Historic House Sit-In Is Historic

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:33 am

The Democrats are conducting a historic sit-in which is historic. They are trying to take guns from Americans without due process, and so this is a civil rights issue, you see. (I have already discussed how Republicans have their own bills that address the concerns raised by Democrats, but in a more responsible way that does not step on due process. If the government has you on a list, it should know why it put you there — and it should not take long to explain those reasons to a judge.) The ACLU opposes the Democrat proposals. But all you’ll hear from Big Media is that John Lewis is involved, and it’s historic. Historic, I say!

What’s it really about? Fundraising.

  1. Squirrel! Don’t look at Islam, look at those scary squirrels armed with assault weapons of war. Save lives – vote down the 2nd amendment, abandon the concept of due process.

The Islamic terrorist you save may live to behead your children.

  5. Don’t look at all those Black Americans shot to death in the inner cities!

Patricia, are you suggesting blacks are not responsible enough to have the right to own firearms? Racist, I denounce you!

  6. We have officially “transitioned” into a banana republic.
Democrat members of the institution formed by the founding fathers to provide a forum for debate and deliberation have abandoned any hope of appealing to reason and logic, and instead have decided to endorse a species of mob rule.
Why are leftists so enamored with tactics reeking of force and coercion?

  12. If the government has you on a list, it should know why it put you there — and it should not take long to explain those reasons to a judge.

That wouldn’t have prevented Omar Mateen from buying his guns, since he was off the list, so the Democratic
proposal is that anyone who ever was on the No-Fly list (at first it was who was on the list within the last five years) should be barred from purchasing guns.

If you gave only a limited amount of time to the government to go before a judge, the whole thing wouldn’t work, because the government, since it took him off the list, wouldn’t have sufficient grounds to do anything. They’d have to investigate and see if they could come up with a reason.

  14. You know something, by making a show of fighting for legislation that they know cannot pass into law, the Democrats are imitating Ted Cruz. Except that Ted Cruz didn’t actualy disrupt the working of the Senate.

  15. 9.Oh, I wish the decent people of Chicago could own guns! Maybe then they would stop the mass gang killing in the Democrat gulags!

That’s a nice thought, Patricia but there are no “decent people” left in Chicago. They’re either leftist democrat operatives or leftist democrat enablers. The “decent people” moved out long ago.

  16. Didn’t all those people doing the sit-in against handguns actually stand up in favor of Iran’s nuclear program?

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  17. I find it ironic these people are democrats when five decades ago a Republican named Martin Luther Kung Jr. carried a gun and was on the FBI watch list.

    Rev. Hoagie® (734193)

  18. You can own all the guns you want in Chicago if you are not a felon, a spouse abuser, an addict, or mentally ill; and keep them in your home, land, or fixed place of business. No registration, no permit, just the Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification card which is issued to anyone without the above disabilities who can pay $5.00. If you want to carry concealed in public, you can get a concealed carry permit. That’s a little more involved and more expensive.

  19. This is the same-old same-old. Remember when they walked with arms linked across the maul through throngs of Tea Partyers on the day that they rammed through ObamaCare? They figured someone in the crowd would be rude enough to turn this into a domestic Abu Ghraib that would allow them divert attention from their own behavior. And the media bought their reports that they had been subjected to racial slurs, etc., at least until Breitbart offered $100K for anyone who could provide a recording supporting their lies. But by that time it was “old news”, meaning the LHMFM could ignore the real story.

If 50% of the country finds this transparently manipulative behavior commendable, we’re screwed.

    We’re screwed.

  21. In New York City, somebody recently was indicted for paying off police to approve gun licenses in two months instead of the usual year, including some who wouldn’t have gotten one at all.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/19/nyregion/brooklyn-man-accused-of-improperly-obtaining-handgun-licenses.html?_r=0

Mr. Lichtenstein tried to bribe an officer to help him obtain pistol licenses, offering him $6,000 per license and telling him he had already obtained an estimated 150 permits over the last year through his connections at the License Division, a claim the officer secretly recorded, the complaint said…

…In one instance, a man whose license application fee was paid for with Mr. Lichtenstein’s credit card was approved for a full-carry permit in July 2013, despite a forgery arrest, four domestic violence complaints, three car accidents and 10 moving violations. They were all red flags that could have barred him from obtaining a permit. Months later, a complaint was made to the police that Mr. Lichtenstein used his connections to get the man a license despite his history of domestic violence, but it apparently was not investigated, the criminal complaint said.

If only Democrats would do a middle-of-the-night sit-in to protest ISIS running around with guns.

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  24. Gun control is racist. There is a direct correlation — a very strong, direct correlation — between stringent gun control laws and having dark people around. The fewer the dark people, the fewer the restrictions on firearms. As exemplified by Vermont which has never had dark people to speak of and no gun control.

    nk (dbc370)

  25. I actually tried to look up the origin and evolution of gun rights and gun laws in America, nk. It became so convoluted by mid 1800’s racist drivel and a bunch of lawyerspeak© I finally surrendered in disgust. But yeah, it seems to have a lot to do with the democrats wanting blacks unarmed.

No matter the right or wrong, or the reason, he [Paul Ryan] completely lost control of the House, and he looks weak and ineffective as a leader.

He shouldn’t have returned to the floor to be shouted down…

This erson adds didn;’t he ay attention to the Act 10 protests in Wisconsin?

    Sammy Finkelman (7a22e4)

  31. The Democrats would not have done this if they did not know that Ryan is a weak sister who would not turn off the House cameras, not expel the reporters, and not have the Sergeant-at-arms evict the sitters. They had plenty of time to take his measure and they know his spine is the consistency of a boiled noodle. A genuine, dyed-in-the-wool, Republican, in other words.

  36. It does not help when 47 Republicans agree that a no-fly list should be the basis for a gun ban, trying to fool the people with a “due process” lipstick on the pig. The no-fly list is already a violation of due process. Thanks, Shrub.

  37. This is a copy and paste of my previous comment which went into moderation:

I read at hot air that they did turn off the House cameras. The video is/was from one of the representative’s cell phones, patched through CSPAN.

    papertiger (c2d6da)

  40. He did turn off the cameras from my understanding, and the filming of it was from someone’s cell phone feed being picked up by CSPAN.

I recently read somewhere a number of quotes from the time of the Constitution about gun ownership that were clear in saying that the “militia” was meant to be everyone who could responsibly handle a firearm.

And I believe a major early effort of the NRA was to help African Americans learn to defend themselves against lynch mobs.

But facts don’t mean what they used to.

    51.4%

No, the several states could not. The United States could if it violated any of more than a few Constitutional provisions — from minting money in other than gold or silver to making war against Oregon, and lots of things in-between. Take a peek at the Constitution. The Civil Rights acts, too.
