Michelle Fields Explains What Happened At The Trump Press Conference

Filed under: General — Dana @ 6:16 am

[guest post by Dana]

In her own words:

On Tuesday night, I went to cover Donald Trump’s press conference at the Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida. I was looking to cover the event like I have covered many live political events for Breitbart News, including an uneventful Trump press conference in Palm Beach the week before.

Addressing the gathered reporters and the nation at large, Trump was in an especially jovial mood Tuesday night. The networks just declared he had won the Mississippi Republican primary and, during his speech, that he won Michigan Republican primary as well.

I wasn’t called upon to ask a question during the televised press conference, but afterwards Trump wandered around, stopping at every reporter to take their questions. When he approached me, I asked him about his view on an aspect of affirmative action.

Trump acknowledged the question, but before he could answer I was jolted backwards. Someone had grabbed me tightly by the arm and yanked me down. I almost fell to the ground, but was able to maintain my balance. Nonetheless, I was shaken.

The Washington Post’s Ben Terris immediately remarked that it was Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, who aggressively tried to pull me to the ground. I quickly turned around and saw Lewandowski and Trump exiting the building together. No apology. No explanation for why he did this.

Even if Trump was done taking questions, Lewandowski would be out of line. Campaign managers aren’t supposed to try to forcefully throw reporters to the ground, no matter the circumstance. But what made this especially jarring is that there was no hint Trump was done taking questions. No one was pushing him to get away. He seemed to have been happily answering queries from my fellow reporters just a moment before.

Lewandowski is no stranger to hostile behavior on the campaign trail, and Trump is no stranger to condoning it. And it’s not like Fields was a protester that Trump’s plainclothes private intelligence officers had ferreted out and sought to expel from the event.

Fields does not mention that she has filed a police report.

As of this writing, the Trump campaign has apparently not offered an apology to Fields nor fired Lewandowski. And as of this writing, I cannot find where the candidate, known for madly tweeting about anything and everything to do with himself, has mentioned the matter either.

UPDATE BY PATTERICO: CNN should ask Trump tonight about the assault. Then, they should have Michelle Fields re-ask the question she was trying to ask Trump about Scalia.

  5. Manufactured outrage. This is rubbish to 99.999% of Americans. He grabbed her arm and pulled her and she almost fell!!!! HITLER!

The focus on him being a con man with the school, how he shorts his vendors on payments, …. that is where the money is. This is just trying to out PT Barnum, PT Barnum.

Such a loser approach too by the Cruz folks and worse yet Cruz yesterday went there calling his own voting base Low Information for liking Donald. It was working idiots! Why get off script?

SMH stupid. Trump voters like him for being rude and nasty. They may not like him for being a Con Man. And we will have a brigade of “Trump is not a good man” folks bemoaning Trump and comparing him to Nazis.

Dear god — and we talk about how out of touch the Country Club Republicans are.

  13. we should all stand united for to demand the prosecution of the Republican thug what is taking the Republican war on women to extreme new levels

but sources tell me Corey the bruiser has yet to be arrested for this vicious assault

this is suboptimal to where justice is being thwarted

    happyfeet (831175)

  14. What’s even MORE disturbing is that Breitbart seems to be relatively unconcerned that one of their own reporters was assaulted by the campaign manager of the candidate the organizartion is shilling for.

    Denny (08f9a5)

  15. This incident shows Trump’s lack of care for women in general as well as “the little guy” that he says he supports. His campaign is showing stress and is perhaps a bit out of control and this Lewandowski guy is way out of control. The fact that Trump ignores this incident shows that he’s aware he’s in the wrong.

    That’s my official condemnation.

Now for the reality. Nobody cares if a journalist gets roughed up. Not even a woman journalist. If they’re tough enough for the military they’re tough enough for this. If not find a new field. Finally, it’s nice to see somebody whack a snot-nosed journalist once in a while. That’s why they love Trump. And that’s what we here will never understand.

    2 1/2 years ago:

“So at his New York penthouse office atop Trump Tower, he convened a meeting.
Trump ushered in a pair of men — one to talk about the awards and a Democratic strategist who works with nonprofits — and three young DREAMer activists.
    …..
Trump alternated between making no sense and broad ignorance on the issue, said Gaby Pacheco, a prominent national activist and the third DREAMer in the meeting.
    …..
You know, the truth is I have a lot of illegals working for me in Miami,” he told them, using the term for undocumented immigrants those in the meeting found offensive. “You know in Miami, my golf course is tended by all these Hispanics — if it wasn’t for them my lawn wouldn’t be the lawn it is; it’s the best lawn,” Pacheco recalled Trump saying.
Trump said he knew the work of undocumented people is what makes his golf courses and hotels great.
    …..
“You’ve convinced me,” Trump said to the delight of the activists in the room.
“We all smiled at each other and said, ‘Wow, we did it, we got this guy to change his mind,’” Pacheco said.”

And if you’re pretending this is cool you’re a hack.

Hitchcock, I don’t think Ropelight is obligated to comment. If he is really just sitting out that’s a lot classier than those who defend what they know is wrong. Shows he has some integrity.

  40. but Michelle had – and still has – any number of options for how to get the details of her horrifying ordeal out

she could’ve talked to a reporter, for example

she could’ve tweetered a pic of her injuries

she could’ve filed a police report and then released it

    happyfeet (831175)

  41. Or she could have told her friends and family, like her boyfriend, who tweeted about it and then her employer told her to stop him. I’m sure that chilled her willingness to do more.

  45. It is really too bad that this azzhole Trump decided to ratfu** the GOP nominating process. We could have sorted out a lot of stuff in a calm and collected way without him making it all as tawdry as he is.

A Cruz/Rubio/Walker/Bush contest would have been quite a great thing for the GOP. But no. It had to be about YUUUUGE walls and name-calling. Quite embarrassing, actually.

The funniest, if not most pathetic thing, is all the Trump supporters who in the same breath trash Cruz and then claim that nominating Trump will pave the way for conservative constitutional government.

  61. I am losing respect for people that simply deny what the people involved have admitted to.

    JD (7c41e0)

  62. And now, after CL previously admitted it, the Trump campaign is denying it ever happened, or if it did, it was because she set it up.

    JD (7c41e0)

  63. I don’t know who to believe anymore

those definitely look like mild bruises, but are they consonant with the vicious assault what is alleged?

We may need to send the pic to a forensics lab.

    happyfeet (831175)

  64. happyfeet, I don’t know that anyone is alleging it was “a vicious assault.”
Here are her own words, “Trump acknowledged the question, but before he could answer I was jolted backwards. Someone had grabbed me tightly by the arm and yanked me down. I almost fell to the ground, but was able to maintain my balance. Nonetheless, I was shaken.”

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  65. a non-vicious assault would definitely help explain the mildness of the bruisings, CS

what we can tell for sure is that the bruises on Ace’s site look almost identical to the ones Michelle tweeted earlier, so that’s definitely a point in her favor – consistency counts for a lot in these matters

but if that’s the case why would the Trump staff be pushing back on Michelle’s allegations?

And why’s Michelle now speculating that these alleged bruises maybe appeared by magic?

And now Leon Wolf is speculating a bear may have been involved.

    Bears are scary.

    happyfeet (831175)

  66. Here’s the bruising on her arm.
I disagree with happyfeet that it’s inconsistent with her account.

I also found the Trump campaign’s response statement to contradict itself and be totally bizarre. They know they are in the wrong, and have decided to attack the reporter’s reputation. So surprising.

    Dustin (2a8be7)

  67. well leon was raised by wolves, so he would know, shirley,

  68. You used to be better than this, Happyfeet. Why would you deny it when Lewandowski admitted it?

  69. it’s troubling also that nobody proofed the Trump press release before it was released

    major pet peeve

    happyfeet (831175)

  70. Why would you deny it when Lewandowski admitted it?

there’s just too many competing narratives to resolve neatly Mr. JD

the whole episode is beginning to take on a rashomon (sp?)-like quality

    happyfeet (831175)

  71. Ace muses…

I imagine Team Trump’s next move will be to demand Michelle Fields apologize to “Mr. Trump.”

I don’t get that. I’d think it’s more likely they’d ask her to apologize to Corey.

And what happened to this “boyfriend” character? If Michelle’s free to tweeter bruise selfies then surely the bf is free to twitter some more too, no?

    happyfeet (831175)

  72. Ah, the first rule of holes: quit digging.

    Simon Jester (c8876d)

  73. if Michelle called Leon to tell him about the bear, does that make her the girl who called wolf?

Bullshlt. The person that is alleged to have done something admitted that he did it. All the alleged competing narratives have been contrived by sycophants after the fact.

    JD (7c41e0)

  77. to be honest Mr. JD i just don’t really care if Corey grabbed Michelle I’m too caught up in the excitement of making America great again

that’s probably wrong of me on some level, but gosh this is so exciting

please don’t ruin this for me

    happyfeet (831175)

  78. A transcript of the alleged altercation between the reporter, Michelle Fields, and Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, follows below, along with her conversation with Terris:

    ***

Din of people talking, clanking of glasses, snippets of conversation, reporters telling one another to ‘move up a little’, greeting each other, saying ‘good to see you’ saying ‘OK good quote then’, then clearly action picks up as cameras start clicking.

Fields: “Mr. Trump, you went after the late Scalia for affirmative action, do you — are you still against affirmative action?”

Voice (allegedly Corey Lewandowski): “Excuse me, thank you.”

A few moments later (noise of the room can be heard)…

    Terris: “You OK?”

    Fields: “Holy sh*t.”

Terris: “Yea he just threw you down.”

Fields: “I can’t believe he just did that that was so hard. Was that Corey?”

Terris: “Yeah, like, what threat were you?”

Fields: “That was insane. You should have felt how hard he grabbed me. That’s insane. I’ve never had anyone do that to me from a campaign.”

Terris: “Can I put that in my story?”

Fields: “Yeah, go for it — that was really awful. That’s so unprofessional.”

Terris: “He really just almost threw you down on the ground.”

Fields: “He literally went like this and was grabbing me down. I don’t even what to do [about] what he just did to me. Oh my God, that really spooked me that someone would do that.”

    Terris: “What threat were you?”

Fields: “Nothing. I was asking about affirmative action.”

Terris: “And he probably knows you, right?”

Fields: “Yeah, I don’t understand. That looks horrible. You’re going after a Breitbart reporter, the people who are nicest to you?”

Terris: “I know, I’m going to put it in my story.”

The two stop talking. Din/noise of people talking, glasses clinking continue through end of the recording.

  87. Remember when Happyfeet used to rail about cults of personality, and now he has his lips firmly implanted on exactly that which he used to despise? And he agrees with Sarah Palin. And supports roughing up female reporters.

    JD (7c41e0)

  88. DRJ – despite Lewsandowski admitting it, the Trump campaign denied it ever happened and attacked Fields. Happyfeet is just following their marching orders.

    JD (7c41e0)

  89. you twisting it all up!

    happyfeet (831175)

  90. Can’t believe the hyperventilating over this by Cruz folks. Navel gazing at its worst.

    happyfeet (831175)

    JD (7c41e0)

  94. And now a Trump supporter at a rally has been arrested for sucker-punching a protester who was being escorted out by law enforcement.

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

    happyfeet (831175)

  97. You are supporting it, Happyfeet. Period. Full stop. There is no reason, no excuse, for a campaign manager to put his hands on any journalist, much less a female journalist. Your actions here serve to do nothing but excuse the actions, attack the victim, and blow smoke where none existed.

    JD (7c41e0)

  98. Brett Baier, three minutes into tonight’s “Special Report,” reported this story in some length, including the Trump campaign’s (ridiculous) denial.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  99. i don’t agree I’m supporting it

i don’t think it was a big deal

i think some people are opportunistically jumping on it cause harvardtrash ted is losing, and they don’t like the feels

    happyfeet (831175)

  100. well it was a mistake on lewandowski’s part, but this isn’t the greg stillson moment you were looking for, I do recall the daily caller, was almost chortling when her family was attacked and
a false narrative was put forth,

    narciso (732bc0)

  101. happyfeet, the sucker-punch was caught on video.

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  102. happyfeet, the sucker-punch was caught on video.

    um yeah i saw

the dude what punched the guy was very correctly arrested

    happyfeet (831175)

  103. Maybe the Breitbart people should reexamine their position of being the media outlet that’s “nicest” to Donald Trump, huh?

    Nah. They won’t.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  104. Mr. Feet, if you think this wasn’t a “big deal,” my advice to you is that you drop the subject. You’re fast spending your very limited reservoirs of good-will. If this event isn’t a “big deal” in the context of the overall political campaign (despite it being a very big deal to the victim of the assault, and despite the fact that it should be a career-ending event for the assailant), it’s nevertheless an extremely poor choice of situations for you to pick to defend Trump so vigorously. It’s not defensible, and you’re certainly not helping to minimize it.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  105. #90 Whatever JD. So me thinking this is nonsense issue makes me pro abuse? U Cruz folks here are out of your minds. And I am a Cruz guy. Hate Trump but this is squirrel chasing at its worst. Like Trump folks going birther. Frankly you all sound like troglodytes.

    Rodney King's Spirit (3adc86)

  106. y’all just see things differently Mr. Beldar

here’s what i spy wif my pikachu eye

if Mr. Trump can win in spite of all these kerfuffles, that just makes the establishment’s failure so much more delicious

    happyfeet (831175)

  107. Taking a position that a campaign manager, or any man for that manner, should not out their hands on a reporter, especially a female reporter, in such a manner makes me a troglodyte. Gotcha.

    JD (7c41e0)

  108. @ DRJ (#82): My transcript of Brett Baier’s reporting (actually, news-reading, but whatever):

The conservative political website Breitbart is calling for Donald Trump to fire his campaign manager after one of its reporters says she was roughed up at a Trump event. Michelle Fields, who’s a former Fox News contributor and regular guest, says she was nearly pulled to the ground Tuesday by Trump campaign manager Cory Lewandowski when she asked Trump a question.

Breitbart’s editor at large [graphic: Ben Shapiro, @benshapiro] tweets, quote, “Lewandowski should be fired. This is not about Michelle being ‘part of the story.’ It’s about bad people tolerating thuggery.

Trump’s campaign fired back today, saying the accusation is entirely false, and, quote, “There are often large crowds aggressively seeking access to Mr. Trump and our staff would never do anything to harm another individual, while at the same time understanding that Mr. Trump and his personal space should never be invaded.” The campaign then went on to question Ms. Fields’ honesty. The Washington Post’s Ben Terris has confirmed Fields’ account, saying he witnessed the event.

Fair notice that this may be asked at tonight’s debate.

My goodness, even Trump’s campaign flacks can’t manage to speak grammatically. Mr. Trump should never be invaded? We’d “never do anything to harm another individual, while at the same time understanding ….” Huh, what?

    Morons led by a con-man.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  109. Morons led by a con-man.

nono Mr. Beldar they’re good people what just want to help make America great again

good people what have been horrifically betrayed by the Republican Party

you can’t look into their haunted eyes and not feel at least some of what they feel

    happyfeet (831175)

  110. RSK – so it is crystal clear, it would be wrong if Hillary’s staff did this, Sanders staff, Cruz’s staff, Rubio’s staff, Kasich’s staff, anyone’s staff. I guess thinking a man should not out his hands on a woman in such a manner makes me a troglodyte.

    JD (7c41e0)

  111. Let’s all take turns doing to HF what Trump’s campaign manager did to the reporter. It’s not a big deal. I’m sure HF wouldn’t mind one bit. Tuckfard.

    John Hitchcock (794fe0)

  112. Lewandowski is not a good person, Happyfeet.

    JD (7c41e0)

  113. If Trump becomes the nominee, this man-handling of Fields will just be food for the left wing ‘War on Women’ narrative, particularly since the guy is one of Trump’s top aides.
If something like this is done by a supporter or even security staff, most voters will recognize that’s not something to blame the candidate for. But when it’s one of your top aides?

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  114. Lewandowski is not a good person, Happyfeet.

i have absolutely no illusions about any of the campaign managers being good people Mr. JD

    or any of the candidates

but I think it’s possible they can do good things

    happyfeet (831175)

  115. Cruz’s communication guy was fired for way way way way way way less.

    JD (7c41e0)

  116. So here’s the thing, JD. HF can call a woman a “cupcake” and make light of what happened.

But it’s wrong to call him what he is, as relentlessly as we hear his bizarre and hypocritical support for a cut rate Huey Long?

I understand that the guy—whom some have said is a decent Joe—is playing a part, and is sort of a rhetorical bomb thrower. And I also understand his goal is to be offensive.

But he certainly has been upping the ante. Me, I can’t wait for him to push it to far and get banned. Some people need limits from others.

Mind you, I wouldn’t care if he cut out the nonsense and simply stated his positions. But the boy just can’t help it.

    Simon Jester (c8876d)

  117. I keep coming back to this.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJGUm9e_BLU

    Simon Jester (c8876d)

  118. yes yes yes i can make light of “what happened” Mr. Jester

it doesn’t strike me as a big deal at all and it’s been blown out of all proportion i think

action girl reporter seriously needs to buck up

    happyfeet (831175)

  119. Again, dude, people here don’t treat you the way you treat others.

    I think they should.

Because I suspect that is the only language you understand. Much like the Foghorn Leghorn you are championing.

    Simon Jester (c8876d)

  120. oh my goodness i treat people super nicely you wouldn’t belieber the week I’ve had Mr. Jester

    happyfeet (831175)

  121. I defended Trump regarding that secret service agent, because Trump does not tell the Secret Service what to do regarding their rules for handling people.

I also have no objection at all to protestors (those that go merely to disrupt) getting bounced. I absolutely detest Sanders in every way possible, but I’d have at least giving him some grudging respect if he’d had the protestors who booted him from his podium roughly ejected. Freedom of speech does not include disrupting an event, so good riddance to bad rubbish. On the other hand, if they want to peacefully protest outside, I’ll fight for their right to do so because that is freedom of speech.

As for the reporter, that’s where I see a big problem. *IF* the story is true (I’m always skeptical of early reports on anything, anywhere) then yeah, that was utterly uncalled for, and sounds like assault to me. I’ll also say that the gender of the reporter is irrelevant. If the story is true, then yes, Trump should fire the guy.

    Arizona CJ (da673d)

  122. Actually I think that reporter should apologize to Mr. Trump.

    Boris (fe733d)

  123. For what, exactly?

    JD (588c0e)

  124. For trying to bust through his security then doing her innocent little girl act. The whole thing looks like a setup to me.

    Boris (fe733d)

  125. Lololololololololololol

    JD (34f761)

  126. Lol? And the assassination of Bobby Kennedy and attempted assassination of Reagan are ROTFLMAO funny, right?

    Boris (fe733d)

  127. Ok, you are a bit more touched than I originally thought.

    JD (588c0e)

  128. Touch this, JD. *flips middle finger*

    Boris (e6ab75)

  129. For trying to bust through his security then doing her innocent little girl act. The whole thing looks like a setup to me.

She busted through his security? Says who?

    Dana (86e864)

  130. Boris and Natasha are just making shlt up, Dana.

    JD (588c0e)

  131. good allah, vishnu and pazuzu!

    narciso (732bc0)

  132. Not making anything up, JD. You’re the one who feels the need to latch onto something, anything, no matter how piddling, to justify your distaste for Mr. Trump.

    Boris (e6ab75)

  133. Show us your evidence that she busted through security in an attempt to assassinate someone, like you insinuated, Boris. You lied. It never happened. The person accused of this admitted to doing it. Yet idiots like you continue with this charade that it was the victims fault. You are a comedy. Pure gold.

    JD (34f761)

  134. Then I guess you’ll be in stitches when Mr. Trump becomes President. BTW, you’re rude.

    Boris (e6ab75)
