Scandal Over Clinton Foundation Intensifies

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:40 am

Sean Davis at The Federalist sums up the takeaway nicely:

A blockbuster report in the New York Times today details how Hillary Clinton’s non-profit organization raked in millions from the Russian nuclear industry while Hillary was negotiating a deal to allow the Russians to acquire Uranium One, one of the world’s largest uranium mining companies.

From that NYT article:

[T]he sale gave the Russians control of one-fifth of all uranium production capacity in the United States. Since uranium is considered a strategic asset, with implications for national security, the deal had to be approved by a committee composed of representatives from a number of United States government agencies. Among the agencies that eventually signed off was the State Department, then headed by Mr. Clinton’s wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

As the Russians gradually assumed control of Uranium One in three separate transactions from 2009 to 2013, Canadian records show, a flow of cash made its way to the Clinton Foundation. Uranium One’s chairman used his family foundation to make four donations totaling $2.35 million. Those contributions were not publicly disclosed by the Clintons, despite an agreement Mrs. Clinton had struck with the Obama White House to publicly identify all donors. Other people with ties to the company made donations as well.

And shortly after the Russians announced their intention to acquire a majority stake in Uranium One, Mr. Clinton received $500,000 for a Moscow speech from a Russian investment bank with links to the Kremlin that was promoting Uranium One stock.

Barack Obama needs to be asked whether he exempted these transactions from being disclosed — or reported to the IRS. Yeah, turns out Hil and Bill forgot to tell the IRS too:

Hillary Clinton’s family’s charities are refiling at least five annual tax returns after a Reuters review found errors in how they reported donations from governments, and said they may audit other Clinton Foundation returns in case of other errors.

“Errors”!

For three years in a row beginning in 2010, the Clinton Foundation reported to the IRS that it received zero in funds from foreign and U.S. governments, a dramatic fall-off from the tens of millions of dollars in foreign government contributions reported in preceding years.

Those entries were errors, according to the foundation: several foreign governments continued to give tens of millions of dollars toward the foundation’s work on climate change and economic development through this three-year period.

Whoops!

Meanwhile, Bill’s speaking fees doubled and even tripled after Hillary became Secretary of State. I can’t see any potential for corruption there, can you??

But just how involved was Hillary, really, in all this? All we need to do is just check her emails, and then we can . . .

Oh. Right.

Nothing to see here.

  1. I was seriously considering embracing Hillary as a credible alternative to such candidates as Jeb Bush and Marco Sleazio

but I gotta tell you I’m increasingly uncomfortable with what I’m learning about her

we need to hear more from that governor guy – the sleeve-averse one Drudge likes so much from an obscure eastern state

  2. Bill seems to be assuming the family obligation as bagman. Hillary was in charge of this when Bill was in office. Now, he is returning the favor.

  3. or reported to the IRS. Yeah, turns out Hil and Bill forgot to tell the IRS too:

How special. And surprising too since a bigger, greedier, more corrupt IRS is going to be Obama’s shining glory and legacy.

  10. Added to this is the report that only 15% of donations went to program. Half went to salaries and most of the rest went to “miscellaneous.”

I also would like to see something about employees and their function. There seem to be an awful lot of them. I fully expect that there are VERY generous vacation and accrual policies that would allow employees to spend almost all of 2016 “on vacation”. Might even work a campaign.

  11. Does anyone remember the scandal that forced Jim Wright to resign as Speaker? Apparently he had written a book and people seeking favor would buy several cases. They still had shame back then.

There is a funny story about Khrushchev’s autobiography. Soviet embassies ordered thousands of copies but no one wanted them. At one point a secret Soviet van was stopped by western agents thinking it was transporting secret material. It turned out that it contained thousands of copies of Khrushchev’s book.

  16. In 2012 mitt romney got 61% of white votes and 55% of independents in 2004 that would of won him the election ;but in 2012 that got him second place! Because President Obama got 96% of blacks 73% of hispanics and 77% of asians and native americans and 5,000,000 more minority kids will turn 18 voting age by nov.2016 and these voters care about immigration and racism not e-mails are hillary clintons foundation. It is sad and pathetic that the only thing Perry and his democrat co-conspirators have left is racism and hate. A real political party isn’t built on either of these two things, yet all through our history the democrats have relied on racism, slavery, Jim Crow, and class hatred. From Lester Maddox to Harry Reid all are keeping down the blacks and now the Hispanics. But the good news is every month 3,000,000 minority people realize their worst enemy is the democrat party. And these enlightened minorities will help carry the Great Nobel Republican Party to a victory this election which will last twenty years. Never again will the democrats and scum like Perry be able to exploit minorities!

  39. They hid tens of millions of dollars from the prying eyes of the IRS. That was an “error”.
Russian companies that just happen to want to buy a large portion of the US uranium market start throwing millions at the Clintons, and shockingly, her State Dept approved of it.
Another one of her huge donors has been illegally engaged in trade with Iran.
And she deleted all her emails, illegally, and I would bet the hard drive goes missing.
She is a normal everyday kind of person. Yup, she is.

She really handled the rollout of her campaign with skill. Clearly since she filled the Scooby van with gas, and ate a burrito, she has the chops to be President.

  41. This is kind of funny. There are two clauses in the Constitution that people refer to as an “Emoluments Clause”

    1) Article 1, Section 6, Clause 2, aka the “Ineligibility Clause”

No Senator or Representative shall, during the Time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil Office under the Authority of the United States, which shall have been created, or the Emoluments whereof shall have been increased during such time; and no Person holding any Office under the United States, shall be a Member of either House during his Continuance in Office.

    2) Artilce 1, Section 9, Clause 8

No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.

Hillary has violated both of them.

    1) According to Volokh and others, she was a Senator at the time the pay of the Secretary of State was raised, and was still in that same term as Senator when she was appointed to be Secretary of State.

    2) This thing now.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  42. This would be bad for a greedy, evil, racist Republican, but we all know that Democrats have Hearts of Gold ™ and cannot be bought. Not even grifters like the Clintons.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  43. For all the caterwauling about the Vast Right wing Conspiracy and the Koch brothers, this is the progressive left taking a torch to the Hillary!’16 campaign. We may not like the Clintons, and they are as crooked as there has ever been. But Bill Clinton was pragmatic (if sleazy).Obama and his minions want hard core lefty to take over, not some split the difference friend of Goldman Sachs.

Many middle class and working class(dare I say-WHITE) American might have given Clinton a look based on the fact that the economy was okay during Clinton I. If the Dems nominate O’Malley or Fauxachoantas, this gives the GOP a chance if they embrace some sensible policies-taking a giant step back from America World Police and insane wars, demanding trade policies that protect industries and workers, embracing limited conservative governance, getting spending and debt under control and enforcing the border. But if the GOP instead thinks babbling about “family values” and acting like the tough guy on the international stage is a winning hand, well, good luck with that.

  44. If the NY Times is running this, Hillary is in big trouble. That means they have decided to oppose her, otherwise they would bury the story somewhere after the Dining Section. (“5 New Ways to Cook Artichokes” followed by “Evil Republicans Raise New Scandal To Stop First Woman President”).

  45. Huh, Foundation and Clinton spokespeople lied to NYT Reporter about Giustra meeting with Clintons at their Chappaqua house. 50. Kevin-

Problem is a huge chunk of the Progs will never forgive anyone who dares cross The One. And this is the corner the Clintons painted themselves into since 2008.

Also doesn’t help they’re total sleazebags. Selling American uranium mines to Russia?

    Bugg (bd9445)

  51. Many middle class and working class(dare I say-WHITE) American might have given Clinton a look based on the fact that the economy was okay during Clinton I.

Americans who buy into that (ie, don’t understand what really undergirded those years) or get pangs of dreamy-eyed nostalgia for the late 1990s are one step away from those folks who proclaim, “but Mussolini kept the trains running on time,!” or “but Castro provides us with free healthcare!” or “but Hitler at least wanted Europe to treat us Germans fairly and with respect!”

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  54. I can’t believe the media, especially the New York Times, would cover this story so aggressively without getting the approval from someone close to Obama. In fact, I think this is a vast left-wing conspiracy to create doubts about Hillary and open the door for Obama’s choice, Warren. He may not be able to have a third term but he’s too young and arrogant to stop politics altogether.

    DRJ (e80d46)

  55. so is Bernie Sanders throwing his hat into the Presidential race good or bad for H.C ?

I think good – makes her seem more centrist when compared to the Socialist Sanders.
