New York Times Caves, Ted Cruz Book To Appear At #7 On Bestseller List

Today:

Five days after accusing The New York Times of bias, secrecy and foul play, Ted Cruz is finally getting what he wanted: a highly coveted spot on the paper’s bestseller list.

Cruz’s memoir, “A Time For Truth,” will appear at No. 7 on the Times’ list for hardcover nonfiction, reflecting its second-week sales, a Times spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday. The Texas senator’s book had not been included on the list for its first week, on the grounds that its sales had been driven by “strategic bulk purchases.”

Times spokesperson Eileen Murphy said that the newspaper made no changes to its selection process, and so the fact that Cruz’s book is being included now suggests a rise in individual purchases, spurred by his public battle with the paper.

“This week’s NYT best seller list was arrived at using the same process as last week’s – and the week before that,” Murphy wrote. “That process involves a careful analysis of data, and is not influenced in any way by the content of a book, or by pressure from publishers or book sellers.”

Murphy reiterated the company line:

“Our approach serves Times readers by authenticating broadly popular books through the confidential reporting of a wide range of retailers,” Murphy said Wednesday. “In order to avoid compromising that process, we do not disclose who reports sales to us.”

No response yet from the Cruz camp, however, Ted Cruz is scheduled to be on Megyn Kelly’s show tonight to discuss this turnaround, among other things.

  1. Hello.

  2. That must have really hurt to capitulate, while employing a weak-suck, NYT style defense.

  3. they act like being on the carefully and imaginatively cultivated new york times bestseller list is some kind of big prize instead of the capricious whimsy of half-drunk obamasluts

I wonder what all the leftists at the New York Times are more chagrined by? That their paper’s explanation for the omission stretched credulity or — more likely — that their employer has unwittingly enhanced Ted Cruz’s book sales?

  5. Ted Cruz is sidling up a little too close to Trump for my taste.

  6. Why is it that I believe that they had a finger on the scales last week?

Presumption: The Press lies, lies about lying and believes no one will notice.

  9. Why is it that I believe that they had a finger on the scales last week?

Because it’s a reasonable conclusion, Jakee. If the NYT wanton had simply said that the NYT had its own methodology and the book would appear on the list if and when it met NYT’s standards for sales, that would have been something no one could argue with. But she threw in the gratuitous crap about strategic bulk sales and it was a dead giveaway that she was just being a nasty pickle.

  10. he should go to the nearest Dollar store, and buy them a nice thank you card…

    😎

i guess they think it’s still the 1970s, where they can do whatever they want, and get away with it.

I think even better, he should openly greet the news of the NYT capitulation with a dismissive “meh”.

  14. Does the NYT Best Seller List report itself as leading the “Fiction” category?

    askeptic (efcf22)

  15. NYT was clearly lying – none of the biggest retailers who report to NYT found any such bulk sales, and others like Wal-Mart and Target don’t report to them.

They were caught lying, and are trying to lie their way out of it. If not, show us where the bulk sales were!

  16. Well I dunno. When I read about this New York Times nonsense “strategic bulk sales”, I made an individual decision to go out and buy the book. I’m an Amazon Prime member and went to Amazon to buy. Usually I can get whatever I want in less than two days. Now Amazon tells me that it will be three to four weeks before I can have a copy.

What does that tell me? It says there’s a heck of a lot of demand for the book. So that “vast left wing conspiracy” of BS and merde over at the Times inspired at least one purchase of the book. Heck, I might even read it. The NYT action here would be called an “own goal” in soccer.

  17. @katephillips so much for your left-wing credibility. liar-liar, pants around cankles. (https://twitter.com/ColonelHaiku/status/621670722843246592?s=17)

I think Jake already agrees with you, and the question in his post was reflecting back to a NYT apologist in our midst.

  19. This is a great book, so I decided to order a second copy of Cruz’s book to give to a family member. I used Patterico’s Amazon link to buy it but apparently it’s sold out since it won’t be available for shipment until July 19.

  20. Hopefully you won’t have to wait 3 weeks, Comanche Voter. Apparently Harper Collins is sending more copies.

  21. I wonder what Trump and Cruz talked about, too, Colonel Haiku.

    DRJ (1dff03)

  22. this is better but it’s not good enough

i’m boycotting this book at *least* until it goes to #1 and maybe even then
