Bill Maher: Liberals Sure Get Upset When A Certain Truth Is Pointed Out

Bill Maher and writer Sam Harris got into a heated discussion about Islam with actor Ben Affleck.

“You and I have been trying to make the case that liberals need to stand up for liberal principles,” Maher said to fellow panelist, author Sam Harris.

“Freedom of speech, freedom to practice any religion you want without fear of violence, freedom to leave a religion, equality for women, equality for minorities, including homosexuals, these are liberal principles that liberals applaud for,” Maher continued, “but then when you say in the Muslim world this is what’s lacking, then they get upset.”

“Liberals have failed us,” Harris added.

  17. Did you hear how A**fleck started to quote the preamble of the Declaration (“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…” he backed up and replaced “Creator” with “forefathers.”

    A lefty almost slipped and admitted on national lefty-cable that God had something to do with the founding principles of this nation.

    A**fleck is one of the more vapid people I have ever heard pretending to be smart. He just isn’t a good enough actor to pull that off.

    I am just having problems understanding how Maher actually seems to get the salient point in this specific argument.

  19. It doesn’t matter if I agree with something BIll Maher says: I find him to be a repulsive troll. He also doesn’t look like that in person (i.e., a hairpiece and serious makeup). Anytime he gets all intellectual and snotty, I begin to get annoyed….

Mocking Christianity is all the rage, because it’s easy (Christian doctrine says turn the other cheek), but few include Islam in their derision (because Islamic doctrine says kill the infidel).

  25. It’s true that Maher is pretty much an equal-opportunity anti-religion fanatic.

    One big difference between Christianity and Islam is “turn the other cheek” versus “cut off their heads.” It is far less costly to make nasty comments about Christians than it is about Islam. In fact, quoting verses from the Koran is often enough to get an “infidel” handed his own head.

    Opposite ends of the spectrum we have here. One says lie to save your own butt except you “don’t really mean it”, the other demands you be faithful unto even death. I would think even an unbeliever would see the drastic departure. One of them you can’t trust to tell the truth while the other dies for what they know is the truth.

    Ben should take a little time to understand the difference, instead of just “feeling”.

Is Maher’s audience the most ill-informed and useless group of liberals that can be found in the Los Angeles basin? Do they have any opinions that don’t originate with television comedians?

    Affleck & Kristoff remind me of the anti-anti-communists of the 1940s and 50s. You know, the ones who said that they hated Soviet communism but they also thought that anti-communism was a horrible, horrible thing because, you know, Nixon and McCarthy. The reality is that the anti-anti-communists spent that period trying to pretend that the Soviet Union posed no threat and had made no inroads into American progressivism, and history has shown how stupid and shortsighted they really were. I think someday the same will be said about the Nicholas Kristoffs and Ben Afflecks of the world.

They are “Progressives.” Doctrinally, they hold that any issue, not matter how large or vexing, can be solved if only enough resources are provided and the right person with sufficient unfettered authority is charged with solving said problem.   36. Saying that Liberal have failed us assumes that it was their intention to serve us in the first place. That might be true with some of the rank and file, but the spokes-twits and leaders have always been about ordering us around and remaking the world according to their pallid visions. The Liberals have failed THEMSELVES.   39. Nothing is more alarming and loathsome than people who see themselves as compassionate souls yet also are lousy when judging the goodness or badness of people and situations, and, in turn, inculcating outcomes that are anything but compassionate and humane.

    I’m sure Affleck shed tears for the societies (and regimes) of the Iron Curtain because, well, they were dedicated to the proletariat, to the common man. When it comes to the nations under Sharia law, he gives a similar pat on the back to them because they’re made up of the sad, touching common man of the Third World or emerging world. Victims caught in the middle are merely pawns on the chess board of compassion for compassion’s sake (hello, Nidal Hasan!).

    I don’t believe that for a New York minute. They behave themselves here (for the most part if you exclude blowing up sky scrapers, the Pentagon, the Boston Marathon and cutting the heads off coworkers and shooting a dozen or two coworkers) because they do not yet have enough political clout in numbers to do what they want: kill us all. I for one, bomb mecca, would love to know just “what happens if they don’t”. Will Obama ship them home? Will they be imprisoned or executed? We all know our government is impotent against anyone other than Christians, Jews, Amish, Mennonites and Quakers. The government would crush them if they even dared to refuse to bake a cake.     Leviticus, I’m not sure what your problem is with the Daily Mail link that Simon Jeter provided, unless you just have an aversion to the Daily Mail in general (fair enough). Actually, the article there brings out the self-effacing side of Affleck that I kind of like — his understanding that fame is fleeting as well as his ability to have a fairly honest appraisal of the less-successful career. I just wonder why in the area of politics Affleck thinks he has to morph into this hyper-progressive who takes up the fight on behalf of brown people everywhere, even the ones who are in to beheading journalists and blowing up schoolkids. He certainly seems to be riddled with rich white guy’s guilt; those lessons from Howard Zinn must have really sunk in and messed with his psyche.

    I have scant patience with Conspiracy Theories, pretty much no matter who they indict. FRD did not arrange Pearl Harbor; he was simply too racist and arrogant to believe that the Japanese could attack across that distance. He expected an attack…..on Manilla.
