After A Dreadful Week, A Few Positives

Filed under: General — Dana @ 11:35 am

[guest post by Dana]

In spite of a depressing news week, it is well worth noting a few positives (including that which is the direct result of tragedy).

First, reminding us that there are many good and decent people fighting the good fight for freedom, Aaron and Melissa Klein (Sweet Cakes by Melissa) who had been ordered to pay $135,000 to a same-sex couple who threw a legal-sized fit when the Kleins opted not to to provide a cake for their commitment ceremony because it would violate their religious beliefs, have seen a record-breaking $352,500 raised at their Continue to Give fundraising campaign. This just in two months time and on top of the $109,000 already raised in the now shutdown GoFundMe campaign.

Second, last week saw CBS News reporter Major Garrett challenge the president with a fair and tough question about the fate of four Americans still being held in Iran and whose secured release was not part of the Iran deal. The president was obviously offended by the confrontation and a CNN scold publicly pursed her ass-kissing lips in withering judgment. Reminding his colleagues that a real journalist has to both maintain a spine and remain unprejudiced in all manner of reporting, Garrett stood by his questioning:

“Look, the position I’m in, I asked the question I asked and I can’t take it back. The president believed I was suggesting he was content with the Americans’ captivity. That wasn’t the basis of my question,”

Further:

“Do you believe that the president is content to leave the conscience of the nation unaccounted for?” asked Rose. Garrett returned the volley: “I don’t. And the whole point of the question, Charlie, was, why were these four Americans not accounted for in the context of negotiating a wide range of issues with the Iranians? Remember, in the final hours of this deal, the Iranians put other things on the table that hadn’t been previously discussed: the arms embargo on conventional weapons and ballistic missiles. If those could be introduced, it seems to me it’s reasonable to ask the commander-in-chief if other issues on the American side could have been introduced. I suggested there might have been one: the fate of four Americans. I stand by that.”

Third, on the heels of the tragedy in Chattanooga, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin issued executive order 2015-35 which authorizes the adjutant general to :

“arm certain full-time military personnel on military installations throughout Oklahoma with weaponry as deems necessary to adequately provide for the security of the facilities and their occupants.”

The order also includes recruiting centers.

Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas have done likewise.

(This as Pentagon officials scratch their heads over what to do…)

And lastly, a Republican running for the presidency, schools fellow Republicans on how to deftly and efficiently handle the manipulations of the MSM:

In short:

Mark Halperin: “Governor, I would like to ask you a couple questions about Planned Parenthood. [snip] Second, why are you so troubled by this video?”

[snip]

[Rick] Perry: [snip] Mark, let me ask you. You looked at that video and you’re good with it?”

Halperin: “I think the video raises a lot of questions, and you and others have raised them.”

Perry: “It does, indeed. I think you just answered the question for us. Thank you.”

  1. Hello.

    Dana (86e864)

  2. why would you give monies that are just gonna go into the pockets of some whiny lesbians

    that’s not value

and next time Prime Day rolls around you’re gonna wish you had those monies back

    but they will be gone

and all because you made Bad Choices

  3. i found another positive on the internet for you Dana!

Hot Air commenters take the odious and slimy Jazz Shaw to school over Meghan’s Coward Daddy’s putative heroisms!

Seems like a pretty fake and coordinated attempt to diminish Trump.

I actually think the socialized medicine things were worse than this; how can anyone be so stupid as to see McCain’s war record as anything other than a thing he exploits for political gain?

He almost killed a bunch of people on an aircraft carrier due to incompetence, graduated at the bottom of his class and was only there anyway because of his father and grandfather.

Maybe he was a war hero, maybe not, I’ve heard conflicting things.

But he is certainly not above criticism, not after his sorry record in public office.

    oh shucks here’s one more

I do not think this is going to effect him as much as you think it will.

Some of his support is from the center.

It includes people who DESPISE John McCain for his record as a Senator.

I am not a “Trumper”, but to be blunt, John McCain’s War Hero capital has been lost LONG AGO based on his sellout of conservative principles and kissing of Obama’s Azz.

For lack of a better term and based on YOUR positioning here on HA, I think you are “projecting” your Trump hatred onto the situation.

  4. why would you give monies that are just gonna go into the pockets of some whiny lesbians

I understand you are being rhetorical here, but for the record, it is safe to assume that contributors are not giving money to the lesbians per se, but they are using their contributions to voice their support for the everyone’s right to exercise their religious freedoms as well as help the Kleins with legal fees, a potential lien on their house, and bankruptcy.

This isn’t about whiny lesbians. It’s about freedom. You know, the very thing whiny lesbians are against.

  8. The whiny lesbians are still a long way away from getting that $135,000.00. The pervert commission’s decision is going to be reviewed by at least one impartial judge and at least one impartial appellate court and may even go to the federal courts and the Supreme Court even. But it’s gonna take money, a whole lot of money; it’s gonna take time, a long precious time; to do it, to do it, to do it right.

  9. I sure hope my donation, and the others I may give, go for the appeal of this lunatic decision by a non-judge in the people’s republic of Oregon. That guy is a labor commissioner, named Avian who has a long history of pro-gay marriage comments.

Such people are like the nosy, irritating members of a homeowners association, always pushing their agenda and demands onto their neighbors. Except in this case the boundaries of the domain of such individuals go far beyond a community of condominiums or residences.

The mostly liberal nitwits in that category are culturally/ideologically in the crosshairs of all the Islamofascists running around out there — both more likely to inflame things with an embrace of issues like SSM and also a love of political correctness — so it’s getting to the point where if we as a society are setting ourselves up as sitting ducks, so be it. Quack, quack.

  17. Maybe they’ve already doing it like this, and spendthrift trusts vary from state, but these funds can be set up to preclude payment of any money from them for let’s, let’s say, gambling debts, liquor bills, and court judgments awarded to whiny lesbians, provided that the settlor (the person establishing and funding the trust) is not also the beneficiary.

In legal practical terms, an appeal from a money judgment requires a bond to get through the appellate courthouse door and this makes the money very important, legal fees aside, if the Kleins are determined to fight this to the bitter end.

    nk (dbc370)

  18. An appellate court decision in the Klein’s favor would fix this statute for everybody through stare decisis.

  25. But more negatives…

“A key part of President Obama’s legacy will be the fed’s unprecedented collection of sensitive data on Americans by race. The government is prying into our most personal information at the most local levels, all for the purpose of “racial and economic justice.”
Unbeknown to most Americans, Obama’s racial bean counters are furiously mining data on their health, home loans, credit cards, places of work, neighborhoods, even how their kids are disciplined in school — all to document “inequalities” between minorities and whites.
This Orwellian-style stockpile of statistics includes a vast and permanent network of discrimination databases, which Obama already is using to make “disparate impact” cases against: banks that don’t make enough prime loans to minorities; schools that suspend too many blacks; cities that don’t offer enough Section 8 and other low-income housing for minorities; and employers who turn down African-Americans for jobs due to criminal backgrounds.
Big Brother Barack wants the databases operational before he leaves office, and much of the data in them will be posted online.
So civil-rights attorneys and urban activist groups will be able to exploit them to show patterns of “racial disparities” and “segregation,” even if no other evidence of discrimination exists…”

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  26. I do not understand why latina voter thinks it will be a good thing for those minority kids if the US turns into the crime infested mess that Mexico is, which is why everyone wants to get out of there.
Once the US is as messed up as Mexico, that leaves Canada as the last alternative,
depending on how that will be when the time comes.
And after that the immigrant’s last song will be in the land of the ice and snow, if they want to go there.
Rumor has it there is virtually no drug cartel crime north of the arctic circle.
    At least in N. America.
Don’t know about the ice and snow and midnight sun in Norway and Sweden and Russia. I here those places have big problems, just not sure how far north it goes.
But then, burkas would be quite reasonable and fashionable where it is below zero.

  28. i miss hills so much

I read not long ago someone saying that the Chicago area is very flat terrain. Meanwhile, yes, there has been rain and thunder in the LA area today, which is a nice change of pace, and a sign of climatic activity that’s unusual for “Mexifornia” but not “Chicongo.”

banks that don’t make enough prime loans to minorities

I got a letter yesterday from a credit card company that included boilerplate text saying they do not discriminate against people who are on welfare.

  29. And lastly, a Republican running for the presidency, schools fellow Republicans on how to deftly and efficiently handle the manipulations of the MSM

I think some Republicans are starting to catch on. You start asking the liberal interrogator questions instead of just answering their question straight off. Plus sometimes the question isn’t even a question, in which case they also have to respond with a question of their own, like “What makes you think that?”, “Why is that relevant?” etc.

    Gerald A (949d7d)

  30. also i think you people devalue besmirch and degrade both freedom and christendom when you point to “religious freedom” as a rationale for the sweet cake losers’ bigoted sociopathic and altogether rude behaviours

if you just invoked “individual freedom” as a rationale I’d be like okey dokey cool beans

people should be free to be contemptible

but this is not what you do

and I decry this in no uncertain terms

(an example of how i decry this follows)

    ok here we go

and a for reals believer in religious freedom woulda said okey dokey how these lesbians believe is not how i believe but no skin off my high-school-diploma-havin’ nuts to bake a cake cause of that has eff-all to do with my religion

  33. The city of Chicago itself sits on the Chicago Plain, a flat plain that was once the bottom of ancestral Lake Chicago. This plain has very little topographical relief, in fact, topographical relief is so unusual in the plain that what would be unnoticed hills and ridges in other locales have been given names.

    that’s kind of poignant, really

    happyfeet (831175)

  34. sweet cake losers’ bigoted sociopathic and altogether rude behaviours

That shtick of yours does get old after awhile, happyfeet, even more so when you yourself have often used the word “gay” disparagingly in this forum, and won’t come out and say whether you’ve had a boyfriend or would have a boyfriend—for reasons that presumably you and others in much of the public (who proclaim “it’s not right to pry into people’s privacy!”) will sympathize with. By contrast, you yourself and many people in general would never think it cringeworthy to casually ask just about any guy out there whether he has a girlfriend or wife and almost no guy would be hesitant to say publicly that he has a girlfriend (assuming he isn’t married) or wife.

I snicker when I think of all the liberals in America, in Hollywood in particular — even more so today than ever before — who treat the possible homosexuality (or bisexuality) of a celebrity (a male in particular) like it’s a guessing game, but a game that’s not analogous to guessing whether that same person is secretly a billionaire, or is a great philantrophist in private, or was class valedictorian and “most popular” during his or her high-school years.

The gut reactions behind this phenomenon mean quite a few people (including you too?) are “bigoted” and “sociopathic.”

  43. Celebrating the few positives is like asking people on a rapidly sinking ship to look on the bright side. One of the auxiliary generators is still providing enough power to keep the sodas cold.

This is the new WH spin on the Iran deal.

    http://hotair.com/archives/2015/07/17/white-house-warns-congress-if-you-block-this-iran-deal-iran-gets-everything-for-free/

You think you know that Obama sold out America’s interests in cutting this deal with Tehran, but you really don’t know the half of it.

Serious question: Is this a bigger affront to Congress’s authority than that executive mega-amnesty in November was? Normally I’d say that nothing could top the latter, but read this and tell me.

[Josh Earnest] predicted the international economic sanctions would collapse and Iran would get the economic benefits it has sought anyway — and noted that even if American sanctions stay in place Iran has far more at stake economically with sanctions from other countries around the world.

“The problem is Iran is going to get all that money and the United States doesn’t get anything for it,” he said, predicting Iran would get sanctions relief from the international community even if they don’t reduce their stockpile, centrifuges or all-but-dismantle their plutonium-producing reactor.

A vote to kill the deal is a “vote to allow Iran to get off scot-free and to get all the sanctions relief.”

The analysis that follows at Hot Air is good, and should be read, but they don’t get things quite right IMHO. But it simply verifies my own. The administration and Iran were negotiating together against the United States.

Here, the Hot Air analysis breaks down. This administration is giving the finger to the entire country, not just Congress.

Had they shown the same deference to the US legislature as they showed to the Iranian legislature then Josh Earnest could not be making this threat now.

It turns out, notes Noah Rothman, that the agreement acknowledges that Iran’s parliament must ratify the Additional Protocol of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty authorizing nuke inspections within 90 days after the UN Security Council approves the deal. But it doesn’t say anything about the U.S. Congress, which has the right under federal law signed by Obama himself to vote on this deal and block it if it can muster 67 votes of disapproval in the Senate. Which, of course, is by design: By cutting Congress out of the agreement and running to the UN, Obama has heaped even more pressure on congressional Democrats not to defy him on this by making them guilty of breaching international law if they do…

Umm, not quite. Obama is claiming the power to make on his own authority legally binding agreements on behalf of the US. This is his Zelaya moment, the one I’ve been talking about since his first foreign policy disaster, in which he sided with a President who did not believe himself bound by his own constitution.

Now Obama is threatening to use his State Department against his own country at the UN. He will be instructing his ambassador to vote to sanction the United States if Congress dares stand up to this unconstitutional power grab.

    This man is evil.

    And it will get worse.

    http://freebeacon.com/national-security/iran-bans-u-s-inspectors-from-all-nuclear-sites/

…Under the tenants of the final nuclear deal reached this week in Vienna, only countries with normal diplomatic relations with Iran will be permitted to participate in inspections teams organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The revelation of this caveat has attracted concern from some analysts who maintain that only American experts can be trusted to verify that Iran is not cheating on the deal and operating clandestine nuclear facilities.

The admission is the latest in a series of apparent concessions made by the United States to Iran under the deal. Other portions of the agreement include a promise by the United States to help Iran combat nuclear sabotage and threats to its program….

This is the grand bargain Obama has always been after. Restoring diplomatic relations with Iran. The nuclear issue was only a pretext. In fact, Obama has committed the US to helping it perfect its nuclear program. As even Obama admitted their breakout time will be reduced to zero eventually. And with our help!

So mark my words, the next ultimatum from Mean Girl is that the US must restore diplomatic relations with Iran to get American inspectors into the country. And anyone who opposes him is a war monger.

It will probably come after Iran is discovered cheating. But I can’t be sure of that.

It’s typical of this psychopath, though. It can’t be his fault; he didn’t negotiate a bad deal. It’s everybody else’s fault for not giving him what he wants. Like diplomatic relations with Iran.

I was at the Sox- Royals game at U.S. Cellular Field don’t you know. It was a hot day and a hot ticket because the White Sox organization is also celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Sox’ 2005 World Series championship with an action packed reunion weekend where most of those players and Ozzie came back to be feted. There was rain and some thunder but the game went on and on and on– until we lost finally in the 14th inning.

But when I got home (up further north) it was a obvious there had been a vicious storm while I was gone. Driveway and part of front yard flooded and a huge limb down from a willow tree that landed about 6 feet from the house. Also a skylight leaked real bad. Ugh.

  47. feets
if the bakers in Oregon trafficked in baby parts on the side, would you get along fine with them then??

It shouldn’t take more than a high school education to read Romans 1 in English and see why some Christians would decline to bake a wedding cake for a SSW.
    If one went to Greek school then they could read it in Greek without more than a high school diploma;
others would need at least some college to read it in Greek.

I don’t care what gender or gender of preference feets is,
He thinks SSM is great and that anybody who doesn’t agree is an idiot, so they should bake the cake whether they want to or not
Lots of people who went to college and grad school and professional school can still read Romans 1 in English and do not affirm that SSM is a good thing. If we owned bakeries, and felt that by baking a wedding cake explicitly for a same sex wedding celebration we were giving assent to the event, we would also decline to bake said cake. I suppose if they wanted to buy some nice tasty cakes in the multiple layer or sheet variety or both, and do with it whatever they wanted, well, I guess that would be fine.

If you don’t understand Romans 1, then maybe ask for some help. If you understand it and just disagree, that’s fine, but I think I have more confidence in the Apostle Paul’s understanding of following Jesus than yours.

  48. there’s lots of christian bakers what would never dream of turning matrimonial lesbians away from their door cakeless and un-baked for Mr. Dr.

Romans says nothing about baking cakes

the key thing about baking cakes (which Romans says NOTHING about)

is cracking the eggs to where the cake has no ittle bittle pieces of eggshell in it

and as I said Romans offers no guidance on this matter

and then there’s the question of mixing

i bought lil nephew guy a super duper stainless steel 6-quart commercial kitchen-aid

cause of he says he needed one to make a proper lemon chiffon cake (well he said he needed a “stand up mixer” – but I got the commercial one cause of my lil brudder can cater up a storm and I bet he can use it for to make some cornbread and such)

but lil nephew guy – he’s gonna use it to make me a right proper hummingbird cake come the end of the month

    he’s an awesome lil kid!

actually he’s like maybe a junior now

(he’s the one we worked real hard to steer away from the navy)

right now he’s on a mission for lutheran jesus in Detroit building houses for Unfortunate People (or somesuch – maybe he’s tearing houses down, given it’s Detroit)

later this summer he’ll go to his first gay wedding cause of one of his mom and dad’s friends is getting married

The Lord is going to have something to say about that, feets.

He had something to say about your hatred for Christians who obey his commandments, like those Oregon bakers you call ” illiterate cake-baking ig-pigs of Oregon,” “jesus-lovin gay-hatin cake-bakin picklehead,” and other hateful things on other threads.

    John 15:18

    The Hatred of the World
18″If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19″If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.…

    Matthew 10:22

    Comfort in Persecution
…21″Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 22″You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved. 23″But whenever they persecute you in one city, flee to the next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes.…

Based upon your reaction, and the reaction of the other fascists in Oregon, those bakers are on the right track.

Also based on your reaction, no offense but you’re not.

  55. ==The city of Chicago itself sits on the Chicago Plain, a flat plain that was once the bottom of ancestral Lake Chicago. This plain has very little topographical relief, in fact, topographical relief is so unusual in the plain that what would be unnoticed hills and ridges in other locales have been given names.==
Longwood Drive in the Beverly neighborhood is the ridge/shoreline of prehistoric Lake Chicago. And there’s the Beverly Country Club as a living reminder. .

The community adjacent to the Beverly Country Club was known as ‘The Ridge’, in reference to the meandering ridge that traverses part of the front nine and extends through the Dan Ryan Forest Preserve and along Longwood Drive for more than five miles until its terminus in Blue Island. It is often said that the second tee of the Beverly Country Club is the highest point in the city of Chicago. Prehistoric Lake Chicago is known to have extended to the basin which now comprises the sixth green, seventh tee, and second fairway. As this area had been the lake’s bed, blue clay is found below the surface. Nature contoured our back-nine beautifully when Lake Chicago deposited large sand dunes on its southern shore. If you were to dig down anywhere on that side, you would encounter this sand.

The US is well on its way to proving the theory that great nations have a shelf life that doesn’t extend too much beyond 200 years.

After a meeting Thursday with Williams, other local clergy and executives with Chevrolet, GM issued the following statement:

    http://www.militarytimes.com/story/military/2015/07/18/marine-recruiters-told-not–wear-uniforms-offices-closed/30353587/

The military services have taken swift action to increase security after Thursday’s shootings in Tennessee, even closing some facilities and telling Marine recruiters not to wear uniforms in public.

Defense Secretary Ash Cater approved immediate steps taken by the military branches to increase security and has told the services to get back to him by the end of next week with additional force protection measures, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said in a statement on Friday.

…One of the steps Carter approved was Marine Corps Recruiting Command’s decision to have recruiters not wear their military uniforms for now, a defense official said. The recruiting command also closed down all offices within 40 miles of the facilities in Chattanooga and increased the force protection condition level from “Bravo” to “Charlie.”

“Charlie” is the third highest security level. It indicates an incident has occurred or officials have evidence that terrorists are planning an attack. Security measures can include thorough vehicle inspections and requiring an escort to get on base, according to a pamphlet from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey…

This is what today’s “military” considers swift action. They increase security measures on base.

Gee, I guess that’s why these individual jihadists attack recruiting centers. Because they’re soft targets not on base.

Why stop at telling recruiters to stop wearing uniforms and recruit in civvies. The display of the American flag and those big bold letters at recruiting centers that say ARMY AIR FORCE NAVY MARINES will make these guys targets too. Why not just have them recruit under a white flag?

    Anything, just don’t arm them!

Everybody blamed Pamela Geller for “asking for it” by offending Muslims with her Muhammad art contest.

At the time I pointed out that the list of things that offend Muslims is nearly endless. But I specifically said that the “kuffar” wearing their military uniforms offends Muslims.

Well, thank the sweet baby Obama we’ve put an end that! But those flags will have to come down too.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the
NAVY AND MARINE CORPS MEDAL posthumously to

MASTER-AT-ARMS SECOND CLASS MARK A. MAYO
    UNITED STATES NAVY

for service as set forth in the following

    CITATION:

For heroism while serving at Naval Station Norfolk Security Detachment, Norfolk, Virginia on 24 March 2014. While performing his duties as Chief of the Guard, Petty Officer Mayo was alerted to a suspicious individual walking towards USS MAHAN (DDG 72) on Pier 1, Naval Station Norfolk. Petty Officer Mayo pursued the individual up the brow of the ship while both he and the Quarterdeck watch-standers directed the individual to stop and provide identification. Failing to comply, the individual approached the Quarterdeck, attacked and disarmed the Petty Officer of the Watch. After boarding the ship, Petty Officer Mayo realized that the Petty Officer of the Watch no longer had control of her weapon. With complete and total disregard for his own personal safety, Petty Officer Mayo immediately placed himself between the Petty Officer of the Watch and the assailant. While fearlessly engaging the assailant and shielding the Petty Officer of the Watch, Petty Officer Mayo was fatally wounded. His exceptionally brave actions saved the lives of four watch-standers and ensured the safety of the entire crew of USS MAHAN (DDG 72). By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Petty Officer Mayo prevented the loss of lives, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    For the President,

Precisely, happyfascist. That’s why it’s laughable when you claim the right to dictate to Christians what they must do in the name of “not being rude” or whatever.

You walk up to Christians and demand them to help you say “eff you jesus.” That’s precisely what the fascists and your gaystapo are demanding. You and they said eff you jesus a long time ago, and now you demand the same from people who haven’t.
