Sydney Hostage Situation: Police Reportedly Confused by Motive of Islamic Terrorist

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:48 am

A Muslim cleric is holding people hostage in a Sydney cafe. He has displayed a black Islamic flag in front of the cafe, and reportedly has demanded that the ISIS flag be delivered to the cafe.

Officials report that his motivations are unknown.

Sounds like a case for Sherlock Holmes! (H/t aunursa.)

  1. It’s a head-scratcher.

  2. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Call this guy a Muslim terrorist and that’s the message he wants to send too. Call him “just another nutcase”, you take away his “political” status but you are misleading the public.

    nk (dbc370)

  3. It is either a publicity stunt or a guy who can not think straight. He is one man, apparently. Eventually, he will need to use the restroom, and either sleep or start thinking and moving in a muddled way. One hopes the hostages have sufficient initiative and muscle power to solve the situation themselves.
BTW, from what I know Australia has gun laws that Bloomberg can only dream about.

  4. Police, politicians, and news readers can pretend to be confused about motive all they want, but no one is actually confused, not in the slightest. This is just another Islamic fanatic, in a long list of Islamic fanatics, demonstrating his personal commitment to the strict tenants of an abhorrent and bastard religion.

We’ve seen it before, there’s nothing new, it’s yet another example of monkey see – monkey do at work on the twisted mind of a 13th century halfwit. Another bloodthirsty barbarian dupe making a blood offering to a malignant gutter god in exchange for the illusion of a self-indulgent afterlife.

The world would be a better place if these animals were exterminated. The sooner the better.

I’m laughing at the contortions the media is going through to keep from

  9. the *other* mystery the MFM isn’t looking into is that this event is unpossible in Australia, because they outlawed all those icky guns years ago, and made people turn theirs in, except for a few that are very tightly controlled and registered…

so, this event is obviously a hoax.

    😎

  10. The apparent assailant is named Man Haron Monis:

Man Haron Monis, a self-proclaimed Islamic “sheikh” and alleged sexual predator, has been identified as the gunman who was holding multiple people hostage in an hours-long standoff in a cafĂ© in Sydney, according to Australian media.

Overnight hostages reportedly spoke to Australian television stations and identified their captor, though police requested outlets not publish it at the time. At around 11 a.m. EST, the situation came to a violent end when police stormed the cafĂ©, freeing several hostages amid flashes from stun grenades and gunfire. It’s not clear what happened to Monis in the operation.

The guy was already facing sexual assault and accessory to murder charges; he really had nothing to lose by this.

In April this year, Monis, who was on bail, was re-arrested after multiple reports of sexual abuse emerged.

Which begs the question: if he was already out on bail, and then re-arrested after sexual abuse allegations emerged, why was he out of jail in he first place?

From initial reports, this sterling representative of the religion of peace has gone to his eternal reward, but at least one other person has been killed.

Accused of helping his current partner, Amirah Droudis, to murder his ex-wife, Noleen Hayson Pal. The woman had been stabbed several times and set alight in a Sydney apartment in April 2013. Monis had been locked in a custody battle with Pal, and prosecutors say he staged a heart attack, car accident and a robbery to create an alibi on the day of the murder.

Between 2000 and 2002, Monis styled himself as an “expert in astrology, numerology, meditation and black magic.” More than 40 women have alleged that he used this as an opportunity to sexually assault vulnerable clients, who came to him for help.

In April this year, Monis, who was on bail, was re-arrested after multiple reports of sexual abuse emerged.

    felipe (b5e0f4)

  18. Well, listen, it is only “alleged”, according to that CBS News report in the second link, that he is holding hostages, and he is only apparently a gunman.

His motives must be even more uncertain, if indeed anything noteworthy is actually happening.

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  19. Apparently it is all the work of one man, who has numerous criminal charges pending against him, the most serious of which is being complicit in the murder of his ex-wife.

Probably he decided things would be better for him, and he’d get some support from somewhere, if he was a terrorist.

They left Sydney’s Lindt’s CafĂ© only moments before it was under siege, and several minutes before all of their friends left after sitting there and hour and 15 minutes. They had to catch a plane to Singapore.

  41. All slaughtered animals are bled out, whether stunned first or not. Further, kosher and halal is a quick, deep cut through both jugulars and carotids and the trachea. Death is pretty quick. What you should think about when you eat halal is that the person who follows that religious stricture also follows an equally strong religious stricture: To wipe his behind, after defecating, not with toilet paper, but with his left hand (dipped in water if water is available).

    nk (dbc370)

  42. 44

I’ll have to ask my Muslim coworker about that. Using the left hand for that function goes way back, long before toilet paper or indoor plumbing, for that matter. It’s why we are used to using the right hand to shake hands, to put food in the mouth, etc. [Insert complaint from left handed people here.] We Jews are supposed to ritually wash our hands after using the facilities (and before prayer and eating bread). It is done in a different way, and after, the normal washing with soap. The only restriction on toilet paper is the need to prerip individual pieces prior to Sabbath or holy days, since ripping paper is not allowed on those days.

  64. It’s got to be really frustrating for the Muslim terrorists. Originally they figured offing us infidels while shouting “Allahu Akhbar” would be enough of a clue. But no, western officialdom and the LHMFM just couldn’t discern what was motivating them. Perhaps, they mused, Muslims were upset about substandard educations their sons and daughters were getting, or inadequate child care services so devout Muslim women would be free to work, or maybe income inequality. After all, all cultures are equal, and we all want the same things! And really who wouldn’t want boys and girls to get a good STEM education and then equal economic and social opportunities for everyone regardless of race, sex, creed, or religion?

So then they figured they had to get a little more explicit. Michael Adebalajo had a speech prepared and had a bystander record it as he cited chapter and verse (really; Surat Al-Ma’idah 5:33, Surat At-Tawbah 9:111, etc.) about how his religion compelled him to kill drummer Lee Rigby on the streets of London.

Naw, sez the British authorities, that couldn’t be it. Perhaps it’s because immigrant yutes like Adebalajo feel alienated from the British society they are so clearly desperate to assimilate into.

Bad, bad Britain! How dare you make such a gentle soul feel so outcast!

MAJ Nidal Hassan actually went so far as to spell out how Islam compels Muslims to attack their fellow soldiers in the circumstances he found himself in; a pending deployment to Iraq. He had to, he explained in detail, to save his immortal soul. Then after he gunned down 13 of his fellow soldiers while shouting “Allahu Akhbar” he offered to go through all the Islamic particulars again in his proposed “necessity” defense. Which was disallowed.

And once again officialdom and the LHMFM just couldn’t puzzle out why MAJ Nidal Hassan did what he did. Clearly facing an unsolvable mystery, they just chalked it up to undifferentiated “work place violence.”

I’m sure lots of Muslims are wondering what sort of cluebat they need to beat us (as in, our “thought leaders” and “opinion makers”) with until we acknowledge the glaringly obvious.

    Steve57 (600c9e)

  65. 1. The Lindt cafe is not certified kosher, but the Elbazes probably just had coffee.

    2. Halal certification for most products is pretty cheap, and the money probably just covers the certifier’s expenses, if that. It might even be subsidized by donations. So there’s unlikely to be much if any remainder that might find its way to terrorists.

It is either a publicity stunt or a guy who can not think straight. He is one man, apparently. Eventually, he will need to use the restroom, and either sleep or start thinking and moving in a muddled way. One hopes the hostages have sufficient initiative and muscle power to solve the situation themselves.

That’s what happened, but the cafe manager miscalculated.

They had already been forced to recite some statements, so they were perhaps afraid that they might not get a better chance.

He started to nod off, and they thought he was asleep. The cafe manager, seeing this, attempted to grab his gun, but he woke up, or got active, and shot him. That was the signal for the police to intervene, because the rule is generally, if one hostage is killed, that’s the time to attack (the gunman didn’t know this, though) The police could not see in (a hidden camera apparently not having bene delivered) but they could hear shots, and that was the basis for going in.

One other hostage, a 38-year old woman lawyer, is reported to have died of a heart attack ??
