Bye Mary

She got shellacked. Couldn’t happen to a nicer Senator.

  11. Ace had a great idea the other intended for the house bit would work here. When we have a majority that virtually assault proof we should en masse vote for the Dem in certain races. For example if Boehner and Juan McCain are up in 16, we could afford to lose them to a Dem and send an awesome message.

    Gazzer (cb9ee2)

  12. Gazzer #11 … a *much* better idea is to take a “virtually assault proof” majority and keep the RINOs while getting that few more to give a veto-proof majority so that RINOs can’t get in the way …

Giving a seat to a Democrat/Progressive is a *fabulous* example of cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face !

Sure it could. There are lots of senators I’d rather see gone than Landrieu. But I’ll take victories where I can get them. She was far from the worst senator, but the senate is still a better place without her.

They still control the deep South.

It’s just now when they talk about their huge advantage in the deep South, they mean Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

How many of the 60 Obamacare senators are left?

    http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/half-of-the-senators-who-voted-for-obamacare-wont-be-part-of-new-senate/article/2555721

On the Senate side, going into this year’s midterm elections, 25 senators who voted for Obamacare were already out or not going be part of the new Senate being sworn in next month. After Democratic losses on Nov. 4 and Saturday’s defeat of Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., the number has risen to 30.

All Senate seats have been up for re-election one time since then.

8 Senators lost their re-election races and were replaced by a Republican.

8 Senators did not run for re-election or resigned and were replaced by a Republican, Roland Burris and Max Baucus maybe because he was going to lose anyway.

10 Senators did not run for re-election or resigned and were replaced by a Democrat.

1 Senator did not run for re-election and was replaced by a Republican, who was later replaced by a Democrat. (Paul Kirk, D-Mass. appointed to replace Ted Kennedy — seat won in special election in 2010 and later lost in 2012 by Republican Scott Brown)

3 Senators died in office – their seats now occupied by a Democrat. (Byrd, Inouye and Lautenberg) Frank Lautenberg was temporarily replaced by a Republican for a bit over 4 1/2 months. At the time of his death, Lautenberg had already reluctantly agreed not to seek re-election in 2014.

So, of the 60 Dems who voted for it, 1/2 are gone; 16 have been replaced by Repubs and 14 by other Dems.

  32. Mary was the classic liberal….

Catholic, and proud of it…but voted for abortion, and then complained when the Archbishop complained…

Hadn’t lived here in years….but claimed to be New Orleans thru-and-thru….If you are “New Orleans” you never leave, even when you do, but others “know” that about you….we all forgot that about here….

And, watching here concede last night, I got the feeling she was glad it was over, because she could now go make real money and never come back….

  33. It would be nice to have the statistics on what happened to the 40 Republican Senators who voted against the PPACA.

  34. The last time there were so many Senators laid off was the Reagan Revolution.

I like the sound of that.

    Mary was the classic liberal….

So she wasn’t an ultra-liberal, or a liberal in the context of the 21st century, where being in favor of traditional marriage, gender-labeled bathrooms in public schools, non-wide-open national orders, a non-corrupt IRS/NSA, a US military where a Nidal Hasan isn’t coddled, and an EPA that doesn’t make the public (presumably who are that government agency’s overseer and owner) pray at the altar of global warming makes one, in turn, an ultra-conservative.

I have a hunch that plenty of “classic” liberals — much less modern-day liberals — due to the effects of decades of squish-squish-squish — will proclaim that, “yes, that list of opinions does make a person an extremist — a big meanie — which is bad for the Republican Party, and why it therefore needs to become moderate. Hey, I sure do like Republicans along the lines of Jon Huntsman!! Or, better yet, Michael Bloomberg!”

  35. Landrieu like Breaux floated behind the scenes for YEARS that she may switch parties – total lie, she did it to reduce strong competitors. In Fact she even did it when she was the Treasurer.

She was possibly the worse senator for Louisiana, and she barely won elections against super weak opponents with great outside assistance and stacking the ballot with fake republicans

The fact that she is finally gone is a good day for America.

    EPWJ (29d77c)

  36. Now, who was it back before the Nov election who were poo-poo-ing the GOP’s chances of even getting to 51 or 52?
Some of us called it at 54.

    askeptic (efcf22)

  37. Watching Fox all the Republicans there seem to assume the conservatives are a liability. Here’s an idea: rather than let the Dems define the issues and wring your hands about how to respond to them, how about pushing some issues that average middle class people care about, like national defense, the propagandized educational system, race hustling, media malfeasance, voter fraud… shall I go on?

    Ray Van Dune (d9ea85)

  38. Ray Van Dune:

Although I appreciate what you are saying, you have to understand that academia, lobbies, business, the popular culture, sports, the GOP, the Democrats and media are all aligned specifically to thwart the conservative cause.

All we have are families, a few churches, blogs and social media.

    I like our chances.

All 40 Republicans voted against PPACA on 12/24/2009.

    ————————————

26* are still in the US Senate
12 Resigned or Retired and were replaced by a Republican (Kyl,LeMieux, Chambliss, Brownback, Bunning, Bond, Ensign, Gregg, Voinavich, DeMint, Hutchinson, Bennett)
1 Resigned and was replaced by an Independent (Snowe)
1 Lost a Primary Re-election and was eventually replaced by a Republican (Luger)

*1 Lost a Primary Re-election but then won in the General Election via write in (Murkowski)

    —————————————–

To date, No Senator who voted against Obamacare has lost in a General Election.

    SaveFarris (e23e53)

  43. That would mean that Angus King of Maine is the only case where someone who caucuses with the Republicans was replaced by someone who caucuses with the Democrats. (Snowe by the way didn’t resign, but retired)

    60-16 = 45 + 1 = 46* Democrats and 54 Reublicans.

    * includes 2 non-Democrats, Angus King of Maine and Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

    Sammy Finkelman (7e7e58)

  44. nk (dbc370) — 12/8/2014 @ 7:29 am

LOL! I’m gonna steal that idea.

  45. Who knew that Maine has a King?

    felipe (b5e0f4)

  46. 44. SaveFarris (e23e53) — 12/8/2014 @ 10:47 am >blockquote> 1 Lost a Primary Re-election and was eventually replaced by a Republican (Luger) No, wait. Lugar was replaced by a Democrat. )Joe Donnelly, elected to a 6-year term in 2012)

Now wait. If the Democrats had 60 Senators, and 16 were replaced (as of now) by a Republican, that should leave them with 44. Two Republicans being replaced by Democrats (1 de facto 1 de jure) adds up to 46, leaving 54 Republicans, which is correct.

    Sammy Finkelman (7e7e58)

  47. There are The math is not so good for the Republicans in 2016.

Assuming no special elections, 24 seats held by Republiocans will be up and only 10 by Democrats. Of the 24, 7 are in states Obama carried (some by a small margin) New Hampshire, Iowa, Wisconisn, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Florida. No Democrats are up for re-election in states not carried by Obama.

Also, McCain and Grassley might retire.

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  48. McCain won’t have the class or grace to retire

he’s a whorish coward with no identity apart from being a sleazy p.o.s. US senator
