Los Angeles Unified School District Closed Today Due to Terror Threat

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:19 am

Reports are developing now, but it sounds like a bomb threat to a bus. (Does not affect my kids, who are not LAUSD.)

That’s a lot of kids not going to school. It seems like an extreme reaction, which is not to say it’s wrong. Either the threat is credible or people are covering their posteriors. Maybe some of both.

This seems likely to loom over tonight’s debate though.

Thanks to A.W. on Twitter for the heads up.

  4. The bigger terror threat exists on a daily basis at the LAUSC, from the tons of loopy-liberal teachers, loopy-liberal administrators and all the rowdy, disruptive kids who are either humored or even embraced by those same teachers and administrators (ie, who reflect the ethos of What’s-His-Name and his federal Justice and Education departments).

  5. In Israel they just live with this kind of thing. Threats don’t shut everything down. Thankfully, we’re not used to the constant state of threat they live under. I have a feeling that is changing.

When the guy at work who tells you Islam is a peaceful religion comes to work two weeks later to kill you and 13 of your colleagues, it makes people feel like this can happen anywhere, anytime. Although we have no idea what the source of this threat is, it’s hard for me to believe that mindset isn’t at work in today’s reaction.

  10. Spot on, AZ Bob. It’s time we started worrying less about what they’re doing or will do to us and start making them fear for their lives and the lives of their friends and families. They have their visions of 72 virgins, I say let’s get those boys laid.

  11. It’s described as a credible threat, especially after San Bernardino. It is like the Israelis because one event has ripple effects across time and space.

  31. Last night I watched the interview of Trump done by Barbara Walters several weeks ago. He makes me very nervous because he is ideologically un-tethered, undoubtedly influenced by decades of being in the midst of and schmoozing with countless numbers of New York City limousine liberals. Worse of all, he very likely has those same innate qualities himself, meaning he has no shortage of left-leaning reflexes. So his being philosophically amoral, if you will, and his also having very thin skin — lashing out at anyone or anything that gets in his way — are not to be taken lightly.

In spite of that, I’d still have no choice but to vote for him over godawful Hillary. Moreover, we’re at such a socially-politically perilous time in US history, that I’d also vote for a Republican like Jeb Bush (who I don’t care for at all, and who in some ways is more of a crummy non-out-and-out liberal than even Trump is) over godawful Hillary.

  32. It may be a real threat, but when I was in high school nearly 30 years ago we had two bomb threats called into school in the same week, forcing evacuations. We had to stand around on the front lawn or in the parking lot while the bob squad and their dogs swept the building before letting us back in. No bombs were ever found, and no one to my knowledge was ever caught, though it should be noted that both threats were called in during finals week in the spring.

And closer to Patterico’s and my neighborhoods, the high school in ritzy Manhattan Beach is now dealing with it’s third bomb threat called in over the past week, so there appear to be any number of bad actors out there trying to induce panic.

  33. I agree, Kevin M. At this point, everything helps Trump and that will continue until the novelty wears off, and then everything will hurt Trump. I hope that happens soon but, like Mark, everyone looks better to me than Hillary.

  34. In the 70’s and early 80’s when I was working — long after high school and college — there were repeated bomb threats to the building where I worked over a period of about 2 years, usually on a Friday. It was always assumed the threats were directed at the bank in the lobby but it was never said for sure. We dutifully evacuated the first 5+ times. After that, almost everyone shrugged their shoulders and kept working. I don’t remember being afraid or even nervous. It was just another day with a bomb threat.

Yes, of course. Raisins. That clears everything up. I’ll just go ahead and correct the mistranslated, misunderstood Quran so instead of the word houris referring to women, I’ll replace it with “rasins.”

    Surah 44:51-54 Ad-Dukhan (The Smoke)

Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place; Within gardens and springs, Wearing [garments of] fine silk and brocade, facing each other. Thus. And We will marry them to fair raisins with large, [beautiful] eyes.

    Surah 52:20 At-Tur (The Mount)

They will be reclining on thrones lined up, and We will marry them to fair raisins with large, [beautiful] eyes.

    Surah 55:54-56 Ar-Rahman (The Beneficent)

[They are] reclining on beds whose linings are of silk brocade, and the fruit of the two gardens is hanging low. So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? In them are
raisins limiting [their] glances, untouched before them by man or jinni –

    Surah 55:70-76 Ar-Rahman (The Beneficent)

In them are good and beautiful raisins – So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? – Fair ones reserved in pavilions – So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? – Untouched before them by man or jinni – So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? – Reclining on green cushions and beautiful fine carpets.

    Surah 56:22-24 Al-Waqi’ah (The Inevitable)

And [for them are] fair raisins with large,
[beautiful] eyes, The likenesses of pearls well-protected, As reward for what they used to do.

    Surah 56:34-38 Al-Waqi’ah (The Inevitable)

And [upon] beds raised high. Indeed, We have produced the raisins of Paradise in a [new] creation And made them virgins, Devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age, For the companions of the right

    Surah 78:31-33 An-Naba (The Tidings)

Indeed, for the righteous is attainment – Gardens and grapevines And full-breasted [raisins] of equal age

So, what have we got? When Muslim men go to the Islamic paradise, Allah will reward them by marrying them to large-eyed, full-breasted virgin raisins, whom no man or jinni has touched before, and these virgin raisins will be reclining in their tents on green cushions, beautiful carpets, and beds raised high, restricting their glances with their large, lovely, lustrous eyes which are the likeness of pearls only to their husbands, to whom they will be devoted for eternity.

I don’t know about the rest of you guys, but when you correct the Quran so it refers to the raisins of paradise and not the women of paradise, Islam gets a whole lot weirder.

  41. A bakery hires a young lady clerk with a penchant for very short skirts. One day a young man enters the store, glances at the clerk, and glances at the loaves of bread behind the counter. “I’d like some raisin bread, please,” the man says politely.

The clerk nods and climbs up a ladder to reach the raisin bread, located on the very top shelf. The man, standing almost directly beneath her, is provided with an excellent view. As the clerk retrieves the bread, a small group of male customers gather around the young man, looking in the same direction.

Pretty soon every man, in turn, is asking for raisin bread, just to see the clerk climb up and down.

After a few trips the clerk is tired and irritated. She stops and fumes at the top of the ladder, glaring at the men standing below. She notices an elderly man who hasn’t ordered yet. “Is yours raisin too?” the clerk asks testily.

“No,” says the old man… “But it’s startin’ to twitch a little.”

  46. My earlier comment was just citing the Quran. According to the ahadith these virginal raisins regenerate their hymens so that Muslim men can spend eternity deflowering the perpetual virgin raisins of paradise.

It’s in the ahadith that Muhammad goes into graphic detail about the pleasures of paradise.

I agree with the professor that the Quran wasn’t originally written in Arabic, but since the earliest archaeological evidence we have of Islam is found in Iran I believe it was most likely originally written in Persian, not Aramaic, and then later translated by somebody who couldn’t have been very literate into Arabic.

The Quran makes several claims for itself that it simply doesn’t deliver on. It claims several times to be a clear book, but much of it makes absolutely no sense. It’s so so unclear and even nonsensical at times, when some Christians visited Muhammad and asked him to explain some contradictory passages, Muhammad was so completely stumped he was literally speechless. He couldn’t say a single word in reply. Later that night he supposedly had a revelation, that he shared with everyone the next day, in which Allah told Muhammad that only Allah can understand certain things he says, and those troublemaking Christians should just shut up and quit trying to sow the seeds of doubt in the minds of good Muslims, who as good Muslims should just focus on the clear parts of the Quran and not trouble their minds over the confusing parts.

It also claims several times that it explains all things in detail. But it’s so lacking in detail that a Muslim wouldn’t know how to be a Muslim if they relied on the Quran to tell them the five basic pillars of Islam (actually it should be six pillars, the sixth pillar being Jihad which the Quran does talk about quite a bit, but Muslims prefer to keep that a secret from us kuffar and I’d say they’re doing a lousy job of keeping that to themselves). To know the basics of Islam they need the Sunnah or the Shia version of the same. There are western Muslims who claim to be strict Quranists, and don’t follow the ahadith or the commentaries but only on the Quran. But they’re either practicing taqqiyah as they don’t want to have to explain certain embarrassing aspects of their religion or they’re heretics. No recognized sect of Islam allow people to rely only on the Quran.

The Quran also claims Allah “sent it down” in Arabic. But that claim doesn’t stand up to scrutiny either. Which it why it has protest several times throughout that it’s written in clear, understandable Arabic. It’s none of the above.

But as badly written as it is, I’m sure the translators didn’t confuse women with raisins.

    Steve57 (50e6a1)

  47. Steve57, that is why I wrote in a previous post: ” I read the Quran and studied other books on the religion. I even outlined the entire Quran to better understand it and how it refers to itself”. It is a confusing and very nasty book.

    Rev. Barack Hussein Hoagie™ (f4eb27)

  48. I think I read that 3 other school districts, including NYC, got emailed threats and viewed them as a hoax. I understand why LA was more concerned, given the proximity in time and location to the San Bernardino attack, but one reason why NYC viewed it as a hoax was that “allah” was not capitalized. Maybe the LA version was more sophisticated but, at this point, I’m afraid most of our federal, state, and local government leaders are so inept that the email could have asked for a ham sandwich and that wouldn’t have raised any red flags.

    DRJ (15874d)

  49. New Yorkers are crazier than Californians but they’re nowhere near as much sissies. Where Californians swoon, New Yorkers make a vulgar gesture saying “I’ve got your bomb threat right here”.

  51. re #43: wonderful nk. did you just make that up?

re #41 (and #48?) : umm, did you read what the hypothesis was? it is not that there was a mistranslation but a mistranscription of the verse in question.
And no, i don’t really take it seriously. I thought it would be obvious I wasn’t being picayune about the 70/72. sorry to get you riled up on a non-thing.

  52. “No,” says the old man… “But it’s startin’ to twitch a little.”

LOL. That’s a good one. It makes me think of a scene in the comedy “The Naked Gun” where the police detective played by actor Leslie Nielsen is in the apartment of the character played by Priscilla Presley. He needs her to get something for him that’s stored on an upper shelf in her place. Nielsen watches her climb up a ladder, and when she (out of camera range) has reached the top, he says, while staring straight up at her, “nice beaver.” A few seconds later Presley comes down the ladder carrying a taxidermied beaver. She says, “Thank you…I just had it stuffed.”
