  5. CNN is accusing Ted Cruz of being wrong in blaming CNN for misreporting. They seem to be conflating Chris Moody’s tweet with Tapper and Bash’s report. Anyway, they are certainly indignant:

Sen. Ted Cruz knowingly misstated CNN’s reporting during Saturday’s Republican primary debate, despite the fact that CNN’s reporting was correct all along.

“What Senator Cruz said tonight in the debate is categorically false. CNN never corrected its reporting because CNN never had anything to correct. The Cruz campaign’s actions the night of the Iowa caucuses had nothing to do with CNN’s reporting. The fact that Senator Cruz continues to knowingly mislead the voters about this is astonishing.”

I was listening to Hugh Hewitt on Friday when a caller said that CNN’s and the media’s uproar against Cruz is bogus as the actual timelines and tweets confirm that Cruz was correct. She pointed to Steve Deace’s timeline and compilation of the details to confirm Cruz’s accuracy.

Hewitt’s response? He abruptly shut her down and said it didn’t matter from whom or where the miscommunication came from. It was just a “media” story at that point. I’m not sure what “just a media story” is, but I’m pretty sure it matters. And if Hewitt was at all interested in integrity and accuracy in politics and the media, this story would indeed matter. Frankly, it should matter to every voter, no matter their profession or side of the aisle, in that it is illustrative of the deception of media, and how narratives are formed and believed. No matter how untrue they may be.

  6. yes, about defamation and misdirection,

  7. They are doing two things:

    1) Claiming Cruz has said CNN reported that Carson “suspended his campaign” when he said CNN reported that he was “taking a break from campaigning” and

    2) Misdirecting people to their reporter’s feed rather than their official feed, which said that Carson was “taking a break from campaigning”

By changing his claim and misdirecting people to less relevant evidence, they paper over the undeniable fact that what Cruz said in the debate was 100% accurate.

Then they have the nerve to call him a liar. They have no place moderating any future debate with Cruz in it.

    Patterico (86c8ed)

  8. Big media is trusting that there will be just enough confusion to throw people off the scent and point the finger of accusation at Cruz. And remain utterly clueless that once again the media is using and abusing them.

    Dana (86e864)

  9. Further, I’ve read any number of whispers that the Rubio campaign was behind the whole Carson thing (which Rubio’s people deny), and frankly, I’m willing to believe that because those who feel the Cruz threat most are the MSM, lobbyists, and GOP donor class (just like Cruz said!). They have the sharpest knives out for him, and collectively have the most to lose if he becomes the nominee – let alone the president.

  15. DRJ,
Thank you for the good wishes. I’m doing well, busy on the biotech beat. Looking in on the spectacle of the primaries, because like a trainwreck, it’s impossible to ignore. Hope you are all doing well.

  16. Patterico,
I’m well aware of how PolitiFact imposes its reality distortion field on inconvenient truths. But CNN’s tweet is going to be very hard to explain away.

  17. I was busy last night and watched the debate after the fact. I continue to learn from the debates this season. I guess I didn’t realize just how weak Rubio is or how strong Christie can be. Watching Christie handing Rubio his head on a plate left me wonder which of the two mainstream candidates, Rubio or Bush, is the less suited to leading a great nation. They’re boys. I’ve always thought Carson wasn’t up to the task, but last night he bordered on pathetic with his whining about Cruz. I felt embarrassed for him – he’s another boy. Most importantly for me, it was yet another good debate for Cruz, who put in a journeyman performance among a gaggle of competitors, most of whom are determined to demonstrate that they are nothing more than apprentices. Cruz is not Reagan, but I appreciate his attempts to be Reaganesque – humorous, folksy and magnanimous. Last night, Cruz demonstrated, once again, why he’s my guy.

Finally, I’m trying to figure out if Donald Trump was better than usual, or if I’m simply becoming accustom to his shtick.

So maybe I should comment on this thread about PolitiFact. There’s a quote out there somewhere, which I can’t seem to remember or find on the web, about how it isn’t surprising that people are willing to prostitute themselves, but it is surprising how cheaply they are willing to do it. These “fact-checkers” are just another instance.

  19. Shook hands with the next president of the U.S.A. today. Listening to Ted Cruz speak today put me on a high I will never come down from. Seeing him interact with young adults and children was touching. This man is someone everyone needs to see speak. No prompter, no notes, no fake pillars. Just true constitutional love. When I shook his hand I said as a farmer from just across the border from Iowa I am so proud that you fought Big Corn and that you know their is a better way. He looked me straight in the eyes and said thank you very much. The line to speak with him was long and he stayed as long as it took. He is Top Notch material, folks.
Best birthday since I was hatched.

  22. It would be nice if Cruz put out an ad with PolitiFact’s statement, followed by CNN’s actions, then finishing with PolitiFact being agenda-driven and not fact-driven. Push the element of doubt back onto the press, where it belongs.

  23. Col. – This 9 year old kid named Hank had a question for Ted, it had to do with how would you beat Hillary? He answered it eloquently. Driving home listening to sirius, on the fox channel they were talking about this 9 year old kid named Hank and how he was at a town hall meeting, I’m thinking damn, I was there. But no, it was at a Rubio town hall and the kid read a different question.
Same 9 year old Hank. So his parents are parading this kid around as a prop? Seems troubling to me.

Adults go to more than one of these, so why shouldn’t a kid? Especially in Iowa, where this is what people do for entertainment.

If by common sense you mean moving on to the natural follow-on question, then yes.

But there is nothing common nor sensible about the road we’re on.

    U.S.S. Sea Cloud, IX-99,
    Racial Integration for Naval Efficiency

    By

    Commander Carlton Skinner, USCGR (Ret.)

There were race riots in the 1940s. Except for a few black guys who escaped racist Woodrow Wilson’s purge every black guy who went to sea was steward. THAT’s kind of limiting. Now what isn’t limiting is ambition. Your average gun captain is not average. He wants the best gun crew on the boat. Which means if the black steward is strong enough and quick enough, he’s in the running for first shell man or first powder man.

I would say, “But I digress.” But for some ISIL or IRCGN free reason Mabus has decided that the greatest threat facing the Navy is masculinity.

Which brings us back to the point. USS Sea Cloud. White Sailors rioted because they constantly had go to sea and face death. Black sailors couldn’t go to sea.

Stewards and Messmen served a vital role, but you just can’t take them and turn them into Signalmen or Quartermasters overnight. You sure as h3ll can’t turn them into senior enlisted, or later into officer material.

Sea Cloud proved you can’t have a segregated Navy. Black sailors weren’t less then men. The Army found the same thing. Integrated units performed better.

But now. Mabus ignores a Marine Corps study that the Corps is worse off, not better, with women in combat roles.

How do I say this? I love women, and I don’t mean sexually. When I face God and give my account, I doubt my combat potential will be a factor. When it comes to how I measure myself as a human being the fact that I could hike 25 miles with a hundred pounds on my back just never figures in.,

True I’m a sailor. Back in the ’90s when I was growing up the damage control equipment was sexist. By that I mean, 90% of the women in boot camp couldn’t haul a pump or generator up or down a ladder.

In case you’ve been in a meth-induced coma your entire life, negotiating ladders is Biden-worthy literally 100% of what Sailors do.

There are worse people than me who happen to be women. But they’re not worse because they couldn’t go a certain distance with a certain weight without throwing up. Recently the IDF closed armor to women. You have to change a tank tread when somebody is shooting at you. Sorry. You don’t want a girl doing it.

But, yeah, in the world we have to deal with making chicks register for the draft is the logical next step.

  32. …The next element of my reflections, while in Greenland waters, started from a very small incident. Among his many other duties, the executive officer is responsible for the advancement of enlisted men in their ratings. The Northland was a small ship, with a crew of 125. An interested officer could know the entire crew. One of the steward’s mates, [a] Negro, was a skilled motor mechanic. He loved engines and he spent his spare hours in the engine room. He came to me and asked if he could be examined for the rating of Motor Machinist’s Mate 3d class. I asked the engineer officer about the man and was informed that other Chief Motor Machinist’s Mates spoke most favorably of the man’s skills. I had him examined and submitted his papers, which were of the highest caliber, to Coast Guard Headquarters. In good time, considering our remote duty, the response came back from Enlisted Personnel at headquarters that he could not be rated as a Motor Mechanic because he was a Negro and Negroes were only accepted in the Steward’s Branch. This struck me as both unfair and inefficient and therefore undesirable for a military service…

Sing it, bruddah. Sing that song.

  33. http://www.pearlharbor.org/dorie-miller.asp

Dorie was the ship’s heavyweight boxing champ on board the USS West Virginia (BB-48).
Dorie was awarded the Navy Cross by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, on board USS Enterprise (CV-6) at Pearl Harbor, 27 May 1942, for heroism on board USS West Virginia (BB-48) during the Pearl Harbor Attack, 7 December 1941.

He was killed on 24 November 1943 in the line of duty while serving in action on board the USS Liscome Bay (CVE-56)during Operation Galvanic, (the seizure of Makin and Tarawa Atolls in the Gilbert Islands). While cruising near Butaritari Island, a single torpedo from Japanese submarine I-175 struck the escort carrier near the stern. The aircraft bomb magazine detonated a few moments later, sinking the warship within minutes.

In 1973, the USS Miller (FF-1091), a Knox-class frigate, was named in honor of Doris Miller…

No comment. Any comment would be wasted.
