Roy Harper Acquitted of Sexual Assault of Teenager; Still Facing More Counts

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:36 pm

I just stumbled across this news from today:

Folk-rock musician Roy Harper has been cleared of indecently assaulting a 16-year-old girl in the 1980s.

Mr Harper, 73, of Rossmore, near Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland, was unanimously acquitted by a jury at Worcester Crown Court.

Jurors are still considering verdicts on six other sexual offences alleged to have been committed against an 11-year-old girl in Herefordshire in the 1970s.

I really like Roy Harper. As I told you in 2010:

Several years ago, Roy came out to Los Angeles and performed several nights at Largo on Fairfax. Around the same time he played McCabe’s in Santa Monica. I saw every show.

So, I don’t want any of this to be true.

That said, it is what it is. We’ll see what happens.

While we wait, let’s listen to one of his best:

  6. Same here Pat. I bought Bullinamingvase the day it came out and it’s been a classic since. I really hope he’s innocent. He’s been good friends with the Zeps and Floyd over the years. You hope they’re good judges of character.

HTF do you defend yourself against charges for things that happened 35+ years ago?

Glitter. What a sleazebag. Still like the music though.

Listen Mama, Put on your mornin’ gown’,
Put in your nightshirt Mama, we gonna shake ’em down.
Must I holler? Must I, must I, must I shake ’em on down?
Ooh, I done been mistreated, baby, I believe I’ll shake ’em on down.
Gave my baby twenty dollar bill,
If that don’t shake her, Sure my shot-, shot-, shotgun will,
Yeah, I gave my baby twenty dollar bill.
Well, if that don’t get that woman, I’m sure my shotgun will.

    I’m gonna shoot her now.

  8. British entertainers from the 70’s have been facing these kinds of accusations for a while now. Legendary BBC presenters, in particular.

  9. Well Jimmy Saville really was a monster and is at the root of all this. But many others have become ensnared due to applying today’s standards to activities and mores back in the 70s and 80s. We were a lot more touchy feely back then.

  10. In the past in the UK if you could fabricate a plausible enough story to get a conviction on such a thing, then you could get a bounty from the Government. I don’t know if there has been any attempt to reform this.
