It Couldn’t Happen to a Nicer Guy: DOJ Will File Corruption Charges Against Democrat U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:18 pm

Slightly over two years ago, I wrote the following about Democrat United States Sen. Bob Menendez:

I keep hearing that the FBI is closing in. For what it’s worth.

Always trust content from Patterico:

The Justice Department is preparing to bring criminal corruption charges against New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, a Democrat, alleging he used his Senate office to push the business interests of a Democratic donor and friend in exchange for gifts.

People briefed on the case say Attorney General Eric Holder has signed off on prosecutors’ request to proceed with charges, CNN has learned exclusively. An announcement could come within weeks. Prosecutors are under pressure in part because of the statute of limitation on some of the allegations.

P.S. Keep in mind that when someone says “the FBI is closing in,” that means: “there might be an indictment sometime in the next five years or so.”

UPDATE: I now see JVW covered this earlier and floated the theory, apparently running around conservative circles, that this is retaliation for Menendez’s opposition to Obama’s Iran deal.

I can’t say for sure that the theory is wrong, of course. I can’t put anything past Obama and Holder. But the FBI works verry slowly, and I’m not inclined to besmirch the professions at the FBI and DOJ based on this theory. Keep in mind: Menendez might have known the indictment was coming, and decided to criticize Obama to set himself up as a potential martyr.

  2. Yes, but as Glenn Reynolds points out, all of this happened over two years ago and it is just now coming to light, right after Menendez raised vocal opposition against Obama’s Iran policy.

  3. you mess with Iran you mess with food stamp’s legacy

a nuclear-armed Iran what can wipe Israel off the map is like the dream he had of his drunk-ass commie daddy what never loved him

  4. It wouldn’t surprise me if Menendez criticized the Iran deal as a way to make himself into a political martyr.

As much as I dislike Obama and Holder, I am not going to further the Menendez narrative and besmirch the professionals at the FBI and DOJ over some half-baked conspiracy theory.

  7. The baguette of your ba minh is not your tortilla. Menendez is a slime and whether Obama take shim down for opposing the Iran appeasement or for not sharing that Colombian gold, it’s all good.

  8. I think it’s possible to believe there is merit to the charges and nevertheless criticize the timing. The Obama Administration doesn’t seem to act unless there’s some way it can benefit.

  9. Anybody know what happens if you co-sponsor a bill and then you get taken down by the FBI and are under indictment? Do you still get to play with your bill in the senate until you cop a plea or go to jail? If this goes down will Reid likely force him to resign?

  12. It’s not the timing of the indictment that I am questioning, Patterico; it’s the timing of the leak to the media. What if the charges aren’t brought for for another month or so? Wouldn’t that strongly suggest that the timing of the leak was largely due to Menendez’s criticism of the dithering over Iran? This has The Chicago Way written all over it.

  16. Menendez is an assigned player taking a hit for Teams Obama and Clinton. Distract and distract. He will be pardoned and what are we going to be talking about next week.

    We just play the game.

  20. The US has indulged itself in Stalinist show-trials for some time, at least as far back as Scooter Libby. The idea that the US is a country of laws is a bad joke.

  21. The idea that the US is a country of laws is a bad joke.

It is a joke and it’s the leftists who have made it that way. When the elites give exceptions and favors and special exclusions to their friends, supporters and collaborators the law ends up being a corrupt racket. When the same elites force a law on the rest of us and exempt themselves like Obamacare, net neutrality and such we all lose respect for the law itself. The law now is aimed at certain citizens, not all citizens and that means it is being used to oppress.

There’s probably some truth to that. I’ve always said that when you’re being drummed out of town, run to the front of the pack and make it look like a parade.

    Chuck Bartowski (11fb31)

  27. “There’s probably some truth to that.”

Chuck Bartowski – But Obama publicly accused Menendez of acting on behalf of those shadowy donors, you know the ones I mean, the ones who control all the banks and media, in a typically classy Obama move.

  28. Menendez’ sojourn to the DR is not all that different from Bubba’s flights to Epstein’s little slice of paradise.
Could this possible indictment of the Senator be a cloaked warning to Bill to not interfere in any WH succession maneuvering and to convince Hillary to go quietly into that long good night?

    askeptic (efcf22)

  29. I’m looking forward to the day when it could happen to some other nice guys, including Eric Holder and his boss. What they’ve done to break and distort the law exceeds anything a U.S. senator from New Jersey could ever dream of accomplishing from his abuses of power.

  30. But the FBI works verry slowly

Don’t know about the entire FBI, but a tip on someone with childporn and an arrest took less that 3 weeks last year.

  31. Here’s a free tip for journalists:

Whenever you can work the words “underage prostitute” into a sentence with “US Senator,” it behooves you to do so.

  32. “Whenever you can work the words “underage prostitute” into a sentence with “US Senator,” it behooves you to do so.”

carlitos – Not if the U.S. Senator is a Democrat. That’s in the style manual. 🙂
