Ted Cruz Fact-Checks PolitiFact

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:26 pm

PolitiFact “fact-checks” Ted Cruz and finds his claim that the Democrat party is shrinking is “mostly false.” It’s “mostly false” the way the Dread Pirate Roberts was “mostly dead” in that scene from the Princess Bride that Cruz recently recreated to the amusement of journalists in the room.

I’d take apart the PolitiFact piece, but Cruz already did so on Facebook, and it’s more effective (and easier!) just to quote him:

If you want to know why everyone finds lefty journalists so ridiculous, take a look at this particularly silly Politifact. I said “the Democratic Party keeps getting smaller and smaller.” Looking to the actual numbers, Politifact is forced to agree that, in the last seven years, the Democrats have lost 11 governorships, 13 U.S. Senate seats, 69 House seats, and an amazing 910 state legislative seats. Visibly frustrated, they turn to national Gallup polls. Democrats in 2008 had 38% support; today it is 29%.

If Politifact were checking actual “facts,” that would be the end of the matter. They would rate it something like “True, even though we really hate it.” Instead, shaking with frustration, they grasp at straws: but Democrats (with an incumbent president and a massive crony shake-down machine) have raised more money! And here is one poll showing Democrats have (or had) support among Millennials! Of course, neither of those has anything to do with what I said.

Politifact is also, “ahem,” peeved I correctly observed the Democratic field is not exactly young and dynamic.

Here is a prediction for their next Politifact: they will “fact” check my first sentence, and conclude it is false because, hey, they found three other lefty journalists who do not think they are ridiculous….

Thanks to aunursa on the Facebooks.

P.S. I love the part where they quote Cruz as saying: “What does it say that they’re having a hard time finding anyone to run for president who isn’t nearly 207 years old?” They respond: “Ahem: Sanders is 74; fellow Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton is 68.” Hahahahahahaha.

  1. I write the post, and PolitiFact suffers?

    Humiliations galore!

That is a noble cause. Hand me the MacBook, I’m on the job.

  3. Well, the Dhimmicrats are getting all the illegals, which is becoming closer and closer to the plurality in their own party.

Is the next step to get the Syrian “refugees” to start taking out Republicans? Certainly, the next step is not to tell the Governor of Sovereign Louisiana where those folks are. Why?

  4. Is 207 a randomly-selected large number, or is there a clever connection between an event from 1808 and the Democrat’s candidates of which I’m ignorant?
If it’s just meaningless, then kudos to Cruz for picking from the oft-neglected multiples of 23 for his random numbers. Multiples of 23 are severely underrepresented amongst our political jokes.

  5. I’m missing the 1808 event.

There’s an admittedly college-frat type of derogatory variation of “liberal” into “libtard,” but I’m beginning to believe it’s more and more a descriptive form of that word and not just a case of being ad-hominem.

    2015 – 207 = 1808

What does it say that they’re having a hard time finding anyone to run for president who isn’t nearly 207 years old?

Guess it was just a meaningless large number, then.

  9. Hey! Let’s dial back the ageism expressed here. It’s a fact that I’m 207 and you whippersnappers are mocking old codgers and creating a hostile commenting environment, triggering fears, and violating my cyber safe space.

You don’t have to resign, but it would be nice if you sent a few bucks to sooth my injured feelings, and that’s a fact. You can prove it with a check (or money order).

  10. That PolitiFact took that 207 year old thing so seriously suggests nobody at PolitiFact is a serious individual.

  14. To be more accurate, the fourth vowel in PolitiFact should be replaced with the fifth vowel in the alphabet.

  16. No, Dana, they rated Rhodes weasal statement as “fact.” They knew better than to rate Obama’s lie as “fact” – a bridge too far.

Or the fifth consonant in PolitiFact should be replaced with the 18th letter of the alphabet.

Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Reagan allegedly “too old” to be running at that point in his life? I seem to remember the Dims screaming about that. Along with a lot of other things, of course.
