Unnamed Obama Official: Netanyahu Will Pay a Price for This

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:24 am

Haaretz (via Hot Air):

“We thought we’ve seen everything,” a senior American official said. “But Bibi managed to surprise even us. There are things you simply don’t do. He spat in our face publicly and that’s no way to behave. Netanyahu ought to remember that President Obama has a year and a half left to his presidency, and that there will be a price.”

I don’t know; maybe Netanyahu is just trying to show that he’s not a “chickenshit.” That’s the label that an unnamed Obama administration official pinned on Netanyahu last October with no real blowback from the administration. If this is all about petty revenge for personal slights, well, I suppose two can play that game. That ever occur to you, Obama?

I guess it didn’t, because guess what? You also seem to be making the same mistake in complaining that this is a breach of protocol. It’s also kind of a breach of protocol (to put it mildly) to go around handing out work permits to people that Congress has said are here illegally and should be removed from the country. (It’s also unconstitutional, in my opinion, but let’s just talk “protocol” for now.)

In Rome, not long before the fall of the Republic, there was a fella named Tiberius Gracchus who breached “protocol” and bypassed the Roman Senate (and violated several other traditional norms of collegiality) in an effort to address inequality in society. Things didn’t end well for him. Namely, he was beaten to death with clubs and bench legs. Nobody is talking about doing any such thing to Obama, of course — nor should they be. All they’re doing is inviting a foreign leader to make a speech — and showing that breaches of protocol run both ways.

The sowing is done. It’s reaping time. Enjoy the harvest, pal.

It seems that President Obama likes using unnamed officials to communicate what he really thinks to Prime Minister Netanyahu. But, Mr Netanyahu already knew it: now that the elections are over, and our esteemed President doesn’t have to worry about the Jewish vote for his fellow Democrats in Congress — and there’s no evidence that he gives a flying fornicate about what happens once he leaves office — Mr Obama would have been attempting to impose costs and difficulties on Israel regardless of any particular breaches of protocol.

The Israelis have already seen how much the Democrats, at their National Conventions, think of Israel, and can see how much our left support the scumbag Palestinians. And they know that Mr Obama is as much a solid creature of the American left as anyone, and they have learned not to expect any more support for Israel from our clown President than the very minimum he has to show. Now that the elections have passed, that minimum has dropped, and the Israelis know that, too.

  4. so, what protocol are they claiming is being broken?
Is it proper protocol to leave a meeting with a visiting head of state for over an hour in order to have supper?

Is it proper protocol for the PotUS to bow down to foreign leaders?

do I really need to go on?
Our PotUS has established he is a schmuck, I hope all this actually helps

Hot Air is wrong to call Haaretz center left. It is true left, well to the left of even MSNBC, for instance.

I noticed that problem, too, but it;s aminor point. It ios pro-Labor, and Labor, or whatever it is calling itself this Israeli election, considers itself center-left.

I wonder, is it the only daily paper in Israel making profit>

They tried to pass a law making it illegal for Sheldon Adelson to own his free paper.

    http://forward.com/articles/209216/israel-lawmakers-push-move-to-close-sheldon-adelso/

Israeli lawmakers approved in a preliminary vote a bill that would shut down a free Israeli daily owned by American billionaire Sheldon Adelson.

The vote on the bill intended to shut down the Israel Hayom newspaper passed its first reading by a vote of 43 to 23. There are 120 lawmakers in the Knesset.

The bill, sponsored by Labor party lawmaker Eitan Cabel, now goes to the Knesset House Committee, where it will be sent to another Knesset committee to be refined for the second and third Knesset plenum votes.

While the bill targets all newspapers that are distributed for free, it has been clear its intent is to close down the Adelson-owned newspaper, which is known as a shill for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The bill would make it illegal to distribute a full-size newspaper six days a week free of charge.

“This is a bill in favor of pluralism and multiple opinions. It is a battle so that, in a few years, we do not become a country with only one newspaper. Sheldon Adelson wants to bury a market that is fighting for its life,” Cabel told the lawmakers. “Israel Hayom does not exist because of its success as a newspaper, but because of the hundreds of millions in gambling funds that are funneled to it from overseas. Does anyone in this room honestly think that this is how a model for a normal newspaper looks? That this is how fair competition looks?”

“What is this? Since when do parliaments close newspapers? Are we bolsheviks?” said Likud party Moshe Feiglin, who has been the object of significant criticism in the newspaper.

Sheldon Adelson does not read Hebrew, although his second (I think) wife is Israeli, so the contenst of the newspaper are entirely in the hands of hired hands.

Some years ago a radio station (Arutz-7) which had been operating as a pirate radio station got clsoed, in spite of attempts by the Knesset to legalize it.

Well, knowing how generous the left are with their own money — or so Haaretz might assume, being as they are so generous with other people’s money — the editors probably figure that they’ll get the American left to pay for it.

As for us wicked reich-wing conservatives, they know we won’t pay good money for utter drivel, so they aren’t concerned with us.

    The extremely poor Dana (f6a568)

  21. Mr Finkelman quoted:

The bill would make it illegal to distribute a full-size newspaper six days a week free of charge.

Unintended consequences? Wouldn’t that also apply to the online versions of all newspapers?

But the answers are simple: Mr Adelman then distributes his paper five days a week, and publishes it on the internet, where anyone can read it, for free. And that’s the problem for newspapers in general: how do they make money competing against all of the free information on the internets that Al Gore invented.

The model for a normal newspaper is having no competition from other forms of media, though having competition within its own medium. Once that model was shattered, newspapers started a slow downward spiral, that they haven’t yet figured out how to break.

    The businessman Dana (f6a568)

  23. To prove the freedom supporting Dana’s point…
Who needs radio when you have the Internet?

These folks are the Israeli far right..the ones who really would not mind a bit of ethnic cleansing, as long as it was Arabs being cleansed.

    kishnevi (3719b7)

  24. Not that there is really an editorial position at Arutz-7, but if they had one:

They are not for expulsion – they are for annexation of the West Bank (but probably not Gaza) probably because of the insecurity of the rights to remain where they or other Jews are now living They want Israel to shut the door on that. (it’s not to solve the general situation because it wouldn’t)

They would offer citizenship and hope the offer was not taken up by too many.

He is changing his schedule now to go to Saudi Arabia instead of seeing the Taj Mahal. He (and Biden as well) missed the funeral, since unlike the United Kingdom, they can’t make arrangements in a short time.

It was Goldwater, with an able assist from Nixon’s “Southern Strategy”, who finally drove blacks into the arms of the suddenlt reformed Democrats.

The truth of the matter is, the switch from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party really happened under FDR – in places they could vote, anyway.

That included Memphis, Tennessee, and Hot Springs, Arkansas, where they were voted by the Democratic machine. In both places the machine paid their poll taxes for them.

    http://www.applet-magic.com/crump.htm

At that time there was a poll tax of $2 that discouraged many people from voting. Generally throughout the South black people could not vote, particularly in the Democratic Party primary, which effectively was the real election since Republican Party membership was minimal. In Memphis, which was 40 percent black, blacks did vote because it served the interest of the white politicians to have a substantial black vote they could control. The white politicians bought blocks of poll tax receipts which they provided to the black voters with instructions of how to vote. In return for their voting, blacks got barbeque, Coca Cola, whisky and watermelons.

The same sort of thing went on in Hot Springs, Arkanasas, when it was run by the machine controlled by Owen Vincent (Owney the Killer) Madden, who was a key founder of organized crime in America (he “retired” there in 1934) especially in the years before 1948 when the machine temporarily lost power in the “GI revolt”.
