Attention Marie Harf: Notorious ISIS Beheader “Jihadi John” Comes From Well-to-Do Family

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:25 am

Shocker:

The world knows him as “Jihadi John,” the masked man with a British accent who has beheaded several hostages held by the Islamic State and who taunts audiences in videos circulated widely online.

But his real name, according to friends and others familiar with his case, is Mohammed Emwazi, a Briton from a well-to-do family who grew up in West London and graduated from college with a degree in computer programming. He is believed to have traveled to Syria around 2012 and to have later joined the Islamic State, the group whose barbarity he has come to symbolize.

This is no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention. Osama bin Laden and Mohammed Atta were among many “well-to-do” Muslims who became attracted to terrorism, not through lack of opportunity, but as a result of a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam.

Marie Harf, please explain how using government to get this “well-to-do” fellow a job would prevent him from being a jihadi.

Oh, never mind.

P.S. For that matter, Marie Harf, please explain how government creates jobs.

Hint: with the exception of government jobs, it doesn’t. And government jobs are a waste of money unless they protect the country from external or internal dangers.

And you’re doing nothing to protect the country, Marie Harf — meaning your job is a waste of money.

If you really think jobs are the answer to everything (and they aren’t), your solution is to get government out of the way.

Well, at least we don’t have to worry about Marie Harf going lady jihadi in the near future.

  4. I’d like for her to explain how she got HER job.

    What were her outstanding qualifications.

Has she ever put into practice what she claims to believe.

Has she ever seen what she believes put into practice.

Has she ever worked a 9-5 job of menial labor and understand

how much it takes out of those who have to do so. And then to

see/hear some overprivileged over paid imbecile claim to know

how to get those who have embraced thuggery to reject it and

become part of Western Civilization despite their stated hatred

and disdain for said Western Civilization. And is being paid for

that stupid opinion with their tax money.

  5. From the day she originally spouted that drivel, I thought how entertaining it was for this administration to think that creating jobs, good jobs, for people living on the other side of the world when they cannot pull that trick off right here at home.

As to stopping people from being thugs, consider the fact that Travon Martin and Michael Brown are no longer practicing thugs. There may be a teaching moment there.

    Gramps, the original (9e1415)

  6. Marie Harf is the poster child for this administration. Inexperienced yet because of a sheepskin she believes herself to be an intellectual superior to those of us who actually work (or in my case worked) for a living. Join her up with Hillary, Debbie Whatsername-Shultz, Fauxcahontas and that douche bag from college who thinks we should pay for her $9 birth control pills. These are the fine intellects the progressive left has created with their education/propaganda machine known as academia. These broads are such idiots they need to call an electrician to change the batteries in their vibrators. ( although all a vibrator will do for them is chip their teeth).

  10. If Jihadi John wasn’t motivated by a lack of opportunity, what possessed him to be involved with ISIS? Hopefully someone at State will make that discovery…

  13. Now Heifer Harf could do worse. She could point out that cutting a lot of heads off could lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. She’ll be promoting the federal availability of remedial physical therapy and knife sharpening classes to alleviate that physical problem.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bigger pile of walking stupidity than Mary Harf–unless it’s her former boss and now White House Communications Director Jen Psaki. What a duo. Dumb and Dumber cubed.

  14. I get the feeling this info was released to stick it to the poverty/Marxist theory of radicalism. Note too that this man complained of being unfairly harassed by intelligence services in TAnzania and then Britain in 2010 when he went on a safari. Safari, right. A radical lawyer defended him and caused a ruckus, just like we see time and again here. Anything to soften up our defenses. They learned well from our Left.

  15. re Hoagie @6:

Legal Insurrection had an item last week (link below) regarding the issue of college degrees as job qualifiers… one phrase that stood out was “qualification vs. competency”. Some information included there from Mike Rowe (the Dirty Jobs guy) shows how our world has shifted to the former to the exclusion of the latter.

All this was stimulated by the “flap” over Scott Walker not having a degree. The lefties complaining failed to mention Bill Gates or Steve Jobs in their complaints. Harf is coming out as an example of how competency is not necessarily related to the degree. I find it interesting that things we would expect from all that college, like critical thinking, logic, etc, also appear to be missing. I must be missing some of the nuance involved. Or something.

The comments on this at LI are also most illuminating.

  17. The lovely Mrs Lucas — Marie Harf was married in 2012, so the only proper way to address her is by her husband’s name — was graduated from Indiana University with a Machelor of Arts in Political Science, and from the University of Virginia with a Mistress of Arts in Foreign Affairs. From tere she was hired by the Central Intelligence Agency as an analyst, focusing on Middle East leadership issues; this explains rather a lot about the quality of our intelligence concerning Middle East leadership issues!

She got her job because she had the right degree from the right college (UVa, not IU), and because she’s a cute little white girl. I hope that no one is so foolish as to think anything else matters.

I believe that I read that her papa is a PhD in political science and a former professor at Ohio State, so he’s probably connected in Washington circles and managed to pull some strings for her too. Not that I am looking askance about that; it’s how a lot of people get jobs. But it underscores the idea that Ms. Harf probably didn’t rise entirely on merit.

  29. It turns out “Jihadi John” is a college graduate in computer science.

His parents may have seen to his secular education, but they didn’t teach him the difference between right and wrong.

    So eventually, somebody else did.

(He was stopped in 2009 after going to Tanzania where it was thought he wanted to go to Somalia and join al Shabab (which he denied) and forced to go back to England. He disappeared in 2012 and later showed up in Syria)

British Fighter Was Known to Authorities for Years

1988 Mohammed Emwazi is born. His family moves to London six years later.

Aug. 2009 He finishes college in London and travels to Tanzania with two friends. They’re refused entry and are put on a plane to Amsterdam, where they are questioned by authorities. They’re questioned again when they arrive back in the U.K.

Sept. 2009 Mr. Emwazi leaves the U.K. and travels to Kuwait for eight months for work.

2010 He makes at least two trips back to the U.K. and is stopped upon arrival twice. In July, he’s detained at a London airport, interrogated and told he cannot return to Kuwait.

2012 Mr. Emwazi wants to leave the U.K. and applies for teaching positions in Saudi Arabia. His applications are rejected.

2013 U.K. officials tell Mr. Emwazi’s family that he’s in Syria.

Aug. 2014 Militants from Islamic State release a video with Jihadi John that appears to show the beheading of American journalist James Foley.

Sept. 2014 Islamic State releases another video that shows the beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff. Later that month, the group releases a video showing the beheading of British aid worker David Haines.

Oct. 2014 The militant group releases a video showing the beheading of British aid worker Alan Henning.

Nov. 2014 Islamic State releases a video showing the body of U.S. aid worker Abdul-Rahman Kassig, also known as Peter Kassig.

Jan. 2015 The group releases a video in which Jihadi John is seen standing alongside two Japanese hostages and demanding a ransom in exchange for their release. Later in the month, the group releases a video showing the beheading of Japanese hostage Kenji Goto.

  31. as a result of a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam.

Actually, I think the motivation of many of the leaders, some of the “soldiers” are pretty stupid, is a sort of jealous rage that the west has come so far and left the supposed “superior” Muslim world behind. In fact, most of the triumphs of the “Classical period” of Islam were not by Muslims but by Jews and Christians who either “converted” or were tolerated because the Arabs and Turks could not run things without chaos. It’s sort of like the final scene in “Lawrence of Arabia” when they take Damascus and nobody knows how to run the city utilities.

The “translation period” of Harun al Rashad and his son was thanks to the Christian Greeks who did the actual translations. Th science was either from the Jews or stolen like “Arabic numbers” or paper. (India and China). Babylon had mathematics and something like algebra a thousand years before Mohammed.

The jihadis use Finnish cell phones and US internet apps to run their “Caliphate.”

  33. Another triumph of the enlightened caliphate:

sis militants have reportedly ransacked Mosul library, burning over a hundred thousand rare manuscripts and documents spanning centuries of human learning.

Initial reports said approximately 8,000 books were destroyed by the extremist group.

However, AL RAI’s chief international correspondent Elijah J. Magnier told The Independent that a Mosul library official believes as many as 112,709 manuscripts and books, some of which were registered on a UNESCO rarities list, are among those lost.

  34. JVW, Harf couldn’t rise on merit because she displays none. Merit is not a leftist education, connections in government and important parents. Merit comes from personal achievement and accomplishment and she has neither achieved nor accomplished anything of merit.

Why anything of cultural value is still kept in Islamic countries is beyond me. They seem to have a predilection for destroying things. Recall that the Taliban in Afghanistan destroyed Buddha statues that were 1500 years old back in 2001 before they became notorious for their role in Islamic terrorism.

Depends on how you define merit. Miss Harf probably produced all of the very important papers and analyses required of her during her tenure at the CIA, which means that she did her job. The question remains: were any of her analyses correct? Did anybody judge her work by that standard?

We know that the so-called “Arab Spring” which began in December of 2010 caught the State Department and the CIA almost completely off-guard. I couldn’t find when Miss Harf left CIA for State, but the Arab Spring situation would have been in her specialty field, Middle Eastern leadership, at CIA. By 2012, Miss Harf (by then Mrs Lucas) was working on the President’s re-election campaign.

Actually, I think the motivation of many of the leaders, some of the “soldiers” are pretty stupid, is a sort of jealous rage that the west has come so far and left the supposed “superior” Muslim world behind.

That culd be an important element, and I would not call it jealousy. It’s more religious reasoning.

If Islam is the true religion, other religions, or places that observe other religions, should not be dominant.

They would then need to attack the west to “prove” that their religion is correct. They could, of course, be technically superior and more advanced, also, but this way – damaging the competition – is easier.

I am not sure this is still the motive, but it might have been used to motivate the World Trade Center bombers 22 years ago.

That Islamic buildings are the tallest buildings is a big thing in Islam.

Let’s look where we are now:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_the_world

Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, wins.

Third place is a building in Mecca.

Tied for 9th and 10th are two buildings in Malaysia (an Islamic country) This is the oldest – they were completed in 1998. At 1,483 feet, they beat the original World Trade Center towers at 1,368 feet, but the planning for the destruction of the World Trade Center twin towers had started before that. and you have to count the spires for Petronas Towers to beat the old World Trade Center towers.

The rest of the current Top Ten are all in China or Taiwan, or the new One World Trade Center.

The “translation period” of Harun al Rashad and his son Approximately 750 to 825.

was thanks to the Christian Greeks who did the actual translations. The science was either from the Jews or stolen like “Arabic numbers” or paper. (India and China).

    Well, of course.

But, regardless who originally invented it, they would still be the most advanced civilization at that time and that’s what they are looking at.
