Some Democrats to Block Bipartisan-Sponsored Bill to Make Deportations of Illegal Children from Central America Easier

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:51 am

There is a bipartisan-sponsored bill out to undo the law that is helping attract tens of thousands of illegal children to the Texas border:

The Cornyn-Cuellar bill, known as the Humane Act, would allow children from Central American countries to opt to be voluntarily sent home, as migrant children from Mexico and Canada can currently choose. It also would allow children with a legal claim for remaining in the country to make their case before an immigration judge within seven days of undergoing a screening by the Department of Homeland Security. Judges would then have 72 hours to decide whether the child can remain in the country with a sponsor while pursing legal action.

The legislation would also authorize up to 40 new immigration judges to expedite the process, and it would require a plan, as well as additional resources, for gaining operational control over 90 percent of the nation’s southern border.

The legislation is sponsored by “two Texas lawmakers — Senator John Cornyn, the chamber’s No. 2 Republican, and Representative Henry Cuellar, a Democrat.”

What’s the holdup?

The legislation is expected to encounter resistance from some congressional Democrats.

There’s a new poll out today from the Washington Post showing the public dislikes Obama’s approach to the border crisis, and dislikes even more the approach by “Republicans in Congress.” (Apparently Republicans control Congress now?)

Hey, Washington Post! Try telling the poll respondents that Democrats will be blocking a bill to allow quicker deportation of these children. See how that polls, why don’t you?

  1. HAHAHA Don’t be silly. The WaPo doesn’t work that way.

  2. OK, so according to the NYT and the WaPo, Republicans are addressing immigration only because they need to prove to moderate voters that they aren’t uniformly hostile to brown people, whereas Democrats are addressing immigration because they want to try and alleviate this humanitarian crisis at the border.

My God, is vota a reporter for one of those newspapers?

  3. This bill is as orchestrated as the waves of immigrants at the border.

The bill will go down to defeat, and the proponents and opposition can then make their faux outraged speeches to their bases and go back to square one.

  4. This is news??

A couple of days ago, Senator Patrick Leahy, Chairman of the Senate Judiaciary Commiitee, said he is dead set against any change in the 2008 law.

The Wall Street Journal, 4 days ago (Friday, July 11, 2014, page 2, columns 4 and 5)

Some Senate Democrats Balk at Faster Deportations

Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D., Vt.) said he would “fight tooth and nail” changes to the 2008 law. “When you have an 8- or 9-year-old girl who’s being raped by gangs, that are being sent by their parents to escape that kind of violence, I’m not sure Americans really feel we should immediately send them back,” he said at a Senate appropriations hearing on the president’s request.

Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois, the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate, also told reporters Thursday that he couldn’t support changing the 2008 law unless he had more confidence that the children were receiving adequate legal representation and wouldn’t be returned to dangerous situations.

And even if the law was changed, it would only change it slightly. If some kid knew what he was doing and had been properly instructed, of course there would still be hearing, because all taht ti would do is allow voluntary departure.

At the appropriations hearing, Homeland Security Department Secretary Jeh Johnson said “some type of added discretion on my part would be helpful to address this particular situation.” Changing the law would enable children coming from Central America to “accept a voluntary return,” he said.

Sorry that I didn’t get around to writing everything relevant about this topic. I was concentrating on tuberculosis.

But that would require some honesty on WP’s part, Patterico! Ain’t gonna happen, wouldn’t be prudent to show lefties for what they are.

It only does for foreign countries. Neither does anybody else, like perhaps OSHA might (hazardous to work there in other words) This kind of thing is ignored.

They were saying it was dangerous.

Here is a Cleveland clinic publication from 2003 all the new (2000) guidelines how to interpret for tuberculosis tests and when to do them from the American Thoracic Society and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    http://www.ccjm.org/content/70/1/49.full.pdf

Someone newly infected wouldn’t even test postive too early maybe 25% or more of the time.

It said, by the way, that BCG is given in most of the developing world and Eastern Europe.

Anoither fact I ran across is that lung cancer is often misdiagnosed as tuberculosis, particularly in India, where there is 8 times as much TB as lung cancer. There is also an association between getting TB scars and getting cancer (but maybe the same vulnerability can cause both. The TB related cancer is easier tio treat than other cancers. One person has a theory that a bacterium can cause lung cancer.

I was reading about George Orwell too (in the famous people wth TB series. Not an official series. But I have anumber fof biographies.

He was able to procure a supply of sterptomycin at a time when it was generally available in Great Britain, but it caused too many side effects in him and they had to stop it although what was lefgt over cured two other people.

It is not clear why there was this recommendation for limited activity and why they even, when he wasin bad shape, would take away his typewriter. I can understand maybe the body is fighhting it and when other activity is undergone not enough antibodies are manufactured.

  12. A proper question: “President Obama proposes spending about $60,000 for each Central American child entering the US illegally, to provide lawyers and other support while they await immigration hearings. Republicans propose immediate deportation at the cost of airfare, as would be done with children from Mexico. Which do you think is a better use of your tax money?”

    Kevin M (b357ee)

  13. The democratic base wants the children to stay and senate democrats better filibuster any bill to deport them. Mrs. Clinton will support the children. Republicans are evil deport them not the children.

Either all are subject to immediate return, or all are to be given their Wilburforce due process.

With a deadlier more longer lasting blow organizing and gathering strength over the horizon just out of sight.
