NOW To President Obama: That’s “Senator” Warren To You, Buster (Video Added)

Filed under: General — Dana @ 6:36 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Today President Obama was accused of sexism by the National Organization for Women for referring to Sen. Elizabeth Warren… by her first name. Yes. Elizabeth. The accusation came after the president commented about Warren’s criticisms of his free-trade deal:

“The truth of the matter is that Elizabeth is, you know, a politician like everybody else,” he said. “And you know, she’s got a voice that she wants to get out there. And I understand that. And on most issues, she and I deeply agree. On this one, though, her arguments don’t stand the test of fact and scrutiny.”

Responding, NOW president Terry O’Neill:

“Yes, I think it is sexist,” O’Neill said. “I think the president was trying to build up his own trustworthiness on this issue by convincing us that Senator Warren’s concerns are not to be taken seriously. But he did it in a sexist way.”

O’Neill said Obama’s “clear subtext is that the little lady just doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”

“I think it was disrespectful,” O’Neill said.

(Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) also thought the reference was sexist).

To be fair to Obama, Elizabeth Warren doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

And what, exactly, should they have expected from a candidate whose unofficial campaign slogan in 2008 was “Bros before Hos”?

  7. I had the misfortune of hearing Obama make the above quote. I don’t know if it was sexist or not, but it was sure as heck dripping in condescension. I was shocked at his tone. Truly undignified.

Fauxcahontas had the last laugh, though: Obama had to deal with Democrats — his former Senate colleagues! — derailing his attempt to get fast track negotiation authority. I don’t see how his condescension is going to win them over, but one of the noted traits of Dear Leader is his unshakable belief that he has a monopoly on the best ideas.

What does he have to be thinking now that his own party has concluded that there is as much benefit in opposing him as in supporting him? He is the lamest of lame ducks.

Counting this trade deal problem and the conference at Camp David which was a bust, there are a remarkable number of coincidences that have broken en masse against Obola in the last few weeks. What are the odds? Hillary! would be all over this with claims of a “right wing conspiracy”.

  26. I’ve noted before a tendency to call women by their first names, while men get called by their surnames. And yes, I think it is often sexist. To determine whether it is in this instance one would have to look through a sample of 0bama’s mentions of other politicians with whom he is presumably on first-name terms, and see how he refers to them in public. If he regularly calls Reid Harry, for instance, then he can get a pass on this one.
