Two Different Kinds Of Feminist Protest

Filed under: General — Dana @ 8:12 pm

[guest post by Dana]

This weekend, a fearless young Egyptian feminist protested ISIS in a bold and brazen manner. (Warning: Photo at link NSFW)

Aliaa Magda Elmahdy and another female protestor defecated and menstruated on the Islamic State flag:

In the image, the 23-year-old feminist is seen facing the camera, while the other woman, dressed in a black hijab, has her back towards the viewer. Two presumably plastic machine guns are in the background, and the veiled woman is holding up her middle finger. The letters IS are inscribed on Elmahdy’s stomach and on the second woman’s bottom.

Elmahdy said in the past that her photos “scream against a society of violence, racism, sexism, sexual harassment and hypocrisy.”

Meanwhile, a few weeks ago our own local feminist protestors, Code Pink voiced their objections to the airstrikes in Iraq that were part of a humanitarian effort to save the trapped Yazidis. The 7 protestors who showed up stated:

[T]hey opposed bombing for any purpose in Iraq and argued that the United States was motivated by financial, not humanitarian, interests in the region.

The effectiveness of protest is not always measurable, but anyone willing to take an actual risk against the oppressive and tyrannical rule of bloodthirsty killers (and no, Code Pink, I’m not referring to George W. Bush) should, I think, be taken seriously.

  1. Hello.

  2. i never knew “menstruated on” was a thing

i liked it more better before when I didn’t know “menstruated on” was a thing

  3. Um, maybe you shouldn’t focus on that, but rather on the larger point.

    Dana (07bc65)

  4. yes, pikachu, full neuralization might be required,

    narciso (ee1f88)

  5. Yes, speaking truth to power, has real consequences, Code Pink is ‘on the other side;

    narciso (ee1f88)

  6. I wonder if Code Pink would be all purehearted if the monsters in question were coming for them. I pretty much think they’d be screaming for help and right-the-f-now!

  7. Elmahdy has more balls than all of Code Pink.

  9. I saw it. I wish they sold eye bleach. In my gut, I was more disgusted by the protesters than by the thing they were protesting. Propaganda that is unpleasant to look at is counter-productive.

  10. Elmahdy said in the past that her photos “scream against a society of violence, racism, sexism, sexual harassment and hypocrisy.”

She’ll never get an honorary degree or a commencement speech invite at Brandeis University speaking that way.

    Just ask Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

You’ve got to be against the eeevil capitalist patriarchy with the glass ceilings and income inequality and inadequate maternity leave, babe.

Not the genital mutilating, beating with sticks, beheading, crucifying, and amputating patriarchy.

  11. I prefer MSLSD and TAMPON EAR RINGS. Much more intelligent and civil.

    Gus (70b624)

  12. Nk, are you referring to Elmahdy?

    Dana (4dbf62)

  13. 9. …I was more disgusted by the protesters than by the thing they were protesting. Propaganda that is unpleasant to look at is counter-productive.

You were more disgusted by the sight of a couple of chicks taking a dump or bleeding on a flag? As opposed to what they were protesting, such as the beheadings of toddlers, burying women and children alive, slave markets, and mass murders?

    Steve57 (99bd31)

  14. What would you consider an impactful form of protest against the barbarians, nk? Or should she and other women just shut up??

    Dana (4dbf62)

  15. Steve57. Pictures of DISMEMBERED BABIES bad. Mommy’s killing their own Baby…..GOOD.

    Gus (70b624)

  16. Why do DEMOCRATS/LIBS support the IZZLAMOFASCIST WAR on WYMYN??

    Gus (70b624)

  17. Yes, Dana, I was referring Elmahdy, and my point is that want to forget what I saw her and her friend doing. Whatever message she wanted to send got smothered in her obscene acts for me. And II think other people would be likewise disgusted. Governments and advertisers have studied the subject to death and the one thing you don’t want to do is turn off your audience with unpleasant images unless it’s the image itself you want the audience to hate.

    nk (dbc370)

  18. What would you consider an impactful form of protest against the barbarians, nk?

Unpleasant images of the barbarians and their acts.

    nk (dbc370)

  19. Is there a fund to send Code Pink to Iraq that I could contribute to ?

    Mike K (90dfdc)

  20. 17. …Whatever message she wanted to send got smothered in her obscene acts for me. And II think other people would be likewise disgusted…

    nk (dbc370) — 8/25/2014 @ 9:56 pm

I honestly am not as disgusted by what she did as opposed to what ISIS did to (she says) cause her protest. Maybe she’s just a rank opportunist. But compared to ISIS she’s harmless.

    Steve57 (99bd31)

  21. Aliaa Magda Elmahdy you can deal with wearing a hazmat suit. Which isn’t proof against a beheading.

Hence different categories of disgust from yours truly.

    Steve57 (99bd31)

  22. ISIS is so obscene that perhaps making them the recipient of an obscene act is the strongest statement that can be made. Especially from unclean and unclothed women. If you’re an ISIS male, what would offend most?

    Dana (4dbf62)

  23. Oh, I see. The message is to ISIS.

    nk (dbc370)

  24. 23. Oh, I see. The message is to ISIS.

    nk (dbc370) — 8/25/2014 @ 10:38 pm

    You didn’t see that?

    Steve57 (99bd31)

  25. No, I really was turned off by the image and wanted the whole thing out of my head.

    nk (dbc370)

  26. Not Dana’s fault, BTW. I’d seen it at Breitbart earlier.

    nk (dbc370)

  27. Breitbart just had it there up front without warning.

    nk (dbc370)

  28. 25. No, I really was turned off by the image and wanted the whole thing out of my head.

I understand. Just saying, what those two Egyptian feminists did to desecrate the ISIS flag is nothing compared to what ISIS and their ilk have done to desecrate thousands of human beings.

I wish I was only trying to rid my head of the image of Aliaa Magda Elmahdy and friend squatting indecently on a flag.

    Steve57 (99bd31)

  29. 23-year-old feminist

Kind of makes you want to stab yourself in the throat, just on the threat of spending a weekend with one.

    Steve57 (99bd31)

  30. Code Pink is a special form of pathetic.

    JVW (638245)

  31. Steve57, while 23 is still 23, the fact that she is from Egypt makes a difference to me. She is not an American college girl getting her panties in a twist about white patriarchy and privilege or such nonsense. She’s in the land of Laura Logan and the daily sexual molestation of women and far worse. I think her reality probably made her into a different person than an average American 23 year old.

    Dana (4dbf62)

  32. She lives in Sweden, according to the internet.

    nk (dbc370)

  33. From Wiki: ” In 2013, Elmahdy sought political asylum in Sweden for fear of being jailed, after being kidnapped and receiving death threats, and escaping a rape attempt.[6]“

    Dana (4dbf62)

  34. yumpin’ yiminy!
dat jus’ made dis big dumb Svede
    trow up his pancakes

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  35. You know, it is not called ISIS in Arabic or Kurdish.

    Sammy Finkelman (7d0d47)

  36. “Code Pink is a special form of pathetic.”

JVW – Big Hamass supporters, those Code Pink loons. I look forward to them wearing their vajajay costumes on their next field trip to the Middle East.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  37. Don’t know a lot about this young lady, but she certainly is fearless.

    gary gulrud (46ca75)

  38. JVW – Big Hamass supporters, those Code Pink loons. I look forward to them wearing their vajajay costumes on their next field trip to the Middle East.

Jerkoff comedians have suggested sending the rancid Westboro Baptist folks to Iraq to “preach” to ISIS, so why can’t they raise money and send Code Pink to Gaza to bring their unique perspective on radical feminism to Hamas? Maybe sponsor a reading of The Vagina Monologues in Arabic at the local mosque.

    JVW (638245)

  39. Code Pink did go, or at least tried to go, to Gaza and one got thrown in jail transiting in Cairo.

    nk (dbc370)

  40. Don’t know a lot about this young lady, but she certainly is fearless.

She’s in Sweden. They show that stuff in 5th grade sex education there.
