Report: U.S. May Stop Backing Israel in U.N. After Bibi Offended Ol’ Selfie-Stick

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:10 am

Politico (link from Google Web cache, gives them no traffic):

In the wake of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decisive reelection, the Obama administration is revisiting longtime assumptions about America’s role as a shield for Israel against international pressure.

Angered by Netanyahu’s hard-line platform toward the Palestinians, top Obama officials would not rule out the possibility of a change in American posture at the United Nations, where the U.S. has historically fended off resolutions hostile to Israel.

. . . .

While saying it was “premature” to discuss Washington’s policy response, the official wouldn’t rule out a modified American posture at the United Nations, where the U.S. has long fended off resolutions criticizing Israeli settlement activity and demanding its withdrawal from Palestinian territories.

“We are signaling that if the Israeli government’s position is no longer to pursue a Palestinian state, we’re going to have to broaden the spectrum of options we pursue going forward,” the official said.

This is obviously due to a sober re-examination of U.S. policy in light of recent statements by Netanyahu, and not at all because of any personal pique on the part of Obama that Bibi gave a speech to Congress. Right?

And yet I seem to remember someone in Obama’s administration saying: “He spat in our face publicly and that’s no way to behave. Netanyahu ought to remember that President Obama has a year and a half left to his presidency, and that there will be a price.”

So: maybe we won’t back Israel when the world tries to condemn it for terrorism for the hundredth time, while pretending that Hamas doesn’t even exist. That’s what you do when you’re a semi-retired selfie-stick narcissist.

  2. Pretty Asbergery behavior by the White House, I’d say.

  8. Asperger syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) considered to be on the “high functioning” end of the spectrum. Affected children and adults have difficulty with social interactions and exhibit a restricted range of interests and/or repetitive behaviors. Motor development may be delayed, leading to clumsiness or uncoordinated motor movements. Compared with those affected by other forms of ASD, however, those with Asperger syndrome do not have significant delays or difficulties in language or cognitive development. Some even demonstrate precocious vocabulary – often in a highly specialized field of interest.

  9. There are no limits to Obama’s wankery. Thin-skinned doesn’t describe it adequately. Petulance, incompetence, short-sightednes, arrogance and narcissism are not good qualities in any person, let alone the de-facto leader of the Western World.

On another front, best wishes in your battle against the human tick, BK.

  11. What a contemptible person we have in the White House. Leftists like him treat Israel and the Middle East the same way they’ll treat, among innumerable examples, George Zimmerman vs Trayvon Martin or victims of crime vs perpetrators of crime in general, or immigrants going through legal procedures to get into the US vs people barging through the border. A world of ass-backward biases, emotions and policies.

I could deal with a principled form of isolationism from the US presidency or the current president getting his worthless self out of the Oval Office 24/7 and 365, and spending full time out on the golf course. But what we have now is sickening.

  13. American Jews give Democratic candidates about 75% of their votes. Our Jewish voters have put up with a lot from Democrats in the past, but the President’s supposedly contemplated actions, if actually taken, would (probably) drive Jewish voters right into the Republicans’ camp.

    The realistic politician Dana (f6a568)

  14. Doubtful Dana, most American Jewish Democrats are Progressives(Communist) first and anything else a distant second. They would support the Final Solution over there if it would help their position here.

    JNorth (5fe1bf)

  15. Hopefully there will be a number of influential Jews who support Israel who will make their thoughts known to President Obama. Unfortunately Obama has surrounded himself only with those who think like him. When those in his own party break with him — rather than listening, his administration announces criminal charges against the recalcitrant.

Vindictiveness is Obama’s trait. He simply can’t fathom anyone of honor disagreeing with him. His ego drives him to demonize and destroy anyone with a different outlook. Prime Minister Netanyahu has Israel’s survival as his top priority. Obama could care less. Giving in to madmen in Iran has a higher priority than defending a threatened democracy that is Israel. Obama follows Neville Chamberlain’s naïve “Peace in our Time” idiocy. The results of both leaders agreements will be the same

  16. I’m pretty sure it’s just an oversight that Iran and Hezbollah has disappeared from the Director of National Intelligence’s annual list of terror threats.

  17. Bam is far nastier to Republicans and Bibi than our actual enemies. He is especially ticked off that his campaign people’s interference and State Dept dollars didn’t influence the election in the manner they wished. Obama is a small petulant child.

  18. Yes, Dana. It’s been a while since I wrote on my own blog. But I might, again, someday.

  19. AZ Bob: The WH’s use of the made-up word “aspergery” was justly criticized as being insensitive to the people who suffer from it and their loved ones, and I plead guilty to insensitivity in repeating it. I probably should have just used their other description of Bibi, “chickensh*t,” to refer to the WH’s comments on the election results in Israel.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  20. Maybe if the Joooooz had elected the Jooooo version of Hamas or the Muslim Brotherhood then Preeezy AspergeryChickensh*t McThinSkinnedNarcissisticStompyFootBombyPantsTourretteSyndrome would be willing to respect the outcome of the Israeli Democratic process.

    It worked for the Arabs.

On the other hand, maybe Prom Queen just hates the Jooooz no matter what they do.

    Steve57 (88b05c)

  21. What exactly would be the consequence for Israel at the UN from this sort of action? The UN seems completely powerless to enforce any of its own decrees and boycotts/sanctions against Israel have been moving forward without UN involvement.

Petty US response indeed…but its not going to carry any meaningful consequence.

    Dejectedhead (68bf09)

  22. This threat to not support Israel is mostly bluffing, or will turn into a bluff, just like his “red line” with Syria and so many otehr things. There may be one or true resolutions where the Administration would consider it a close call, and may side against Israel – they’ll only make things worse if they do.

The whole problem is the goal of Arab diplomacy is to blame Israel for the fact that gwew ias no resolution to the Israeli-Arab dispute, and also to make sure there is no solution and then use that as an excuse for not co-operating with the United States on doens of matters.

If you actually want to resolve things, you must switch to blaming the Arab side and pit pressure on them.

That is besides the point that the fact Israel has no recognized borders is not the problem. Hatred and lies about Israel and the vilifucation and isolation of Israel are the problem. That won’t go away no matter what you try to do. That must go away first for anything else to happen.

When Sadat visited Jerusalem in 1977 he said “no more war, no more bloodshed.” That came first before anything else.

You are correct. If by government workers you aren’t limiting yourself to those parasites within the rapidly eroding US borders but also those employed by Fatah, Hamas, and the Mullahs in Prom Queen’s home turf abroad.

We have the UCMJ, which prevents us from acting like government workers, though. But perhaps I have been guilty of imprecision. I’ll correct that.

government worker civil servant = some guy who watches internet porn six hours a day on our dime and nobody can fire him.

government worker civil servant = some chick running her ebay business out of a cubicle at HHS HQ in DC.

Subject civil servants to the UCMJ and 95% of them would be in prison.

On the other hand, give servicemembers civil service protections and nobody is showing up for a deployment, and you can’t make them.

  72. You all fail to acknowledge the big fat white elephant in the room; the fact that Obama is a closet terrorist sympathiser and Israel-hater. The God of the Jews did not let him have his way in Israel and bring about his own demonic system into power. Obama needs to go before he causes irreparable damage to this country of ours and indeed the cause of freedom. I regret all the time and energy I wasted rooting for this son of a b*tch! I thought we had come to a place in history where America could say she has overcome her history of racism and the histories of discrimination and violence based on race. We thought Obama was the fulfilment of the MLK dream but today we can see how wrong we were. We have enthroned the antichrist’s protégé. Obama is not who we were waiting for. Obama needs to go now!

The Performance Racing industry show came and went with a series of new parts for all of our racing needs. Among the most notable of these items was Mopar’s new 426 ’Elephant’ Hemi V8 engine. This engine is all aluminum and delivers an impressive 540 HP and 530 ft.-lbs. of torque, all for a bargain price of $13,675. Production for the engine has already started.

Along with the new 426 engine, Mopar brought out the new 2011 Mopar Challenger V-10 Drag Pak . The drag pak comes with a 8.4-liter 512 cubic-inch engine with a 2-speed automatic transmission. Based on the 2011 Dodge Challenger and finished in a Stock Eliminator and Super Stock configuration, the 2011 Mopar Challenger V-10 Drag Pak is the first and only 500-plus cubic-inch V-10 drag-race package car…
