS… He finds it hard to believe it isn’t Pence with all these news organizations independently saying it was Pence. (He didn’t call it the Dog Trainer, Patterico does)

WOR Sean Hannity show about 4:15: Sean Hannity is interviewing Newt Gingrich. From what I hear, it sounds like Newt Gingrich has heard nothing from Trump. He admires the methodical way Trump went about picking a Vice President when he interviewed him.

The Vice Presidency “isn’t worth a bucket of warm p*ss,” according to one of its past occupants — one who’s now remembered for almost nothing except that quote, in fact.

Congratulations to Gov. Pence, though. As a hedge against the very small possibility that Trump/Pence will prevail over Clinton/Castro, but the subsequent and very large possibility that Trump would either be impeached and convicted, or else that Trump would suffers some fatal ego accident or otherwise die while POTUS, I can think of a whole lot of worse choices than Mike Pence, many of whom have been floated as serious possibilities whom Trump might have chosen.

Drama, even melodrama (which I’d say more apt), must have a second act, and then subsequent acts, to sustain the audience’s interest.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/15/us/politics/mike-pence-donald-trump-vice-president.html

Mr. Trump’s advisers told national Republican officials that they were preparing to make an announcement with Mr. Pence, and people close to Mr. Pence notified his political allies that they expected him to be chosen, according to numerous people with knowledge of the conversations, who were not authorized to discuss them publicly.

n Thursday afternoon, television stations in Indiana and New York reported that Mr. Pence had flown from Indiana to Teterboro Airport, arriving in New Jersey late Thursday afternoon for the planned Friday morning event in Midtown Manhattan.

    On the other hand:

Paul Manafort, the chairman of the Trump campaign, said at midday Thursday that the campaign had not notified anyone of a final decision.

”We have not been reaching out to Washington to tell them to prepare for any particular candidate,” Mr. Manafort said by phone.

Washington = Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell?

    The Wall Street Journal writes:

Trump campaign officials and Mr. Trump himself on Thursday night refused to confirm the choice, but senior GOP officials and Pence supporters said they were told to prepare for Mr. Pence to be introduced.

So it’s coming from lower ranking Trump campaign people, Republican national Committee people who were told it was Pence, and people associated with Pence. It was probably a tentative decision.
