3 Suicide Bombers Attack Ataturk Airport In Istanbul

Filed under: General — Dana @ 4:28 pm

[guest post by Dana]

It is now being reported that three suicide bombers attacked the Ataturk airport in Istanbul. Reports are early yet, so they’re likely to change, but at this time, here is what the Washington Post is reporting:

Three attackers with suicide vests detonated their explosives at the entrance of Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport, killing at least 28 people and wounding 60 more, Turkish officials said Tuesday night.

The attack is likely to raise tensions in Turkey, which has been the target of multiple attacks by militants in recent months. Istanbul’s airport is one of the busiest in the world, but the tourism industry here has been crippled by the country’s recent violence.

Police manning a checkpoint at the airport’s international terminal shot at the attackers as they approached, a Turkish official said. The attackers then detonated their bombs and were also killed.

The majority of the casualties are Turkish citizens, “but there are foreign nationals” both killed and wounded, the official said.

US flights have been suspended.

Although no one has officially claimed responsibility, there is this:

A senior U.S. counterterrorism official told NBC News the Istanbul attack “fits the ISIS profile, not PKK.”

“There are only two groups capable of carrying out such a large-scale attack. This does not fit the PKK profile, they go after Turkish targets, not international targets,” the official said.

Another senior U.S. intelligence official said the attack fits ISIS, adding that “our long summer of discontent has just begun.”

  2. I can’t believe Right Wing extremists in America went to Turkey to do this. It always seems to be the Right-Wing Extremists. Remember Timothy McVeigh!?

This is so Timothy McVeigh, no other type or class of person does this. /s

  3. So now the question is how will the gun grabber leftists blame this on the NRA and innocent gun owners..

BTW, not to be flip about it… but wasn’t that airport posted as a gun and bomb free-zone?

  4. Important notes:

    1) They have suicide vests. These are not easy to make. Only a very skilled bombmaker can make them. Hamas doesn’t have them. (Israel killed their bombmaker years ago) ISIS does. Boko HAaram in Nigeria has them too. al shabab may not have any any more..

    2) It is becoming apparent that security screening at airprorts is of limited utility. terrorists have now started ecploding bombs at points befopre the screening.

  5. it’s not a terribly well maintained facility, from what officials told richard engel, there may be up to 35 members, 5-7 cells involved, who were slipped in before the end of ramadan,

  6. Quote from John Kerry:

“We don’t have a clue who is responsible, but it is likely Christian terrorists and their NRA sponsors are responsible. We must get guns off the streets in the US. That will solve all the world’s problems. I have discussed this is detail with President Obama, and that is both his opinion and the opinion of the State Department. Former Secretary of State Clinton, when asked her opinion, indicated that a YouTube video put out by the NRA and the Republican Party is also partly responsible. We will be able to provide more detailed information after we get a clue.”

  8. It may be a force retention move by ISIS. There are many reports of ISIS rape and plunder rats, particularly ‘foreign’ born rape and plunder rats, deserting and attempting to flee. Many of them arrived via Turkey, with a wink and a nod from the same Turks who cheerfully bought plundered oil from ISIS*. It would make sense for ISIS to attempt to stimulate the Turks to kill the deserters draining ISIS ranks.

I hope the tactic succeeds – the more rats killed within Raqaa and Mosul the better.

*Turks affected by the bombings should seek to hold Erdogan responsible. After all, Turks provided ISIS with the money to buy the bombs. Those are Turk chickens returning to roost in the airport.

  9. yes, there’s some of the frog and the scorpion, but the battlefield has moved from raqqua to london, paris, brussels, orlando, los angeles,

  10. Loretta Lynch needs to get to the bottom of this! Why did these evil suicide vests launch this brazen attack on three members of the “religion of peace?” What were their motives? Were they mired in poverty? Were they right-wing extremist vests? Were the vests Islamophobic or homophobic? Should we consider banning AR-15 rifles?

In the meantime, we tax-paying, law-abiding citizens need to sit quietly in the corner, waiting for our government to tell us what to think and what to do.

  13. Kerry hasn’t had a clue since he mistook a Bangkok brothel for Christmas in Cambodia. His three self-promoted Purple Hearts are yet another disgrace. But he may be an improvement over his predecessor, which is a measure of how far below sea level we have plunged.

  17. Loose gun laws, girls in skimpy outfits, and fancy-boy homos prancing around in public, which is only part of the explanation. These Turkish apostates were attempting to fly and if Allah had intended men to fly he would have given them magic carpets.

  18. To be as fair as possible to Kerry, if I was in his shoes, I might also be saying “We don’t yet know who did it.” But when I said it, it would mean, “Although we’re pretty sure it was a jihadist group, we don’t yet know which one it was.” When Kerry says it… well, since the man isn’t stupid, I’m pretty sure he also knows it was a jihadist group. But since he’s ALSO a veteran* liar, I’m pretty sure he won’t admit to knowing that.

    * Heh.

  22. “but the battlefield has moved from raqqua to london, paris, brussels, orlando, los angeles”

Stringent vermin control in Syria and Iraq does tend to move ISIS rats to areas practicing pattycake vermin control but the tried and true ME vermin control measures do tend to reduce total numbers, active recruiting and, most importantly, recidivism. We might hope for a quicker end to the sieges of Raqaa and Mosul but thorough eradication is more important.

*. It would make sense for ISIS to attempt to stimulate the Turks to kill the deserters draining ISIS ranks.

The way to do that would be to get Turks to shoot people trying to cross the Turkish border, which they are doing already, in part thanks to pressure from Europe for no more refugees. Turkey is busy denying that that’s what they are doing, also.

If that’s ISIS strategy, did they also close the Jordanian border by sending a suicide bomber to the border? It’s been closed for a week now, as of a few days ago, and 64,000 people are/were on the Syrian side of the border without food and with very little water.

After all, Turks provided ISIS with the money to buy the bombs.

    Buy the bombs?

Who did they buy them from?

    Iran?

    What is your theory?

As for deserters, they can desert in Iraq, if they are careful.

Al Qaeda message out telling jihadists to kill white men so the US government can’t miss the message by calling jihad “hate crimes”…

That sounds like a dig at ISIS, since the last one in Orlando could be mistaken for a ordinary hate crime. And they’re giving another reason: it targets people whom the leaders in Washington do not identify with. al Qaeda is saying, in effect: “Don’t do what ISIS tells you. Listen to us, instead. We’re the experts. This last thing was a stupid tactical error by the JV squad.”

    Sammy Finkelman (c41e9f)

  30. If the obama administration cannot tell who, what or why Orlando occurred when the perpetrator called 911 AND a TV station, how can we expect they would know who was responsible in Turkey? It may always be a mystery to obama and his cohorts.

  31. Secretary of State @John Kerry on The Alamo: “We’re still trying to ascertain what happened and who did it.”

Secretary of State @John Kerry on Istanbul: “I am poring through the financial statements of all the widows and will ascertain which is the richest soon.”

    nk (dbc370)

  32. 30. ISIS also did an attack in Lebanon, on motocycles, so they may be tryng to seal the ebanese border, too.

This would be motivated, at least in part, by the desire to commit new atrocities in Syria (not stop deserters).
