R.I.P. Chris Squire

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 10:55 pm

The Yes bassist was just 67. He succumbed to cancer.

A couple of years ago, Mrs. P. and I saw a new incarnation of Yes with Jon Davison as the lead vocalist. They played the entire albums Close to the Edge, The Yes Album, and Going for the One. Great show. Squire was everything you would have wanted to see.

I did not think I wouldn’t get a chance to see him perform again.

  1. I saw him play with most of the members of yes in college as well. I’m thinking 1987?

  4. I can feel no sense of measure
    No illusions as we take
    Refuge in young man’s pleasure
Breaking down the dreams we make
    real

  5. The Forum, Montreal. April 1991 (Union Tour). Crowd won’t let them leave so, as their last encore, they come out and play “Gimme Some Lovin” by the Spencer Davis Group. Crowd went gonzo-ballistic.

Last show I saw in the old Montreal Forum (RIP). A building with so many collective memories deserved a better fate than ending up as a multi-megaplex.

  7. 1973… the Fabulous Forum… great seats… Albert Hammond has mercifully left the stage after singing “it never rains in Southern California” , the lights are up… swarthy fat guy sitting next to me uses his belly as a table as he uses a rolling machine to roll joints… hippie/college student crowd… frisbees… haze hangs over crowd… Lights go out, loud cheering erupts… mirrored ball shoots out fragmented light as it revolves up near the ceiling… lead and bass guitars crank into Close to the Edge, crowd goes even more bonkers… hang on for the ride…

  8. And I forgot the birds chirping synthesizer noises adding to the bedlam…

  9. Yeah, we saw their concert at the Grove in Anaheim. All three albums and Roundabout as the encore. Great show. They walked onto the stage at 8pm and left at 11:15pm. Hard-working dudes. RIP.
