Super Bowl Open Thread

Filed under: General — JVW @ 11:42 am

[guest post by JVW]

The 50th edition of the Most Overrated Sports Event in the Country is this afternoon (or evening, for those of you in the Eastern time zone). Will Peyton Manning ride off into the sunset capping his stellar career with one final glorious win? Will this year’s MVP Cam Newton become the rare quarterback to win championships on both the college and pro levels?

It is expected that $4.2 billion is being wagered, most of it illegally, on the game. Reports are that the late money is coming in on the Broncos, which has caused a half-point drop in the line by which the Panthers are favored (which currently stands at 5.5 points, with the Wynn in Las Vegas offering an even 5).

Feel free to use the comments to make predictions, discuss the commercials, or recap the game.

Go Broncos.

  1. Go Broncos! I live in Colorado and one of our twin sons, who are due within a week, is named Peyton.

  2. Broncos are wearing white jerseys today
    Because
No one can catch a white bronco in California

    (OJ)

    A Lame joke (debac0)

  3. Last night, these threads were filled with armchair quarterbacks who never threw an interception in their life—because they never performed on live television or on the field—but now it’s time for real armchair quarterbacking! (LOL)

  5. I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that the holier-than-thou Goldwater faction will call Rubio “a robot.” Over. And over. And over. And over. And over. Again.
Sometimes irony is painful…and sometimes it’s ironic.

  6. Far from appearing sheepish about his performance in the debate, in which Mr. Christie ridiculed his reliance on “the memorized 25-second speech,” Mr. Rubio, a Florida senator, insisted that he would “pay” to have clips of his repetitious critique of Mr. Obama rebroadcast for New Hampshire viewers.

“It’s what I believe,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.” “And it’s what I’m going to continue to say, because it happens to be one of the main reasons why I am running. I — this is the greatest country in the history of mankind because of a certain set of principles. Barack Obama wants us to abandon those principles, that he has spent seven years putting in place policies that rip them from us.”

apparently teeny pinga’s algorithm doesn’t account for the idea, believed to be true by many, that food stamp isn’t even running again

    happyfeet (831175)

  7. I can’t stand Cam Newton.

    JD (a8b1e4)

  8. Oh, come on my buddy happyfeet, your perspective is tainted by the fact that you’re eating Cocoa Puffs while watching a “Saved by the Bell” marathon on WGN. (LOL)

Seriously, you’re an amazingly witty and smart commenter.
You know that Rubio was challenging the assertion that Obama does all this crap out of incompetence rather than out of fidelity to his Alinsky training.
Rubio was saying that Obama does all this stuff on purpose. The leading from behind on foreign policy, the executive orders which purposely circumvent Congress, the “I just read about the latest scandal in my administration in the Washington Post!” excuses…the encouragement of civil disobedience in Ferguson and Occupation Wall Street…the “mistakes” made by IRS, VA, Fast and Furious…these are all by design—not incompetence.
…Obama knows what he’s doing. But he realizes he can’t be up front and explicit about it. So he stumbles and plays the role of Barney Fife, so that people will say, “Oh, it was a little mistake” rather than say “Oh, he’s a devious S.O.B.”

At a very pivotal moment in the 2012 election, Krispy Kreme Christie hugged Obama and told the American people what a wonderful job Obama did for New Jersey. Now, Obama actually did nothing more than any other President when a hurricane crushes the east coast. But Christie did that bowing down and kissing the ring thing because he governs a blue state that he knew was going to give their electoral votes to Obama a few days later, and therefore he wanted to ingratiate himself with the electorate knowing that he was facing re-election a year later.
Even in his GOP Convention speech a couple months earlier, Christie focused singularly on himself rather than making it a speech about electing Mitt Romney.

I’ve generally liked Christie more than a lot of other conservatives have, but let’s face it, he got zero traction in Iowa, and he’s totally desperate to make a decent showing in New Hampshire, and so he went all pirahna on one of our best candidates simply so he could possibly get what—a bump of 1% in the New Hampshire primary?

    That’s not a team player.

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  9. JD,

Yeah, Cam Newton likes to do an end zone dance on his own 28 yard line. In the first quarter. When he’s playing Tampa Bay.

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  10. You know that Rubio was challenging the assertion that Obama does all this crap out of incompetence rather than out of fidelity to his Alinsky training.

yes yes Mr. Supporter but this is almost insultingly stale thinking

the sell-by date for this messaging was during Mr. Romney’s feeble attempt at a campaign i think, or at least it needs to be part of a much larger critique of cowardly failmerica’s embarrassing decline – a decline in which rubio’s own open borders mentality

his allegiance to sugar and ethanol subsidies

his lusty support for obamatrade – they all play their own ineluctable part

NONONO Mr. Supporter I will not be hornswoggled

    this is all positioning

    it’s messaging not substance

Rubio wants to be the “above the fray take it to the democrats candidate” while everyone attacks cruz and trump

that is what his programmers entered and that is what he believes

well i’m not buying into it he makes me sick

    happyfeet (831175)

  11. And it would be a fitting ending for #18 to ride off into the sunset after beating Brady and then winning another Suoer Bowl, as a decided underdog.

    JD (a8b1e4)

  12. I though March Madness was the most overrated. I offer proof: it involves Obama.

  16. I second Colonel Haiku’s tribute to Dan Hicks. Dan RIP. Saw him many times, he always had a great band.

    Ipso Fatso (10964d)

  17. As for the game, I really don’t care but Cam is ok by me and I like Ron Rivera who is a former Bear. I hate the Bear because of the McCaskeys who are the worst owners in the NFL next to Gerry Jones. Go Carolina.

    Ipso Fatso (10964d)

  18. i look forward to Milhouse claiming I made a dishonest argument. It’s all right their, including the Heap and the Warn winch.

Sorry. Speaking as an International Harvester guy.

    Steve57 (f61b03)

  19. Looking forward to the game.
    Let’s play ball.

  20. their = there.

I hate it when I do that.

    Steve57 (f61b03)

  21. Go Broncos! Surprisingly up 10-0. I still expect Carolina to win, but here’s hoping Peyton can go out the way that John Elway did.

    Mitch (bfd5cd)

  22. Half time. Denver’s offense has struggled since the opening drive. Seems like only a matter of time before Carolina takes the lead.

    Gerald A (7c7ffb)

  23. I have no idea what you’re talking about, or what kind of argument you made. I took it to be some kind of football thing.

    Milhouse (87c499)

  24. I took it to be some kind of football thing.

    Milhouse (87c499) — 2/7/2016 @ 5:33 pm

So…you picked up on the fact that this is the Super Bowl thread. Very perceptive.

    Gerald A (7c7ffb)

  25. Tough to see how the refs’ botched call doesn’t determine the outcome of the game.

That said I am behind. The wife was out taking our daughter to a movie so we are watching on DVR. For us there are still 11 minutes left in the second quarter.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  26. I just can’t get into all this booty shakin’. They should’ve given the whole halftime show to li’l Janelle Monae, girl’s got it goin’ on… return of James Brown.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  27. Disappointed in the commercials this year, for the most part.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  28. Although I’m curious about Deathwish Coffee.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  29. i like janelle

    happyfeet (831175)

  30. Okay, I did like the singing sheep.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  31. The extended half-time was great: I had plenty of time to feed the horses and help bring in groceries* before the game got going. Was the half-time any good? The announcers started the “its almost time for the half-time show…” about 10 minutes into the first quarter.

Most overrated does not begin to tell the story…

*Mrs. Gramps (aka Medical Woman) refuses to watch football due to the injuries inflicted on the players… since well before they started talking about concussions. She took a safari to Costco and Trader Joe’s…

    Gramps (6a37e4)

  32. Defensive war. So far, Bronco D is a touch better.

    JD (a8b1e4)

  33. Through three quarters, the Panthers have been waiting for Superman to untangle his cape and save them. He, and they, are running out of time.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  34. Superman is running for his life.

So far, the Super Bowl babies with Seal commercial is my favorite.

    JD (a8b1e4)

  35. unfortunately someone brought the kryptonite armour,

    narciso (732bc0)

  36. Refs want Cam to win. Another awful call.

    JD (a8b1e4)

  37. Denver up 16 to 7 in the 4th with 12 minutes remaining. Tune in, it should be a good finish.

    ropelight (ec3b5e)

  38. Deathwish sounds like a good way to get your morning off to a lively start!

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  39. JD, “Kiss from a Rose” worked oddly well for that commercial, didn’t it? I liked it too, even though I’m too old to be a Super Bowl Baby. I remember “the Super Bowl,” which no one called “Super Bowl I” because there was no assurance there would ever be a second one. 😀

    Beldar (fa637a)

  40. Panthers field goal now Denver up 16 to 10. 10:21 left in the 4th.

    ropelight (ec3b5e)

  41. C’mon, Denver, hang on to it.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  42. $15 million ad buys by pharmaceuticals so far.

    Ask your doctor.

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  43. So…you picked up on the fact that this is the Super Bowl thread.

Um, yes. That’s why I assumed anything incomprehensible anyone said was probably some kind of football thing and not to worry about it. And your point is?

    Milhouse (87c499)

  44. First team to 19 wins

    JD (a8b1e4)

  45. The halftime show looked as if it were a tryout for Hookers are us. Pathetic crotch show. Unless you think it is entertainment.

    mg (31009b)

  46. I don’t believe Helen Mirren drinks American beer, but she does have a wonderful voice and manner.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  47. Yuengling is American beer.

    ropelight (ec3b5e)

  48. @ mg (#45): IMHO football is a game meant to have competing marching brass bands at halftime. High schools and colleges still generally understand that — except for college bowl games, whose halftimes are almost uniformly loathsome now. What the pros have — what the Super Bowl has especially — is a slightly cleaned up Las Vegas show, except that the Super Bowl usually covers the nipples and always hires a much larger supporting cast. It has nothing to do with football.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  49. And at this point, Don Meredith would begin to warm up his singing voice ….

    Beldar (fa637a)

  50. Cam fumbles, Denver recovers on the 4 yard line. Less than 4 minutes remaining.

    ropelight (ec3b5e)

  51. Denver scores TD. Turn out he lights, the party’s over.

    ropelight (ec3b5e)

  52. The halftime show looked as if it were a tryout for Hookers are us. Pathetic crotch show. Unless you think it is entertainment.

    mg (31009b) — 2/7/2016 @ 6:55 pm

Ongoing coarsening of the culture, mg. Politics is downstream of culture, hence the D-bags and venal nincompoops we are afflicted with.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  53. Denver adds 2 point conversion. Now up 14. With 3:08 minutes remaining.

    ropelight (ec3b5e)

  54. Beldar- Agree, give me the brass. I always liked the dotting of the i by Ohio State. Is that the sousaphone guy that does it?

    mg (31009b)

  55. Wow! Cam goes down at the 6. The Bronco defense has really come alive…

That hold at the 4 giving Denver a 1st & goal at the 2 did not help the Panthers one bi.

Dandy Don would be singing his a$$ off right now…

    Gramps (6a37e4)

  56. Beldar is right about the bands. The Cal band doing the “script Cal” was always a treat.

    Gramps (6a37e4)

  57. @ mg (#55): The Ohio State Band is one of the best, yup. My favorite, though, is the University of Texas Longhorn Band, in which I had the privilege of performing from 1975-1980, and which in fact marched at the halftime of Super Bowl VIII in 1974 at Rice Stadium here in Houston (I just missed it).

    Beldar (fa637a)

  58. I’m happy for Peyton Manning and the Manning family — class acts. I don’t have any bad feelings for Cam Newton or the Panthers — their day will come, but it wasn’t this day.

Heavy favorites sometimes falter — especially if they’re inexperienced. Hmmm.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  59. Wisconsin’s band is very good, and dedicated,
playing a brass instrument when it is zero out takes some perseverance…
for years and years they play a 5th quarter
and everybody jumps up and down to the “Bud-weis-er” (Wis-con-sin) song
    and the stadium shakes

MD in Philly (at the moment not in Philly) (deca84)

  60. I do believe Peyton Manning when he says he’s going to drink a lot of Budweiser tonight. Heh.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  61. Yeah, one would think Newton will have more opportunities
But it doesn’t always happen that way. I remember Paul Molitor talking about how the 1982 Brewers were a young and talented team, and figured they would be back after losing the World Series,
but most, if not all, besides Molitor never made it, and it was a decade with another team (Bluejays) before he did.

MD in Philly (at the moment not in Philly) (deca84)

  62. I’m not sure what the best commercial was, but I’m very sure that the toenail fungus commercial was the worst one — and for the life of me, I can’t figure out how any commercial for that product could ever be anything but the worst.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  63. Great to see Manning go out like the champion he is!

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  64. I wasn’t sure that was a hold by Carolina that allowed Denver to score their last TD but they would have lost anyway. Newton made some nice throws but was way off target on several. I think that defense got in his head.

    Gerald A (7c7ffb)

  65. The Audi commercial was awfully good, but it made me think of Werner von Braun and V2s. The Jeep commercial was trippy but okay. Lots of commercials were trippy, which can be good or can be awful, but rarely inclines me to remember, much less buy, their products.

Alright, time for me to go yell at those kids on my lawn again.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  66. Didn’t watch a second of it. I might have gained some daughter cred though. She was going to a Super Bowl party at her friend’s house. She asked me who was the favorite and I told her the Panthers but it was meaningless. A bad team can beat a good team in any one game, and the Broncos are by no means a bad team. That there were two very good teams matched against each other. The Panthers’ edge was just in the pundits’ minds. She said she’d root for Denver, in that case, because she liked rooting for the underdog. Yisss! 😉

    nk (dbc370)

  67. An awful, sloppy game.

The commercials made me realize, again, that millennials think differently than I do.

I really liked the Audi commercial, and the tribute to the Starman.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  68. The football that has been played this year is mediocre at best.
Probably the weakest performance by a winning offense in S.B. history.

    mg (31009b)

  69. I found the Pokemon commercial to be the most motivational and aspirational.
