Hillary Clinton’s Problem With Women Voters

Filed under: General — Dana @ 7:46 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Poor Hillary Clinton. Not only did she get clobbered in New Hampshire by the Sexist Socialist, she also lost every demographic group other than the 65+ crowd and those making over $200,000.

Perhaps her landslide loss this week speaks to voters being weary of her never-ending presence on the national stage and being tired of her yelling at them. Certainly their increasing distrust of her greatly factored into the outcome. Considering everything from Benghazi, to her email scandal, to an FBI investigation, well, any of these would cause a rational person to harbor grave doubts and misgivings about her judgement and trustworthiness.

And then there is her hypocrisy. Consider her close ties to Wall Street. She earned big Wall Street money giving big speeches. Speeches, by the way, whose content she would rather you didn’t know. And no wonder. Pandering is always fraught with danger. You pander to a special interest group one day, the next day you are excoriating them before voters for their mere existence. It’s quite a juggling act, and one that will cost dearly if you are exposed.

Clearly there are a number of reasons why she lost so badly.

I’m guessing that most shocking, and frankly, embarrassing to her is that the iconic feminist of all feminists lost the vote of women.

If you’re the self-proclaimed savior of women who claims to have spent an entire lifetime championing women’s rights and are running on a campaign platform of the same, to lose the vote of your people has to be the biggest blow of all.

But when one considers Hillary’s inability on the campaign trail to successfully address accusations about smearing women who accused her husband of sexual abuse and rape, and enabling his bad behavior toward women, one is not convinced that she has ever been a friend to women.

Further, it’s not wise to try to guilt women into voting for you. While women may like to play the guilt trip on their kids, and even their husbands, they don’t like it being played on them. So trotting out Madeline Albright to threaten women with going to hell if they didn’t vote for Hillary was bound to backfire.

To make matters worse, when Gloria Steinem steps in and makes a profoundly sexist accusation and blames young women’s hormones for not supporting Hillary, it shouldn’t be surprising that those young women get righteously pissed off about being treated in such a condescending manner.

Simply put, Hillary Clinton cannot win by simultaneously campaigning on a platform of feminism and women’s rights, and at the same time, insult the intelligence of the very women she hopes to convince.

With that, Carly Fiorina, who ended her campaign for the presidency yesterday, keeps it simple, because it is:

To young girls and women across the country, I say: do not let others define you. Do not listen to anyone who says you have to vote a certain way or for a certain candidate because you’re a woman. That is not feminism. Feminism doesn’t shut down conversations or threaten women. It is not about ideology. It is not a weapon to wield against your political opponent. A feminist is a woman who lives the life she chooses and uses all her God-given gifts. And always remember that a leader is not born, but made. Choose leadership.

This is a woman I can respect.

  1. Hello.

  2. I don’t know why, but somehow that third paragraph especially seems to echo Trump’s rhetorical style.
I think it’s something about the short, choppy narration, in an artificially detached tone phrased as if it were a caution when it’s clearly an attack.
And that seems rather off-putting, because it’s so transparently phony.

  3. The really funny thing about Sanders is that the people who really ought to like him are the 65+ he failed with, as by and large they would benefit from his expanded social security and Medicare, and they are done paying federal taxes. Not all the 65+ bunch are sitting on giant investment portfolios.

The people who should fear him like a zombie plague are the 20-somethings would would be paying for all this their entire working lives. Now maybe the idea of 50% marginal tax rates on the average working stiff and living in government’s embrace their entire life sounds like heaven to them — it’s hard to judge the helicopter kids. But it will be terrible when they find out. I wonder who they will blame it on. Probably the boomers (who are the only cohort opposed).

  4. Kevin M,

Good points. How then do you explain the inconsistency of both demographics?

    Dana (86e864)

  5. I know a Socialist 20-something pretty well. She’d love all the freebies she imagines Bernie will give her and she imagines it will be for life. She has no reason to imagine otherwise. Her parents have done that for her all her life and are still doing it.

  6. Ibidiem,

Are you referring to my third paragraph?

    Dana (86e864)

  7. So I suppose the existential question becomes, “Can someone give us a guarantee that Madeline Albright’s going to hell for failing to support Carly Fiorina’s candidacy?!

  9. Ted Cruz also takes donations from wall street.
so expect the same to happen to him against Bernie Sanders.

the only one that seems to have a legit chance of winning of winning on
the GOP side is Trump. for clinton all he needs to do… is bring out esptein’s underage girls
it’ll be impossible for hillary to defend women and her husband.
and bernie.. just treat him like McCain (Version II) on the democrat side.

  10. #6 Dana,
Yes, I’m referring to your third paragraph.
Somehow, it came across ‘familiar’ enough in style that I had to check the author.
It certainly doesn’t read as phony as Trump, so I apologize for phrasing my final sentence in so as to refer to both your comments and his.

If I may, perhaps it is like polio.

The older a person is, the more likely they know to fear polio from first-hand knowledge of people inflicted with that disease.

The younger a person is, the more likely they lost their fear due to the polio vaccine.

Same for socialism — substitute polio with Soviet Union and polio vaccine with Ronald Reagan.

  12. “It certainly doesn’t read as phony as Trump.”

    As phony? Really???

    Okay then.

    Dana (86e864)

  13. Pons,

I think the young people falling for Bernie are a subsidized generation and know nothing else. First their parents, then the government. It’s “Julia”, from cradle to grave. Young people are all about fairness and justice utopia and Bernie is essentially offering them a delusion of that. Older people have learned there is no free lunch.

    Dana (86e864)

  14. #9,
Cruz isn’t running against Wall Street; he’s running against Washington.
Trump’s the only (R) who has hints of the anti-Wall Street flavor.
And don’t think that the whole country is against Wall Street; but the rising tide within the Democratic party seems to be.
(Speaking of them…Alan Grayson, anti-Wall Street activist and Cayman Islands hedge fund manager…)

Cruz is sure to point out that the Dems help the rich (income inequality is greater under Dems). And no, arguing that a rising tide floats all boats isn’t inconsistant with that: it’s cronyism vs. capitalism.

As far as Sanders goes, one can certainly find conflicts of interest…like his wife’s (mis)management of Burlington College. (Husband of former private college admin that squandered money on a new campus supports universal taxpayer-funded college education…does that sound like it needs explanation?)

I suspect Trump will probably be goaded to attack the Democratic candidate after the convention, even if he loses; I’m anticipating some sort of attempted smear/taunt from the Dems like “the GOP hasn’t picked Trump, but they’re keeping his [insert plank/epithet here]”, and I doubt Trump will take the personal attack lying down.
But Carson, Cruz and perhaps Rubio may be the only (R)s who could beat him gracefully; it’s possible that another candidate would say something Trump took as a taunt, precipitating a deluge.

BTW: Polls from a while back indicated the most “electable” Republican candidates against Clinton, in terms of “who would you vote for, Clinton or X?” as Rubio (9% lead), Cruz (7% lead), and Trump (3% lead), in that order. Bush was tied, and Kasich was not mentioned.
So Trump is/was more electable than Jeb; but I’m unaware of any signs that he’s more electable than Cruz.

  15. @13 Dana,

    Yep, spot on.

    As always.

  16. Dana,
I’m sorry for what my comments said or implied about your writing (to the effect that it seemed phony). My intentions did not translate into what I wrote, but I wrote it, and what I wrote was inappropriate.

    Ibidem (f7be92)

  17. Forgive me for not attributing this to the person who first came up with this formulation (and who I have already forgotten, damn this old age), but the hypocrisy of Hillary! Rodham Clinton can be summed up in the classic Hillary! Paradox: It’s totally cool if Goldman-Sachs gives her $675,000 to deliver pointless and banal speeches at corporate get-togethers even though she plans to seek higher office, but it should be completely illegal for Goldman-Sachs to spend $675,000 on a commercial criticizing her positions on the issues.

  20. I didn’t see hillary in the 1960’s either! She was for goldwater when he voted against the civil rights bill.

    john lewis (784d9d)

  21. BTW, as an older person, I wonder about some of the fine points of Sander’s (and, more importantly, Hillary’s) plans. Like, what about that $500K exclusion on house sales? Stiff cap gains taxes without that will really piss off older folks downsizing for retirement and cashing in their nest egg. Also, are they going to raid 401(k) plans? I suspect Bernie would happily force everyone into Social Security as their sole retirement plan.

Maybe this is part of the 65+ issue: old farts know better that to trust politicians when they come bearing gifts. We know this time it won’t be different.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  22. She’ll beat Bernie, but she will get crushed in the general (if she is still running at all) because women will stay home in droves.

Turnout is gonna be enormous for the GOP if they manage to nominate Ted. It may be better than average if it’s Rubio.

You know what happens when you tell a woman “You must do X, because you’re a woman?”

    Yeah.

  28. a friend of mine who is a surgeon is a 50 year old woman. She has never been married and dates women on and off? She said she has a friend of her that says she knows women that have dated Hillary. Where is the transparency…. take it for what you want. Personally I think she may have had a history of dating women but that she is now too old to even care about anything other than being president. I am a straight woman. I am against gay marriage but don’t want to tell anyone how to live their life.

  48. JRT,

I just want to assure you that Fiorina is 100% behind Israel. She actually has some foreign policy chops, so it’s not just a “political stance.” She was the Chair of the CIA’s External Advisory Board which gave her the highest security clearance, including familiarity with intel involving Israel’s national security concerns.
Please don’t interpret “Israel will have to work with the Palestinians” to mean anything other than that they have to work together because they’re neighbors. Because they do have to work together as neighbors. Netanyahu has said that, and pro-Israel talk show hosts such as Dennis Prager and Michael Medved have said that. But she’s not forfeiting any support for Israel whatsoever.

  49. gosh, see how easy if is to get sidetracked off the topic of Hillary… Who wants to discuss much less vote for the witch. But somehow her cronies/Soro’s donors will lie, cheat and steal the election. Remember when Romney rolled over and played dead after BO stole the 2012 term.
