John Boehner Invites Netanyahu To Speak On Iran, White House Implodes

Filed under: General — Dana @ 5:37 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Whether you are in the diplomatic breach of protocol camp or the Speaker grew a pair camp, it is safe to say that House Speaker John Boehner’s invite to Benjamin Netanyahu to speak before Congress next month about the Iranian nuclear program has angered the White House. Boehner was prompted to make the offer after the president made it clear that he would veto legislation that would increase sanctions against Iran.

Boehner justified his actions:

“The Congress can make its decision on its own” — but he also insisted, “I don’t believe I’m poking anyone in the eye.”

“There is a serious threat that exists in the world, and the president last night kind of papered over it,” Boehner said. “And the fact is is that there needs to be a more serious conversation in America about how serious the threat is from radical Islamic jihadists and the threat posed by Iran.”

He told GOP lawmakers this morning:

“[Obama] expects us to stand idly by and do nothing while he cuts a bad deal with Iran. Two words: ‘Hell no!’ We’re going to do no such thing,” Boehner said Wednesday in a meeting of House Republicans. “Let’s send a clear message to the White House, and the world, about our commitment to Israel and our allies.”

Further:

“Prime Minister Netanyahu is a great friend of our country, and this invitation carries with it our unwavering commitment to the security and well-being of his people,” Boehner said in a statement on Wednesday. “In this time of challenge, I am asking the prime minister to address Congress on the grave threats radical Islam and Iran pose to our security and way of life. Americans and Israelis have always stood together in shared cause and common ideals, and now we must rise to the moment again.”

Josh Earnest responded to the news :

“The typical protocol would suggest that the leader of a country would contact the leader of another country when he’s traveling there,” said White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest. “That certainly is how President Obama’s trips are planned when he travels overseas. This particular event seems to be a departure from that protocol.”

Earnest said the White House was made aware of the invitation before Boehner’s office released a letter dated Jan. 21 inviting Netanyahu to address a joint session of Congress on Feb. 11.

Earnest claims the White House was not angry because Boehner did not reach out to them first. Riiight… He also found the invite “interesting.”

Netanyahu has accepted Boehner’s invitation.

Let the games begin.

  1. Hello.

    Dana (8e74ce)

  2. This is great. Boehner finally showing some of his ‘stuff’ from the ’90s

I don’t see how this is a problem of any sort or a ‘breach of protocol’.
Constitutionally the Congress is an equal of the Presidential Office. The Congress
is the one that votes on War Declarations as well as international treaties.
If he really did say “Hell No” – hurray!

  3. You’re a little late to the party on this one Dana, 🙂 but in earlier comments on the Amash thread Boehner’s invite has seemed to bring most of the various R factions together in agreement that this was a most excellent and gutsy call by speaker Boehner. And that’s great to see for a change. !!!

    elissa (c04b3a)

  4. There’s a possible alternative scenario based upon what I heard on the radio while I was driving around earlier. That Boehner did follow protocol, and did notify DoS which approved the visit. And then Obama tried to block the trip in order to undermine Netanyahu with Israeli voters in the upcoming election.

So if that’s true, the reason why the WH is livid is because Boehner went public with the invite, and with Netanyahu’s acceptance. Thus screwing up Obama’s machinations.

  8. ==Thus screwing up Obama’s machinations==

“Elect (insert R candidate name here) to help screw up Obama’s machinations” would have made a wonderful campaign slogan for 2012 and 2014 contests. Where were you when they needed you Steve57?

    elissa (c04b3a)

  9. Of course the WH would take the Imperial Position of “WE GET TO DECIDE WHO ADDRESSES THE GOVERNMENT” – as anything else just reinforces the position that a President is just another executive in service of the People who elect him to his position, and not the Sun God that Obola believes he is.
Does THE PRESIDENT consult with the Majority Leader and The Speaker when he invites other Heads of State to visit the White House, as that would be the comparable PROTOCOL that he is complaining that Speaker Boehner failed to observe.

It’s all about me, me I tell you, ME!

I’ll be so glad when this cry-baby is gone.

  27. At least Boehner didn’t travel to Israel: [T]his isn’t the first time a House speaker has reached out to a world leader despite a White House request to stay back. In April 2007, then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi traveled to Syria to meet with President Bashar al-Assad despite the Bush administration’s objections. Pelosi wanted to start a dialogue with Syria, as diplomatic relations had broken down in the 1990s; President George W. Bush rejected such negotiation, saying, “Sending delegations doesn’t work.”

  32. Clearly, since the President refuses to do his job, we’re fortunate we have a Speaker who’s willing to step up and lead the nation in this time of crisis. America needs a real leader, now more than ever, and the empty suit occupying the white House isn’t up to the duties of office. He’s an embarrassment to the nation and a rebuke to all those who trusted him. Now, he’s standing in the doorway of progress trying to block commonsense efforts to preserve peace in the Middle East.

The White House’s petulant reaction is typical of their perverse refusal to face the realities of Islamic terrorism. The cowards wouldn’t even send a representative to Paris to stand against bloodthirsty jihad. And, as history proves – appeasement provokes war – just as surely as day follows night. Obama’s Middle Eastern machinations are designed to provide cover so Iran can develop nuclear weapons and the means to use them, first to destroy Israel and then to threaten the world with nuclear jihad.

  39. OK, so the Speaker has invited Prime Minister Netanyahu to address the House of Representatives. Now, what has that accomplished? Well for one, it has pleased the conservatives who have been concerned about his “establishment” attitude, and wondering if he was going to cave in to the White House the way he has previously.

But inviting the Prime Minister doesn’t really do all that much. It is no cover for the Congress if the Congress continues to overspend, nor is it a cover for the GOP if they chicken out on Homeland Security funding next month, nor is it a cover if the GOP fails to extract every bit it can from its new majority.

I’m pleased that Mr Boehner extended the invitation, and remain cautiously optimistic, but that’s all.

  40. Protocol??? This from the the guy who was in a meeting with Netanyahu at the White House, got up and left to have dinner while leaving his guest, a major head of state, sitting alone for an hour. A huge insult, a breech of protocol and just disgustingly rude. Two more years and we can throw this petulant child/man on the ash heap of history.

    Thresherman (07789c)

  41. Dana, isn’t about providing Congress cover for anything. It is about depriving Obama of his, as expressed in his lies in the SOTU.

    – Obama’s diplomacy hasn’t halted their progress
    – The sanctions will not go into effect until after negotiations fail (not my certainty, almost as if Obama intends for negotiations to fail) and not immediately as Obama constantly implies and misleads.
    – It is not tantamount to a declaration of war. That talking point, too, is straight from the mouths of the Mullahs in Tehran, like the talking point that sanctions would be “perceived” as a violation of the Joint Plan Of Action when they are in fact not.

In short, the certainty of sanctions should negotiations fail is the only thing that will force the Iranians to modify their behavior. The Iranians know it. Obama knows it. And since they are both on the same side of the negotiating table against the US and is allies they are both squealing like those pigs Joni Ernst used to castrate about it.

  44. 18. DNF (dddc46) — 1/21/2015 @ 6:53 pm

Every Israeli PM has addressed congress even scumbag Olmert.

If I read him correctly, Peter Baker of the New York Times seems to think this happened only because the Republicans won control of both houses of Congress.

    http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2015/01/21/us/politics/ap-us-congress-iran-sanctions.html

Barely sworn in, the new Republican-controlled Congress is already on a collision course with Obama over a major foreign policy issue.

The foolishness about the threat of more sanctions making things worse that’s now going on about Iran, probably comes directly or omdirectly from Iran.

I mean the Iranian negotiators could have told U.S. diplomats: “We want sanctions lifted. Why should we believe you would get Congress to lift sanctions in a deal, if Congress is so gung ho now to add new ones?

Why, your promise to lidt sanctions would be just as worthless as the one from Argentina to take Iranian officials suspected of being responsible for the bombing the Jewish center in Buenosa Aires in 1994 off the Interpol watch list, and replace the idea of prosecution with a joint Iranian-Argentinian “truth commission.”

(Although it passed the Argentine Congress an Argentine court held that to be unconstitutional, and it’s currently being appealed.)

Well, no the Iranians wouldn’t point to that example.

In the meantime, Secretary of State John Kerry seems to have found an Israeli official to support his position of no sanctions:

Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday quoted an unidentified Israeli intelligence official as saying that adding sanctions now “would be like throwing a grenade into the process.”

Sooper Sekrit Intelligence. Why won’t anybody understand Obama is relying on Sooper Sekrit intelligence? That’s why he says things that are so stupid.

The Sooper Sekrit Israeli intelligence source backing Kerry up is only in the other story.

    Sammy Finkelman (e806a6)

  47. 51. Here is a quote from the link:

The statement issued by the PMO also referred to remarks made by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday night, according to which a high-ranking Israeli intelligence official told Kerry that further sanctions on Iran would be like throwing a grenade into the fire.

“Regarding the reported reference to “throwing a grenade,” the Head of the Mossad did not use this expression regarding the imposition of sanctions, which he believes to be the sticks necessary for reaching a good deal with Iran,” read the statement.

The Mossad chief “used this expression as a metaphor to describe the possibility of creating a temporary crisis in the negotiations at the end of which talks would resume under improved conditions. The Head of the Mossad pointed out explicitly that the bad agreement taking shape with Iran is likely to lead to a regional arms race,” according to the statement.

Ah, he wants a grenade thown into the process!

Apparently, Something got lost in transmission. (Mossad chief Tamir Pardo told this to a group of U.S. Senators, not Kerry.

Or Kerry could be cherry picking words.

    Sammy Finkelman (e806a6)

  48. He wants a grenade thown into the process because it’s not going anywhere now.

Not quite the meaning Kerry implied.

    Sammy Finkelman (e806a6)

  49. It would be very much like Kerry to hear only what he wants to hear.

    seeRpea (1d44c7)

  50. British Prime Minister David Cameron issued the same warning as Obama, and a European Community official seems to silently assented to this so it looks like this is coming from the Iranians.

Israel and the P+5 may not disagree on the facts, whether the assessment is right or wrong – that is, that Supreme Iranian Leader Ayatollah Khamenei may pull the plug on the negotiations if he thinks there s nochance of getting sanctions relief in return for little or nothing, and that, he’s also planning wars.

The difference between Israel and the others may be that Israel thinks that a bad deal is worse than no deal, while the others maybe think no deal is worse than a bad deal. This is because Israel thinks that Iran getting very close to a bomb, or a couple of bombs, and just needing to make a decision to break out is what a bad deal would allow, while the United states and the UK is more comfortable with that so long as they don’t actually have test a bomb. Thinking that’s better than a war.

But Israel maybe takes the position that Iran is not going to start a war, or accelerate its bomb program, just because the negotiations break down, and it’s not the negotiations that is stopping them from doing anything, but the sanctions.

    The hesdline now is:

Yemen’s president, cabinet resign amid rebel standoff

Yemen faces the prospect of a partition between al Qaeda and Iran.

Kind of like the nightmare scenario in Syria, except that there are 2 al Qaedas there.

    There’s Original al Qaeda ® ™ and there’s ISIS/ISIL/Daesh/IS/Islamic State/”the” Islamic State/Whatchamacallit.

Whatchamacallit has just threatened to behead 2 Japanese hostages and the Prime Minister of Japan is working frantically with the king of Jordan to try to prevent that, trying to make actual contact (Jordan has its own prisoner, a captive airman, and so far he seems to be still alive)

Did I mention that Hezbollah was planning to attack Israel from Syria, but Israel bombed them first and killed an Iranian general in the process?

    Sammy Finkelman (e806a6)

  52. It’s kind of peculiar that Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (which means Yemen) was quick to assert that both terrorists in Paris were telling the truth when one said he was from Al Qaeda in Yemen and the other one (Amedy Culibaly) said he was from ISIS.

Now I’m thinking that, at a minimum, he didn’t tell the Kouachi brothers he was from ISIS but said he was from al Qaeda in Yemen. Coulibaly was connected to the terrorists in Belguim, who are supposed to be from ISIS.

Sammy – Are there any Iranian moderates

No, I don’t think there are any moderates. There may be people secredtly opposed to the whole dictatorship, but there are no moderates.

That language represnetes what Obama, Kerry et al might be thinking.

and is there any actual evidence Iran has delayed doing anything while negotiations drag on and on and on.

No, but what the U.S. and UK may be thinking is that they are stringing Al Khamenei along, and in the meantime, he’s not/..

    he’s not, doing what?

    https://www.commentarymagazine.com/2015/01/21/iran-looking-missile-base-israel-not-nuclear-peace/

What was an Iranian general doing hanging around on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights border with Israel? The answer is that, along with several high-ranking figures in the Hezbollah terrorist group, General Mohammed Ali Allahdadi, a reputed ballistic missiles expert, was there helping to set up a missile base from which the terror group would, with Iranian aid and instructions, strike at the State of Israel. But before he completed his mission Allahdadi was killed along with some of the Hezbollah personnel in an Israel strike on their base near the town of Quenetra. The mission nipped the Iranian scheme in the bud but it’s doubtful that anyone in the Israeli government is under the impression that the strike ended the threat of attack from Iranian forces and their auxiliaries. But the revelation of the Iranian effort near the Golan is significant because it illustrates how deeply involved Iran is in fomenting a new terror war against Israel as well as the peril presented by Western policies that would, at best, make Iran a threshold nuclear power in the years to come…

The moderates are suppposedly keeping all of that under control, the way Admiral Canaris prevented Hitler from invading Spain. Not much else he prevented.

The new sanctions are intended to put a time clock on the Iranians, not take effect immediately. If they were serious about negotiating that should not be a problem given how long talks have already gone on and been extended.

The way Obama’s policy kind of make sense is if he thinks there is power struggle going on in Iran, or people trying to stop Khamenei from rash acts, and making him think he will get something will help.

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  65. “The way Obama’s policy kind of make sense is if he thinks there is power struggle going on in Iran, or people trying to stop Khamenei from rash acts, and making him think he will get something will help.”

Sammy – Khameni knows he will get help if he negotiates a deal and more sanctions if he doesn’t if Congress passes its bill. With Obama’s strategy he has no incentive to negotiate in good faith. Do you have evidence of a power struggle or is that another of your guesses?
