Jonathan Chait: Hillary Isn’t That Unpopular
Jonathan Chait has a column titled Why Hillary Clinton Is Probably Going to Win the 2016 Election. Chait lists 6 reasons that he believes Hillary! will win. Do they center around the appeal of Hillary? Um, not hardly. Chait’s argument, summarized, is that demographics will save Democrats from the fact that she is a lackluster candidate. Here are the reasons listed by Chait:
1. The Emerging Democratic Majority is real.
2. No, youngsters are not turning Republican.
3. Clinton isn’t that unpopular.
I hear that one said in the voice of Eeyore. Can’t you just feel the enthusiasm?
4. Obama is trending up.
5. Is it time for a change? [Re: “voter exhaustion.”]
6. There’s no alternative.
That last one sounds better if you say it with heavy German accent: zerr ees no alTERnateev.
In truth, this election will be a good test of Chait’s basic thesis, which is that the Democrats have a majority locked in so tightly, they can win even with the least appealing candidate in memory.
I think there’s a chance they might. In fact, I’d like to add a couple more to Chait’s list:
7. The leftist media bump.
Big Media is always willing to shill for the leftist, burying the stories against the Democrat and making up/exaggerating the stories against the Republican. You know it and I know it, and it’s worth a lot of votes. And finally:
8. Hillary is a woman.
People like being a part of history, and voting for Hillary is a chance to participate in bringing the world the first woman U.S. president. I believe shallow reasoning such as this played a significant role in Obama’s margin of victory, and it will happen again in 2016. It will not matter that she is a continuation of dynastic politics; a liar; shrill; an opportunist; unaccomplished; you name it. Say it with me: First Woman President!
Wonderful.

In fact, she might avoid some big mistakes!
I’m afraid that is true. However, she will not be able to resist the lure of campaigning, as much as she hates it.
She is a real bitch, as Gary Aldrich’s book made clear back in 1998. We’ll see how well she hides that.

This nation’s birthday should be switched from July 4 to April 15, in salute to what this nation has become well beyond its 200th year, with its inside- and outside-the-beltway corruption (both social and economic) and greed (from the public sector and beyond).

bobathome (ef0d3a) — 4/13/2015 @ 8:44 am9. Democrat control of urban centers including: design of ballots (confusing and contestable if needed); misaligned electronic voting machines that default to Democrats; VEVO campaigns (Vote Early Vote Often) including recruitment of illegal immigrant participants (6% vote); faulty perforations on punch cards allowing chad experts to “clarify” intent of voters; judicial intervention preventing photo ID’ing of voters; and all-absentee ballot systems (as in Washington State) that allow rejection of most overseas military votes for one reason or another.

Can you imagine what the media would be doing if it was “Darth Cheney” or Rumsfeld who had a private email server? There would be nothing else on the front page until resignation or voted out of office.
Either Rubio or Cruz as the “first Hispanic president” would be far superior no matter what their faults; though the idea of stooping to identity politics is revolting, to have someone who is actually somewhat qualified makes it acceptable if necessary.
But then the “Hispanic” identity is not at all monolithic. People of Puerto Rican or Mexican heritage may not identify with a “Cuban-American”.
But at least they can habla Espanol.
And even if Jeb Bush has some ties into the Hispanic population, I don’t see it.

In a debate situation with Hillary, Cruz would alternate between brutal, charming, deeply informative, and humor. Stand By Your Man.
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 11:37 amAgreed, Steve.
On the debates… Hillary did absolutely nothing that I can recall to distinguish herself in the 2007-2008 cycle. She’s earned the “Trite” label.
Colonel Haiku (2601c0) — 4/13/2015 @ 11:38 amNobody knows what the future will bring.

MD in Philly (not in Philly at the moment) (deca84) — 4/13/2015 @ 11:42 amIf she hadn’t hitched herself to the Clinton name nobody would pay six figures to listen to her crap.
So I’ve got to give her credit for that. She married up.
The dumbfounding thing is we may get her as preezy. And if we do, it will be for two reasons.
1) Her genitalia.
2) Her last name.
And if that happens, this country deserves everything it’s going to get.
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 11:44 amPoint #1, Steve… at this point, WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?!?!
Colonel Haiku (2601c0) — 4/13/2015 @ 11:47 amYour brain says how could any sentient human being vote for her, yet your heart, sadly, knows what this country, and the Democratic machine, is capable of. When the IRS scandal broke you thought well that’s the end of that, yet they were emboldened and no-one has been punished. You think here comes Trey Gowdy spouting fire and brimstone, but what has he achieved? Absolutely nothing. Sometimes I despair for the future. Today is one of those times.
Gazzer (8d02a8) — 4/13/2015 @ 11:52 amIf that’s the case they’ll be joining a lot of seemingly intelligent men. Most people want to be accepted. If they can be convinced that the smart, cool people espouse certain opinions, then eventually they can be beaten into submission and adopt them. Intelligence isn’t any defense.

Well said, young man!
Colonel Haiku (2601c0) — 4/13/2015 @ 3:19 pmSadly, he is still a rat bastard, as good as that line was.
Gazzer (8d02a8) — 4/13/2015 @ 3:28 pmHe may be a rat bastard. But he could also be the best we can hope for.
Rat bastard republicans. They’re all we have to work with.
http://www.politico.com/story/2015/04/mccain-kerry-is-delusional-on-iran-116836.html
Funny. I could have told you Kerry was delusional years ago, before he was SecState. Back when he was praising Assad as a reformer. And praising Syria in 2010 for supporting an Arab League proposal for settling the Arab-Israeli conflict.
When, Syria wasn’t supporting the proposal. In fact, the Syrian government was threatening other Arab states with violence if they did support it. Yet Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was giving them a shout out for all their help. Mind boggling.
And yet…
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3150227/posts
Three Senators voted nay. And as much as I appreciate my contingent, Cornyn and Cruz, being two of those nay votes I can’t find any record of anyone voting against Kerry’s confirmation because he is, in fact, an idiot.
Now, McCain has noticed that Kerry is delusional. Just like Rubio finally figured out that Obama wasn’t going to enforce immigration laws. So therefore going forward with the Gang of Eight bill wasn’t a good idea.
When, stop me if I’m wrong, the only reason they produced the Gang of Eight bill was because Obama was blackmailing Congress by not enforcing immigration law? I’m supposed to fall for this.
But he might be better than the alternatives when everything shakes out.

Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 4:02 pmAs an Arizonan I apologize to the nation for Flake and McCain. In fact if McC does run, not only will I not vote for him, I will vote Dem for the only time in my life to get him out. Where’s my danged fence?
Gazzer (8d02a8) — 4/13/2015 @ 4:09 pmwell Flake has been flakey for a while, going back to when he was the Castro’s BFF.

With the “deal” Iran keeps all its nuclear infrastructure and gets sophisticated air defense systems from Russia. Because no more sanctions.
We get lies from our own administration.

I’m taking it, then, that according to David Corn that audio of Hillary! yukking it up about defending a child rapist she knew to be guilty, and helping him beat the charge, is fair game.
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 4:23 pmwell Corn, is properly snarkworthy,
narciso (ee1f88) — 4/13/2015 @ 4:24 pm“Social issues are pocketbook issues.”
Steve57 and Kevin M – You two are welcome to put them at the top of your lists for evaluating candidates. I don’t see it the same way. Have fun discussing it with happyfeet and Gil.
daleyrocks (bf33e9) — 4/13/2015 @ 4:25 pmyes, that’s why Obama pretended to be against same sex marriage, until he evolved,
narciso (ee1f88) — 4/13/2015 @ 4:27 pmhttp://freebeacon.com/politics/hillary-clinton-speaks-about-defense-of-child-rapist/
But Ted Cruz was a well-paid private attorney who defended clients who were found guilty of wrongdoing.
I can hardly wait to be accused of “War On Women” and a guy who hates his own grandma when I hear that, look at the Democrat, and say, “Wait a sec…”
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 4:28 pmPlus, remember the kerfuffle when the media said Bush 41 was confused by supermarket scanners? (He wasn’t, they were demonstrating a new technology that could retrieve damaged numbers.) How about Hillary has neither driven nor pumped gas in 20 years. Should be plenty of stories about that, huh?
Gazzer (8d02a8) — 4/13/2015 @ 4:41 pmWhile I’m told marriage is a fundamental right, and I listen to the lectures from judges who tell me how I’m denying something important to gay people out of rank bigotry, I find I can’t simultaneously hold the opinion that marriage is important and that marriage is unimportant.
It occurs to me that an institution that is fundamental to society might be, you know, fundamental. And it might be that how an organizing principle on which society is based determines what that society ends up paying for.
I’m just crazy that way.
OK, got it. I’m supposed to be unconcerned about social issues. Only right wing nutcases are concerned about social issues. But then, since when has the left allowed me to be unconcerned about social issues?
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 4:41 pmhttp://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2015/04/theres-something-about-hillary.php
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 4:53 pmI know I always wear my sunglasses indoors when I stop at a fast food joint…
Gazzer (8d02a8) — 4/13/2015 @ 4:58 pmI really would rather be wallowing on the couch in my underwear, watching the Brazilian women’s team play Olympic beach volleyball. Not talking to Gil about religion or Mark about gay sechs.
But the people who say I can’t own a pizza parlor unless I cater gay weddings won’t let me forget about social issues.
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 5:11 pm“OK, got it. I’m supposed to be unconcerned about social issues. Only right wing nutcases are concerned about social issues. But then, since when has the left allowed me to be unconcerned about social issues?”
Steve57 – If you think entitlements are the issues happyfeet was referring to Republicans being socially backward on back in comment #24 where this discussion started, you are dumber than Gil or just looking for one of your usual argument clinics.
daleyrocks (bf33e9) — 4/13/2015 @ 5:28 pmNo, daley. I don’t believe happyfeets thinks that far ahead.
So are you saying no one else should?
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 5:32 pmthese ruinous entitlement programs are destroying the moral tapestry of this once great country can I get an amen brother daley
happyfeet (831175) — 4/13/2015 @ 5:32 pm“So are you saying no one else should?”
Steve57 – I’m suggesting you can spare me your gale force bloviating because I was not talking about the tangent you were going off on.
daleyrocks (bf33e9) — 4/13/2015 @ 5:35 pmA big part of Barack Obama’s fundamental transformation already had been accomplished when the social-issue obsessed left had harangued the GOP into adopting the position that no one cares about social issues.
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 5:36 pmActually it’s the other way around.
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 5:39 pmsocial issues = first whirl problems
and this sad declining banana republic and its food stamp multiplier effect economy where you don’t get paid interest on your savings has real actual serious problems aside from policing uteruses and decrying the sinfulness of the homosexual
don’t tell Mike Pence though
poor lil whizzer is trapped in a whirl he just do not understand
happyfeet (831175) — 4/13/2015 @ 5:42 pmHow does the left get away with declaring a hug that occurs without prior express consent to be sexual assault and accusing conservatives of wanting to police uteruses?
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 5:47 pmI forget the exact occasion, but a reporter was covering a Hillary! event and Hillary!’s staff assigned a minder to her that followed her into bathrooms and would stand outside her stall. Apparently Hillary! was afraid if the reporter was left unguarded she’d find something out that Hillary! wouldn’t like and report it.
When the reporter reported on the subject, Hillary!’s campaign accused her of being obsessed with bathrooms.
These are the people now accusing me of wanting to police uteruses. The same people who want to convict me of rape if they don’t actually police my bedroom and witness me getting consent for each stage of foreplay.
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 5:53 pmtie me kangaroo down sport tie me kangaroo down
happyfeet (831175) — 4/13/2015 @ 6:04 pmWho are these strange ones following you around and peeking in your bedroom and accusing you of stuff, Steve57? And why of all the people in the world did they decide to glom onto you? Thank goodness you have dogs.
elissa (d3f72b) — 4/13/2015 @ 6:09 pmKirsten Gillibrand, elissa. I’ll let Ezra Klein voxsplain it.
http://www.vox.com/2014/10/13/6966847/yes-means-yes-is-a-terrible-bill-and-i-completely-support-it
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 6:23 pmYes, the dogs are a big help.
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 6:24 pmSince Hillary’s probably going to win why do we care who the GOP nominee is?
Gerald A (6b504a) — 4/13/2015 @ 6:44 pm@124, also it wasn’t my bedroom the Kirsten Gillebrand’s were policing. It belonged to a woman I knew, a lieutenant in the Navy. I was guilty of pouring her a glass of water and setting out a couple of aspirins, suggesting she should sleep it off. Then I left.
They couldn’t get me. This was just after Tailhook and they really wanted to. One of the main reasons was she wouldn’t perjure herself for them. For which I remain eternally grateful. It would have been easy for her.
They’ve made a lot of progress in the past 20 years and I don’t know if I’d have survived now.
Steve57 (cd6f9a) — 4/13/2015 @ 7:06 pmI don’t want to be the New Soviet Man. I’m curious as to why people keep electing Reds and think it has nothing to do with disastrous policies which do effect them.
If you elect the vanguard of the revolution, you get their priorities. This shows up in the budget.

steveg (794291) — 4/13/2015 @ 7:41 pmHillary is poised to take a strap on to failamerica… because we asked for it! Affirmative consent! Was that cry pleasure or pain? Bah. Same thing.
My guess is dogs are smarter about Hillary than 95% of foodstamp supporters, and 98% of Team R…. no dog would ever pick her as pack leader
steveg (794291) — 4/13/2015 @ 7:44 pmI do not expect OFA to work with the same monomaniacal devotion for Granny they did for Lightbringer.
The only requirement for the GOP is to turn out the base.
Let the shaming begin.
DNF (208255) — 4/14/2015 @ 11:14 amI’m spending a lot of time with younger peoples these days and politics is nowhere in the conversation.

nk (dbc370) — 4/14/2015 @ 11:39 amMillenials are not going to be more Democrat than they were in 2008 or 2012.
In fact, law of averages means they will be more Republican.
Republican in 2016 if Hillary runs and just about any of them will do the trick.
