“Vote for Me Because I’m Black” Judicial Candidate Is Appointed to the Bench by Governor Brown

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:03 pm

Remember Songhai “Sunny” Armstead? I told you about her in this post. She ran for office telling black audiences things like this:

And you guys have seen who — I’m sure we all know who’s in our jails and who comes before our judges in court, right? It’s people who look a lot like the people in this room. People who look a lot like me. . . . There are 15 open seats right now. I am the only African American running. There’s only one Chicana running. Can you guess who else is running? Are there people who care about the people in this room? Probably not. I can’t speak before them, but probably not. . . . I’m a judge for you. . . . We have black legislators, we have a black president. We don’t have black judges.

and this:

I walk around in an environment that’s mostly white males and they’re looking for me to fall every single day.

She will now be a judge. She was appointed to the bench yesterday by Governor Jerry Brown.

Brown appointed eight new judges in Los Angeles: Supervising Deputy City Attorney Songhai Miguda-Armstead; private practitioner Timothy Dillon; Burke, Williams and Sorensen partner Ronald Frank; Deputy District Attorney Julian Recana; Steptoe and Johnson LLP partner Lawrence Riff; Irell & Manella partner Laura Seigle; Second District appellate court attorney Natalie Stone; and Farmers Insurance Group attorney Lisa Sepe-Wiesenfeld.

Usually, judges pledge to be a judge for everyone, not just for one racial group. Usually, judges don’t tarnish entire groups of people (like white males) by saying they are “looking for me to fall every single day.”

But Songhai “Sunny” Armstead was not the usual judicial candidate.

Let’s hope she develops a sense of judicial fairness on the bench.

I am not optimistic.

On a positive note, congratulations to my friend Julian Recana. He’ll be great.

  1. I do not intend to try any of my cases in her courtroom, wherever that may end up being.

I believe she is already prejudiced against me. Because I am a white male, she thinks I am looking for her to fall every day.

How could I appear before such a person? I think it’s clear that I cannot.

Luckily, California allows one challenge to a judge per case.

  2. I say all this, of course, as the disclaimer says on the sidebar, in my personal capacity and not in my capacity as a public official.

    Oh, blah, blah.

Songhai Armstead, the only race (or “race”) you give a flying flip about is the liberal one. Simply put, your concern about a person’s racial or ethnic (etc) background takes a back seat if he or she isn’t a liberal and is instead — most certainly — a staunch conservative.

Believe you me, if every black judge were like Clarence Thomas, Armstead would start promoting a “back to Africa” movement—yea, I’m being very snarky, but the reality of the situation with leftists like Armstead isn’t that far from the truth.

Actually, she’s more likely to be against you because you’re not a loony liberal.

  10. affirmative action is what it is. Just hope you don’t have to appear before her. If being white wasn’t enough, blogging about her should wrap things up.

  15. Seriously folks. The GOVERNOR of CALIFORNIA who is RICH and WHITE appointed this garbage.
It’s PSYCHOLOGICALLY BIZARRE. Jerry Brown is not honest, and POWER is his goal. Consolidating more of the CROCODILES, who will NEVER BITE HIM nor his GRANDCHILDREN.

  16. Jim. Do you think this IDIOT has the IRS on her resume??

  17. Off topic, but this really hit home for me…

“Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he’s been robbed. The fact is that most putts don’t drop, most beef is tough, most children grow up to just be people, most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration, most jobs are more often dull than otherwise… the trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride.”

  18. Face it.

Racial-Grievance Politics is the present AND the future of America.

I just read the Washington Post article by William H. Frey (good grief, no relation I hope!) titled “Stop Laughing at Donald Trump”. This guy tells us “the United States is undergoing a demographic diversity explosion” and we bitter old whites (the once-upon-a-time majority of yesteryear, who long to be important again, but of course never will be) are nativist, racist-y clingers who simply can’t adjust. Trump is a harbinger of the new “politics of fear” which will become much more commonplace since polls show “more than half of white baby boomers and seniors believed that increasing numbers of newcomers from other countries represented a threat to traditional American values”.

He doesn’t say (doesn’t have to, y’know?) that racisty-y divisive politicians will presumably do more of this pandering to us pasty-white Americans’ fear of Vibrant Diversity. But he does mention that “Democrats cannot make the politics of fear go away simply by courting the young-adult and minority voting blocs”. He’s frustrated that “A disproportionate number of Hispanics and Asians are either too young to vote, are not citizens or are not registered, qualities that will not change for several more election cycles.” Aw, shucks.

He sounds disappointed that our major metropolitan centers aren’t already Calcutta-in-America. God knows, his Lib-Progg brethren are trying SO hard: Dearbornistan; Little Somalia near St. Paul; Mexico del Norte in California … and we Pasty-Whites are racist if we object. Oh, yeah: we’re nativist, too.

    Bad Pasty-Whites. Bad!!

  19. Gordon Hinkley. Great reference.

  20. Times have changed. I would not enter a courtroom without a bullet proof vest in front of a racist judge.

  21. Whenever I’m feeling unhappy, I just try to think of nice things. What kind of things? Well, let me see. Nice things. . . . Daffodils. Green meadows. Skies full of stars.

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles And warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages Tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

  22. Rose Bird could not be reached for comment, fortunately.

    Mike K (90dfdc)

  23. There are so many attorneys that should request that she not hear their case.

    JD (3b5483)

  24. “Pension payments to Chicago public union employees have become so high that todayall the property taxes paid by the households of Chicago go exclusively to pensions. The operating expenses are paid by additional taxes on things from packs of cigarettes, to gasoline, sales tax, and cable TV bills. Given these facts about how Chicago’s property taxes are used, it’s not surprising that its new Republican governor wants to freeze property taxes to rescue the middle class’s paychecks from Democrats.”

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  25. Of course when they say we fear their ideology is “a threat to traditional American values” they never acknowledge the truth, that we are correct. They do mean to destroy our culture and replace it with something built on revenge and the will to power.

Look at how the culture of California has changed over the years. Neighborliness has been replaced by aggression, and a pervasive disregard for law is accepted. I see ads on buses saying, red light means stop, because apparently our Newest Americans don’t stop. I had to quit a job after the immigrant boss handed me a bag of money “so we can avoid taxes” for my pay. Look at how the media ignores the failures of race-dominated cities like Detroit.

    Patricia (5fc097)

  26. and we Pasty-Whites are racist if we object.

But of course non-pasty-white liberals like Barack and Michelle rarely, if ever, end up living in the disasters they’ve helped incubate. They certainly don’t send their children to schools in the middle of such no-go zones and carefully avoid spending too much time in communities reflecting “Obama’s son if he had a son,” or the dynamics of “if the US can’t go to Mexico, Mexico will come to the US.”

But the compassion of liberals is as pure as the driven snow. Yes, uh-huh, most certainly.

  29. I have to wonder how much trouble could be caused by a percentage of White lawyers petitioning to have the Judge recused from their cases simply on the grounds of her publc racism. If it became a regular feature of her tenure in the bench, if it were raised every time somebody white needed to appeal any verdict from her court.

    Mike Stewart (ce52a6)

  32. Yes, Mark, I don’t blame him, but if we have to pay, then everybody should have to pay. The authorities are ignoring the cash economy because it’s PC.

    Patricia (5fc097)

  33. Hmm.

My father had a friend, a defense lawyer in Chicago, who’d served as a court-appointed attorney for black defendants. (He once beat a murder rap for Jeff Fort, then head of the infamous P Stone Nation, later the El Rukns.) I heard him discuss such cases with some other lawyers. They all agreed that if one of these perps came into court and saw a black man on the bench, he’d say “Get me a honky judge.” Apparently, many white judges would just think ‘This n—-r says that n—-r cut him with a razor. What do I care?‘ – “Six months probation; next case.”

Suppose she put it this way? “We need judges who care what criminals are doing in our neighborhoods.” The implication is obvious, but is it necessarily a bad one?

  35. failmerica has a whole p.o.s president who ran on a “vote for me just cause i’m black” campaign – twice!

and what ended up happening was he used the office to orchestrate the genocide of Israel
