Grahamnesty Out

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:58 am

Na na na na, hey hey, good bye.

Sen. Lindsey Graham is dropping out of the presidential race, his campaign announced this morning.

He was awful for many reasons but he’s out so why waste time listing them? So long, sucker.

  1. Now begins the mad scramble for his .5% of voters.

  2. What is it with these guys? Are they so narcissistic that they actually think they have a chance; or do they just want “Presidential candidate” on their Wikipedia entry?

  3. I hoped he might stay in through NH and maybe even SC. Clearly he realized he was hurting the establishment Republicans coalesce behind a candidate but they are still fragmented as long as Bush, Christie and Rubio are in the race.

Did you see the Palin video with McCain and Graham?

  4. nk,

I think they see running for President as a way to focus the discussion on things they want to talk about, with a media that will sometimes listen and publicize it. It’s a little like guest-blogging at a high-profile website.

  5. Plus, there’s always hope they can score a Cabinet position or even a VP slot the way Biden dud.

  6. Heh. That was a typo but it fits.

  7. no way he could stay in the race after voting for deficitpig paul ryan’s fiscal rape of america

  8. he’s been out of the race since the start. This just makes it official.

I think Jeb! believes that once the top three front-runners all flame out the GOP will turn to him as a unifying figure (I know, I know).

I think Carson doesn’t really have his heart in it, but he doesn’t want to disappoint his strongest supporters.

I think Christie figures his endorsement by the Manchester Union Leader will help him to an upset win in New Hampshire and will give him lots of momentum.

I think Kasich is convinced that GOP moderates will ultimately be attracted to a policy wonk with both executive and legislative experience.

I think Fiorina hopes she might be able to recapture the media attention she received from the first debate, but she might be playing for VP at this point.

I think Paul probably knows he’s not the guy, but wants to stick around to try to push a more libertarian agenda on the party.

I think Huckabee still expects evangelicals in Iowa to rally around him and push him into the top tier.

I think Pataki figures that if Cruz or Rubio win they will want someone from outside Washington as their running mate, and if neither one of them can stand Kaisich, Fiorina or Christie then he’s the guy.

I think Santorum is a decent guy with nothing better to do.

I think Gilmore is angling for VP and now sees himself as the only remaining candidate with military service.

  13. I think the establishment GOP is starting to realize that the turtle strategy of multiple vote-splitters is not going to end up with their desired result.

  16. Is it safe to think that Lindey’s mother and the woman who is his aunt, cousin and sister is ever going to vote for anyone other than him? I think he has that demographic locked up.

I heard he was going to continue to help his country? Which country will he be leaving for and when? Can we donate something for a one-way ticket for him?

So long, Goober, we can’t wait to start missing you!!!

  17. Wow, that’s a shock; a guy who never made the main debate stage drops out of the race.

Graham made my “will not vote for or support in the primary or general” list a while ago. So, I’m happy to see 1/3 of that list no longer in the race. I’m hopeful that the other two GOPe on it, Rubio and Bush, will soon follow suit.

Hrmm, the field is sure narrowing. At the start of the race, it was easier to make a list of the Republicans not running for president than those who were. Now it’s down to, what, 14? Let’s see, at the last debate 9 on the main stage, 4 in the undercard, and a couple who didn’t make either (the only one I can name offhand who is running but hasn’t qualified for a debate is Gilmore). So, counting Gilmore and the debaters, we’re down to just 13. If the field narrows further, the undercard debate will have just one debater, who will be forced to debate himself. I think Kasich would be a good choice for that; he’s taken both sides of enough issues to be able to pull it off.

As for Lindsey Graham, I note he hasn’t endorsed anyone yet. Will the other campaigns be scrambling to get that endorsement, in hopes of getting the vote of Graham’s supporter (Who is believed to live in crucial South Carolina)? Only time will tell.

  18. JVW (30a532) — 12/21/2015 @ 10:49 am,

That all sounds right, but I think that why a candidate stays in the race is not always the same as why they got in the race to start with. There are some, like Hillary, who feel entitled to be elected President. But most of these candidates had a reason why they thought they could appeal to voters, and that primarily is what they stand for and/or their message. In essence, they each think they stand for something that will resonate with voters. It must be very hard to realize it doesn’t, and I think that’s why many of them have problems quitting.

Having said that, Graham is the one candidate that I thought might have gotten into the race in order to use his home state popularity to try to undermine the Tea Party/conservative candidates in South Carolina. He ended up undermining the establishment candidates, which is why I think he’s getting out now.

    DRJ (15874d)

  19. Good point about whether Graham endorses someone, Arizona CJ. I expect he will endorse the establishment candidate who looks best after New Hampshire, which I think will be Rubio or Christie. My guess is he will go with Rubio because Rubio’s foreign policy positions are closer to McCain-Graham’s.

    DRJ (15874d)

  20. Graham will now devote whatever energy he has for the race to attacking Cruz. Cruz should win SC in a walk. With Graham constantly bad-mouthing him, he may not take the early state most suited for his politics.

I will enjoy watching the Senator backing Rubio, who is the biggest squish on border, and therefore national, security. Graham has made a career of squaring such circles.

  21. Presidential Candidate on his speech tour resume will be worth thousands in billing.

    mg (31009b)

  22. Mitt Romney

While the race will miss his unique voice of truth and experience, the @LindseyGrahamSC fight must carry on.

  23. “Republicans lost our most qualified, thoughtful, fearless and honest presidential candidate, not to mention the candidate with the best (and it seemed sometimes the only) sense of humor,” McCain said Monday minutes after Graham’s announcement. “Despite the disadvantages he faced in resources and debate opportunities, Lindsey’s message of serious statesmanship and problem-solving in public affairs, his forthright opposition to policies and attitudes that would endanger our country and reflect poorly on our party, and his genuine decency and humility won him many new admirers.”

It also probably helps shill future books. “I ran for president once, so y’know, buy my book.”

My guess is he will go with Rubio because Rubio’s foreign policy positions are closer to McCain-Graham’s.

As noted at Hot Air, the question isn’t who Graham endorses, but who McCain does. He wasn’t gonna back anyone other than his good buddy, but now Jeb, Christie, and Rubio could get it. It wouldn’t mean much across the country, but McCain is popular in NH and could move the needle for one of them in a key primary.
